You are not alone! I, too, really enjoy watching other artists paint, even if it’s just backgrounds that might be covered later. Whenever I can’t play in my own studio, I “play” vicariously through others. ☺️ There’s no better way to discover new techniques, color combinations or tools than to just experiment with abandon!
Just an idea.... I use that tape you are pulling off as washi tape in collage! I just store it on some parchment paper and it's ready to use when I need it!
Please google if it is safe to have the alcohol substance in a spray bottle - I was told it was too toxic. And hope you have good ventilation. Enjoyed the video - thank you
Thanks for the exciting video I could feel your excitement. Would love te see how you compose a collage grid. And please give the name of the woman artist you mentioned in the video.
Hi @@coraannetoledo-merritt1220 - thank you very much! If you scroll through my videos, look for part 5 of the autumn color study - I did a grid collage on that one. The name of the artist I was referring to is Kellee Wynn at @colorcrushcreative . Also, @jackieschomburgart has been doing a lot with grid collage lately.
Jackie. Watching your painted paper fun. You just did the coral/pinky piece with brown ink and a little teal and water. As you moved it around I saw the hint of a face on the left and a bison on right. Love it!
Great eye, Nicole! I had to re-watch to see the piece you meant and when it came up I could see what you saw, clearly. I have since used several parts of that piece in different collage, but I'll dig it out and see if I still have that part. 🥰
Your 1st of Collage 2024 video led me to this one. It’s the second time I’ve watched and loved it just as much the 2nd time. Thx for another great one!
I just found your channel and I love how you approach your work! And I haven't even seen any of your finished pieces! I have recently been frustrated because the artists I've found are working so small and specifically (cards) that I don't feel a kindred spirit with them at all. You are different and besides your real love of paint and paper the size matters as well. Thanks!
Size does matter 😂 - but it's true, I love working large, but when I really want to challenge myself I work super small. I'm so grateful you're watching Anne 🥰
Jackie … you are a joy to watch! I love how you approach things and how you change the outcome in such a creative way!! The possibilities you encourage are unlimited … how fun!! By the way, so happy Archie is doing well … made my heart happy!! thank you …
Jackie, The images I saw are at about 32:02 on the video. Its just after you added the 3 blue dots sprayed & moved the drips around. As I look on the left side (to me) I see a spot creating a nose, a curve for a mouth below and a spot to the right for a nose. Then abovre all that where 1 of the ble spots has run is an upward swoosh making a horn. On the right (to me) between where the other 2 blue spots are is a light area forminf a foerhead, cheek & nose coming out of all that dark. Yes, I am always pointing out shapes in clouds. Hope you can see it. LucyLee
I've just found you and had the most amazing time watching your play session. You got me all enthusiastic to go in the studio on this wet, dull day and create something as uplifting as yours.🤞🤞🤞 Thank you.
This makes me so happy, and is the very reason I make these videos! I hope they do make creatives want to get their hands dirty and make something. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. 🥰
Hi Jackie,It is so exciting to watch you create! I feel so enthralled when I create . I catch my breath, my heart beats faster, and my stomach does flip flops! You are not afraid to feel and say so. Finally, finally, an artist who expresses how she feels when she works. Thank you for validating my own feelings, that it is okay to catch my breath when I see what I’ve laid down!
LOL Lorraine - I love that you get super-expressive, too! I really can't help myself 😀 When I first started filming my videos, I tried to edit those parts out, but then I thought that I would want to see that in a video (and also, it saved me hours of editing time by keeping the reactions in 😂). I'm at a stage in my life where I only want to do things that make me feel THAT good. I'm so glad you're here. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudiojust found this vid today. Very nice and reminds me of the painting exercise that I saw on line 8 years ago approx ( Danish Artist I think?) she used the tape idea and made six paintings in one go. I loved that you did Faux painting, I was the only woman in a class of Male painters and decorators to do a specialty Faux paint class with British Paints in Aus in the 90’s!!
I had to stop the replay of this about half way through when you mentioned grid collages. I'm not sure who you were referring to, but I am currently *obsessed* with Catalina Viejo's collage letters, I'm not sure if you've seen her work? Anyway, back to watching, this is a lot of fun, thank you!~
Michelle - thank you for watching, I really appreciate it. I am not familiar with Catalina Viejo, but you had me with the words "collage letters" - I'll have to check her out now 🥰
The Catalyst Wedge Show ... LOVE it! ♥ I don't know how I missed this video before - I am still discovering more of your videos, and really "get" your excitement over the colors that are happening. Jackie, I loved watching you playing and experimenting with paint color and techniques! I don't usually get lost in watching a video longer than 20 minutes. I hope you make lots more of these videos. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Kate! Abstract is so much more challenging than I think people give it credit for. When I focus on how the process of making it feels to me, I have more fun, and end up loving the piece. Keep plugging away my friend! 🥰
I love following your process and how you see possibilities everywhere. It would be fun to take a workshop from you. I want to see how you will use these papers in collage and which pieces you will choose to frame. I wondered if framed pieces work better with thicker paper, like watercolor paper? Thank you
Thank you Margaret - I'd love to have you in one of my workshops! I mad that video over a year ago and I'm still using some of the papers! To fram or not to frame is always the question. 🥰
Oh my goodness YES! I love all of this and I too love to create in this exact way. These papers would be awesome in a painted paper painting in Elizabeth St. Hilarie style. So awesome. Can hardly wait for the next video. Two thumbs up and a new subscriber😊 😊😊😊
Thank you for the description of skip troweling. I have some experience doing real Venetian plaster and it’s very labor-intensive. So I’m very curious to learn all about simulations. Question: about airbrush medium. Do you use it just for painting or were you airbrushing at some point? What specific uses does it have in painting? …Could you do a video on skip troweling
I just found your channel. ❤ I also love watching people paint. Thanks for sharing your process. I am just starting to explore collage with monoprint papers. I woukd love to see something on grid collage that you mentioned.
Watching other people paint is how I get my steps in each day - I watch while I'l on the treadmill 🥰 Thank you for watching, and I work on the grid collage video soon.
I'm watching this in the car on a 5 hour drive home. So interesting and fun, thankyou for making the time fly and I learnt a lot too. Will have to see when your live is on est time Australia!!
@17:42. 😃 Hah! That's funny as I'm Specifically painting some papers to MAKE book covers with them! I am of the brown paper bag bookcover generation as well. 😎 AND! I'd started painting just a few moments b4 I found this vid so I've been painting along with you! Never worked out that way before as I frequently watch YT while Creating. 😊
Just found your channel and I absolutely love it. I have painted in oils/acrylics/pastels for over 50 years, but have never tried anything like this. I'm definitely going to be experimenting. There seems to be so much freedom in this method, something I'm looking forward to after a lifetime of realism ! Thank you Jackie. Looking forward to your next video.
I just discovered your channel today, so have been binge watching. I am new to creating my own collage papers so really enjoyed watching you process . ❤
Hi Maureen! Yes, it's to create white space, and to create an instant frame when I cut up the sheet into individual backgrounds. Also - it almost always make everything look better 🥰
I really felt so excited about this video and can't wait to follow it again and paint alongside your approach. My trouble is once I have done a layered background I don't know where or what is the NEXT STEP please!! I sometimes love the backgrounds as they are!
Deb - this is awesome! If you love the background the way it is, leave it 😍 There is no requirement to do anything more. I have tons of "backgrounds" that I love too much to cover. There does not always have to be a next step, which should be freeing. Having said that, the more you experiment with backgrounds, the more you will learn about your style and interests. Some people will collage over the background, some will paint, and some will make a book out of them. My hope is that you will always begin and end where it feels good. Is this helpful? 🥰
I love your background painting !For me dei are a finished beautiful paintings I would like to have on my home The blues are fantastic Thank you for sharing 👏👏👏
You just showed up I my feed and I’m so happy it did! To add to other commenters, I can’t wait to rewatch this and work along with you. And also eager to see the ways in which you’re going to use these papers. Thanks for motivating me!
Thank you Jackie for a wonderful video. I really enjoyed it. You are such a nice person to spend time with on RUclips. I found this video inspirational. I did love your favourite piece. When you were painting the large A1 size painting I was surprised at how well it turned out when you removed the tape and chopped the pieces up. They looked fantastic and I really liked the idea of using the small viewfinder. Best wishes Deborah
Deborah, I am so happy you enjoyed that video and thank you for your very kind words. Creating on the large piece then cutting it up is a great way to train your brain to detect and utilize variations in the background. Each cut piece could produce and entirely different creative universe. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio Thank your reply Jackie. I am going to give this a try when I have finished with my textile work. I was thinking of using this technique on fabric. It could work wonderful in textile vessels and abstract works. Thank you so much for the inspiration 💗
Between seeing you and Kirsten (Quirky Queen Journals) use it, I finally got a Paint shaper. It arrived today. ❤ I'm thinking a catalyst wedge is next on my list.
Jackie, you are so awesome to share your fabulous talent with us!!! I have gained such confidence to just let loose and not worry about making mistakes 😆
What a lovely comment Vicki, thank you. You nailed it - just letting loose like this does build confidence in the creative process, and [spoiler alert] it can spill over into many areas of our lives 🥰
Hi Jackie! I'm a new subscriber to your channel, and I LOVE your work!! Thank you for these gorgeous sessions, I'm gathering up the courage to work in abstract painting ~ mostly I'm a photographer and wanting to do new things. I'm SO inspired by what you're making!!! 💖
Thank you Fiona, I appreciate your kind words and your subscription. If I may suggest something... start. Start easy, start fast before you're ready, and start badly. Allow yourself to not have perfect results (you will thank me for this 😂). It's exciting and scary to start a new creative outlet, but you were a beginner photographer at one point, right? Truly, painting papers is the easiest way to dip your toe into abstract art. Please let me know how it goes for you 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio Thank you Jackie!! That's just the encouragement I needed! The photographs I love to make are almost all abstract nature forms, so I'm hoping some of that inclination will translate into paint on paper. I'm going to order some paint tonight and hopefully get started some time amidst Thanksgiving week!! Many thanks to you and I'll keep you posted! 💗
Just found your channel, it was fun to watch for a bit. I don’t love really lengthy videos so I left after about 15 minutes. I did pick up your enthusiasm and I really appreciate how much excitement you have for what you do. I love to make hand painted papers too. I’ll be trying that Venetian plaster technique you mentioned. You gave me the idea to go through some of my old interior decorating and painting books to look for other ideas and ways to crossover into my art. Cheers!
Thank you for taking the time to comment, Susan. Everybody is different in how long they enjoy watching anything, but I appreciate that you watched however long it was. The Venetian plaster technique is awesome, and I hope you give it a whirl. Happy painting 🥰
OMGosh Kath, any day I'm feeling not-so-great about what I'm creating, I'm going to rely on you as my personal cheerleader 🤣📣 Thank you for always being so kind 🥰
Hi, April. Thanks for watching. I will be using some of these backgrounds soon, but I may wait years to use some because I love them so much 😂. Mostly, I collage and/or work on them, but I have used them inside of encaustic works, too. 💜
Hi Jackie :) This is my second background paper painting video where you mention that you go on to use them to create full paintings. I checked out your video list and don’t see any for that process. I’d be very interested in seeing the finished pieces. 💜
Hi EJ! Thank you for watching another video 😀. You will primarily find me painting papers on this channel because that is the focus. However, I have included some of my art works in videos, and hope to do more in the coming year. This is still a brand new channel and I'm trying to find a balance between what people want to see, what feels right, and what I have time for. Thank you for your encouragement. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio Well, Jackie, if your painted papers are any indication, your actual paintings will be beautifully inspirational and motivating. 😊
These painted backgrounds are gorgeous, Jackie! what kind of newsprint do you use? (Most that I’ve ever seen are grayish/brownish, whereas yours looks to be white.) Also, do you prime the watercolor paper with white gesso! many thanks for sharing. Great video,
Hi Susan! Thank you for asking - I actually can't remember if I gessoed this watercolor paper. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't - it's mostly random. However, when I'm working on a grid - like this one - I do usually gesso so that the tape comes off cleanly. As for the newsprint, it is just plain normal newsprint - it is grayish. I think the lighting in the studio made it look white. The exact paper I use should be listed in the supply section of the description. @@susanhale5058 🥰
It is really nice to hear your ‘oh wow’ and ‘ohhhh yeah’ reactions 😂 I’m happy to hear that other people too react that way about smudges of color 😂😂😂😂 😍
Thank you, Barbara. I stopped using music in the videos because a lot of people prefer not to have the distraction, and I agree. I love music in the studio, but not when watching (most) videos. I'm so happy you're here. 🥰
The clam shell tool! You are inviting and brilliant. It would be wonderful to hang out with you in person but your videos are next best thing. But if you are in South Fla let me know. 😊
Thank you, Laurie! I love it so much I still haven't used it 😂🤣😂. I swear, one day, I'm going to do an entire episode where I use all my favorites in one show. 🥰
I loved watching and listening your video. I'm interested in how you use these as backgrounds. What forms of art are you making with them? Please make more videos. This is exactly what I like doing but I get stuck knowing where to go next.
Hi Roberta, thank you for your kind words. I will absolutely make more videos like this, but will also make some showing what I do with the papers. Largely, they stay in beautiful, colorful stacks 😂, but my go to use for them is collage. PS - they also make fantastic grocery lists 😜
I know its late but really enjoyed watching you paint. I started doing some myself while watching. If its possible, could you pan the cam over the fine texture details? Cant see any of those. When you mentioned the Venetian plaster i purked up because i just bought some to experiment with. Thank you!!
Hi Robin! You are right, venetian plaster IS labor intensive, but boy is it worth it! As for the airbrush medium - I use it A LOT, in place of water. It thins out the weight of the acrylic without losing the integrity of the pigment. I don't know if you've seen this video, but Airbrush medium plays a central roll! ruclips.net/video/glfC7N31FMk/видео.html And finally, years ago I played with airbrushing for a minute, but didn't love it as much as other forms of painting.
Hi Suzi, there are some grid paintings coming up 😀. As for reigning in colors, sometimes I have to "trick" myself. I grab 3 colors + black & white and paint outside of my studio. By working someplace where it's not convenient to grab other colors, I'm able to focus on the colors I chose. Also, I love the challenges (and rewards) of sometimes sticking to a very limited palette. 🥰
Hi Jackie, I like seeing how you use your tools, and I'm anxious to see the Azo Gold video. I have a question about alternate uses for Matte Medium -- I bought a cheap brand of Matte Medium and it yellows the surface of canvas or paper when I've used it -- any suggestions about mixing it with another medium? Can I tint it with acrylic paint?
Thank you, and I'll get working on the Azo Gold video soon I promise. To answer your questions I need to put on my mad scientist cap 😀. If the medium is yellowing, you could try a drop or two of a purple (like dioxazine purple) mixed in to neutralize the yellow. Personally, I would start with a ridiculous ratio, like 20 parts matte medium to 1 part purple and glaze it over the surface. I suggesting painting some papers that you can test this on. If I run across a better answer, I'll share it here. Good luck and let me know if you find a solution.
Thank you very much, Drama! A grid collage is where you make a bunch of squares (or circles) on a single piece of paper and then create a mini-collage in each. I've linked two videos here the first is of a grid collage, the second is a grid color study. There is also a link in those videos to grab a copy of the grid template I use. I hope this helps 🥰 ruclips.net/video/D6AQ-rQlxXM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/xVY3qRyZoP8/видео.html
I thought I heard you say (the thinner papers to tear up for collage) were newsprint? They look pretty white not unleashed. Could you please share what kind of paper you are using again. Thank You. I love watching you play. ❤
Hi Yvette! Thank you for your kind words. Every paper used (except the large piece of watercolor paper) was newsprint. It may look “white” because of the lighting, but it is newsprint. 🥰
No, the only gessoed paper in this video was the large sheet of watercolor paper. It is rare when I gesso before a painted paper session - just personal preference. Thank you for being here, Marlene. 🥰

So cool Jackie! I’ve been used up all the paint on my pallet by doing just this technique!!!! ❤❤❤❤ it!!! No washing paint. Just great. Thank you.
Right?! It is so fun, and such a great way to use our materials. 🥰
Grid collage.... yes, please
You've got it Arie - coming soon 😀
At 41:48, and at other points, there’s a large bird (or penguin) head with a beak and eye. 🥰
LOL - I see it now 😂🥰
Just found your channel and I absolutely love it.
Awwwww thank you Lolly - it truly is so freeing! I hope you become as enamored with this style as I have 💜
I just discovered your channel today, so have been binge watching. I am new to creating my own collage papers so really enjoyed watching you process . ❤
Well welcome Dianne! I'm so glad you are here and love hearing that you enjoy the process. 🥰
I love watching you paint backrounds. I get as excited as you do. What is the importance od the tape? Is it to create whitespace?
This is my first time seeing one of your videos and I have really enjoyed it. ❤
Hi Lynn! I'm so happy you enjoyed it. I hope you'll have a chance to watch some of the others. 🥰
beautiful colours... looks really fun... I will give it a go and experiment 🙂
Yes, experiment - it's so fun! Thank you for watching 😀
I love your background painting !For me dei are a finished beautiful paintings I would like to have on my home The blues are fantastic Thank you for sharing 👏👏👏
Thank you very much Anabela - I love the blues too 🥰
I loved this video, the content and especially the length
Thank you Sue! I hope to do this style of video (Live Q&A) every other week - stay tuned 💜
You just showed up I my feed and I’m so happy it did! To add to other commenters, I can’t wait to rewatch this and work along with you. And also eager to see the ways in which you’re going to use these papers. Thanks for motivating me!
Thank you, Ann - I'm so happy you're here! I really do hope you will work along side me - it's much more fun than creating alone 🥰
Love it! I couldn't join the actual live but catching up later!
Hi Nathalie - no worries, I am going to do the LIVE Q&A's regularly - in fact there is one coming up this weekend. Stay tuned for the info 🥰
Best wishes
Deborah
Deborah, I am so happy you enjoyed that video and thank you for your very kind words. Creating on the large piece then cutting it up is a great way to train your brain to detect and utilize variations in the background. Each cut piece could produce and entirely different creative universe. 🥰

Thank your reply Jackie. I am going to give this a try when I have finished with my textile work. I was thinking of using this technique on fabric. It could work wonderful in textile vessels and abstract works.
Thank you so much for the inspiration 💗
Im late watching this amazing video. Im bowled over by yr amazing work plus its so obvious its yr passion as you give out a beautiful smile. ❤👍👍👍
That is very kind of you to say Andrea, thank you. 😊
So glad you came up on my phone. I eas a print maker and have tons of paper
Thank you, Miriam! 🥰
Love, love your tips on abstract
backgrounds. I have a catalyst and have not used mine.
You are very inspiring !!!
Thank you!!!
Thank you, Sharon! Now go break out that wedge and make something that makes you smile 🥰
Between seeing you and Kirsten (Quirky Queen Journals) use it, I finally got a Paint shaper. It arrived today. ❤ I'm thinking a catalyst wedge is next on my list.
I love it, Darcy! I call the two the "Dynamic Duo" of mixed media - they can do ANYTHING! Have so much fun with your new shaper. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio thanks 😊
I love everything! I love experimenting but this is new to me and I’m excited for this ❤
The experimenting is the thing that gets me most excited! 😀
I am so happy to have found your channel. Thank you for the wonderful videos.
You're welcome! Now get out there and start playing 🥰
Love your channel. I really like the idea of the back ground for creating this for a series. I can't wait to start this technic. How wonderful!!
Thank you for your kind words Jewel Family! Background painting is a really fun way to spend an afternoon 😀
I’ve watched a lot of your videos. Thank you for spreading your joy!
Thank you very much, Erica - it makes me so happy that the videos connect with you 🥰
I really want to know what you did with these backgrounds... I loved watching and your enthusiasm!
Hi Sara! Thank you for watching 😄 I've used the backgrounds in several videos - if you keep watching you'll stumble across them 🥰
I really enjoyed watching your process. Sorry I missed the live session though...it would have been fun to paint along with you. :)
No worries Grand Bay Granny - I'm hosting another Paint Paper with Me LIVE Q&A this coming Friday at 11 AM ET 😀 I sure hope you can make it!
@@PaintedPaperStudio Sigh...I have a luncheon that day - But I will watch the replay! Thanks for the heads up.
Another wonderful video. Especially learning to embrace your mistakes and just have fun ❤
Yes - I really do think that's the most important part 😀.
OMG SO awesome!!!!
OMGosh Kath, any day I'm feeling not-so-great about what I'm creating, I'm going to rely on you as my personal cheerleader 🤣📣 Thank you for always being so kind 🥰
I really enjoyed watching you do this. Gave me some ideas.
You've been busy today! Thank you very much for watching and letting me know how you feel. 🥰
I love watching g your creative process. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you very much, JKerr! 🥰
Luv your sharing of your play process! ❤️
Thank you very much!🥰
If these are backgrounds would you do a video finishing some of these? What would you put over these?
Hi, April. Thanks for watching. I will be using some of these backgrounds soon, but I may wait years to use some because I love them so much 😂. Mostly, I collage and/or work on them, but I have used them inside of encaustic works, too. 💜
Thank you! Love it! Amazing colors, tips and ideas!
Thank you very much, Fernanda! I am so happy you are here and that you enjoyed the video. 🥰
You are adorable! I discovered your chanel just today and I'm fan! Thank you so much for sharing this process! I love your enthusiasm 💙
Thank you - I'm sou glad you found your way here 🥰
Hi Jackie :)
This is my second background paper painting video where you mention that you go on to use them to create full paintings.
@@PaintedPaperStudio
Well, Jackie, if your painted papers are any indication, your actual paintings will be beautifully inspirational and motivating.
My husband always asks who I am talking to when in the studio 😂😂😂
you gotit girl
😍 Thank you! 🥰
inspring, and love that you don’t add music!
Thank you, Barbara. I stopped using music in the videos because a lot of people prefer not to have the distraction, and I agree. I love music in the studio, but not when watching (most) videos. I'm so happy you're here. 🥰
fabulous!
Thank you, Maureen! 🥰
The clam shell tool! You are inviting and brilliant. It would be wonderful to hang out with you in person but your videos are next best thing. But if you are in South Fla let me know. 😊
Thank you for the kind words Arie! I'm promise to let you know the next time I'm headed to FLA 🥰
I’d like to see a grid collage video
😊
So excited for this one!
Hope to see you there 😀
Looks like so much fun! Love how they look ❤
That sheet is gorgeous. That was great but I wanted to see what you were gong to do with it.
Thank you!!
Hi Cindy - it makes me so happy to know that you painted along with me. I'll try to be more aware of the camera work in the future. 🥰
Just Beautiful. Thank you for showing us how to do this 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you very much Madra 🥰
Thank you very much, Madra! 🥰
Oh! love that!!
Thank you, Allan! This was one of the must fun painting days of last year. 🥰
Thank you
I'd LOVE to see you do a grid painting. BTW, I sometimes have difficulty reigning my colours in. Any hints?
Hi Suzi, there are some grid paintings coming up 😀. As for reigning in colors, sometimes I have to "trick" myself. I grab 3 colors + black & white and paint outside of my studio. By working someplace where it's not convenient to grab other colors, I'm able to focus on the colors I chose. Also, I love the challenges (and rewards) of sometimes sticking to a very limited palette. 🥰
Really enjoying watching this video! What tape do you use?
Hi Sharon - thank you for being here! The tape is white artist's tape. This is the exact one I use amzn.to/3SwvIq7.
@@PaintedPaperStudio Thanks, very helpful...I will give it a go. You've inspired me to spend this very hot day just putting paint on paper!
I would love to see grid collage video!
Coming soon, I promise 😀
What is a grid collage?? I loved watching you play!
Whenever I put down tape, I seal it by putting medium gel on my finger and running it along the edge
Great tip! 🥰
@ and let it dry of course. Saves a lot of “cleaning up the line” later
Great! Can you show us this background with overpainting as a finished piece?
I have in several videos, and will do so again in the future. 🥰
Thx for some helpful tips. One question: we’re all the papers gessoed?
No, the only gessoed paper in this video was the large sheet of watercolor paper. It is rare when I gesso before a painted paper session - just personal preference. Thank you for being here, Marlene. 🥰
Loved this. Did you find the link to the person who provided some grid inspiration?
Yes, it's Kellee Wynn at @colorcrushcreative 😀
