Jackie Bernardi | Painted Paper Studio
США
Добавлен 24 мар 2023
Hi, I'm Jackie, and hand-painting paper for mixed media art is my favorite hobby. (I hope it becomes yours, too!)
Somedays, I paint with a specific purpose, but most days, I spend a little time in the studio exploring and creating intuitively. This puts me in a state of experimentation and wonder. My work excites me, and I hope it inspires you to try new things.
For many of us, painting paper was one of the first things we learned to do in school, and you know what? We were not expected to create "art." Somewhere along the way, many of us were made to feel less than great about our creativity, so we stopped, which is a shame.
I invite you back to a place of play and exploration through this channel. We are not painting for a tangible result but simply to feel good.
Having said that, I have five rules that I live by in my studio - and you should, too. 😀 If you want to know them, sign up for my mailing list below, and I'll send them to you.
I'm so happy you're here.

Hello, Patina Girl & Queen of Gorgeous Textures 😍👑! Thank you so much for the pan pastel sealing hack you've demonstrated ... so super helpful! And the textures you've created today are really outstanding! I've enjoyed the close-up camera work tremendously 🤩🤩! Aloha from Berlin ... slowly catching up ❤🧡💛💚💜
How cool! I've working with encaustic before and it is so very beautiful! But working with it DOES require adequate steps to protect your lungs. This is such a lovely result with the added benefit of not having to worry about compatibility with subsequent layers. And so simple too! I love that. Thanks for sharing and no worries about the technical difficulties. That you take the time to make these videos is such a gift to all of us. Thank you!
Hello my dear 🥰 you really know how to turn a technical issue into charme. The before and after is simply stunning. I love how subtle the colors have become and yet holding their glaze. Good job, Jackie. Really. Love from Britta who is a bit cold today in the first winter snowy rain in Bavaria ...brrr! 🥴
Thank you, Britta - you always have the nicest things to say. I have a lovely image in my head of you looking out the window to a snowy Bavaria 😍
Always love seeing your videos, and a live - Jackie is a great-Jackie!🍀💖
You´re so right! 🥳
@ thank you!!💕🍀
That made me giggle, Machteld! Thank you, always. 🥰
You're too sweet, Britta!
Really interesting thank you 😊
Thank you, Maggie!
Looking good technique… Thank you.
Thank you, Michelle! 🥰
Love the finish. Thanks sooo much! I have a question. Do you have to put anything over this to make it archival? Also,I have finished a painting and varnished it but would prefer this encaustic look. Could I put the gel medium over the varnis or should I sand it down first? Thanks.
Hi Susie, great questions. I will not be putting a top coat on this as it is just a study in my sketchbook. However, it is likely that I will do a final varnish coat on the "real" piece when it's finish. As for the varnish on your painting - if it was a water-based varnish your could lightly sand it down and then go over it with multiple thin layers of a matte varnish until you get the look you want. If it's a solvent-based varnish you might try the same thing, with a matte solvent varnish, but test it on something else first. I don't use solvent-based varnishes, so I can not speak from experience. Maybe someone else here can? 🥰
@ thanks for the advice. If you put a top coat on doesn’t it take away from the encaustic look?
This is so beautiful! The right side page especially is pulling me into a magic land. Question, would it be possible to use was crayons and acetone for an exhaustive look?
LucyLe - that is such an interesting question. I have no idea - I've never done that before, have you? Now I'm going to have to look this up 😂🥰
So happy I found you! You seem to touch on subjects I've been only thinking about.., and BAM there it is!
😍😍😍
Video turned out great. Thanks for sharing
Thank you very much - I appreciate it. 🥰
Hello Jackie, it was great to see you talk "in person"😅 well facing camera suits you well also gorgeous!! Thanks for another great painting tip! Speaking of tip...the" buyme a coffee" does not work ...404error...any other link i could use? Love from Paris 🗼👋🤗Do.
Hi, do you make your cold wax yourself or do you have an address to buy it ready made?
Hi Do - you are so very kind - I love little tips on techniques like this one because they are easy to do and bring a BIG change to the art. As for the link I just tested it and it seems to be working now (might have been a bug): buymeacoffee.com/paintedpaperstudio - I appreciate you, Lovely! 🥰
Hi Heleen! It is not cold wax - it is a soft body acrylic gel medium that I buy pre made. Someone else brought up cold wax for this technique, and I would be interested in learning how it works. Do you work with cold wax?
Your work processes are so amazing. Things I could never imagine. You encourage me to learn so much more and want to paint…. If I didn't have Covid. Thank you Jackie. ❤️
Oh no, Glenda - I'm sorry you have the bug! I may be biased, but the best way to get through it is watching art videos on RUclips and sipping on my magical "cold cure" - a lemon/lime seltzer mixed with cranberry juice - it make me feel better every time!
Very interesting to see the before and after , thanks! I hope we get to follow along on your creation of a 6 ft mixed media painting -- I would be fascinated because I've rarely worked on any size canvas.
I hope to film it in some way, but first I have to figure out where I can ever have enough space to do it 😂 I will keep everyone updated 😍
Great video. Wondering if you have used cold wax for an encaustic look. Perhaps it’s not thick enough. I use it with oil paint and also occasionally to finish an acrylic painting instead of varnish. It gives a nice soft glow and buffs up easily.
Sue - I have not tried this with cold wax, but it is an interesting idea. If you experiment with it, please let me know how it works out. 🥰
How does the Soft Gel Matte Medium differ from the Liquitex Acrylic Medium?
Hi Katja - it has more body (viscosity). I'm sure you could use any matte medium and get a similar effect, but it might take many more layers. I encourage you to experiment with what you have 🥰
Wow, that Southern Ocean Blue is magnificent and made my Saturday 💙💖💙! It's been dull and grey in Berlin for a couple of days and I could feel the "weight" of lacking sunshine on my spirit and soul. What an amazing colour! And those pan pastels were completely new to me. They are real fun tools with wonderful effects! Aloha from Berlin ❤🧡💛💚💜
Queen - I feel the "weight" of the weather. I grew up in a town that used to only get 32 days of sunshine a year! It's most likely why I've lived in Southern California for 31 years 😂. Yes, that Southern Ocean Blue is spectacular! 🥰
You can be so proud of your three beautiful collages, Jackie! I like them all 🤩! I'm trying to catch up with all your latest art studio sessions ... I'm terribly lagging behind ... but will do my best 🙂. Aloha from Berlin & a wonderful weekend to you ❤🧡💛💚💜
Thank you, Queen! The great news is that all the videos will be on RUclips for eternity - take your time 😂😍
Ty!!! “Hope you will be back” Oh yes I will! I am addicted to your videos ❤ Ty Have a great week
Awwwwww, thank you Kelly! 🥰
So Good So Good!!! I have always shuttered at the word encaustic..But this sounds super easy!!!! THe encaustic brings out the lights and darks and gives such an amazing quality! THe camera issue was no big deal! Thanks for doing this video..
Thank you for your kind words and encouragement, Sally. I hope you give this technique a try! 🥰
This is evolving so beautifully. I love the faux encaustic finish. It made a huge difference. Bob's your uncle! 🤩
Thank you Cindy - it's amazing the difference one product can make! 🥰
Hi Jackie, Really enjoyed your video on Practicing comp and layering. Curious to see what you finally did with the three pieces . Did you create a video/s showing your process to completion? Thanks, susan K
Hi Susan! Yes, this was video #1 of a 6-video series affectionately named "The Salsa Series" by one of the viewers 😍 Here is a link to a playlist with all 6 videos. 🥰 ruclips.net/p/PLgIXaAju7by2VcRb34YK-jy83l9X8Hmc4
This sketchbook page has developed into such a luscious, sumptuous background, Jackie! As always, thank you for your generosity in sharing all of your tips, tricks and techniques! I've never before heard the expression "And Bob's your Uncle" .......how FUNNY! Please explain the derivation of that phrase, I've gotta add it to my repertoire! Deanna xoxoxo
Thank you, Deanna! "Bob's your uncle" is one of my favorite phrases. I just grabbed this from wiki, "Bob's your uncle" is a phrase commonly used in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries that means "and there it is", or "and there you have it", or "it's done". Typically, someone says it to conclude a set of simple instructions or when a result is reached. The meaning is similar to that of the French expression "et voilà!". 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio Fascinating, Jackie! I love new catch phrases, can't wait for the perfect opportunity to say it!! xoxoxo
You are being too hard on yourself about the video, Jackie. This was perfect. 😁 I am so excited about this method of using gel medium to achieve an encaustic effect. (I want at some point to use oils with cold wax to see if I can achieve an encaustic effect using that method. I, too, am very worried about inhaling the fumes from encaustic. Although I have always loved the depth of that technique since when as a child my Italian grandmother painter showed me encaustic paintings and explained it. I was mesmerized!) I wonder if you think you can layer using painted effects or collage separated to build layers with the gel medium - or if that might cause problems with preserving the work. Wonderful lesson! I'm excited to see the next step! I'm still pausing from multi-tasking using this time each week to enjoy your lesson, but also help me focus in other ways in my life. You are inspirational in many ways! 👏
My gosh, Mary - what a beautiful memory you have of your grandmother her influence is still with you 💜 I don't see a reason why you couldn't build up layers of collage, etc. between layers of the medium. If you experiment with it, please let us know how it goes. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio - I will, Jackie!
Awesome!!! 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you, Angelita! 🥰
I love seeing you "live." This turned out great. I have a jar of this medium that has not seen the light of day--until today! Thanks.
Pull it out, Patricia, and have fun with it - it's been lonely 😍
I absolutely love encaustics. But because of the fumes I can’t. This was wonderful. I will use this technique offensive!! Love your videos, experimentation is key to creativity.
Thank you very much, Sue - it's just such a great way to add that special something to a piece, without the fumes!
I think all of your videos are great 😊
Thank you very much, SK - that means a lot especially after all that went wrong with this one. 🥰
Nice❣️👍😍
Thank you very much, Rozani! 🥰
You’re most welcome. 🙂
Thanks!
Thank you very much for your generosity, Debra - it means so much to me! 🥰
Fabulous video Jackie. Thank you 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you, Kari-bee! 🥰
Loving this process so much, and your commentary is always so clear. “Bob’s your uncle,” haven’t heard that in years, it made me giggle! (Yes, I would love to see a re-do of this technique!)
Thank you, Linnerlu - I'll put that video in the rotation for after the new year. 🥰
I thought last week’s was gorgeous but this is a whole new level. Love it!
Thank you very much, Donna! 🥰
It is so fun watching this piece evolve.
Thank you RevChristina!
What a steal, just saw this Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold 128oz container for only $1,097.27 on Amazon - Canadian !!! I don't understand why Golden would stop producing one of the colors we all drool about, makes no sense!
Unfortunately they had to - this is from their website: "The rumors are true - Quinacridone/Nickel Azo Gold (PY150, PO48) in all GOLDEN acrylic lines is being discontinued due to the unavailability of PO48." It's not Golden's fault, they are just a tiny player in the use of these pigments. From what I understand, the real culprit is (primarily) the auto industry.
I absolutely love your videos. I learn so much. You are an amazing teacher and I adore your creative energy and enthusiasm.
Beautiful
Thank you, Jo! 🥰
The Japanese technique for making prints with fish is gyotaku.
Where can I get stencils like what you’ve used?
Hi Marilyn - in this video they came from many different places. There are dirsect links to all of them in the description of the video. I hope you find the stencils you're looking for 🥰
This was really fun ! Thanks Jackie x
Oh, I hope you do it - it's kind of addicting! 🥰

Oh no!, opened up my plate and jumped right in with painting! Never washed it first! But I was so excited with the results I just went berserk! 😅 But surprisingly , I was using my heavy body acrylics anyways and didn’t have any issues!
Excellent B! I didn't wash mine the first time either, and like you, I didn't have any issues. The second plate was nothing but issues and ever since I just take the safe route from the start. I hope enjoy years and years of going berserk with your printing! 💜
@ thank you! 🙏 A dear friend of mine was very ill with cancer and we knew his death was imminent, I felt helpless yesterday and made prints from morning til after 9:30 as a diversion or I would have collapsed into a feeling of despair. He passed this morning. That gelli plate was a therapeutic tool for me. I’ve only had it less than a week. Looking forward to creative printing and collaging. Thank you so much. I love my prints!
@@b.comeau2597 I am so sorry for your loss, and I hope your heart heals soon. 🥰

Oh Non
😉
I love following your process and how you see possibilities everywhere. It would be fun to take a workshop from you. I want to see how you will use these papers in collage and which pieces you will choose to frame. I wondered if framed pieces work better with thicker paper, like watercolor paper? Thank you
Thank you Margaret - I'd love to have you in one of my workshops! I mad that video over a year ago and I'm still using some of the papers! To fram or not to frame is always the question. 🥰
What are you using for paper? It looks really lightweight.
In that video I used newsprint and watercolor paper. 🥰
Hi Jacki - thank you so much for this fantastic series (and all your vids which are so inspirational). A quick question- do you use the crepe or smooth exam paper and will it matter? When I followed your link to this product in AMZ there are the two options. Thank you! Can't wait to try!
Hi Maria! I use the crepe-style medical exam paper - it does matter a little. The smooth paper will get very translucent, but not exactly transparent. I hope you enjoy using it as much as I do! 🥰
Into the Deep Blue. Reminds me of deep dark ocean on that first video.
Yes, like a deep trench in the middle of the ocean. 😍
OMG! I am a patina/copper girl!!! that MADE the piece . . . gotta get some of that! oh Geeeeez! I would frame that as is! love it
The metals make be crazy 😍 I'm so glad you liked it!
Hey Jackie, I'm quite enjoying this series of work so far. I have an unrelated question...I'm trying to find who it was that said they could mix green/gold and I think it might have been you 🤔 If it was, can you please tell me 😢❤ or let me know where to find it Thank you 😊
Hi Susan! I could have been me because I do mix green and gold, but can you give me a little more context? Did I mix the two colors and use it? Or do you remember the two colors being mixed and being surprised by the results? It might help me narrow down which video it was in (if it was me). 🥰
@PaintedPaperStudio You didn't actually mix it. You were using it and bemoaning the fact that it was being discontinued but said not to worry because you knew how to mix it yourself. I believe you mentioned putting it in a video but I don't think you had yet to do so 🤔...or, I could be wrong and you might have and I simply don't remember 😉 Anyway, if you're willing to share it would be great 😜 Thanks
@@susanmarcoux7005 Got it - it was actually Golden's Quinacridone Nickle Azo Gold, and the video on how to make it yourself is here ruclips.net/video/uoLR2hXi9Kc/видео.html - I'm so glad we figured this out. 🥰
@PaintedPaperStudio thank you...looking forward to your next video
