I love how you seamlessly go from blues/rock phrasing into country lead guitar walks up the neck. Awesome chops! I am here to tune in and steal your licks from now on, one of my new favorite players..
I have a Dirty Shirley 40 and recently got a DS pedal... can't believe how close it gets to the sound of my amp.. I set the amp clean and ran the pedal, it gets shockingly close to the preamp section of the DS amp. Ran it in front of a few amps at club jams and it sounded awesome.. never would have thought a pedal could sound so good.
It's extremely good, i run it in front of a Tweed Bassman (Victoria) and it roars. When playing at home it sounds huge in front of my 5w Champ, truly worth the money. Also the sounds really inspires me, it's a keeper for sure.
I use that I put the gain on the trim pot to about 30 % gain and on the pedal turned the gain all the way down on the pedal. Works incredibly well with an 800 or 800 style amp
I really like the new labeling system you've added when you are talking about the controls. Killer tones with awesome playing! Can't wait for the next pedal review!!
What a fantastic demo...just went and got one. I always want a Marshall type of sound in my rig... now it's fulfilled, thanks to Shawn Tubbs, the amazing humble man.
Yes gonna get one I use a RM clone(germ) and an 808 so IMO it should be perfect for the higher gain tones I like to get controllable feedback Plays itself at that point
Fantastic playing Shawn! Love the sound of that pedal - been waiting for release since NAMM in Jan - it sounds sooooooo good! Buxton Boost going into the dirty Shirley pedal is a heavenly combination! Thanks and have an awesome day 😊
Thanks for the demo! I really enjoy (and appreciate) you describing the features and how you use the pedal. I love to learn, so thank you! Wasn't able to catch you live on ToneTalk, but will be catch the video replay!
Swinging back around for another comment. Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your appearance on Tone Talk! Very insightful. I've picked up the guitar again (in my 50's), but although not a great player, I've found that I enjoy learning about gear and also learning about the player themselves about as much as playing itself. I had heard your name well before now, but it was awesome getting to know you (virtually through video) as a player and person. Anyway, glad I could subscribe to your channel and thanks for passing along your experiences and knowledge through your videos! All the best to ya!
I have 2 Friedman heads, but his OD pedals are incredible too. The BE & the DS OD's can turn a Twin into a super high gain amp, and you still have those great Fender tones too. Very handy pedals.
Yeah, it really does. If you have a Marshall head and use this, you can get close. But a small amp can't push a lot of air, it's still a great OD pedal, but you can only get a small amp so far.
i have a marshall 100 watt artiste 1976 with a 4x12 celestion g12h30 the amp is so clean even when cranked it doesnt have any breakup just amazing cleans
for a low gain pedal, thats a ton of gain. just stick some kind of od/clean boost in front and you'd easily be able to play metal with it. or just have a sweet lead tone.
NickMass35 I'm sure u know inside the be od there's a gain trumping that u can lower it or make higher. I'm assuming u would want to lower it. Lots of people forget it's there or don't even know.
Was able to A/B them myself. The BE is killer, but the DS is more open and punchy...still with plenty of gain. At gig volume into a broken-punchy clean tone, it’ll kick ya right through the sheetrock!!
Dude can PLAY. Great demo. Lol. One of those demos where there are going to be a lot of disappointed people who keep turning knobs on the pedal trying to figure out why they don't sound like this monster.
Shawn Tubbs No problem dude. Thanks for the demo. I've played a couple Friedman amps. I really like them. Didn't know they had pedals out there. I really liked the "out" stuff you were doing on your tele over the turnaround at :50. Killer playing all around but that was a treat. I also liked the Jimmy Herring whammy/slide stuff on the strat.
Serious competition for the Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret! Tight switch is similar to DLS's internal Super Bass/Super Lead switch. Presence pot is also internal on the DLS. Shirley gets the win for intuitive controls but DLS has a better price point. Need to see a side by side comparison!
Ok... that was some great playing, man! I don’t even care about the pedal any more. There are pedals everywhere... but that playing... ... yeah! Great! Stuff!!
Great playing, pedal sounds good. I like it better than the BE-OD already but think i will stick with my Keeley D&M drive. Its actually 2 pedals in one and more bang for the buck with the TRS jacks..imo I have learned to resist the hype over the years. :)
Nice demo! I really wish the BE-OD would have similar controls, but maybe this will replace BE-OD on my board, because it has way too much gain for my needs and no mids control. It (BE.OD) sound cool when played alone, but gets lost in the mix with a band. Or maybe I just haven´t tweaked it enough...
Some Angus Young licks would have been appropriate but overall Shawn does amazing demos, very thorough, thumbs up! I've owned 3 Dirty Shirley amps and can say the pedal sounds close but until I try it I will not know....
Hey Shawn hope all's well I came back to this demo to see if this would be a good fit for a Princeton rig Basically using a JHS 66 Boost into an 808 - EPH3 echo I guess I'm worried about too much gain into the 1/10 6v6 circuit I'm hoping for the 2 type's of gain basically w the DS being the lead tones mostly Even if it's just being the RM into the DS Thanks man Nice PRS....saw an interview with DG this week Said might be an SE DGT
Ha Ha so a month later I'm using my trusty RM clone by Diaz instead of the so far untrusty JHS RM clone So will probably go RM to RYRA for a versatile clean boost instead of the Xotic Super Clean Boost Bringing the Whacko in before my DD-5 and EPH3 to amp
Great demo! Will you please do a demo with the pedal going into the dirty Shirley amp? Me and many other DS owners would like to know if this could be a potential footswitch for the amp. Amp in the low gain position and use the pedal to push it and see if it can faithfully recreate that sweet sweet DS high gain that the amp has.
1st time view of Ur demo (s). SOLID, CONSISTENT , INTELLIGENT, GREAT playing! R U just micing the 2x12 eminence cab? Without any computer enhancement...just as U wld demo it in any shop? I was getting some App for Destruction feels along w some P.Townsend here & there. I have 1 finally question(s) for U. I have a 007 Fender Bassbreaker which is supposed to be reminiscent of a Marshall JTM 45, liked Clapton used on the Beano LP, (my favorite Blues and Rock n Roll Sound)! What adjustments can I make to get close to that tone w my 007, wether it be pedals ,tubes, or anything! My Groove (pwr)Tube EL84-S has just started to go so it wld be great to start there & proceed onto ANY & ALL Things I cld do to get the close to the tone I hve been chasing since I was 19. If U think I should just scrap my amp ect, I wld need to stay in the price range of trading in a used 007, but as far as tubes, speaker, pedals I can try whatever. The main pedals I use now R TC Hall of fame, EHX Soulfood, TC Rusty Fuzz, & a V847 Vox wah, and sum times a CALINE Crazy CATI & JoYo Vintage Ovr Drive. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Expertise, and GREAT PLAYING w Ur fellow Music Fanatics lol. Keep on, Keeping on Ur a Natural! ! Bryan
Hey Bryan, thanks for tuning into my channel! I mic the 2x12 with a Shure SM57 and Royer 121 combo into a Chandler TG2 mic preamp. I never add any sort of enhancements to the tones. I think you're on the right track with your amp.As far as the Beano tone goes, I don't know that EC was using anything between the guitar and the amp. I'm by no means an expert concerning this. I would say get as close as you can with the amp and use a boost pedal to get the rest of the way there. The Buxom Boost would be one to look at. I've got a demo coming soon. It's ideal for this type of application because it can be used as a classic treble boost and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to give me some solid advice Shawn, I will definitely check out the Buxom Boost demo U will have out soon. I hve 1 quick question, this is the 1st tube amp I actually owned myself, I was using a Fender Studio 85 solid state 1x12 (the one w red knobs, right now it's taken apart to be cleaned and to hve a input replaced, but the guy who was doing this passed on...) anyways like I said my 007 pwr tube is going & I ordered a KT66 from G CENTER bc that's the tubes used in the Blues Breaker JTM 45. Even though I asked the guy at GC if my fender wld accept the KT66 it was way too big, do these tubes come in different sizes and he just ordered the wrong one? Bc my Groove Tube EL84-S is much much smaller than the KT66 duet he sent. I thought that the S at the end of EL84-S might mean small (lol), but I don't hve a clue.....usually I am ALOT MORE Educated in my equipment but since owning a tube amp is new to me I'm a little bit nieve abt it. Since its the only pwr tube in the 007 Bassbreaker I shld'nt need to hve it biased right? The KT66 is a regular medium duet. I figure medium duet is a size reference? Thanks Again for any input Shawn! Keep up the Great Demo's, can't wait for the B.Boost demo! Take it Easy Brother, Bryan
If you have an EL84 power section, that is the only tube type you can use. There are occasions when the a KT 66 can be interchangeable with an 6L6 or EL34 but those are rare.
If anyone can point me to a demo for the Dirty Shirley or the BE-OD on a Peavey Classic 30 that would be great. The only issue I have with most demo's is that people are using the pedals in $1000.00 + amps and the whole reason most of us buy the pedals is because we can't afford those more expensive amps. It would be great to go down to the store to demo these pedals but most of the time they need to be ordered because they don't carry them. I have a Wampler Pinnacle and sounds terrible in my amp but sounds excellent in the $1000.00 + amps. Not ready to pull the blind trigger again though. You know, once bitten....... :( Excellent demo though Shawn. :)
The XTS Atomic is a bit more focused in the mids than the DS even with the "tight switch". The DS has more lows than the XTS. Both would work well for that type of sound.
Can you give me some insight on how this compares to the BE-OD? The BE-OD has more gain on tap, but I don't need as much as it has, and I like the flexibility of mids on this one. Mostly wondering if the Dirty Shirley can still beef up single coils the way the BE-OD does, but with less gain?
I've honestly never played the BE-OD so I can't really say how the DS-OD compares. I can say that the DS-OD has plenty of fat mids on tap as well as gain for single coil pickups.
Hey Nabil, I can't really think of a JRAD pedal that would be along the same lines in tone except for maybe the Flex Drive-not sure if it's still in production any more- but it doesn't have the mid control and focus of the DS-OD.
How's the dirty shirley compared to low gain marshall pedals like box of rock, and higher ones like andy timmons/angry charlie? And how is the stackability?
To me the DS-OD is different than the BOR in that the BOR to my ears is brighter and more aggressive, maybe a bit more open. Wouldn't be quite as versatile for sure as the DS-OD. They're both killer pedals. The Timmons Sig Angry Charlie is one that I don't have any experience with unfortunately.
Hey, does anyone know if this would work with a solid state amp, since I have an ages old marhsall solid state combo and a blackstar fly 3 and they say this pedal will get the tube amp sound of the actual amp but I'm not sure if it only works with tube amps. I sorta have this on my list of possible x-mas presents.
Nope, save your money and get a used tube amp, then save more money and buy the Dirty Shirley OD. Running a solid state effects pedal into a solid state amp will not make it sound any warmer or sweeter.
Ihave the dirty shirley combo amp with the cream absck speaker and i play the treble and mids wide open and the bass almost off and it still is too bassey, so you think one of these pedals would help me?
yes Shawn it does, im lisening to your story on Truetone it is really good to lisen to your story, you are a great guy thanks for takeing the time to answer me back. yes my amp is brand new!
Thanks so much! Well, I think the way to go for you would be to find something that can actually cut lows. Look at the Pettyjohn Filter. It allows for up to 12db boost or cut in the lows, mids, and highs. I think it would work for you.
It does, and I'm sorry I didn't demo the box that way. I was just so touch sensitive that I didn't even think to roll the volume off for you guys. Thanks Thomas!
Fantastic playing/demo Shawn. Your phrasing is simply beautiful
i'm only here to steal the licks.

I got one today - blown away! Also worth mentioning there's an internal gain adjustment (trim pot) which adjusts the overall gain of the pedal.
I use that I put the gain on the trim pot to about 30 % gain and on the pedal turned the gain all the way down on the pedal. Works incredibly well with an 800 or 800 style amp

Just bought a Dirty Shirley Pedal at Matt's Music in Massachusetts .This demo seems to capture the mojo that the pedal really has .
Nice, that this pedal has the mid knob. In my opinion the BE-OD needs one, too.
Very nice intro, Shawn.

can I known you opinion between XTS Atomic OD and Dirty Shirley, for classic crunch seventies Les Paul recordings? Thank you guy
The XTS Atomic is a bit more focused in the mids than the DS even with the "tight switch". The DS has more lows than the XTS. Both would work well for that type of sound.

Hard to compare them in that way. They're both great. The Module felt more natural to me because it's a tube preamp.
Please we can say that dirty shirley can sound like bluesbreaker ? Also blues driver an sound near of blues driver?
Thanks
Yes, it can sound like a Bluesbreaker, Bluesdriver, JTM 45... All of the above.
I send Thanks to you from Morocco
OMG fantastic
I wanna buy everything you demo! Amazing dynamics in your playing.
Thanks Craig!
Damn you're a maestro player... Like it =)
Thanks so much!
hey Shawn! is it similar (in tone) to one of the Jrockett pedals you already reviewed or closer to some other pedal you know? Thanks.
Shawn Tubbs
Thanks for the in depth answer! Amazing review as always!
What cab/speaker are you going through? sounds great.
Thanks! I'm using a Bogner 2x12 closed back cab with Eminence C75 Speakers.
When is this pedal coming out
great demo! ...what do you use to create your drums?
Thanks Shane, I use EZ Drums.
Shawn Tubbs nice! EZ they are indeed!
I think it would work well as it has some compression and give to it.
Nope, save your money and get a used tube amp, then save more money and buy the Dirty Shirley OD. Running a solid state effects pedal into a solid state amp will not make it sound any warmer or sweeter.
Do you setup your guitar much different for slide parts ,action wise ?
I'm a terrible slide player so I do raise the action a bit but not so high I can't fret behind the slide.
I have the 40 watt dirty shirley and it seems to have to much bottom end no matter how i dial it what kind of pedal could i get to brighten it up?
Ihave the dirty shirley combo amp with the cream absck speaker and i play the treble and mids wide open and the bass almost off and it still is too bassey, so you think one of these pedals would help me?
Does your combo have a gain selector switch on it or is it older?
yes Shawn it does, im lisening to your story on Truetone it is really good to lisen to your story, you are a great guy thanks for takeing the time to answer me back. yes my amp is brand new!
Thanks so much! Well, I think the way to go for you would be to find something that can actually cut lows. Look at the Pettyjohn Filter. It allows for up to 12db boost or cut in the lows, mids, and highs. I think it would work for you.
Great demo! Does it clean up well with the guitars volume pot? (Like the amp does)
It does, and I'm sorry I didn't demo the box that way. I was just so touch sensitive that I didn't even think to roll the volume off for you guys. Thanks Thomas!
How does this pedal compare to the keeley electronics oxblood germanium overdrive?
Hey Richard, sorry but I don't have any experience with that pedal.
Shawn Tubbs Thanks for the quick reply. Awesome demo by the way!
Thanks so much Richard!
Off topic, but what speakers do you like to use in your cabs?
I've been using Eminence CV75 speakers.
Shawn, what is your desert island OD?
I honestly haven't got an answer for that question.
Is there any way i could see a guns n roses style tones on that pedal?
Sold! I'll put it next to my BE-OD. Cheers!
Shawn , where did you have internal gain trim pot set to
Frank Quinn Hey Frank thanks for tuning in! I didn’t even open the DS to look.;) Stock setting. Thanks for the question!
What's the car on the wallpaper? Great demo as always
Thanks man! It's a Viper.
Ah nice!!
shawn which one is better ds or beod?
This pedal makes me really want to learn play guitar even harder
It’s like Chain Lightning with modern solos.
