  • Barium Enema is a very commonly used tool to detect abnormalities of the bowel and the rectum.
    Barium enema is an OPD procedure in Which a contrast dye such as barium sulphate is administered into the colon via the rectal tube and X Ray's are taken to identify any obstruction or infection.
    Indications
    1) Bowel obstruction
    2) Abdominal pain
    3) Unexplained weight loss
    4) Colony cancer
    5) Inflammatory bowel disease
    6) Irritable bowel disease
    7) Colony tumors or polyps
    Contraindications
    1) Pregnancy
    2) Acute GI bleed
    3) Ulcerative colitis
    Types
    1) Single contrast barium studies
    2) Double contrast barium studies
    Single Contrast Barium Studies
    In single contrast barium studies the patient is administered barium enema and the bowel is completely filled with barium before taking the X ray.
    Double Contrast Barium studies
    In double contrast barium studies the bowel is filled with barium sulfate and than patient is asked to empty half the bowel. Air is injected I to the bowel next and than X ray are taken.
    Procedure
    Patient is kept on clear liquid diet before procedure. Patient is given a change of clothing and given a left lateral position and barium sulphate enema is administered by inserting a rectal tube. patient is than placed in various positions to visualize the intestine in different angles.
    Post procedure
    patient is allowed to go home after the procedure. Usually , patient will have the urge to pass the stool and with defecation the barium will also leave the body. Additional laxative maybe prescribed by the doctor if required. First few days patient may pass white stools due to the barium. patient is advised to drink lots of water as barium can cause constipation.
    Complications
    -Bowel perforation
    Hypertension
    Intestinal Obstruction
    arrhythmias
