My sister had this surgery and it was a very hard recovery but it completely changed her face. I remember our first thought when her swelling came down was how much more like sisters we looked. It’s amazing that surgeons can help people like this
That's awesome! Also genuine question, did it help with any mobility? At the end of the day, orthodontic surgery is first and foremost a medical procedure to help with quality of life and preserve the teeth so they line up correctly with each other (compared to cosmetic surgery where it serves no other purpose than looks). Would you say that the benefits that your sister has gained with the surgery medically speaking was worth the recovery? Thank you very much for taking the time to read and answer if ever!
My grandfather pioneered that jaw surgery in the 1930s! He had a patient with a lower jaw that jutted out so far, rainwater would catch in her mouth. I looked at the before and after photos and the young woman looked great afterwards.
Brilliant people like your grandfather have helped thousands to possibly millions in the future with this kind of surgery. Thank you for being proud of your heritage and their contributions to this world. Take care.
People like your grandfather have saved my life.. without this new jaw i would still be having lack of oxygen while sleeping & still have terrible mumbling speech.. but now i sleep better than before & talk way better. 😊
I laughed so hard about the rainwater thing even though I know you were 100% not kidding but it sounds like one of those rips when flowing on each other.
Modern medicine is so damn cool. Imagine what they'll be able to do in 20 years, or 50 years. It's wild to think about. All we need is to get more people access to care!
Been in Ortho for over 20 years and these are the cases I LIVE for!! Fortunately the vast majority of kiddos have relatively easy cases, but there’s a handful of kids that I recall over my career with night and day before and after photos that still bring me so much joy. Watching those kids come in, low self esteem, no confidence, feeling so low, then a couple of years later they’re grown up and soo proud of their own hard work in the after results. It just never gets old 🤍
I bet it was worth it though? I have a slight over bite and I’ve broken two teeth because of it. Not worth correcting, especially at my age, but she looked like she’d have jaw pain, tooth and upper mandible pain as well. Not to mention possibly headaches and neck pain/discomfort. Plus the obvious appearance issues, (although not horrible, it’s so much better now).
Hey, I am scheduled to go to a double jaw surgery, like the girl in the video. Could you explain your recovery process, what I should prepare for and maybe some tips?
@@nielslund5959 same me too in a few months there’s a chance of me getting it that’s the plan next month I’m goin in so they can check if my teeth n stuff are ready to get the surgery done
I had this surgery done about a year ago today. For me personally, the jaw pain wasn’t even the worst part. Neck pain and congestion were the real kickers. Still glad to have had it done! Wasn’t as severe of a case as this one, but still caused a noticeable cosmetic change
so i’m assuming that with your jaw wired shut, you can’t breathe much out of ur mouth. so when you were congested, how did you breath, or what was that like?
@@braydenlester2507 My jaw wasn’t completely wired shut. I was given tight bands not too different from the kind people wear during standard orthodontics. Before my surgery, my orthodontist attached special hooks to my braces which held these in place. I’m not 100% sure how the procedure works, but I believe I was intubated through my nose, which is where I think some of my congestion came from. This surgery really messes up your sinuses, and mine took a while to get back to normal. The best thing for me was standard allergy meds, essential oils, and hot showers. Nothing else really cleared me up. I was told I couldn’t blow my nose, so there wasn’t much else I could do. Numbness is another huge factor. I was lucky enough to have a very talented doctor, so I regained all my nerve endings within a year. Some aren’t as fortunate, and have patches on their face where they can’t feel anything at all.
As someone who had surgery to correct my overbight, it makes me happy that this person was able to get corrective surgery. Recovery is rough and felt like it would never stop hurting but it was worth it for me. Hopefully they feel better as well.
Just had double jaw surgery myself 2 weeks ago! I remember watching your videos. "Her life will be changed" is true. I hate people spreading the lie that appearance doesn't matter. People do judge.
Good for you. However, I somewhat disagree with your last statment. People do judge, but do you want a friend or partner that wouldnt be friends with you if you had a bad jaw? What im saying is, the people that judge dont matter. Anyways, it does look better, plus its probably a lot more comftorable. Or at least pre-op looked uncomftorable. I have no idea, i havent been thru any surgery like that. Makes me grateful tho, all i have is a big nose, an overbite, and buck teeth. Nothing too drastic. Sometimes when i think about my jaw tho the overbjte feels weird. I havent asked a proffesional about it tho. Sorry for the rant
I almost teared up seeing how happy she looks! Cosmetic (ish- I realize theres a functional element definitely in this case) surgeries are always a mixed bag for me. I want people to love themselves and what they are born with but certain scenarios there really is a drastic improvement in quality of life. Look at her just beaming! All the best to her! ❤
I had this same surgery for medical purposes, can confirm the functional improvements are well worth it, but given the brutal recovery I cannot imagine someone choosing to go through this purely for aesthetic reasons🤯
@@Cassie_28 I hope you are completely healed with the best outcome! Cause this sounds BRUTAL no kidding!! My tmj is flaring up just thinking about it lol.
@@mint_soup9743completely severing your upper and lower jaw and surviving is not something anyone should submit themselves to for cosmetic reasons. It was the scariest most horrifying sensation I have ever experienced. That being said lol, I did it for cosmetic reasons and I don't regret it at all. People should do it if they want but they shouldn't be pressured into it like I was from a young age. And most importantly you should know how serious it is, how many years it's going to take to feel normal, and you should know the risks of severe complications that are extremely traumatizing from personal experience.
@@mint_soup9743 thank you! I am completely healed and my only lasting ‘side effect’ is that I only have about 80% of the feeling back in my chin which doesn’t bother me at all it just means if I spill soup down my face someone has to tell me😂 the full recovery time is actually a year which I would say is accurate, you are basically learning to eat again which makes u feel like a toddler but in the end the functional improvement is worth it. Before the surgery I had maybe six teeth in total that made contact with each other, now I can bite and chew my food!
I had my upper jaw done when I was 16. That was in the '80s. It was a fairly new surgery and it changed my life. I wasn't as drastic as this girl by any means but no more TMJ no more headaches. The best thing was I was 16 and I lost like 35 lb and was over the summer. When I came back to school people didn't recognize me. It really was a confidence boost. The funniest thing is now I'm constantly evaluating people and I'm almost 60. I don't do it to their face, but every time I see someone that could use jaw surgery, I'm like oh you have no idea how it's going to change you. Even a slight change is amazing
A friend of mine had cosmetic procedures done and said the same thing! She would suddenly look at people and say things like; "if that person could add some filler on the bridge oftheir nose would look smoother. Just a tiny bit". She didn't mean anything by it. It was more of a "if you want, you can actually change things and I doesn't take much". I just see it as her being really happy with her results. 😊
imagine for the first time in your life being able to close your mouth comfortably. to eat normally. the first bite into a fresh, uncut apple has got to be the best thing in the world. corn on the cob, hard candies. okay maybe im projecting my own obsession with these foods but im so excited for her!!! i often take for granted the expensive braces i got that allow me to enjoy all those things today but im so happy she can too now!!
@emilyboyer9211 the comment is in slang terms, so in proper English it is 'she didn't do anything to you all', meaning that the girl in the video didn't do anything but the people in the comments are being mean to her anyways. Hope this helps :)
I also did this! They cut the bone from my chin and moved it forward, cut both jaws in half and widened them and they also moved my lower jaw forward. Recovery was 8/10 weeks without solid food and a lot of pain and blood loss. In the end the swelling, pain and weight loss were all worth it and would highly recommend doing this if you need it. Well worth the pain and discomfort! Edit: they also removed my wisdom teeth, which was amazing! I don’t know if this is common procedure, but it helped out a tonne.
@@Nimsy0001 Takes a while! Probably took me a good 10/12 weeks if I remember correctly. Theres still excess swelling thats needs to clear up, after the pain goes away. But most of the healing happens at home. I was not allowed to work for 4 weeks, and couldn’t attend college for that time as well.
Imagine walking around your adult life looking like someone kicked your jaw from the bakside of your head to finaly getting your jaw ajusted. Everything changes! I had most of this procedures at the dentist: palate expander, braces, a bunch of healthy teeth were pulled to move my jaw back which didn’t really correct my lower jaw problem at all. I think k I was about 10-13 when I had all this dental work. It sure did help tremendously with straightening my teeth however Im 30 now and still have all the major issues with my crossbite, overbite, assymetrical face. I still need to have double jaw surgery because my bite was never aligned properly and still have a crossbite, malocclusion overbite and asymmetry of my face. I also suffer from Tmj, migraines and some breathing issues. I wish my parents would have been better informed by insurance companies and know that there are options available and corrective jaw surgery often times is the best way to go about correcting these bone growth abnormalities.

@@ryannpalermo7819it’s easier as a young person but i’ve seen people in their middle age get it and recover well, though i believe it can be a rougher recovery since the bones may heal slower in older folks. i got my double jaw surgery done at 20 with more problems than some of those older people i’ve talked to lol
@ryannpalermo7819 For me, it was definitely worth it. I am still a teenager, so my parents paid for it, but I believe it cost around $2-3000 with insurance. Personally, getting the surgery meant that once I get my braces off, I'm done with all dental things for life, but also that I finally look like other kids my age, and am better as a singer. i want to add another suggestion. brown the butter on the stove and add some of the cocoa powder, as well as the sugar and vanilla like you said to it while hot and let it dissolve in the butter (blooming). will enhance the chocolate flavor and bring out some nuttiness from the browned butter. oh and let it cool before adding the other ingredients so you don’t accidentally cook it and get scrambled eggs

Take care.

It just never gets old 🤍
One of my friend's had this surgery and she said it changed the quality of her life. She seemed so much happier after and was almost unrecognizable!
It’s one of the toughest recoveries I’ve gone through
I bet it was worth it though? I have a slight over bite and I’ve broken two teeth because of it. Not worth correcting, especially at my age, but she looked like she’d have jaw pain, tooth and upper mandible pain as well. Not to mention possibly headaches and neck pain/discomfort. Plus the obvious appearance issues, (although not horrible, it’s so much better now).

My aunt had this but she told me that a medial pice was sticking out, did that happen to you to?
Any advice for me? Mines in 2 weeks!
@@Myka_Aria not sure what you’re referring to so I’d have to assume no
As someone who had surgery to correct my overbight, it makes me happy that this person was able to get corrective surgery. Recovery is rough and felt like it would never stop hurting but it was worth it for me. Hopefully they feel better as well.

@@Zombiefishman69 “people shouldn’t do this” > “i did it and don’t regret it”

I had double jaw surgery. When new doctors find out my medical history and find out I had it, they praise me. It is an absolute beast of a recovery.
Hello. And what is the name of such an operation, in which country was it performed and how much did it cost? thank you

Is it for medical reasons to get the surgery or just for looks?
@gingerlygirl8415
It's usually for medical reasons. People with severe under or overbite often suffer pain in their jaws due to malocclusion as well as some have TMJ symptoms. But, of course, if they're going to do such drastic surgery, they're also going to get the best looking outcome possible. Just like when I failed a peripheral vision test and had to have upper blepheroplasty to get rid of my sagging, droopy eyelids, the plastic surgeon made sure he made then look as good as possible. I'm not fussing - I hated them, lol! 😂

Fingers crossed for your sons sake

@@ryannpalermo7819 I wouldn’t really recommend it if it’s not affecting your quality of life. If your teeth are causing you trouble when you eat or speak, I’d recommend it. Otherwise, you can still do it, but it’ll be more of a cosmetics surgery, probably
Those factors were enough for it to be worth the cost and recovery for me, but it's ultimately up to you to decide if it's best for you. If you get it, I don't think you'll regret it. Best of luck with whatever you decide! ☺️
