12 Mixed Media Paintings in 30 Minutes!

- Who needs some creative playtime?? It's been a loooooong week with my husband out of town and three sick kids home all week and I needed some creative recess today! I taped twelve 4"x4" panels together in order to begin a faux 12' x 16" panel. After a few layers, I split the panels apart and finished each one separately. I had no plan. Nothing in mind. Just pure, improvised art making.
Consider this your friendly reminder that art making doesn't have to be an epic hassle. If I didn't have a couple hours to do all 12 panels, I could have chosen to do just one panel in about 15 minutes. There is always time to squeeze some creativity into life - you just need to find a few minutes and take action. You've got this!
Materials used:
Color shaper: • 12 Mixed Media Paintin...
4"x4" panels: www.dickblick.com/products/bl...
Acrylic paint: www.novacolorpaints.com
Homemade collage papers

My Goodness, Jackie!!!! These panels are gorgeous 😍! Normally, I focus entirely on the creative process and strategies you share-- much more than the finished pieces...BUT, this time I was fully drawn in by the beauty of the finished panels so much. You never disappoint with your vibrant color choices and thoughtful application of collage. Thanks for continuing to Inspire me!!!❤️
You are so welcome - thank you for your kind words! ❤️❤️❤️
Totally agree 😊❤️
@evalindstein3837 Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
Fantastic series! Your thought process is very cool and inspirational. Thank you for sharing!❤
Thank you - I appreciate it! ❤️❤️❤️
These are amazing! Great idea!
Facinating! I'm new to mixed media and loved watching this, you have a lovely voice that's easy to listen to.
Yay - Welcome! And thank you! So glad to have you watching ❤️❤️❤️
I knew there was a reason that I thrifted 4 decor panels with a "I'm sure I can use these as a canvas" kind-of attitude. I appreciate your commentary as t provides insight into an artitist's thought process. It is reassuring.
I’m so glad to hear it, Shannon! ❤️❤️❤️
Showing up to play is therapy for me. Being able to put my mind somewhere else is an important strategy. Thank you for the conversation this morning.
❤️❤️❤️
I just love it when you get going with the tiny box filled with tiny scraps. Always beautiful!💖🍀
Thank you so much! I do love my tiny box of scraps 😆😆😆
Just found you. Really enjoyed watching you work. Love the finished pieces. New subscriber 🤗🙏
Welcome aboard! Glad you dig my process More colorful creations coming soon! ✨
This looks amazing, it’s always a surprise how things look when you pull it apart 😍😍😍
Right?! I love how the whole perspective changes when the piece gets “cut up” into smaller pieces. ❤️❤️❤️
This was great! I love how it turned out and one can certainly experiment with different color palettes! The collage pieces were my favorite! Thank you for your time sharing your talent on RUclips.
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
You could leave the cutting each panel apart until after the whole sheet is finished, then grid the back side and cut accordingly.
Mind blown, Camille! That's genius! 🤩✨
Always fun to watch you work and 'play'! I agree, the old SNL idea of 'lowered expectations' takes the pressure off! Small projects are more fun anyway. 😂
Thank you! There is something wonderful about a project small enough to finish in one sitting, right? 🤗
You are helping mr
All for focus on playing.... and look at the beautiful outcome you had!! Thanks for sharing. Live Aloha 🤙
Yes, play play play! ❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely stunning - love the colour combos and the use of collage - quite inspiring!!
Thank you so much! I had so much fun making these! ❤️
Realy good Job!
Thanks! ❤️
Beautiful
Thank you!! ❤️
Love these! I have that exact set of panels on my studio desk right now. I've been trying to determine my approach. This gave me some great ideas and terrific motivation to get started! Thanks Jackie.
Haha - glad I’m in good company with the tiny panels! Perhaps this is your reminder (and permission slip, if needed) to use them? ❤️❤️❤️
I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE these!! Actually I love everything you create!!
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
Merci pour les bonnes idées
❤️❤️❤️
New here. enJOYed this, immensely. When u got to the collage steps, my mind would say, Yes! Then you’d move it away…lol such is the difference in expression. Nice work🎉
Ha! It is funny/wonderful how we all make different creative choices, isn't it? ❤️❤️❤️
Still beautiful job.
Thanks so much!
Masterful! Love watching and listening. My favorite is the center row, 2nd one from the left. It's nautical.
Thank you! ❤️
LOL, I can relate to some of your comments like "feels a lot more like me". Beautiful all of them.
❤️❤️❤️
These are beautifu. Alwsys so inspiring!!!!!!!!l.
U explained it perfectly when you talked about the feelings associated with paper and the board or canvas.
And you are also correct re: recording and noise. I ha a dog in the neighbourhood who waits as well along with my daughter
❤️❤️❤️
Love it when you work with small ones -- 12 times the fun & these are *gorgeous* -- haven't done this in a while but I will now ❤
Yay! ❤️❤️❤️
What a great idea on how to use these panels. I love how they came out.
Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank You for sharing your amazing art and process and love how relaxed you are and sense of humour.❤
Would love to see your process on a large canvas. Have a wonderful day.🥰
Thank you so much! ❤️ I have a few videos working on a larger scale that you might enjoy. I've linked them here:

I’m so glad! ❤️❤️❤️
These turned out so beautifully 💕
I just found your videos and inspired me so much to. Day. I do work on several panels at a time. Because I don't like wasting paint. But they all turn out differently. I've never done the small ones. great video I'll be watching all the time now
Hi Tami - welcome! So glad to have you watching! ❤️❤️❤️
Jackie, this one is so pretty, the colors you used are so wonderful. I love it.
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️

Love how this works.
Thanks Jackie! ❤️
NICEEEEE. I love the push on the next day. I decided to go to hobby lobby and get these panels.. 160.00 later. Thanks 😂
😂😂😂 I’d say it’s not my fault, but if I had been at hobby lobby with you, I would definitely be encouraging you to get it all, so…. You’re welcome? 🤣❤️

Thank you! ❤️
Absolutely Brilliant!
Thanks so much, Andy! ❤️
These came out amazing!!!
Thank you!! ❤️
As always I love it
❤️❤️🤗
Great collage technique. Loved watching you work!
Thank you so much! ❤️
Fun to watch! Loved them all!
Yay! Thanks so much! ❤️❤️❤️
Liked when the yellow was added.
Look was just rite. No more needed.
❤️
such a cool idea with the panels!
I admire people who are capable of doing abstracts in a way that it feels beautiful🌸I think yours are very beautiful
the 2nd from left in the nd row reminds of a harbour😍there are others too, which remind me of other things: stone, a beach, a person in the wind...
for me the primarely-colour combo with rose, blue/turquoise etc. with black (without the yellow) was my abs fave🥰
thank you for sharing! I really enjoy looking at your creations :) best wishes
Thanks so much - I love the imagery you see in these pieces! ❤️❤️❤️
Ive never worked on wooden panels but plan to try some day 😊. I think i will enjoy it.
It's worth a try!
Love this technique and this piece. 😊
Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
These turned out really nicely and look like a lot of fun!
Thank you - they really are fun to make! ❤️
Love, love this! Totally trying it! Always inspiring Jackie! 🎉
Yay! Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
The colors are beautiful and they are fantastic!!! I absolutely love your style of painting.
Thank you so much! ❤️
Lovely! Enjoyed watching your process! Thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome - glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
What a fun idea! Can't wait to try this. The panels were individually so much fun. I've seen people do this before with too much of a "the same" vibe. You've made a beautiful assemblage. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks so much! ❤️❤️❤️ Let me know how you like it after you’ve tried it!
The same vibe. OMG yes. It’s so easy to churn out a dozen almost the same, mediocre pieces. These came out fantastic.
Just found your channel...love these minis! Going to binge-watch more of your videos!
Yay! Welcome! Thank you! ❤️
Wow, I havent dabbled in grid journaling , but this looks awesome.Tfs🌺
Thanks so much! You should try it - it’s all of the fun of a big series of paintings with very little time commitment 🤗❤️
Beautiful art and has inspired me to try it. Thanks for sharing.
I’m so glad to hear it! ❤️❤️❤️
Love these! Wondering about the fun brush you use that I guess you made, it looks like it has two tips?
Thank you! It’s just a very poorly cared for brush taped to a stick. 😆 It does tend to have two points just because the bristles are bent strangely.
Marvelous 👍💕
Thank you! 🤗
I admire you.
❤️❤️❤️
I am not that much into abstract but really loved your works 👏👏👏. Great video
Thanks so much! ❤️❤️❤️
Just subscribed. Love your work!
Thank you and welcome! So glad to have you watching! ❤️
Fun one!
Thanks! ❤️
I purchased the panels but have been nervous about using them. Thanks for the video! I loved these. Going to jump in....sometime. 🙄
Yay! USE THEM!! I promise it’ll be more fun than looking at the blank ones in a stack - you e got this! 🤗❤️💪🏼
I love this color palette!
Can you please share what the wonky brush extension tool is called?
Thank you! ❤️ Haha - it's called I-taped-a-paint-brush-to-a-stick. 🤣
🤣🤣
I wasn’t on board with the under layers …but once the black hit it….just WOWZA! I’m a firm believer in home decorating a drop of black on every room pulls together the whole house with out being matching unmatched! I love your work/play and wish I could get out of the produce something I love and just play. I have a an all or nothing attitude. Thoughts to break that?
I do have some thoughts on how to soften an all-or-nothing attitude. But first a question for you: In general (not just related to art), do you find it easy to play and be loose/free or is that not something that comes naturally to you? I have been working on ideas for ways to add creative play into busy lives in small, easy ways (I’m putting it together as a freebie, so keep an eye out for it or send me an email - Jackie at jackieschomburg dot com - and I’ll send you a link to it when it’s ready). The more play you can incorporate into your life, the more play will flow into your art.
If, on the other hand, you are a very playful person and you just want every art session to result in a masterpiece - I’d suggest making a plan to create ugly art. See how ugly you can make it. Change your perspective from the beginning to train you brain to not worry about the outcome. It’s a mindset shift and it takes some practice, but see how it feels ❤️
@@jackieschomburgart watch your in box…
FYI - I haven’t received anything yet
I got your message this weekend (I somehow missed the first one but I found it after receiving your second one - thank you for resending) - I haven’t forgotten about you! It’s been total chaos over here this weekend. Will respond soon! ❤️
@@jackieschomburgart No rush! I totally understand how busy you must be with children, the channel, classes etc.
❤❤❤❤
Funny! I split my time between tennis and art. I guess I'm very "mental"🙂🙂 And also, yes, very lucky.
❤️❤️❤️
You are brilliant and I adore all your content! You always amaze me with the way you audition collage pieces and the speed with which you intuitively attack your work.
I'd like to try this technique but I'm not able to locate the panels. Where did you get them?
Oh that’s so nice to hear - thank you, Judy! ❤️❤️❤️
The panels are from Blick: www.dickblick.com/products/blick-project-panel-class-packs/
❤️
Thank you so much!
Love these! Can you tell us more about the brush you used for the black paint? I love how free and organic the paint went on the panels.
Thanks Carey! I taped an old brush with long-ish bristles to a branch and unintentionally abused the brush for a couple years by leaving it in my paint water for way too long 🫣 It has become my magic brush and an advertisement to treat a couple brushes horribly in the hopes of creating a new one 😆
What are you using for gluing? Ive just discovered you. Nice and natural presentation. 😻
Welcome ❤️ Thanks so much! I use Nova Color Paints’ gloss medium as my glue 🤗
Love your videos and how you explain your process! Was wondering if the Neocolor II crayons dry somewhat permanent once activated? I only have worked with the Neocolor I which are permanent. Thanks in advance!
Thank you Susan! The neocolor ll are still water soluble after they dry and will reactivate. I seal them with gloss medium (which can smear them a bit until you find a system you like) and then I can paint over them once the medium is dry 🤗
Thank you!!
Working on multiples feels overwhelming and I’m less likely to finish, or to recognize I’m finished(which is sometimes exciting when I look at it months later.)
Often, usually, I have more than one in progress, but I don’t work on them side by side. I have some that I don’t like, that don’t feel right, and I pull them off the wall and do stuff to them periodically. Some of them have been at this stage for years. I’m learning that if I hate it, it’s just an opportunity to play, what could go wrong? I already hate it.
EXACTLY! There’s so much freedom in the paintings that never quite did anything for us, isn’t there? I’ve made some of my favorite paintings by painting over unsuccessful ones. Nothing to lose 🙌🏻❤️🤗
Wonderful :) can you tell me what you were using to apply black on a stick? ❤
Thank you! It was just a paint brush I taped to a stick - it helps me have a bit less control over the marks I make using it 🤗
Can you tell me where to get the panels. I really don't know what they are, but I sure love the technique.
Yep, there's a link in the description of the video :) www.dickblick.com/products/blick-project-panel-class-packs/
Diese Collage ist wundervoll geworden. Aber ich musste mir die Wiedergabegeschwindigkeit auf ganz , ganz langsam stellen um den Werdegang und das Endergebnis bewundern zu können. Liebe Grüße aus Gemany.
❤️❤️❤️
Love the colors. The idea of using these instead of paper is a great idea for gifts. Do you ever use pieces of magazine papers? Do you know if it would be archival if you varnished it?I see some amazing colors and textures in magazines.
Hi Lisa - thank you! Yes, as long as you seal both sides in medium or varnish the papers will be fine. I love using magazines in my collages - you might enjoy these videos of a few of my magazine collages:

Hi Jackie, could you please tell me what you are using on the stick? Thank you :)
Hi - if it’s a paint brush on a stick, that’s my old (OLD!) raggedy brush that I taped to a stick 🤣 If that’s not it, could you please give me a timestamp and I’ll check it out :)
I apologize if you've already answered this question. But what do you do with these tiny panels? How do you present them?
I haven’t shown a set of tiny art in a gallery space yet, but i have sold individual small paintings (5” squares) at art fairs. Very affordable original art 🤗
PS did I miss what paint colors you used?
I usually name the colors as I paint, so you'd have to watch it again and listen for the colors. Sorry I don't have them written down anywhere.
What kind of tissue did you use to paint on for your collage paper?
Thank you, Donna!
I just use regular tissue paper 🤗
Where did you purchase your panels please
Hi! There’s a link in the video description ☺️ I got them at Blick: ruclips.net/user/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbFNSSXlOMDVzQ05nelpuaV9Ea2toVXFISjNwQXxBQ3Jtc0ttTUgyV2t3LTRGbDlZRVcyem81M1hpekNPU29ld2RlYnd0aEZGcTZlWXNsUDRPZGxfNXp4THJpYmdselpPSkRDUDFqZW9HZS1pQ25ORnlLVFE0ZnR2RFk0WkhWQndkaVhMMGZEb2haQWNnX2h3OTRkVQ&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dickblick.com%2Fproducts%2Fblick-project-panel-class-packs%2F&v=chHcj6BylJ8
@jackieschomburgart thank you I'm sorry I didn't see that. You must get so frustrated with questions you've already informed us about. 🙄 😁
@helendilley420 Nah, it’s no problem at all ❤️ Have a wonderful holiday season and happy 2024! ☺️
girl if you've been sick for that long you probably have covid lol
That’s what I thought too but have remained negative for covid. All three kids had walking pneumonia last week and I was treated for that, which helped my lungs a TON. Rounding the bend (I hope) but woke up with a lovely case of pink eye 🙄🙄🙄 My kids are germ collectors and bring them all home to me 😆😷😩
@@jackieschomburgart oh no!! so sorry to hear :( the at-home tests are no longer accurate for covid, but if you got tested by the doctor then hopefully that is accurate. hope the kiddos are okay. i remember reading there was a period where kids were getting the covid-pink eye combo since covid messes up the immune system and makes it so the body isnt as effective at fighting off other disease. i hope you all are resting up as much as possible!
So, so pretty! I look forward to Sunday mornings for these videos. Then I feel inspired to get to my painting and end up painting most of the day on Sunday! Thank you Jackie for these videos. You are my absolute favorite creator!
Thanks so much - what a wonderful thing to hear! Would you mind if I quote your comment for my website? ❤️❤️❤️
