- How to Make a Soothing Collage Painting
Analogous colors are the trick! This painting derives its soothing characteristic because the colors used are all sequential on the color wheel. Purple➡️Blue➡️Green
The harmony and compatibility of these colors creates no conflict, tension, exciting or stark contrast so that the overall effect is soothing and calm.

Ethereal, I know the person in mourning will find a lot of comfort living with this thoughtful piece.
I hope so, and thanks for the kind and lovely words, Debbie!
This collage process is astounding! Your course offering is beyond generous!! Your painting is so soothing and calming. Watching you paint and listening to you equally so. 🙏🏼💝
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate your kind words 😊
Marabeth has me wanting to get into my art room again without dread. Her class is wonderful and exactly what I needed. She is encouraging and has me believing "I can do this!" I was hesitant to sign up for her class because I have been a ceramic artist for many years. I was terrified of the word "paint" but have done many paper collages. I LOVE having this new way of working. It is also wonderful to have Marabeth pop into my inbox and say a few encouraging words to me and all of us. I truly believe she is always thinking about her students and always there to answer any questions. Please think about joining our group of artists and learn all about "Painting with Paper." It is simply wonderful!!!!
You are simply the SWEETEST. I’m SO happy you joined and you can be I will be using this beautiful testimonial 🥰. Thank you.

You're a promising artist! I'll wake up tomorrow , and turn my classic canvas to mixed media, with "roses"!
Haha, and thank you for the kind words.
I just discovered you and I love your voice. I am going to take a class soon. This art piece is beautiful. I love botanicals.
Thank you for the kind words-and I’ll be glad to see you in class!
2nd watch since being introduced to your art. Loved this since the 1st time and it has stayed on my mind to try. I am several layers in on my first. I felt really emotional this time due to a personal loss 1 yr ago. The very special touches in your painting gave me ideas for my own as I sit here looking from a distance. Lovely, meaningful share for me to save and watch as much as I want. Thank you so much. MO, USA
I’m so happy it resonated with you and that you are also enjoying the cathartic nature of the layering process. It has helped me process a lot of grief.
It's amazing
Thanks so much 😊

What a lovely piece its very ethereal and gorgeous wow! I'm just
looking at it and it is peaceful. Thank you very much for sharing your lovely talent with us how generous of you.
It’s totally my pleasure-I love to talk about process ❤️
Your videos are so informative and charming! You mention that in certain paintings you paint (or position) all your flowers facing forward but you didn’t say what your reason was. I like doing that in certain paintings and even though it’s abstract, I worry that it will come across as simplistic, even though that isn’t my intention. Thanks again.
I’m not sure exactly what I was making that comment on, but I’m guessing that I was saying that somewhere along the way, I began to want to paint flowers that looked a bit ‘incomplete’ and less uniform, much like you find flowers in nature. I should watch the video again and see 😆. There’s certainly not a right or wrong way, but I did have a shift in my work in the last couple years
Beautiful~!
Thank you! I really appreciate the kind comment!
Beautiful..!thanks.
My pleasure, and thank you for watching and commenting. 😊
You are channeling Monet MB ~ this composition/color combo is simultaneously uplifting & sublime …. Love the dimension, really special

Thank you so much for such kind words. I truly appreciate it ❤️
Loved, loved, loved watching your process and listening to your calm soothing voice. l can see how adding more and more layers really adds depth to the finished piece. Was especially delighted when at 27:42 on the video the way the piece was shown l could see a bird to the left of the white area. He's there and you don't have to look hard to see him. Beautiful painting, it has an ethereal quality about it.......thank you for sharing....
I love it when images just appear on their own! I will look for the bird. 😉. Thanks so much for watching, Diana.

Thank you Maria 🥰
I am so pleased to have found you!!! Hi from Down Under. It seems you have to say exactly what I need to hear at this stage of my my mixed media journey. It is almost as if you are speaking directly to me 😊. I look forward to exploring the rest of your videos. Thankyou so much for sharing.
You are so welcome and welcome aboard. I love hearing this 😊
I am looking forward to taking your collage course. Watching your work with paper to build this beautiful piece was inspiring. Many thanks❤
Thanks for the kind words! And I hope you do take the course-I think you’ll enjoy it 😊
This is just lovely. What did you use for your adhesive? It looks so wonderful to create texture.
Thank you so much! I use Golden Liquid Glazing Medium but there are many mediums you could use as well. I just like it because it will also thin my paint to have some transparency and I love the versatility of both.
🌬🎨 I love your channel. You're such a Amazing artist and inspiration to myself.
Thanks for sharing all your NOLAGE. 🌬🎨🧚♀️🦋
I’m so happy to hear you find it helpful, Michele! And it’s my pleasure because I love to talk about art process. 🥰

Really a lovely piece. I like your attention to detail even though it’s abstract…
Thank you Cheryl! I appreciate you kind words.
Merci pour votre partage généreux
My complete pleasure! And thanks for watching 😊
This is beautiful and wanting me to join your class. So inspirational.
Please do! I’d love to have you 😊
This piece is sooooo inspiring! Can’t stay out of the studio since watching your videos and taking your class. Have been trying to incorporate watercolor into mine being that is my media of choice but clearly, the acrylics work nicer and have more substantial base. So….. get to making more papers Denise, LOL!
Oh yay, Denise! I love to hear this. And I hope you keep working with the collage/watercolor combo because I’d love to see what you come up with!
Beautiful! Would love to learn your style of collage!
Hi Anna! Thanks for the kind words. 🥰 If you’d like to join me, I have an introductory class on this process here: marabethquinart.thinkific.com/courses/paint-with-paper
Beautiful! Are you using tissue paper to color? Simple tissue wrapping paper? Thanks!❤
Yes, it is simple tissue paper that I color myself. Totally fun. And thanks for watching 😊
This is just gorgeous - my favorite color palette and your process so soothing. I will take a look at your class. I get hung up at exactly the place you talked about - getting attached to the way it looks at a certain stage. And often when I get courageous and throw caution to the winds the results have been
pretty awful. 😳.
I totally relate! I think that’s why it’s always a risk when you’re willing to go as far as it takes-you have no guarantee that this time it will work out. I had to start trying to think of success in terms of the growth of my entire practice and not the individual painting; it’s hard but I think more accurate. Thanks for watching and hope you join me in the class!
@@marabethquinart That is a good way to look at it! So the class appears to be on video and we can do it at our own pace?
Yes, it’s all pre-recorded and once you purchase it, you have complete access to it for as long as you want. I have live Q&A sessions every few weeks as well. Let me know if I can help.
@@marabethquinart Thanks so much for your reply. I am thinking that I will treat myself to the class for my birthday at the end of the month. I will be a lively 81 - as the saying goes “If not now, when?” 😇
I say that to myself every day, Terry! And so happy you will join-I look forward to it!
👍👍👍💕💕💕🇩🇰
🥰🥰. Thanks for watching, I truly appreciate it.
Both so relaxing and inspiring watching this video. It gives me another "layer" to apply to the work I've been doing as a result of taking your wonderful class. Thank you!
I’m so glad to hear this, Heather! I find that each painting I do expands out in some small way to something new. I love it.
I'm interested in your videos
Gorgeous art and very inspiring instruction! Sincerely yours, A New Subscriber
Thank you Jerald! I’m happy to hear it. 😊
I love your choice of blues. I paint with watercolor and gouache. I am seriously thinking about trying acrylics. Any chance you can provide the name of the blues you used? I love the idea of the collage. Thanks for sharing this. It turned out beautiful!
Thank you for your kind words! And I believe the blues I used were Soho brand Cerulean, Amsterdam brand Steel Blue, Amsterdam brand Greenish Blue and Lukas brand Dark Payne
I can't recommend Marabeth's collage class enough to others. Very easy to follow and and you learn techniques that you can incorporate into all your art pieces. Can you share the specific colors that you used in this piece?
Thank you so much for such kind words! I believe the colors were cerulean blue, greenish blue, paynes gray, and blue violet
Would make beautiful wallpaper
I agree! Thank you 😊
I stumbled across this video by accident. What a great discovery. I want to try myself, but initially I would like to know the type of paper you use. Talk about tissue paper, tea bag, what about? Thank you in advance for your answer 🤝
I mostly use tissue paper and tint it with acrylic paint. I love it because of it’s transparency and delicacy. I also will use teabag paper which is thicker and more absorbent; it has some transparency but not quite as much. I have an introductory class where I go into depth on this; if you’re interested, here’s some info: www.marabethquinart.com/collage-class
Beautiful result. I always feel identified when you talk about getting attached to something, it happens to me too often and it is true, all of the process is affected when that happens. I have a doubt, how long lasting is the color of the tissue paper? If for example, your painting is next to a window? I´m always wondering about the durability of the supplies I use, (they´re not the most expensive). Thank you so much for your time and valuable experience🙏. Greetings from Mexico.
I often get attached too-I think it is a universal creative experience. And I color my own papers with diluted acrylic paint and finish it with a UV protected archival varnish so I think it’s as protected as can be. Those are very valid questions though. thanks for watching and commenting. 😊
@@marabethquinart thank you for your time💖
My pleasure!
Hi Ms. Quin! Thank you for this video and your generosity!
The mailchimp link you your favorite materials came up with a message saying that the page could not be found. Perhaps a letter or number of the link is a bit off???
Thank you!! I so appreciate you bringing that to my attention! Here’s the correct link: mailchi.mp/6658b8c5f33a/wjk8rdkxn3
Does the tissue paper need to be a certain kind? Acid free?
I’ve used acid free before but honestly, I use much more of the regular kind. I’m sure there’s a good argument for acid free, but in the end, we are working with paper which is going to break down somewhat over time no matter what.
what are you glueing the paper on with?
I use Golden Liquid Glazing Medium, but there are other mediums you can use. I use the glazing medium because I also can then thin out my paint with it to make glazes to go over the papers, so it’s just handy.
Poetry lines are not a copyright infringement and if you are worried write to the owners of the copyright and my experience is they tend to be very generous esp in a one off work
Yes, I’ve asked permission before, although I was turned down. In this case, they were lines from songs by the Beatles, so I’m not touching those. 😆 But I didn’t know you could actually use lines from a poem in a work that you were selling. I’m curious to know more.
@@marabethquinart If it is work which is in the public domain and no longer under copyright protection, you should be fine. LOVE your videos, btw.
Oh, I see-yes, I’m always looking for the public domain works for sure. Thanks for the clarification. 😊
Titles aren’t copyrighted either.
What type of paper are u coloring
That’s just regular tissue paper
Are these colorfast and archival?
I do my best-and I always make sure they have great quality archival varnish on them. Thanks for watching 😊
Is there a special type of tissue paper you use? 🎨💕
I gave a more extensive answer in your other question, but I wanted to add that I also use teabag paper, mulberry paper, rice paper. There are a number of materials that I experiment with and the list is always changing as I find new ones I like. 😊
Super grateful for you Marabeth. Thank You for inspiring. 🎨👍
My pleasure!
What blue do you use
I use Golden Liquid Glazing Medium-it’s acrylic and also thins out my paints to a glaze, so that works really nicely.
When you put finishing touches on your pieces with an Inktense pencil ~ aren't you afraid it will 'move' when you put on the varnish? ~xo~
Yes! So I usually spray quickly with a spray varnish and then use brushable varnish when it’s dry. But if I’m being daring, I will go straight to the brushable kind and make sure I only go over it once, but it is a risk.
@@marabethquinart Ohhh!! Good!! Good to know!! Thanks!! 😚
you’re welcome!
Glue
What the heck is Mulberry paper?
You should try it! a.co/d/fTuyC9u
I love this but I just can't get my head around why you would paint a lovely background and then completely cover it. I find it so hard to do that.
I know, right? It seems like a waste of time, but with most of my tissues, you can see the base through the tissue to some degree. And then there are those places that pieces of it show through, so really you’re painting the whole thing knowing that some of it will definitely be buried, some will be a support for what’s on top of it, and some will actually peek through. It’s actually all used and useful, but on the surface it doesn’t seem like it. Have you seen my video on doing paint-overs? You may find it illuminating (or at least interesting 😉) Why Paint-Overs Strengthen Your Art Practice
ruclips.net/video/-75b4TKN8Bs/видео.html
So gorgeous!! My question to you is when do you know the piece is finished? When to stop this amazing process
It’s really a subjective thing-I usually say to myself that it isn’t done until I can say “I love it!” I did a video on this: 3 Ways to Know Your Mixed Media Collage Painting is Done
ruclips.net/video/ibPJPqtQ-wQ/видео.html
I enjoy watching your process. You have a soothing voice. The music is annoying and unnecessary.
I agree the music is very monotonous and would be better without it.
I’m glad you enjoy it!
Your painting is beautiful and inspirational but I’m not a fan of the music.
I understand. Thanks for watching!
