Mary absolutely deserved to be kept in quarantine. She could’ve taken the royalties and have a cushy life, probably not even having to work since her story was so popular. Instead she decided to infect a maternity hospital and clearly never changed her hygiene routine. I personally think she should’ve been imprisoned.

She KNOWINGLY infected multiple house holds, whole families were killed by her infection and habit of not cleaning herself properly. Her running away from the homes right as the last members were passing wasn't her saving herself,it was her avoiding the investigation yet again. She was told multiple times. But she admitted, how else could she survive in the manor she was accustomed to on anything less than a cooks income.
Women didn't have many choices back then.
I don't care for her excuses neither do her victims.

I was lucky to have a teacher like that for my Christian history classes.

How could Mary claim she wasn't the cause when even after being told she continued to run away as soon as someone got ill. She must have had some idea even before being told.
I'm sure she didn't mean to harm anyone. It would make sense to think she wasn't the only immune person out there. I would have done the same thing if that thing meant I'd survive. If they really needed her to stop doing it, they should have payed her enough that she could stop working.
@@Caro2Late they effectively did, they gave her her own place, food, a safe job but it wasn't enough to just stop her, she needed to be kept away from people after proving she couldn't be trusted to wash her hands and take the needed steps to not infect others. If she didn't mean to hurt anyone why did she go back to work even after being told and shown the proof she was causing it. I find it hard to accept she didn't at least suspect she was causing people to get ill etc even before being told, the pattern of moving every time someone got sick, no matter how good the job just seems dodgy. She might have felt she had no choice but she could have taken a different job or at least been far more hygienic. Especially after it was explained how being clean and doing certain things would really help stop her spreading it.

@@Caro2Late oh I didn't think she did it just to be an a-hole just felt she had no choice but to keep working, didn't want to accept it even though she knew deep down. It's, amazing what we can justify and make OK in our minds when we feel like we've no choice, haven't done anything wrong but are being punished anyway. Especially when we don't fully understand what is happening. Knowing something but refusing to accept, believe it happens all the time, especially if we could starve, live a far less satisfying life, etc. After being told and seeing the trail of Dead I just can't accept she didn't know on some level she was responsible however in her mind it was her or them in a way. Also she obviously had a very poor understanding of hygiene and how it worked etc. She wasn't being a a-hole just a person in many ways unfortunately.
A little late to the party, but I wanted to chime in. I'm a child of the 80s, growing up with D&D. My father introduced it to me in the late 80s. They are fond memories, sitting around the kitchen table playing. It sparked that love of the Fantasy genre that has spanned my entire life. The Satanic Panic was very real at that time, but am glad that it wasn't something we had to worry about in my family.
Yup. My folks had encouraged us to read from an early age and so being a teenager in the eighties wasn't as bad for me as it was some of my friends.
I still like to read game books rather than fiction.
If you haven't read The Dragonlance Chronicles, I highly recommend it.

Loved this compilation! Typhoid Mary brought trouble on herself in the end. I can believe she initially was unaware she was the cause of the infections but, once ordered to refrain from working as a cook and doing so anyway, well, life-time quarantine it is, then. Thanks, also for covering the D&D panic. Always found it amazing that folks who raised their children with tales of and movies depicting the Craft - including golem [Pinocchio], fairies, pixies, spells, curses, charms, poisoning, transmogrification [Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan] and etc. would be worried about their older children carrying on with it.
During the time "Typhoid Mary" lived, disease and how they worked for not understood. She was uneducated and thought they were out of their minds. The science of disease was not understood and the population was not just ignorant, this knowledge was not common knowledge.

I think the authorities took the correct actions with Mary at the time when typhoid was such a problem. The woman clearly knew or sensed that she was related to all the people in the household of her former employers who fell sick, but chose to run. She was asked to improve her hygiene habits yet she wouldn’t listen. So what she did was reckless endangerment or even manslaughter.
What she did was in order to survive. If they had payed her enough to sustain a living without having to work... but they didn't. You can't just lock someone up because they don't get sick. What was she supposed to do without income? Die?

She was selfish, lazy and nasty-she wanted to prepare food for rich people after getting her bodily fluids on her hands and not washing them… and she wanted to be paid well to do it.
@@seaborgium919 They said ``under questioning she revealed she rarely washed her hands.'' ``Under questioning'' I would think means they pressed for details about how she completed the hand-washing process, and at that point, she probably admitted to just rinsing them with water. Because I saw a documentary where she was depicted as fervently proclaiming that she did ``wash'' her hands. So it was probably when they pointed out that it's not really washing if you don't use soap, that she realized.
@quickchris10 we need to explain that now a days. The amount of old ppl I see splashing their hands with water for .2 seconds and calling it good after using a public bathroom is horrifying. I used to love going to the local casino till I had to wait in line for the bathroom one day. . . 🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢

The motivations for the majority of posthumous marriages are heartfelt and quite beautiful really. Not Tansler, that's about obsession more than love. Allowing partners and children to benefit from the road not yet taken when the deceased was lost, instead of abandoning them to their fate, is very kind.
Marrying someone is deceased no matter what the circumstances is effed up. Get real. There is absolutely nothing beautiufl about it. It's just plain sick.
How on earth can marrying a dead body be legal? How do you know the dead person wants to be married, they can't give their consent!

It's more like if your fiance died before you could make it official sort of thing, you don't just pick a random dead person who never told you they wanted to marry you
Personally, I believe one condition Tarerre may have suffered from mega esophagus. Its a condition which seems to be more common in dogs, however it would explain the enlarged gullet while also being able to see the stomach through his mouth. From what i can recall currently, Mega Esophagus is what it sounds like, an enlarged esophagus accompanied by a weakened or absent esophageal sphincter, which acts as a valve between the esophagus and stomach.
He probably had prader-willi syndrome, combined with short bowel syndrome and trimethylaminuria. The prader willi syndrome caused high ghrelin secretion, driving his insatiable hunger. The short bowel syndrome caused malabsorbtion of nutriens, leaving his body in constant need for food. And due to the wast amounts of meat he consumed, containing high amounts of choline and carnitine being converter into trimethylamine, his liver would not have been able to produce enough FMO3-enzyme to oxidate all the trimethylamine into trimethylamine-oxide. The high amounts of remaining trimethylamine would be the cause of his foul body odor and cause even more damage to the mucus membranes of his intestines, causing even more malabsorbtion and horrible diarrhea. Due to him being born with these conditions, he would've cousine large amounts of food from an early age. The esophagus and stomach would've just grown to accomodate his eating habits.

@@juliestrickland7754 The part of the brain that regulates what you will or won't eat starts to relax when you're in a state of starvation. I'm assuming this was the reason behind the many more questionable things he had eaten. That part of the brain relaxing a bit is why many genuinely starving people will eat dogs and cats and even resort to cannibalism.

I'm 73 years old...whenever I got sick..my mom called me Typhoid Mary. I knew about her along time ago.
My dad did the same.
Both my parents did but that's because I had it. There was a thyphoid outbreak at the hospital I was in. I then became a carrier. I therefore had to be under quarantine. That lasted 2years.😂
There's days I'm surprised we survived the 80's. D&D has been shown to improve critical thinking skills (yes, it's needed, yes heretical ideas are great LOL)...math skills, social interaction skills, language skills...group dynamics...I've played for years, DM'd for...a couple (5e) and it's honestly the most social interaction I get every week. a group of friends getting together to be heroes. It's great. 10/10.

My ex mother-in-law took up para glinding, para stuff and bundgy jumping at 75 she loved it once she learned did it single handed (well not with 1 hand get my drift) till she was 90!! All for good charities. Only stopped when she broke her hip (hit by a car) then she went fell running (up and down hills) and mini marathons. The woman was fearless she died at 103! My daughter has taken right after her and does the same.. all totally true I swear. I know my spellings terrible

My cousins & I were between 11-14 when the D&D hysteria swept through. Unfortunately, all our mothers made us stop playing, just as we'd started.
Fortunately, sanity eventually prevailed, and some of us went on to play various PnP's.
I hadn't thought about that in years. Being a kid in the 80's was interesting.
