Take the gain trim pot on the BE OD and roll it back to almost off. Adjust the tight control to taste and you get a better mid control and less aggressive dirty sound.
I run the gain at about 10:00 on my BE-OD then run a Tube Screamer as a clean boost in front of it. The Tube screamer puts the mids in the signal, Perfection
You can get the tones more in the same ballpark by backing the mid control of the DS all the way down. The BE-OD has more treble and the high end seems to be slighly brighter. BE-OD is little bit scooped in the mids but if you bring the presence down to around 9-10 oclock the mids come more prominent. Keep in mind that the mid control of the DS is neutral when the control is all the way to the left, it can only add mids. (LATER EDIT--> I am not entirely sure about this, so don´t quote me on that.) I have got a feeble remembrance that Dave said that in some video that I can`t recall . Gain wise there is of course a big difference. You can back of the gain in the BE-OD with the control and trim pot but there is a sweet pot and you lower the gain below that you lose the low end chug and oomph character of the pedal which is IMO one of the main attractions of BE-OD. I like the DS more but I am keeping both of the because they both have their own flavor.
Great video Philip. Both pedals are great, depends on your style playing. Dirty Shirley has more attack especially on leads whereas the BE OD is more of a full sound for rhythm guitar playing
I have the be-od. I find the pedals similar when you take the Mids out the Shirley. That being said, when I go into a lead break I'm going to boost with an eq. Bump up the 800k a little and the notes sing. If you want more meaty tones during rhythm parts in a song just use the eq on the amp or a clean boost that has a nice chunky mid hump... This may not work for everyone but it's worked nicely for me...with everything at 12 o'clock of course the DS is going to sound thicker bc of the mid control turn the presence down on the be-od and it thickens up .....for rock get the DS for metal be-od for sure
Finally a comparison between these two pedals. It sounds like we both went through the same process in trying to figure out the best way to use both pedals. I definitely lean towards the DS side but can't see myself getting rid of my BE. It's a nice "go to" if you need a "metal" type tone. However you have affirmed for me what I was thinking of doing anyway which is to get hold of another DS and use that for my lead tone. I'll use my current DS for the rhythm tone. This essentially means my BE will now just be on my board in case I need to "cut heads". Thanks Phillip.
well i for one could hear distinct differences in the upper mids and treble through this tiny ipad speaker. A LOT of overdrives have these marshall-style flavors. the whole point of the pedal industry is the nuances between em. if youre the type that thinks these both sound the same just buy whatever. some of us make a hobby out of hearing and trying out all these tiny differences. its fun!
To me, they both sound very similar, but I actually prefer the tone of the BE-OD over the Shirley, they're both great pedals without question, but for me it boils down to personal preference
I have both. BE for the heavy rhythmn stuff and DS for heavy lead stuff. I turned the internal trimpot on the DS all the way up to get the same heavy gainstructure as on the BE. The extra mid knob makes the DS better for the leads in my opinion. But when you turn that trimpot all the way up and dial out the mids it almost sounds exactely like the BE.
I used to have the Be od and sold it for the shirley. Dirty shirley is more harmonic and I love having control of the mids. Be is still a great pedal though.
Hi Phillip I personally just live both of these pedals and can use both of these pedals desperately for writing , recording and live applications. First and foremost the Dirty Shirley and the BEOD just sound and feel like 2 completely different animals in my musical mind I hear a plate reverb and some compression on the BEOD and on the Dirty Shirley I can hear a chamber reverb and a modulated delay with the effect mix on the modulated delay at about 10:30 for leads and the BEOD for rhythms only. With my wedding coming up on November 17th I wish these 2 pedals desperately would appear thank you Phillip for doing this video
The BE OD sounds like a nice bedroom practice pedal. But no mids = disappearing act in a mix. A lesson I learned the hard way in one of my earlier live gigs when a Blue Voodoo with a Boss GT-6 (I think that was the correct model) used as a preamp buried my 5150 regardless of how much I rolled up the volume. And that was NOT a quiet amp. :D
Played both of these today with the intent of playing metal-influenced skate punk/melodic hardcore and I very much preferred the Dirty Shirley. The BE-OD is more compressed than I like and sounded AWFUL with palm muting, notes rang out long after I fully muted the strings. Just super muddy. Definitely going to take the Shirley with me next time I head into the studio as I like its tone a lot better than what I get out of my JCM2000.
Thanks for the great video! I was leaning toward the dirty shirley but wasn't quite sure until now. I also want to mention that you have some of the best and informative vids on the tube, so thanks again.
Good vid Phil. I was thinking of picking up one of these as a stocking stuffer for myself during the holiday. This demo convinced me to go for the Dirty Shirley. More versatile and sounds more organic.
The tight and the presence controls cover the midrange on the BE-OD. Play with the two and the lower and upper mids come through. Says it right in the directions.
Ahh man now I want both! Shirley sounds thick and fat with creamy leads which is everything I want in a pedal for a classic rock/ metal sound. The BE sounds tight, saturated, and a little brighter than the Shirley so I think it would great to tighten and brighten a really low downtuned modern metal sound that has an amp with good attack and chunk but could use a little help keeping the low end clarity strong. Agree or Disagree?
It seems the Dirty Shirley has a bit more growl to it on the hard power chords. They are both amazing! Now I'm not sure which I like more. I know this though. I'm now In love with the Dirty Shirley! Thank you for the awesome review! ❤️ 🆒🙏🏽
Much prefer the DS, make the BE sound thin and buzzy in comparison. Now, does the BE-OD Deluxe get the same tones as the Dirty Shirley being it now has the added mids knob?
They both sound great. I would never need the BE for the type of music I play, but it's a great box to give instant metal rhythm tone. I wonder how the Dirty Shirley sounds with the gain turned way down. Does it get thin? I would probably more into the Buxom Boost.
The Shirley is more open sounding. The b e sounds more scooped and metal. The Shirley sounds like everything but metal but could do hard rock well. Glad I am choosing the dirty
That was an awesome compare and contrast. I tend to love the big creamy lead tones as well especially when playing blues using single coils. Hey Phil, I asked about the Schrecter PT traditional 3 saddle to 6 saddle direct replacement. I absolutely love the guitar. Especially the neck, but the 3 saddle is giving me fits. If you or anyone else knows where I could pick up a 6 saddle direct or close replacement I would really appreciate it...Thanks!
Nice comparison! I’ve been pushing my BE-OD with my tube screamer. Of course I drop the gain a bit and raise the the tone on the tube screamer to reach that more rounded tone like the DS.
I really like my DS pedal but I’m looking to add a different tonal flavor to my board with a lower gain voicing. Would the Tumnus Deluxe be a good choice?
If the be od had a mid control it would be perfect for what it's doing. I guess with the shirley you'll have a lot less trouble to cut through in a band context, which can be tough with the be od ...
I have the BE OD but not the DS....The BE OD really is better with an eq in front of it to help push those mids up more. It's a bit too mid scooped for my classic rock tastes.I bought the BE OD before the DS came out but seems I would prefer the DS.
Can you test how well dirty shirley stacks with some kind of od on low to medium gain, not necessarily be-od? I'm playing through zvex distortron (always on, low/med gain), which goes into catalinbread manx loaghtan (which is essentially a ramshead big muff with bandaxall eq), and i love this combo, but muff doesn't clean up the way i would like it to, and can sound relatively gated at times depending on the amp, unless i crank the sustain to near max, and i was thinking about getting a distortion pedal intead, which will clean up better, but still preserve sustain, smothness and high gain qualities of a big muff, so i wonder if this one can get me there. Or to simplify my question, can it do (for example) "Metallica", "Melvins" (or similar) high gain sound when stacked with another od? Thanks!
Does that guitar have like a super wide fretboard or is it just an optical illusion, looks super beefy almost like you could fit 7 strings on it if you wanted to
Hey Phil, love your videos,, Hey I wonder , if we have a 100 watt head connected to 2 speaker cabinets, is the head pushing 100 watts or 50 watts to each speaker cabinet ?? tnx much
DS seems much more open sounding. Both a little fizzy. I like a little fuzzy rasp on a distortion, but not that much. I prefer my Suhr Riot and 808. BE has a switch inside that make it a good plexi like pedal for lower gain stuff, or so I heard?
I own the Be-OD. Still not sure about it as I lean towards lower gain settings. The Dirty Shirley is definitely more mid-pushed however, it sounds a bit too aggressive for me. I would prefer another boost pedal like a Klon type, Tubescreamer, even a Micro Amp for leads.
I know what Im asking Santa for xmas! Thanks Phil, Dirty Shirley is at least 10x creamier and definately fatter. The BE-OD is like Dave was just learning his craft and now he's taken all his tricks and threw them in the DS. Definitely a keeper.
Thanks Phil! To my ears the mid scooped Shirley was almost indistinguishable to the BE (not watching; just ear phones). Later on the Shirley just sounded like a better, more dynamic/responsive BE OD
Massie Gauthier I just sold my fender deluxe. Great clean amp. I sold it because I live in an apartment and as you know that shit is loud as fuck. Sold it bought an ac15. From this video the dirty Shirley is would be more versatile.
The be od to me sounds like it’s pretty much made for metal tones it sounds like more of a distortion pedal than an overdrive. The dirty Shirley is an overdrive that can achieve metal tones. That’s just me though.
@@BleedBlueNYR1994 Thank you, I was actually wondering whether the dirty Shirley would cover Megadeth or Metallica tones, so you kind of read in my thoughts :) well, I'm looking to cover hard rock and metal, with a natural gain. I already have a Carl Martin plexitone, composed of two channels with a 20db boost, and the boost can actually kick the clean Amp or just another pedal. I'm trying to convince myself that the Dirty Shirley is what I am looking for, as it is very responsive to picking and accurate.
Massie Gauthier dude I’ve been playing guitar for like 15 years. Also trying to find that tone for 15 years. It’s a never ending cycle. That dirty Shirley sounds great. I think if you’ve got a crunchy amp plus a boost you can get that early Metallica megadeath thing. Pretty middy. Later stuff with the scooped mids will be a little harder. But that’s just my ear and I suck. But good luck dude. I think you’ll be good either way honestly.
@@BleedBlueNYR1994 I finally got the dirty shirley, as I had the exact same feeling about it, and you are perfectly right. Plus I purchased it new for 160€ (a momentary miracle on ebay). I didn't had the hot rod yet, but tried one and it was way too loud for home practice so I ended up with a Ibanez tube screamer amp 15 watts combo (TSA15C), a monocanal (pretty clean, just in between American and British tone) with an inner tube screamer as a drive "canal". Great clean tone and vintage overdrive. However, the dirty shirley sounds bad on this guy (it's a Second hand though) but according to what I've read so far, the Celestion seventy 80 inside the combo doesn't handle high gain very well. I can perceive the quality of that pedal but I hear a crappy fizz over it undermining the tone considerzbly. I wonder if I'm going to swap the speaker, or of the problem comes from somewhere else; as a matter of fact, I'm reading everywher that this amp works great with pedals, so I'm a bit worrying, I don't understand.
Thanks for doing big chunky power chords, most reviewers play soft and almost clean blues with the dirty shirley. Blus is alright, I love blues. But with a Friedman? Let her rip!
Both do sound good, but the BE-OD seems to lack some lower midrange edge that seems to give the DS that extra umph for lead & the power chords. Just in this comparison, it seems the BE-OD lacks overall low end and does have a good bit of the high end 'fizz' as if a treble booster was out front or akin to a JTM-45 high end when overdriven. ??? :) With a guitar & amp w/plenty low end, the BE is probably a good match, else the DS may be the box to have. And I do like the more 'creamy' tones from the DS better overall as my personal choice for default jamming, despite having the occasional need for the 'fizziness' of the BE in recording/mixing scenarios.
shirley is huge on the mids, much better with the band around. I played one at my local shop next to my bogner ecstasy red (which I adore) but the DS blows the bogner out of the water when it comes to clarity. like someone took a blanket out from in front of your cab.
Hey Phill, love you channel. Got a question about the neon pink Charvel San Dimas I just got. Ok on the back of the headstock, are those three manufacturing stickers easy to remove? Is it just a matter of peeling them off with a finger nail and your done? You know how stickers go sometimes .. they can be VERY hard to remove and leave a gooey mess. If they leave sticker residue what do you use to clean that off with? Thought I'd ask here since its your newest video and I figured you be more apt to see it. Thanks for your channel .. I've learned a lot man 👍
Kingston Harney Thanks for the suggestion Kingston. I use to use googone, but it smells pretty bad (to me at least) and always left a lingering odor in the house, so I experimented with some pure virgin olive oil instead and found it removed sticker residue just as well as googone with zero odor. Thing is I'm not sure what and what not to use on what looks to me to be an unfinished maple guitar neck. I'm hoping Phill chimes in as he has the same guitar.
Take the gain trim pot on the BE OD and roll it back to almost off. Adjust the tight control to taste and you get a better mid control and less aggressive dirty sound.

Robert Earl, exactly!
there you go. That Mid knob idea on the BE OD is redundant with all respect to Phil
What are your settings on the TS? I am looking for an OD pedal to stack on a TCE Dark Matter. I was initially set on BE OD, now I’m not sure
Settings on my Tube Screamer are.....Drive about 8 o'clock, Tone about 11 o'clock, Level about 2:30. Hope that makes sense.
right on!

Shirley all the way!!!
I like them both, but I agree with you. DS is killer
Try the new friedman small box pedal - it's awesome!
BE-OD Deluxe with the mid range knob, and pot adjustments. A beautiful thing.
Great Demo, I totally agree with your conclusion, this beefy creamy crunchy lead tone. Amazing pedal !
Defiantly the Shirley. Would like to hear a comparison between the Dirty Shirley & Angry Charlie.
Exactly!! Waint for that too!
Exactly
I third that!!
They All sound great.need THAT aggression, lower than $200.
The Dirty Shirley with the mids scooped does sound like the BE OD. If I had to choose one I would go with the Dirty Shirley.
BE-OD has more compression on the lows, IMO. Add a drummer and band, then the dirty shirley will cut through and shine with all those mids.

keaganthorify I do the same thing with a Maxon OD808. Comes out beautifully.
keaganthorify the Tumnus into the BE-OD is also a great combo
I’m glad I’m not the only one lol! Everything is going thru my Les Paul into the Marshall DSL 40 and I’m extremely happy!
Great comparison Phil! I preferred the DS. Hey, what amp were you running through? I assume you were using a completely clean base tone to start.
My vote is yes on a BE-OD "2". Add the mid and you have historic pedal! And yes I know it sells and sounds good but still, just think about it Dave ;)
I really like my DS pedal but I’m looking to add a different tonal flavor to my board with a lower gain voicing. Would the Tumnus Deluxe be a good choice?
Thanks a Lot for Your Explaination on minutes 3:13 Comparing The Mids of dirty shirley :)
Phil, can you get the same tonal quality out of the DS as the same or similar to the DS Mini? To me this sounds closer to the 40w version!
I have the be-od and always missed the mid control on it. Phil what about a comparison between the DS and the JHS Angry Charlie v3?
If the be od had a mid control it would be perfect for what it's doing. I guess with the shirley you'll have a lot less trouble to cut through in a band context, which can be tough with the be od ...

HIi Phil, what about a shootout between the dirty shirley and the tc electronic equivalent as there is a huge difference in the price.
Does the Shirley has an internal trim pot like BE OD ?
Yes
Thanks for doing big chunky power chords, most reviewers play soft and almost clean blues with the dirty shirley.
Blus is alright, I love blues. But with a Friedman? Let her rip!
Use my PEARL for transparent just up about 2 or 3 and use it kinda like preamps, I do it’s set my amp on the amp to it. And it sounds great.
I just ordered the filthy Shirley so to me it sounds better than the winky brown eye.
is there a limiter before the soundcard?
Both do sound good, but the BE-OD seems to lack some lower midrange edge that seems to give the DS that extra umph for lead & the power chords. Just in this comparison, it seems the BE-OD lacks overall low end and does have a good bit of the high end 'fizz' as if a treble booster was out front or akin to a JTM-45 high end when overdriven. ??? :)
With a guitar & amp w/plenty low end, the BE is probably a good match, else the DS may be the box to have. And I do like the more 'creamy' tones from the DS better overall as my personal choice for default jamming, despite having the occasional need for the 'fizziness' of the BE in recording/mixing scenarios.
For the section you first asked about- on an iPhone speaker they sounded the same to my ears.
Would love to know what amp this was run into? Was it setup clean or edge of breakup or crunch?
I use Fender Clean amps for all demos
Thanks Phil!
shirley is huge on the mids, much better with the band around. I played one at my local shop next to my bogner ecstasy red (which I adore) but the DS blows the bogner out of the water when it comes to clarity. like someone took a blanket out from in front of your cab.
Really useful - thanks.
Is there one that you prefer?
The mids makes such a big difference
The DS sounds fatter than the od!
Can we just simply turn the amp's mid knob up for beod?
I think something's wrong with your audio rendering.. the volume seems to float in and out while you're playing.
Unfortunately these pedals don't work in the effect loop. Overall sound of the DS or BE depends how good your clean sound is to make em really shine.
I’m surprised how good my DS sounds through my BF Vibrolux. It actually sounds better than some Marshalls I’ve owned.
Phillip: Would you do another version of this video with some adjustments to the internal gain pots? This is a nice video but seems incomplete....
At 6.15 Phil gets the Eric Johnson tones out of the Shirley
Thanks you helped me decide.....Dirty Shirley
