  • Kyle is back with another typical 70mph highway range test, this time with the 2023 BMW iX M60! This iX has 22" wheels and is configured to be the least efficient offering, however the range that this car had was truly insane. Take a look!

      High temperate + high elevation = low air resistance. Pays dividends versus the rated EPA range for a vehicle as large as the iX.

      The Germans, especially BMW are very good at lying about their performance figures. They claim the i4 m50 can hit 62 in 3.9 seconds, but it actually, it can go it in 3.5 seconds. It is just a part of German automotive culture.
      Regarding battery performance, however, is another story.

    Thanks for another great video Kyle. I consistently saw 350miles of range on my IX 50 (22inch wheels) traveling cross country from Maryland to Washington State. I got even more range with regen on I70 from Denver to Grand Junction over the pass (my favorite stretch of the trip). This video just confirms it and even in an IX 60! I agree with you on the how amazingly quiet this car is. It is a road trip pleasure.

      @@davidbailey6112 Good to hear - I expect that the iX seats are highly adjustable.
      I don't really like the seats in my i3, I think the main problem is that I'm too small for the seats. When I sat all the way back, my circulation would get cut off at my knees. If I didn't sit all the way back, my back would start to hurt. I installed an air bladder to provide some lumbar support, and really to push me forward, so that my knees aren't cut off but it's still not great. Oh well, I guess it's one of the issues with driving a "budget" BMW.

      It's also not the real world. If you can afford ixm60 there's no way in hell you're going to drive it like that. The test Kyle conducted is pretty meaningless. How many steadydrives do you conduct? I just bought a 330xi because I couldn't get an electric car in a reasonable period of time. It's a 4 cyl and all things considered it's a reasonably sprited car. The car is rated 34 highway. I just did a 200 mile trip, all highway, low traffic, and very little speed deviation averaging around 70mph. The calculated MPG displayed on the dash at the end of the trip was in excess of 38 mpg. I put the car in comfort mode which dumbs down the car's throttle response considerably. I'm not sure I believe the calculated mpg, but I can assure you my road trip was simply not real world. It was a 1 in 100 road trip. If you just plunked down $105k on a car, are you really going to drive it like your "grandma" I know I wouldn't.

    • @LearningFast
      @LearningFast Год назад +2

      @@craighermle7727 fuel efficiency totally depends on how the person drives it. Sure if you drive it hard it won’t get good fuel economy. Kyle’s tests are EXTREMELY controlled and repeatable. He does the tests this way so you can compare each car in similar situations.

    • @craighermle7727
      @craighermle7727 Год назад

      @@LearningFast I understand why and what Kyle did, but the average person owning a muscle car will not go out of their way to be as frugal as possible with the throttle. There used to be a group of what I believe was called "hypermilers" that would go to extremes to extend the miles per tank. I'm still waiting for the beta testers to finish their testing, and I'll make my decision then. II've owned BMWS for the most part for the past 30 years. The last one I purchased a 3 weeks ago is beginning to disappoint with build issues and obvious short cuts to reduce cost. Monitoring systems t are malfunctioning after 2000 miles. . I'm not convinced BMW, while presenting a car that finally shows functional elegance, isn't too far beyond beta testing.

    The motors are not induction motors. They are externaly excited motors, which adds some additional advantages and disadvantages compared to induction motors. The main disadvantage is that there needs to be a slip ring to apply power to the rotor. (hence externally excited, unlike induction where the rotor current is induced from the stator field. ) The main advantage is that the motor controller can control the rotor magnetic flux density directly by changing the rotor current.

If a company does the 2 test method, the EPA subtracts 30% from the result. Tesla does the full test to try to get the biggest numbers, while everyone else does 2 tests and subtracts 30% because it's more conservative

      Sadly, there is no room under the hood. It's all taken up by mechanical bits that other EVs found better places to tuck away. I hope BMW's Neue Klasse platform due in 2025 actually delivers on the promise of a dedicated EV platform.

    Did you take the high temp reduced air density into your range estimations? Not to mention that you are well above sea level to start with, so again reduced air density. How did State of Charge do with this vehicle at much closer to sea level? BMW can take credit for their conservative range estimations, give customers more.

    It would be interesting to see what the car would do on roads with little climb and at a speed of say 55 mph. Could it get over 400 miles? As much as I like the 70mph runs there are a ton of places in the USA where 55 means 55 and 60mph gets you a ticket and 65 or 70 might get you arrested for reckless driving.

    A dealer has a demo iX 50 and let me take it for a ride for almost the whole day. Absolutely love the car, one of the best car driven ever. Ride really good, smooth better than my G12 7 series. I was amazed by the iX. Was thinking of ordering the 50 or the M60. For fully loaded car price difference of the 50 and M60 is around 10k. So I am torn. lol
    Just wondering if the ride quality on the 50 and M60 any difference? I know BMW M tune the suspension on the M60.
    On the 50 the car was equip with the harman kardon sound system and it sound amazing. Do you think the bowels and wilkins has huge difference? and worth the extra cost $4000?
    I can't wait to drive the i7. Seriously BMW make the best electric car in term of ride quality, build quality and overall. drove Tesla, Lucid, Mercedes EQ and Audi Etron. BMW iX is the one.
    Thank for the review Kyle!

      In the US, they removed the Bowers and Wilkins sound system option in the m50; but I think it comes standard in the M60. Personally I'd save the $15k and get a decked out M50 with the blue microfiber seats. It's $25k cheaper than the base model X; so I don't know how anyone could justify buying the Tesla over this unless they absolutely must have 3 rows of seats or are a Tesla shareholder.

    Curiously the EPA ranges for the 2024 models differ from earlier years and do not depend on wheel size. Specifically the 2024 EPA ranges are 307 miles for the xDrive50 and 296 miles for the M60. So almost the same range, but still well below the 339 miles Kyle obtained in the 2023 M60. Interesting now would be a side by side range test with both 2024 models. How about it Kyle! :)

    I just upgraded from the xdrive50 to an m60 and I have to disagree about it not being a true "m" car. It's 250 extra ft/lb of torque, much better brakes, sport tuned air suspension and rear steering. If you turn traction off in sport mode you can easily break the back end loose around curves and it corners *far* more eargerly than a 6,000lb vehicle has any right to. The only torque-ier EVs I've driven were performance model Teslas and the handling in those isn't even playing the same game.

      Sorry, I think this max range thing is cool, but if you own a car/suv with that type of power, I sincerely doubt you'll drive it like Kyle consistently. Beyond that, if you can afford $105k for a car are you really going to give a damn about MPG, I just sold an x1 m35i that was a hoot to drive in a straight line, butI thought it had a lot of problems so I dumped it. I can assure you though that I consistently used as many of the 305 hp as I could and suffered the obvious consequences
