My mom decorated my new bedroom (this is the 60's) while I was spending a month in Michigan. She found a beautiful "splash print" bedspread which was an abstract floral design..with red, pink, bits of black, white, and I adored it!! My mom was a painter, and minimalist. She was way ahead of her time...at least in my little world, which was then called by some "Danish Modern"😂Mid century furniture from Denmark, and an eclectic mix of Goodwill finds. So that's where I'm at right now as a grandmother. I'm so addicted to your videos, Jackie and it's not just for the Art you make, which is amazing...it's what you have to say to us. I admire you and send you warm wishes. ❤❤P.S. My favorite colors are my Novas, and I love Pyrrole Red. I mix it w/Indian Yellow & it's so cool!! Sorry for all the mistakes, but I'm recovering from a stroke and after I get new lenses I'll be able to see what the hell I'm writing❤❤
Oh thank you so much for your kind words, Maureen! ❤️❤️❤️ I'm so glad to have you watching! I hope your new lenses come soon and that you are able to heal quickly and completely! ❤️
I love watching these lives in real time. As a new artist I realized that watching the speed up videos makes me paint in a rushed way at my own art table. Its awsome to see someone work in real time
I love all your videos and learn so much from your thought process. I've always worked in a more detailed style, botanical drawings, medical artist and illustration and am trying to loosen up my artwork. You are an immense inspiration and have had a profound effect on the work I am doing now. So thank you for your generously shared talent. Australia
New subscriber here. You had me with the first advice about pink! There are so many colors I love but not as art. Like you said, i like pink pops but not pink paintings. So i jave always worked the other direction and tried to add thr small pops of pink at the end. Which always feels like a sore thumb sticking out. It never accured to me to add the pink first and layer over it! I ferl pretty silly saying that now. I guess i got stuck on a process and it never accured to me to flip it on its head. So thanks for the aha moment!
Welcome! 🤗 So glad it helped shift your perspective! No need to feel silly, many things aren’t obvious until someone demonstrates it - happens to me all the time! ❤️❤️❤️
I'm sorry I missed your live session. I was watching through the first part, wondering which direction you were going, then you cut it into your sections, and then it went into a totally different direction. I always find it amazing how much pieces can change and take on a new look. Thank you for sharing your process. 😊
No worries - this live session was actually from last year! I actually just posted a video you might enjoy of another session like this where I cut the large paper into smaller pieces. If you're interested you can take a look at it here: ruclips.net/video/fqOQ2mAflAA/видео.htmlsi=3dttwAxs0CANL5Om ❤️
it was very helpful to put a clean sheet of paper down. the painted sheet of paper distracted from your compositions you were working on. i love this process.
An enjoyable revelation as always, Jackie ❤always loads of life encouragement in your art advice not to mention watching you create 16 little universes in an hour -- makes me wonder how long it will be before someone comes up with a program pitting artists against each other to see who can make the most/most interesting art in an hour -- you would win :)
Hi Jackie, I’m from Los Angeles I love the way u do art , I watch your process with awe…I think you are a very beautiful soul , very genuine…I m a beginner at an old age😊so, I’m struggling to be brave … I love oil painting…r u going to do some work with oils? And teach us about oil painting? Thank you❤
Thank you so much for your kind words ❤️❤️❤️ I think it’s brave to try new things at any age, so you’re already being brave ☺️ You don’t need to be brave at everything all at once - take your time and you’ll take more risks as you get more comfortable with the work that you’re doing. ❤️❤️❤️
I love watching this process. It’s like magic! It would help me a lot , though, if the background paper wasn’t so distracting, at least when you lay them all out at the end. Thank you so much for sharing your process and your thinking.
Hi Jackie , I'm a new subbie and new to mixed media. I am delighted I found you, and this tut is fab. I've created masterboards before ( and got carried away adding too much ), but this concept of using a limited palate , cutting, and then adding collage is super. Now, what's the next step ? Do you have a follow-up on how you use these ?? Would love to see your process. Thanks so much for sharing , I'm off to watch more !!!! Oh and I love your twig brush painter, super idea for abstract marks 👏👏. Must go into the garden later & see what I can find. 😅😅, thanks again 🤗
So glad to have you watching, Ann Marie! ❤️❤️❤️ I often end up mounting my favorites with mat board and offering them up for sale, unframed. It helps lower the prices and makes it more accessible to people who ordinarily wouldn’t be able to purchase original art ❤️ You can also cut it smaller and make it into artist trading cards or handmade cards for special collectors. 🤗
I usually share the tools I use in the descriptions of my videos - if there’s a specific tool you’re looking for that I didn’t call out, please let me know what the time stamp is and I’ll happily let you know ☺️
When you collaged the 3rd one- what did you use for adhesive? I thought the bottle said “gloss” thank you love. Love your video and discussion throughout!
I have watched a bunch of your videos lately, and I really gotta try that stick-mounted paintbrush trick. Do you go thru times, like I do, when you are just crazy for mark-making, and can't seem to stop yourself?... or maybe I have a "problem", like Compulsive Art Rendering Syndrome, better known as CARS (even tho I just made it up now -lol.)
Haha! I have definitely been guilty of having CARS! I find the best medicine is repetition. Just keep making as much art as possible. Quantity is (in my humble opinion) more important than quality when figuring things out. Just keep showing up! ❤️❤️❤️
I use all colors in my art, pops of this or that, sometimes monotone, some times overwhelming amounts of colors. I probably use brown paint the least amount of all the colors but it even finds its way into my pieces through packaging, pattern tissue and other collage papers. I really can't think of a color that I dislike or shy away from.
That’s great - you have maximum possibilities! ❤️ Brown’s probably my least used color also, but I do mix brownish colors as I go. Choosing color combinations is a fun part of the process! Do you generally use the same color palette as your base and then add pops of other colors as you go? Or do you choose a new palette for each project?
@@jackieschomburgart I rarely have a set pallet. I usually start with a collage element and go from there. I think this is why my colors vary so much. For instance I might start with a magazine image and find other collage elements that match colors from the magazine image, then add colors to enhance from there. I build my pieces intuitively so they turn out very different based on how I feel at the time.
Loved watching this! Is this one way of practicing or do you do this to get ideas for larger painting? Do you make your own collage paper, also? Thank you!
Hi Tina! Yes, I do make my own collage paper. I'll include a link to one of my collage paper videos below. You could certainly use this exercise to get ideas for larger work. Right now, I'm using it to workout my color palette for an upcoming series. The exercise is a tool to try many iterations of something quickly, so it can be used to try out just about anything you'd like to try!
Jackie, what kind of paper are you using? When painting on paper do you prime the paper with gesso? I feel like anytime I paint on any paper it gets so warped.
Hi Emily! I rarely use gesso. I’m not sure why, but I just like to paint on the paper directly. I believe this was some faux canvas paper from Blick - if I can remember the name, I’ll respond here, but I’m drawing a blank right now lol I really like using thick paper when I’m using big sheets. Thick watercolor paper is usually $$$ but I’ve found that mixed media paper takes water just fine and works really well for less $.
The paint palette you're using what does it consist of? I'm seeing a tray with a wet paper towel and then parchment paper then paint to keep it from drying out so fast?
I like these videos, but the speed of it is too much, it gives me a head ache and my eyes suffer from videos, I wanted to reduce the speed, and I tried to do, but I realized that I can only reduce the speed of voice but not the speed of hand/video, these video are too much fast.

Love your videos, great inspirations. NE Oregon
Thanks so much, Ivy! Thrilled to inspire you all the way in NE Oregon! ❤️
Very much like this video. Cutting the large painting into smaller sizes and adding collage made a dramatic difference.
The discoveries made after cutting it up are my favorite part! It’s so fun to have something new to react to 🤗
Thank you. I love love love those. You and your art are amazing

You are so welcome! Thanks for watching, Jane!
So cool your paint brush holder is 🩷
Right?! Gotta keep those brushes happy! 😆🖌️💖 Thanks for noticing!

I enjoyed the work, thanks❤ the outcome is beautiful ❤
Thank you! ❤️
Lovely. The colors are awesom.
Thanks so much, Britt! These are my happy colors 😊
I use pink all the time and orange together! I live near the Caribbean so the colors are perfect.
Orange and pink are such a great combination! 😍

Welcome to the channel! I’m so glad you’re finding the content helpful to your process! ❤️☺️
One day soon , i am going to be in a live course
Happy to have you join whenever you can! ❤️
Ahh! Rarely use pink, but might give it a try thanks for the idea of putting pink on first.
Try it! you can always paint over it if you don't like it :)

@Jackie Schomburg-Abstract Art & Creative Wellness have to learn to let loose!! Going to get a large page & giving this a go 😄🤩
I rarely do, but, I just tried some, thanks to your inspiration. I do use quite a bit of quinacradone magenta.
Quinacridone magenta is FUN! 🤩
Love watching. It would be amazing if you’d say what tools you use and why. Thanks!
I usually share the tools I use in the descriptions of my videos - if there’s a specific tool you’re looking for that I didn’t call out, please let me know what the time stamp is and I’ll happily let you know ☺️
Love seeing youur process, Jackie. Now what will you do with the finished pieces? Frame them? Mount them?
Thank you! ❤️ I’ll likely frame a handful, mat the rest, and put them in my online shop 🤗
When you collaged the 3rd one- what did you use for adhesive? I thought the bottle said “gloss” thank you love. Love your video and discussion throughout!
I use gloss medium - I just put it into the condiment bottle so it’s easier for me to use ☺️

Very cool! I bet it keeps you present in your art making too as you continually check in with what is on the paper/canvas.
Love doing this. What kind of glue are you using? Is it matte medium?
I usually use gloss medium, but occasionally will use a heavier gel medium for thicker collage paper/larger collage pieces. ☺️

Yep - you’re exactly right! You can use a cafeteria tray to hold it or I’m using an enameled metal pan. It’s basically a DIY stay wet palette 🎨
"Looking for the Perfect Scrap". I'm so guilty of this...lol
I think we all are! lol

Hi Lawrence! 👋🏻 Glad to have you watching! ❤️
What did you put the thin marks on with please?
Happy to let you know but I need a timestamp so I can tell you exactly what I used :)
Reminds me of Jane Davies.
That’s a lovely compliment - thank you! ❤️

Hi April! Thanks for watching the replay! ❤️
Maria. Rio de Janeiro- Brasil
Thanks so much for watching the replay, Maria!
is the pen a
is it a
'pip" pen or a :pit" pen?
It’s a Pitt pen ☺️
It was at 1:07:25
Hmm. 1:07:25 is the very last second of the video - I don’t see me add any marks in the last several seconds. Perhaps a screen shot?
I like these videos, but the speed of it is too much, it gives me a head ache and my eyes suffer from videos, I wanted to reduce the speed, and I tried to do, but I realized that I can only reduce the speed of voice but not the speed of hand/video, these video are too much fast.
