  • Hey guys! Welcome back to my channel. Today i'll be talking about how i'm feeling 2.5 years post-op from corrective jaw surgery. I did not think I would make another video about jaw surgery, but since I still get questions on how to prepare for the surgery I thought I would wrap this up with my tips for recovery. Plus, a few things that most people don't tell you before going into surgery. If you don't know I had corrective jaw surgery (for my underbite) over 2 years ago. This is a pretty common surgery that some of us get for medical reasons. I'm so thankful I was able to get this procedure done. I got double jaw surgery and genioplasty 5 days ago. It’s been going okay, there’s times when I want to give up but it’s not like I can undo it. The first day I was still in shock that I went through with it. It’s something I’ve been wanting since I was 14...and 10 years later, here I am. I am truly blessed but I also feel sad and anxious. I hope this is worth it.

M S You’ve survived the hardest part of recovery, I remember the first 2 or 3 days where definitely the worst so it’s only going to get better. Just remember to be patient. It’ll probably feel like it’s taking forever to heal but at some point your gonna wake up one day and realize that your jaw is way better than before the surgery. Just a warning though, your jaw muscles are really uncomfortable. I don’t know how much feeling you have right now but the more you have the worse your muscles will feel because you can actually feel them. Use heating pads and massage your face a few times a day. You’ll probably still have trouble opening your mouth really wide for a while but it’ll give you some relief from how sore the muscles are

Sebastian Weiner Sebastian Weiner thank you! It’s been getting better and I have been able to open my mouth a little (as I have 2 rubber bands). My pain is not too bad. I can’t talk for too long because I have a discomfort on my left side. I can drink from a cup, which is a huge deal. I’m still pretty anxious, I can’t really sleep at night, I had panic attacks all night. I’m not sure if it’s normal, I haven’t had panic attacks since high school. But besides that and not being able to eat a cheeseburger, it has gotten better :)

He started watching your RUclips channel & decided to go ahead with the surgery…
His surgery date is next month (Sept) & he’s actually going to the same surgeon you had!
Thank you for posting & creating these videos.
They have been so helpful. My son is an adult (in his 40’s) but I will always & forever be his mama & worried for him so I too am grateful for your video.
It’s given me some insight as to what he may have to go through.

I got double jaw surgery exactly 3 weeks ago. I have to say the recovery is harder than I thought. On the first day, I was shocked. Tubes in my nose and throat, a suction by my hand to get the blood out of my mouth. And I couldn't even go down off the bed to the washroom. After two nights in the hospital, I went home. For the first five days, I could only rinse my mouth with saltwater. Even though I only drank clear liquid from straws, which is not likely to have food stuck in between my teeth and cause cavity, the blood in my mouth made my breath really bad. I rinsed my mouth as much as I could, but my lower lip couldn't move well to hold the water in my mouth, so I always made a mess while rinsing. I woke up at least twice at night, and the first thing to do when I woke up was rinse my mouth with salt water. I experienced certain pain around my teeth even after taking painkillers. I lost nearly 10 pounds. Sometimes I felt I really want to give up because it was really depressing.
Now it's getting a little better, I can brush my teeth with an electric brush and do some gentle water floss. I can eat blended food, but I still have an open wound in my mouth which causes pain. I don't know when it will close. I used hot packs to comfort it, and do the jaw exercise and muscle massage as the doctor told me to do. I really hope I can feel better soon. I wanted a normal bite since I was a teenager, but I didn't know I need to pay this much to have it. I know it will be completely worth it in the future, but for now, I have to stay strong every minute.

I had 2 jaw surgeries and after both I did not have any pain. The swollen face, mainly the cheeks, was only really bothering me when I tried to sleep but after 5 days the swelling went away. It looked far worse than it actually was.
The worst part for me was having to eat through a straw for 5/6 weeks. Once you are albe to even slightly chew again you truly appreciate how great it is to be able to eat properly.
Off course the whole thing isn't very appealing but the result is beautiful, my self esteem has gone up by miles since then. Being constantly insecure about your jaw/chin/profile is far far worse than having to undergo surgery. Good luck to anyone out there. ❤

I have an underbite that doesn’t pose any issues other than cosmetic appearance because I can eat breathe and speak just fine. I’ve had the suggestion of jaw surgery floated towards me periodically but the recovery process, especially how you laid it out, sounds so daunting that having surgery done on my jaw doesn’t sound worth it for me to do unless I ever experience a legitimate health issue from it, which realistically probably wouldn’t come until I’m much older if it ever does.

It's no joke, I had upper jaw surgery, pre surgery braces sucked as i could barely chew while shaping my future tooth line. Post surgery was hell for 2-3 weeks of just consuming blended soups with added butter for calories. I fainted walking up the stairs to remove the wire harness fixing my teeth from malnutrition. Then rubber bands for up to 6 months barely being able to chew because they want your to keep your mouth shut as much as possible not to screw up your new tooth line. I was lucky not needing retainers afterwards which i was told some people needed for years after. I lost sensation in my upper jaw for 2 years, then it started coming back slowly and was able to feel every part of my upper jaw after 10-12 years.
It did screw up my nasal cavities to an extent and will often build up huge mucus deposits as a result that will come out as a massive snot blob like once a week or so.

You will feel discomfort due to changed appearance. I could not recognise myself for almost 2 months. I even had an anxiety attack and I would think that I had done a mistake by opting for a surgery. Hope you’re feeling even better now. Because you’ve had the surgery quite recent I thought I’d ask you some q’s if you don’t mind obv. I am due to have this surgery in about 1/2 months in the UK. I wanted to ask how long you had the braces on after the surgery and when they took the elastics out? Also how long did it take for the swelling/bruising to go down? Lastly, how long did it take for you to be able to open your mouth/eat normal food (obv nothing too tough)

    • @joyswanberg6145
      @joyswanberg6145 3 года назад +14

@@AkS-dj1xy Hi! So I am two months post-op and I still have my braces on. My orthodontist said it would likely be about 9 months before my braces are removed to ensure that my bone heals properly and so that they can fine-tune my smile. He said that this is because bone takes a really long time to fully heal, so while my stitch sites and incision wounds are fully healed (this convo was about 3 weeks post-surgery btw), they need more time in braces to make sure nothing moves in the healing process. For the elastics, my surgeon waited two weeks after surgery before taking off all but two bands (I still wear two bands currently). A week afterward he took off the plastic splint that was attached to my top teeth which held my bottom teeth in place when I bit down. Fair warning, when the bands come off it feels like your jaw weighs a thousand pounds. You probably won't be able to close your jaw completely for a minute or two. For this surgery, I haven't seen anyone else talk about having a splint on their teeth or even being banded shut for more than 10 days so I think my surgeon was extra cautious. I was pretty lucky in that I actually didn't swell very much and I didn't bruise at all so I'm not sure if I can speak for everyone. For me, the majority of my swelling was gone by week 3-4. I still am a little bit swollen but I think what is more noticeable is the strange way I talk due to my face still being fairly numb. I have heard that your "final face" really isn't completely there until 6 months to a year so patience is key. As far as food goes, I had to eat completely through a syringe for two weeks with the bands on, so pureed soups, smoothies that are thin enough to squeeze through a syringe, and protein drinks. After the bands are off I ate a lot of mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, bread pudding, rice, beans, anything that wasn't too hard on my teeth.
Sorry that this was so long, I just wanted to make sure you had all the info you wanted. It can be hard going into surgery not knowing what to expect. I know every surgeon does things slightly different but for reference, I had Dr, Odera at UCSF and he and his team were truly amazing. I would say that this surgery was very manageable, the pain is very low, its more strange sensations and numbness than pain. I would definitely say the surgery was worth it! I hope this was helpful and feel free to ask me any more questions if you have them!

If people are experiencing numbness in their lower jaw- the surgeons might have hit a nerve there. There’s a nerve right next to where they do lower jaw surgery- it’s rare for people to experience this in jaw surgery’s, but more common for people getting jaw surgery in their 40s. (I’m not an expert- it’s just what my surgeon told me at the consult)

    • @Portalain0
      @Portalain0 Год назад

Prior to me having double jaw surgery my surgeon told me that some degree of damage to that nerve (I can't remember the name but the one on the lower right) is pretty common during such surgeries, but that if damage is done to it feeling is more likely to spontaneously return if you have the surgery done when you're younger. In my case, despite being on the younger end, there seems to have been a small degree of permanent damage as I still have a muted pins and needles feeling when I touch the spot by that nerve (from just below the right side of my lower lip down to my chin). I don't really notice it anymore though to be honest. That said, how it's discussed may depend on the surgeon though as mine has more experience in emergency surgeries of that variety (mine was pre-planned but was a special circumstance) so he may have been prepping me for the worst case scenario as he's likely used to haha
That said, I agree that people should know that long lasting or permanent nerve damage there is fairly normal and isn't something to worry about!

I just got my double jaw surgery for my over-bite 2 weeks ago (28th Oct). On the 3rd day I got a bad reaction to one of the pain killers, and had to go to the emergency room at 3am because I was non-stop throwing up bile for 4 hours and I was in complete agony and pain (due to my throat burning from the stomach acids to the fact that I had to stretch my mouth wide to vomit 20+ times 3 days after surgery). This was because I didn't listen to my body when I was feeling sick before. It is very common to feel sick and to vomit, but make sure you listen to your body and know when something is wrong. Make sure you always stay in contact with your surgeon.
I've talked to many recovered people who also did the surgery, and said that the 3rd day is always the worst, but I can tell you after that day, it will all be great. :) good luck!

It might sound a like childish/superficial to say but I’m more worried about the process aesthetically than the surgery risks/recovery, mostly because I feel I’m a little “older” than the usual patients. My family couldn’t afford any of these treatments when I was growing up and now that I work and have some savings I have to make the choice.

@@TaxingIsThieving My orthodontist will put braces on me before the surgery, and for the recovery after the surgery, then switch again to invisalign to finish the treatment.
I think the length of your treatment will depend on how long your teeth take to align again and whether there's a wait list for surgery in the country you live in.
I live in Canada and even if your teeth are ready in less than a year surgery wait times are about a year. On the other hand, in other countries if your teeth are ready in less time, you can get the surgery right away because the wait times are much shorter.
Once your teeth and surgery are done, you can always get cosmetic procedures done like getting resins to fill the dents. I'm no dentist, I just have done a lot of research on this. Regardless, you can always discuss these concerns with your dentists. I thunk having cosmetic concerns is perfectly normal and reasonable.
It is all a very long process yes, but doing it now is better than later.
      Sending you good luck! :)

Please, think more then twice to get this surgery. I did it 8 years ago (was 20 yo) and I cannot tell you how much I regret it. Up today I still deal with the consequences which seems to be endless and the negative effects of the facial shape/outlook. Misalignment, musculoskeletal (?) pressure/strain in the the face. The journey typically begins with braces on, all wisdom teeth removal, molar teeth removal in the lower jaw, the surgery alone and finally the night retainers for rest of your life if you wanna keep your teeth aligned and dental arches in the same position. Your retainers will not fit anymore if you miss just a couple of nights. So you can happily start to consider to order another pair of retainers because you become dependent on it in order to maintain your new smile. The truth is that this surgery will cause a major trauma not only to your face/skull but the whole body. There’s something what calls muscle memory. So even you are after surgery your bite patter remains same due to the muscle memory. Despite I have this surgery my jaw has tendency to bite in the “incorrect” way (lower jaw first). Seems like the jaws are kinda striving to get back into the original position.
I feel myself as a rabbit to be put on experiments of the still poorly developed dental industry. Few years ago I had to undergo another jaw-surgery due to titanium plate breakage. (No physical hit, no accident or injury. Just it broke without any apparent reason. Btw I literally stopped any activity with has the potential danger to hit my face…yes your life quality will change for the worse, atleast for me). I feel like my face had been broken into pieces and “screwed” again like a lego. Another fact what comes along is that due to (so many) teeth removal (which is the support of your face, specifically the midface) your face will get narrower and sort of longer.

I had an underbite as well, mine was about a 1/2 inch out. I had my lower jaw pushed back and upper moved forward, same as you. I just hit my 10 year mark of having it done July 28th, 2021. It was definitely a life changing experience, however if I could go back I would.
My surgeon used titanium screws and brackets. Something I recently found out through tons of research, is that titanium isn’t ideal for this type of surgery. After several years patients started complaining of pain, and even facial numbness. They found that for some patients the titanium screws that have ‘fused’ to the bone are developing a fatty type of tissue inflammation. Unfortunately, there really isn’t much they can do after you’ve had the brackets in your jaw for a lengthy time due to the ‘fusing’ or bonding of the metal and bone. No one told me it was impossible to remove the screws and brackets, they did, however, tell me that it wouldn’t be beneficial and more than likely worsen the pain due to having to chisel through bone, and cut through scar tissues. The healing time would take much longer than the initial surgery. And in my research it said removal of the brackets may make pain worse. Just a heads up for any one who’s planning this surgery. Mine was 10 years ago, technology has changed. But knowing what I know now, I’d ask your surgeon what type of metal will be used. I never knew how important it would become.

After this I have my braces put on for two years and will have the jaw surgery to move my lower jaw back. I’m 16 atm and will be 17 in feb. I think my biggest worry is the period of time when I have my braces on, as the gap will increase between my jaws so my appearance will worsen. I had a sinus surgery/ rhinoplasty when I was 15. She. There was a problem during surgery with my intubation, and my jaw ended up being dislocated/sprained the tendons, and muscles. A year after that surgery, I developed TMJ! Really bad TMJ. I have never got it fixed! I was always to scared to go back under anesthesia, and afraid another mistake may happen during the surgery. I decided to live with it! I'm almost 36 years old now, and I have just had enough of the jaw pain, sleepless nights, trouble eating, and speaking! The massage therapy, and chiropractor, just to ease my pain is just way to expensive to do every week! So... I just had my doctor send a referral to the best oral and maxillofacial surgeon, in Seattle, at the University of Washington. Looks like I'm in for about a 2 year ordeal to correct my jaw. My face is going to look so different! I am not to worried about the looks though! I am terrified of the surgery itself, and the pain during recovery! I also can't really afford to not work for a long time, so... I pray I will be able to perform normal tasks within a month. We'll see though! Thanks for this video, helped me with my fears, by just knowing something about what to expect.

I just want to ad that alot of people have lots of pains right after sergery. I myself woke up in really bad pain, and every day following was painfull. The pressure in the face and the burning sensation if the skin which lastet for at least a month. Also walking around would hurt alot, again because of the presure. In the first week couldn't sleep for more than an hour at the time, sitting up because beding my face would hurt too much. I think 10 days of missory is normal, ofcause some goes free.. that said, I don't regreet it now, but I don't think I would ever do it again.

You correct that ultimately it takes 2 years. Bone remodeling is slow. The first round is at 6 months.

I was told it would take two years to see the complete healing process be done. I had it done in 1992, I was 16. I’m still numb in a few spots to this day but it’s way better than it was.
