If you open the pedal you'll see an internal trimpot that adjust the amount of distortion, just like the BE OD. By default it comes in the middle. That means that you can have even more distortion or almost zero, working as a preamp. I use it with zero distortion in the internal trimpot and the gain about 8 or 9 o clock. That's where the pedal shines.
Just acquired one of these. It stacks extremely well with other pedals, before or after. I lowered the internal trim pot all the way down. Still plenty of gain. Put a Wampler mini Tumnus in front and GREAT Googly Moogly what gorgeous tone!!!
Great review and playing , you went from a to z which is refreshing, most pedal reviews just go Eddie all the time , if anything else I would have liked to hear some strat single coils as well but you covered all the other bases, Awesome playing, Thanks
Buddy blues love your playing and your since of humor... what was that look when slid off into the heavy metal zone.... lol. Glad I found your channel... Good review too.. I have been looking at one of these at a local guitar store ,I may have to rent it over the weekend and play it thru my rig and see if I like it...
That sounds great with no gain. The eq extremes are great. Thanks for making the video. What's your opinion of box of Rock by zvex? It's a similar jtm 45 style amp in a box
Thanks so much! It really is a cool pedal. I (sadly) have yet to try a box of rock.. but I've heard them online and they always sound amazing regardless of genre of music that is being played and I love that
I don't get why you have so few subscribers. - you play great - your humour is great - your cyan-pink GTA vice city style background is great Is your accent from somewhere outside the US btw? Not that I'm an expert since I'm not even american, it just sounds a bit different from what I'm used to hear!
@@BuddyBlues I don’t it’s the Lebanon background we can hear. More New York (says I who is not American .. many years ago I lived a year in Tennessee and later a year in Florida)
You’re starting to come up in my searches Buddy. Just subscribed. I like your videos and I expect you’ll continue to grow your channel at a nice clip. Also appreciate that I see you respond to comments and questions. BTW do you have a favorite Plexi style pedal? I’m looking for one that is especially good on lower (to mid) gain, that classic glassy pushed clean type of tone. Thanks!
Hello! Thank you! Look up my video of the October Audio November Gain. To me it sounds really like a plexi and reacts amazingly with dynamics. Of course the friedman does the trick too with a lot more gain on tap. Another one is the JHS Charlie Brown V4. Enjoy!
Love love love this pedal- and I use it for my lead tone (along with a Build Your Own Clone "Shredder" for rhythm tones) in my hard rockin, man-sized riff-based metal band. Love its clarity and attack, its comprehensive EQ section, and (if you know how to ride your volume knob on your Les Paul style guitar), I love its versatility. But you know why I really love it, like REALLY love it? Well heck, the other night at an amazing gig downtown, the beautiful people were so into my TONE as a direct result of plugging into the Dirty Shirley "amp in a box", I went home with not one, not TWO, not THREE, but EIGHT beautiful ladies (they looked like women to me at least). Imagine that! My rig sounded so amazing that night, if facilitated me playing the most hard-rockinest riffs and solos ever! Not to mention a few memorable "encores"! *Wink* 🤣🤣😃👍🦷This was last Friday and I just woke up half an hour ago! Thank you Dirty Shirley, and thank you Friedman products! See you on the road soon! 💥❤️🤡🧠🔥🤘👣
Killer video, mate! Awn, Do you still have your Ceriatone HRM? how do you find your super sonic 22 compared to your HRM? I have a SS 22 but got abit GAS-sy for the HRM.
@@BuddyBlues Not sure if I trust Boutique Amp Distributers anymore So looking to Ceriatone and Mojo Tone MT makes a nice Silvertone 1484 clone but tweaked in a good way. but still that 6L6 Valco goodness A demo on that would be cool too One of the smaller builders
Buddy your channel is awsome man! Your also a virtuoso guitarist as a gigging musician myself have you ever thought about doing any lessons on youtube and sharing some of those tasty chops with us?
This is great Buddy because I've been looking for a pedal that will do my filthiest tones LoL but will never use all that gain Thinking Montrose tones Using. RYRA w an Xotic Super Clean Boost before it SO thinking the RYRA as the clean boost in front of the DS What day you BB ?? Thank you Sir
I tried one for a while I have a Dirty Shirley 40 that I have owned for several years Tried one to use for quick jams when using someone else’s clean amps I also tried owned the small box, the smallbox pedal I liked it better You are right on the dynamics and responsiveness The DS is amazing in this regard Pedal Not so much You want a pedal that is almost indistinguishable from the Dirty Shirley’s preamp section try the Valbrek Kaluna tube OD
Sounds like the boss mega distortion pedal, super harsh like a running a preamp simulator with no cab simulator kind of thing, maybe need to run an ir pedal after it to smooth it out before going into the amp, but that’s like putting a Ferrari in a truck to have a more comfortable seat to dive in, maybe the amp needed to be scooped heaps, or this pedal is not for the blues, I have a few pedal like that, they sit in a box for a year until someone asks me if I can play a heavy metal song, then I grab a guitar that’s been in it’s case for a year with the pedals that have been stashed away from my teenage years play the song and they go back away.
Would I need to use another lense then? I have a fixed 16mm Sigma lense. Excellent quality picture that I don't want to sacrifice. I feel if I sit too far back it wouldn't be as "personal". Going for the "you and I are having a conversation" feel to the video. Sorry I bombarded you with questions haha
@@BuddyBlues Buddy the. Put the camera 3 feet further back, plus you need more light on the face so put the light source a foot closer with a white umbrella. I’m a photographer.
What's sad is watching a video of a complete stranger and commenting without knowing anything about them an opinion that has never mattered. Yours. You're the type of person that hates because of their insecurities. Probably a long time member of the gear page as well. So, hush. Enjoy the basement and the keyboard hate, no one has ever cared about a single thing you've ever said. Ever. Cheers, thanks for the view
I know there's nothing like first-hand experience, but I think you capture the character of the pedals you demo quite well.
Thanks so much for saying that. I try my absolute best not to just be the generic blues guy and be as neutral as possible in my tone to highlight them
Finally a good review on this pedal! Everybody is not a death metal guitar player 👍
No kidding! Fully agree!

It's definitely all about finger placement when playing the box. ;)
"Vibrato"
@@BuddyBlues Really helps it sing.
I read that the DS is a JTM45 with the pre-amp/gain stage modified to a JCM800 -ish circuit...
I didn't know that but it would make sense because of the brightness (plexi-nish?)

I feel you. The OOOOOONLY way this can sound great for Blues is with with Gain at zero. Then it sounds really good
sounds very dark and muffled. I'll take the small box pedal instead please and thank you
