- Looking to add a breath of fresh air into your creative process? It's time to shake things up! This video shows the start-to-finish process of how I created nine 5"x7" paintings that feel fresh and bold just because I began in a different place than I usually do. If you're in a similar spot, feel free to take this video as a reminder that you are the boss of you and you can switch things up at any time you choose.
The first 7 minutes of this video are a high-speed time lapse of my February 15, 2023 livestream (if you'd like to watch a slowed down, real time version of the first 7 minutes, you can see the livestream here: ruclips.net/user/liveF-zCsngc.... It was a ton of fun to play with the ruling pen and the early 90's/Saved By The Bell color palette, and I wasn't ready to put these paintings away after the livestream ended. I decided to continue on - adding collage, paint, and gelatos - in order to push these paintings forward.
Materials used: Ruling pen, acrylic paint, acrylic ink, gesso, collage, gelatos, and watercolor paper (300 gsm).

Gelatos are fun - I literally wore down a couple of finger tips when I first got mine a few yrs back as they are so great to smudge and finger blend👍🏼

These are so cool! I haven't used a ruling pen since technical drafting class in high school. It gives me nostalgia feels to see one again. And the 80s color are appropriate for that period of time too. 😂

Nice challenges you set for yourself. How is your palette setup- looks like something g wet in the tray and then a piece of wax or deli paper on top of that? Thx in advance for the answer!
Thanks! Yes, it’s wet paper towels with cooking parchment paper on top. Keeps the paints from drying out so fast ☺️

These are awesome! It's a direction I'm just now starting to go in myself. I feel there's a real _zen_ to recognizing the point when an abstract becomes representational or "looks like something" and then try to not walk into that trap, or at least postpone it. Is that an issue for you or do you just say "eh whatever, if it looks like a house, it's a house"?

That’s a great question - I don’t have a great answer as to whether I care if something in a painting looks representational because I think it depends on my mood on any given day 😂 I might leave the house-looking area (per your example) or change it to look less like a house, but I rarely lean in hard enough to add shutters or and a chimney, if that makes sense. ❤️

Ruling pens are basic calligraphy tools and are used regularly by calligraphy artists.
I am clearly not a calligrapher, so they are new to me 😆 So much fun!
