- Kyle is in Colorado with the 2022 Tesla Model X which is the long range, all-wheel drive variant. This vehicle is equipped with the standard 20" wheel and tire package and has less than 10,000 miles on the odometer to keep it a pretty fresh car!

Another informative video.. This real world range test is really very helpful for EV enthusiasts.. Thanks guys
I was literally wondering this week when you were going to test the Model X. I can't wait to watch.
That is absolutely crazy that the Model X had the exact same efficiency(~281 Wh/mi) as the Model 3 Performance. I can’t stress enough how significant that is.
It looks same as model Y, so I can't believe why this one costs 130k. The inside is a joke compared to the craftsmanship, luxury in a BMW for 100k.
@@PrzyjemnePieniadze
The bmw still looks outdated inside but better than previous beamers, buttons and a joy stick is tacky. Lets not even start about that grill 🤣
@@ogzombieblunt4626"looks outdated", you must be coming from the distant future mate 😆😅I've seen a lot of reviews of BMW iX and I've never come across opinnion like yourse.
@@PrzyjemnePieniadze nice job liking your own comment 🤣
Yes my moms lexus had a joystick. Super tacky.
@@ogzombieblunt4626 I guess it's logical that I like my comments 😆😁
I think you should get an award for non stop talking the whole time 😂😂😂 great video.
I really like your personal channel, btw. Really enjoyed the VW Jetta GLI content. Thank you
"it's about 98 to 100 degrees right now" Kyle says in a hoodie, lol I love it. Great video as always.
😂
Kyle, do you have a spreadsheet or a post that lists out all of your tests? I just would like to see what capacities you (and crew) have run the vehicles through. I have a 2020 MS performance, and 324 at 100% (estimated) and am curious if I could achieve the 330+ miles as I can easily achieve less than 280 watts/mile on highway runs. Also looking at bolts and and E-trons as well. Thanks in advance, just a nerd wanting to see numbers. PS hope the Plaid is on the road sooner than later!!
There's a playlist with all his videos about MPG and efficiency
Great review!
If my memory is correct, you range tested IX in efficient mode. Based on my 1000 mile driving experiences with IX, I feel in more time efficient mode uses one motor. Don't know for sure, just my feeling. That may experience why IX out ran EPA estimation by 60+ miles.
280W hours per mile is pretty incredible. Given that my 2018 performance model three with 20 inch tires averages 300. Just shows how efficient Teslas have become in only four years.
BMW is actually more impressive in motor technology considering it weighs quite a bit more that the Tesla, has 22" wheels, and doesn't look like a tear drop. Those who bemoan the ix for the bigger battery, forget to consider the fact that the bigger heavier battery also reduces efficiency.
too bad they are junk in everything else.
@@hotrod182 Its really not more impressive. 15% more battery is a huge difference.
@@SirDragonClaw The bigger battery also weighs more, and the BMW weighs more, because its premium in every facet. Seriously, after sitting in the BMW, the Tesla feels cheap.
@@SirDragonClaw Yeah, but when you buy something at that price, everything else matters. Besides better range the ix is quieter, better ride, better quality, better stereo, better laser headlights, has advanced HUD, more exclusive, etc, etc. But if you are looking for efficiency, the Tesla wins. But the main reason that matters is for range. And even in the point, the Tesla loses. And as a brand, BMW is #1 in consumer reports latest brand survey. Tesla was far far behind. Losing , Losing.
Kyle - what software version was the car on? Apparently the last two versions - staring with .6 - have caused an issue on all refresh s and x vehicles that results in a harmonic hum that is audible but not that loud (you may not have noticed it outside as opposed to in a garage), something to do with frequency setting when the connectors are closed. I have no idea what that actually means, but it is said to affect range a bit. So it’s worth understand if this may have been a factor for your test.
True test is Los Angeles to Las Vegas/ driving on average 75 - 85mph and up/down elevation. Currently only 400+ range EVs can make it nonstop.
Nice Job Kyle, You always make Sure the Test are FAIR. ... I Like your line : " I don't care what it is, I Just want to Know what it Does. " I did expect a little bit more Range on this X. Thanks for the Video. 😁
We have the new X/ and it's really the FSD surprisingly of all things that I love the most
Hi, How would you compare the road noise between the 2020 Model S 21in wheels to this?
How does the air conditioning feel at 70 mph for 320 miles? Did you use it sparingly or full time ? Thanks in advance.
you could also have pushed the BMW IX M60 even further you had still almost 50% power available on that test means you could probably have went another 5-10 miles. Bmw usually have a pretty big bottom butter.
Kyle can you please do a range test with a model s plaid with 19 inch wheels. Or a long range model s with 19 inch wheels.
How much does the wrap affect the range. I would think that the finish on the wrap would affect the aero.
My mx2020 on avg is 285w no rear seat bench and loaded with tools it’s the best service truck ever and I prefer no cabin camera :)
Where did you get the CCS adapter? I have been trying to get one but they are not on the Tesla store
is that the Tesla made CCS adapter from South Korea or the 3rd party one?
You state full charge range of 351 but Tesla websites states that the long range MX, 20" wheels with 6-seat interior provides 348 miles on full charge. 351 miles is only available on 5-seat configuration, 20" wheels.
It will be great to put these results in a table and post the link in your website. We were having this discussion w my neighbour about TMX new gen vs BMW iX M60 and he would not believe me. Anyways just a thought......
Wow, what wrap does it have ?? Gorgeous
Hey Kyle, what adapter were you using when charging (CCS -> Tesla)?
Its the Tesla original CCS1 to Tesla plug adapter that have been imported to USA from South Korea.
Now that the MX starts at $80K does that change your opinion on which is the better value? Also which would get you to 600 miles faster on a road trip? Just sold my MME and looking at both. After having a CCS car, pretty sure I’m going Model X. Thoughts? Love all you guys do!
You got this right! After owning two ccs cars I will go for Tesla immediately! But if the infrastructure changes, who knows...
In the US where non-tesla network sucks, Tesla makes most sense. But if I'm in most other countries where all manufactures have to conform to unified charging standard, I'll take the BMW.
I’m excited for 2025 in the US when everyone will be using NACS as a native plug on their cars and charging stations will all become more and more standardized. I can’t imagine buying a car in 2024 with a CCS port. Next year could be the big year for EV’s here. I think for the money I’d still choose the MX over the BMW, but I couldn’t blame anyone (next year) for going with the iX. It looks like a great vehicle.
KIA EV9 AWD is the vehicle to go for. Way cheaper, way more space, awesome styling + fast charging and just 50miles less range at most (A 45°F range test achieved 266mi, I would expext it to go at least 15miles more in summer).
Lots to like about EV9 but several deal killers. 1. It should be way cheaper, but dealers are asking $20k plus markup. So until that stops, off the list. 2. Still uses CCS plug, did that already…. no thanks. 3. Range isn’t great for a family hauler. 4. No tax credit offered. I’d look at this in a couple years when all those issues will be addressed, just not today. But I could say that about every EV being offered today. 2025-2026 will be transformative for auto industry IMO
Kyle, would you say it is much noisier than the current model Y?
So Tesla Model X has minus 20 miles vs EPA and BMW has plus 65 miles vs EPA ...interesting 🤔
epa uses 2 cycle test with bmw vs 5 cycle test with Tesla. I don't know why there's 2 separate EPA tests its complete bs
@@noway6238 Yeah, those different test gives some funky results😁
@@djprojectus What you really want is all the companies to do the 5 test scheme, as more conditions and systems are actually in use when deriving the results.
They be cheating & paying them off.
CAN Bus data shows about 94kwh usable so getting 93 used is pretty good.
Good way to estimate the cybertruck. Cybertruck battery is 20% larger, but also 20% more weight and 20% drag. So safe to assume 300 miles is actually doable
is it more efficient than the model x 100d from 2020?
Is this like that Kramer Seinfeld episode? Haha
Where can I find the promised recap of the Race To Vegas video?
Hey, why not use the OBD port like Bjorn does to get more info
It would be better if there was only 1 EPA testing protocol, and not 2 and letting OEMs to reduce the range value of the test.
All cars should be able to achieve a similar percentage of the EPA highway range on your test. And yes, all OEMs should publish all the EPA values. 🤷♂️
"Getting real toasty in here..." Bruh, you're wearing a hoodie! otherwise great vid
For "properly" you need OBD scanners.
I thought the efficiency on the Model X would be really horrible at 70mph. This is quite surprising to see how great the efficiency is. I thought it would be like 400 wh/m.
I used to think that an i4 m50 for $85k was high, but these $100K+ cars are ridiculous.
I would love see these tests at a more realistic speed of 60mph as well Kyle. Great video though.
Why would 60 MPH be more "realistic" than 70 MPH?
How about a more realistic speed of 8*? LOL. The real world range of my XPlaid from 90% down to 10% is only 200 mi. Hope this helps yall set some expectations.
cant wait for the model X to be released in Thailand :D i want a 7 seater EV
My Tesla is having an aneurysm at the sight of another Tesla's battery being abused ( run down to approx. 0%). I think people are too obsessed with range. My driving on a road trip would barely change at all even given another 50 miles of range. I'd still stop at the same stations and speed the same amount of time charging (or nearly so).
one question where did you get the CCS1 adapter
Tesla sells them $250
The battery in the refresh S/X is smaller than previously.
So don’t assume you’d get much more from a fresh pack.
Very interesting results. So the iX 50 would go even further than the m60 meaning it could beat the model x by as much as 20-30 miles in range with similar performance numbers. Fully loaded they're also similarly priced. So if you don't want the insane Plaid, which would destroy the M60 in performance, I guess the iX 50 would be the clear choice over the normal Model X then.
It makes sense - the iX50 has a range estimate of 630km (wltp), and the new X is at 580km (wltp). The iX does not have that much space though, looks like a boat with beaver teeth, currently lacks the charging network that Tesla has (even though it can use the Tesla network in a few countries such as Norway.. blocking chargers for others due to location of charge port), and the software is not even close. New BMW seats are not as good either… imo, but that is subjective, but the iX seats are just way too flat for me.
I am curious… just as with dirt and grime, will a matte folio affect the range due to more wind resistance?
@@AleksanderHoffit actually could effect the range it’s not as slippery as paint. Plus it adds weight so it might affect it few miles I assume
Tesla: "I am No.1, so why try harder?" 😏
BMW: "O RLY?" 😋
BMW X7 X-Drive petrol is the competition. Not the BMW iX.
Audi A6 TFSI is the competition. Not the Audi E-Tron.
And no: Tesla is not number one. The environment and our lungs are.
Wow that model X looks great with that wrap and slammed, so sweet!
Great review. I'm impressed by the iX, particularly given that it was shod with 22" wheels (vs 20" for Tesla X). The EV world is still Tesla-centric, however, with all these new cars being introduced, I can begin to see it become more diverse and multi-faceted.
Did you have the A/C on the whole time?!
98 degrees and he's wearing a hoodie lol
Great job Kyle!!! This should be a wake up call for Tesla. I don’t think anyone spending ~70% more for Model X over a Y wants similar range. X is 130 grand, Tesla flagship. drivetrain efficiency means not many extra cells to get X to 400. should be at least the same range as Model S.
Not advocating a mileage range race, but Tesla needs to set a range standard for their premium car.
Model Y is for the masses, Model X is not. So people looking to buy the X will not buy it for its range. I’m talking from experience as I bought a X Plaid and traded in a model 3 performance and have already driven 2500 miles to Yellowstone and had no issue with range. I love the performance and the 6 seat configuration for my family.
@@NeilSalaria 3 performance handles so much better tho especially with a great after market support. But I guess not nearly as practical as the x
I have a X Plaid and a Y LR. The X is more comfortable, feels a lot more roomier, and of course way faster.
Both great cars and the X is for people who want more than what the Y provides. Especially if you often drive with a family. The 6 seat configuration is the best
Lol wake up call for Tesla to🤣. Tesla is selling more electric cars than anyone else today 😜 besides both the model S and Model X are not Tesla priority anymore in regards to what companies goal to produce more electric cars. The S and X are just side projects for Tesla and it's engineers thus you have not seen a total refresh of both cars.
Haha wake up call, what are you talking about. Tesla is the number one EV manufacturer in the world. And they are doing it with bigger margins. Everyone else is paying more for their batteries AND having to use more of them in their cars. This is a wake up call to the legacy auto industry. Bankruptcy is around the corner.
Why there’s no range test for ice car?
Good luck actually getting an iX. It's an amazing vehicle but they've only delivered a few thousand in the US. Tesla has the advantage of producing a much higher quantity of BEVs. Also, I think the front end of the iX looks sweet with that self healing grill. People just aren't ready for the futuristic design.
Another great range test analysis from Kyle Connor! Thank you! I prefer BMW iX M50 for reasons Kyle cited (i.e. smooth ride, QUIET, luxurious feel, ~$15K less expensive) but Tesla’s performance wins, if that’s a key buying feature.
But the BMW isn’t a fascist mobile. Give Elon money? Oh hell no.
I already have the model Y, so for my wife I will get the BMW ix instead. The price is lower and the range is the same.
How do they compare in space, cargo capacity and safety? The charging network is a big one.
@@troyp9485 Germany is helping Russia lol
Good luck charging and goin on road trips
Tesla Flex!
I wonder how much energy autopilot is using
Unless I'm missing something, the Model X didn't even reach its EPA range, while the iX exceeded its EPA range. To me, that's a bigger takeaway than which went farther. Consumers should know what they're getting up front.
Also, if it was due to battery degradation, frankly, 10,000 miles just isn't that much. If the Model X lost that much capacity after only 10,000 miles, that's more concerning than anything else.
As he refers to, Tesla's are by far the worst in real world tests vs EPA range. Most other EV's meet or exceed their stated range.
@@curtisbme Yes, I'm aware, and that is because Tesla chooses to use a more optimistic EPA testing cycle than almost ever other automaker. I'm just saying that that is the bigger takeaway than the actual difference in range.
Also, that amount of degradation is ridiculous. Only having 93 kWh usable after 10,000 miles is a lot of degradation. Even if Tesla is advertising their gross pack capacity, it's lost several percent of capacity in less than a year's worth of driving.
Model S long range test possible?
That is crazy. I am lucky to get 340wh/mi in my Plaid X
I wish Tesla let model 3 and Y see voltage and amperage instead of just kW
remember the car charges faster when it is completely off. walking away and let charge without any other draw of energy. just a bit of advice
This is why I think it would be nice to get vehicles EPA rated for 400-450 miles to put the range with one charge comparable to that of current ICE vehicles.
Hope the cars won’t gain too much weight in trying to do so
Ice trucks have that range. Not sure about most cars.
That yoke steering wheel with the gear changer on screen would so annoy me…
I don't think it's 3kwh, it's 4.5% of usable capacity which corresponds roughly to 3kwh, so obviously this will change with degredation
For noise, please get a sound meter. I'll prefer measurement rather than opinion!!!!
How hot does the car get? The windshield makes me think it would be uncomfortably hot at times.
The tinting Tesla does on their glass is quite strong. I have a ‘22 model 3 and I’ve driven it through several 100 degree F days, stayed very cool inside!
@@chandler5014 my car today. Couple of minor things that Tesla needs to fix but overall really happy with it. I got used to the yoke within seconds. The regenerative braking is a little tougher.
@@lance4862 regen breaking does indeed take a little time to get used to 😂
EPA range testers need to be watching your video and adjust their ratings accordingly. I hate how EPA ratings are always off on all cars. I think they hyper mile to get the ranges.
I have a Fisker Karma and I can go like 359k and it’s electric and gas …I can choose anytime…if I run out of electricity I can keep going in gas mode (sport mode) never having to really charge..when in sport mode energy is being put back into the battery..if I run out of gas then I have electric..best of both worlds
No big surprise that there's a hidden buffer on the "fuel". My friend's 85 Accord routinely ran 20+ minutes after the fuel light went on. My own car had a 13+ gallon tank, but even when the gauge said "dead empty!" the most that could be stuffed in the tank was 10 gallons, indicating a 75 mile reserve.
And then there were older Jaguars, with two separate tanks, like aircraft, so if you picked up bad gas you could simply switch over to the other tank.
Personally, I'd rather just have accurate fuel/range gauges.
I have steering wheel vibration above 55 mph in my 2023 Tesla X. Had it road forced balanced, still vibration. Took it to tesla service and was told the vibration is within Tesla specifications. Quite a disappointment.
Shouldn’t have any vibrations. Picked up a new X Plaid and noticed a little vibration at 75mph on the drive home. Took it in and they ended up having to replace 3 of the tires - these were brand new and only had less than 200 miles on them from the drive home. They chalked it up to defective tires.
Just picked up a new Model S and was wondering what’s the best way to protect the battery health? I set max charge to 70% and try keeping the battery between 40-70% as much as possible. Is there anything else I should be doing?
Try to keep it cooler when possible, like not parking in direct sun or in hot garages. Not running sentry mode and reduce heater usage also help save some unnecessary cycles on your battery. Some people might even go to the extreme of not navigating to supercharger to help keep the battery cooler for longer
@@rudyyyxu I appreciate that, thank you!
@@andrewe868 yeah enjoy your model s!
70% max doesn't make sense imo. tesla recommends 90% charge regularly, keep above 10%, minimize supercharging
@@sameleanya4987 oh do they?? I didn’t know that! Maybe I should start charging to 90%
That had carbon fiber interior trim. That’s a PLAID Model X. You said yours was a LR???
wait, is that Tesla flex's model x?
1:15, well, i guess i got my answer XD
So essentially Tesla "banked" 7 kWh from their 100 kWh pack. I read the iX pack is OVER 111 kWh.
Great work as always.
What is the weight of both vehicles? There are factors not being talked about.
Also aero is a super important factor especially on highway testing. The fact that BMW needs a bigger battery tells a lot about the differences between the two.
@@paulsandgren8625 Well, the bigger battery weights more too. BMW weighs hundreds of lbs more, has 22" wheels, and doesn't look like a teardrop. Impressive results if you ask me.
The lens on the phone appears to be dirty. You can tell by the haze. You need to wipe it clean periodically with a microfiber clothe.
It’s interesting in your videos people are always taking pictures next to the state boarder signs. I live on the MN/WI boarder and I’ve never seen anyone taking pics next to our welcome to WI sign
I'll post one for you in my EQS🤞
Man so difficult living in states that are 80mph freeway speed like Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska and only go 70. My wife’s new model X will do the speed limit. I’ll stop and supercharge it 😂
Road noise would be my only reason to move away from Tesla after 9 years, (3 types ofmodel S). I hope they address this finaly soon!!
2022 model y lr next
I don't think Tesla is playing the range game anymore, just efficiency and charge speed. There will be 500 miles range variants of every model, but not for any significant percentage of the fleet.
How convenient? Once you get beat in a category, just say we are not playing that game anymore...lol
They no longer make the fastest charging vehicles or range. The main advantage is the charging network and software.
@@J_Dugs within the next five years tesla is going to have to lower the price of thier vehicles because within 5 years they will no longer be the best charging network and they will have to really be priced at what they really should have been from the beginning which is 30 to 40k for a base to 60k to 70k for the top of the line tesla has been overpriced it isnt nothing special and in 5 years reality will set in
@@J_Dugs it doesn't make sense to say that an EV can charge faster if it doesn't have a proper charging network and has sheet efficiency.
@@justinjones6810 Tesla does plan to reduce price. Manufacturing cost of a Tesla battery is already 30% lower.
Yet, they keep increasing price because the demand is there and order backlog is long.
The margin Tesla make on each car is crazy for the volume they are selling.
Tesla margin is like 30% profit.
If FSD work-out, the margin is going to be even bigger.
So, a lot of margin to reduce the price.
While other OEMs are starting to produce EVs, they are the least profitable models for them.
Which is why traditional OEM don't want to sell many EVs.
Something looks off about the front wheels.
I'm in my 50s, I would love to buy an EV, but these prices are too high for me and I really would like an SUV EV model.
I will try to help my boys into one.
How can you wear a Hoodie in 98 degrees 😫 that's 36 Celsius 😝
To make the long story short 27:28
Sorry but it doesn’t sum up. It still looks like Tesla is only showing the energy going to the motors, otherwise the degradation after only 10.000 miles would be too much.
Either that or Elon is not being quite honest about battery size. You know, he managed to go 100kWh, why should the new model X now have to have a 95kWh?
A last question, are you really sure about the rear motor being a PM one. The pre-plaid S had the Midel3 rear motor (PM) on the front and a induction motor in the back to get that much power into the available space, that’s why that model S was a FWD on the highway( ECO mode anyone). So it makes me doubt that the’ end changed that rear motor to a new PM one, losing some efficiency.
Super informative. Real world range is critical. Important mention of the iX. Those rascally sandbagging Germans.
I would love see these tests at 80mph as well Kyle. Really good thorough stuff!
I want to see these tests at a more realistic speed of 50-60mph as well.
@SirDragonClaw depends where you live, here in texas, 80mph is pretty normal highway speed. You'll get run off the road going 50-60.
5 seater vs 7 seater. Not a fair comparison.
3.57 mile per kWh
Can you drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas with one full charge, no stopping to charge?
Actually Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV has an even longer range at 70 MPH as this channel proves 375.8 miles, and is an even better place to be vs BMW iX. That is going to be the longest 70 mph range in any EV SUV untill Lucid Gravity comes on the market.
I think that coating of poop effected the aerodynamic drag…
I don’t care about a little range difference. I'm Tesla and only Tesla from now on.
Eqs 450 gets 450 on the sedan and 350 on the suv
Why is this guy wearing a sweatshirt when he said it’s 98-100F outside?
I'm not sure which is scarier. $130,000 for something that's not a European sports coupe, or the number of Americans who have had the money and bought these.
Lots of early Tesla investors buy these.
