Oh yes, one more faux encaustic video would be so amazing, dear Jackie! And don't worry about technical problems. Those things happen, but they don't take anything away from your great artistic skills and instructions 🤩. Aloha from Berlin & a happy upcoming weekend to you ❤🧡💛💚💜
This sketchbook page has developed into such a luscious, sumptuous background, Jackie! As always, thank you for your generosity in sharing all of your tips, tricks and techniques! I've never before heard the expression "And Bob's your Uncle" .......how FUNNY! Please explain the derivation of that phrase, I've gotta add it to my repertoire! Deanna xoxoxo
Thank you, Deanna! "Bob's your uncle" is one of my favorite phrases. I just grabbed this from wiki, "Bob's your uncle" is a phrase commonly used in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries that means "and there it is", or "and there you have it", or "it's done". Typically, someone says it to conclude a set of simple instructions or when a result is reached. The meaning is similar to that of the French expression "et voilà!". 🥰
The development of this project is an excellent teaching tool!!! what a great video and I can't wait to see the outcome... The "encaustic" layer makes the development of the piece exceptional. Can't wait to explore this on my next canvas...
Great video. Wondering if you have used cold wax for an encaustic look. Perhaps it’s not thick enough. I use it with oil paint and also occasionally to finish an acrylic painting instead of varnish. It gives a nice soft glow and buffs up easily.
How cool! I've working with encaustic before and it is so very beautiful! But working with it DOES require adequate steps to protect your lungs. This is such a lovely result with the added benefit of not having to worry about compatibility with subsequent layers. And so simple too! I love that. Thanks for sharing and no worries about the technical difficulties. That you take the time to make these videos is such a gift to all of us. Thank you!
I think your big piece is going to be amazing! I enjoy learning all you do. Thank you for explaining in details. Just want to make a comment on your hair ..How beautiful to see ..I can't wait for your next video! I am not a real artist yet but watching your creative process want me to get into it!
Thank you for all the kind words, Linda. With all the other 'disasters' that happened that day, my frizzy hair didn't even bother me, and I am vain about my hair! 😂 Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. 🥰
Very interesting to see the before and after , thanks! I hope we get to follow along on your creation of a 6 ft mixed media painting -- I would be fascinated because I've rarely worked on any size canvas.
So Good So Good!!! I have always shuttered at the word encaustic..But this sounds super easy!!!! THe encaustic brings out the lights and darks and gives such an amazing quality! THe camera issue was no big deal! Thanks for doing this video..
Hello my dear 🥰 you really know how to turn a technical issue into charme. The before and after is simply stunning. I love how subtle the colors have become and yet holding their glaze. Good job, Jackie. Really. Love from Britta who is a bit cold today in the first winter snowy rain in Bavaria ...brrr! 🥴
You are being too hard on yourself about the video, Jackie. This was perfect. 😁 I am so excited about this method of using gel medium to achieve an encaustic effect. (I want at some point to use oils with cold wax to see if I can achieve an encaustic effect using that method. I, too, am very worried about inhaling the fumes from encaustic. Although I have always loved the depth of that technique since when as a child my Italian grandmother painter showed me encaustic paintings and explained it. I was mesmerized!) I wonder if you think you can layer using painted effects or collage separated to build layers with the gel medium - or if that might cause problems with preserving the work. Wonderful lesson! I'm excited to see the next step! I'm still pausing from multi-tasking using this time each week to enjoy your lesson, but also help me focus in other ways in my life. You are inspirational in many ways! 👏
My gosh, Mary - what a beautiful memory you have of your grandmother her influence is still with you 💜 I don't see a reason why you couldn't build up layers of collage, etc. between layers of the medium. If you experiment with it, please let us know how it goes. 🥰
Yes! Very nice effect, endless possibilities right? Sounds like your big project might be a commission? Working my way as well towards a very large one in future, having fun with you, keep it up!
I absolutely love encaustics. But because of the fumes I can’t. This was wonderful. I will use this technique offensive!! Love your videos, experimentation is key to creativity.
Loving this process so much, and your commentary is always so clear. “Bob’s your uncle,” haven’t heard that in years, it made me giggle! (Yes, I would love to see a re-do of this technique!)
Hello Jackie, it was great to see you talk "in person"😅 well facing camera suits you well also gorgeous!! Thanks for another great painting tip! Speaking of tip...the" buyme a coffee" does not work ...404error...any other link i could use? Love from Paris 🗼👋🤗Do.
Hi Do - you are so very kind - I love little tips on techniques like this one because they are easy to do and bring a BIG change to the art. As for the link I just tested it and it seems to be working now (might have been a bug): buymeacoffee.com/paintedpaperstudio - I appreciate you, Lovely! 🥰
Hi Heleen! It is not cold wax - it is a soft body acrylic gel medium that I buy pre made. Someone else brought up cold wax for this technique, and I would be interested in learning how it works. Do you work with cold wax?
I have heard the term encaustic without really exploring what it means and why you would do it. I am familiar with the matt gel medium and have used it to "seal" some bits n pieces and for collaging! So I have faux encausted without realising! 😂 I am off to research ... thanks for this! 🖤🤍💙
Love it Jackie 😍. The soft misty effect is beautiful and will be adding the soft gel matte medium to my wish list. Will this make the pages stick? I have recently done some collage in my journal to cover a disaster 🤪 and the pages are sticking after using liquitex liquid matte medium. Is this normal? It’s lovely to hear you use the phrase ‘Bob’s your uncle’. A slight variation we also use here in the UK is, ‘Bob’s ya live-in lover’. Both are great little phrases 😊. Look forward to the next stage of your beautiful journal layout 🙏🏻😍🙏🏻😘
LOL Andrea, I don't think I'll be saying "Bob's ya live-in lover" on screen - but you know I'll be thinking it now. 🤣😂🤣 Thank you for asking about the pages sticking - I'm going to answer that in this week's video! Stay tuned! 🥰
This is so beautiful! The right side page especially is pulling me into a magic land. Question, would it be possible to use was crayons and acetone for an exhaustive look?
I had great success with faux encaustic effect using transparent gesso, but my last attempt with matte gel medium was a bust 🙁 The gel stayed milky opaque even when it dried, and my background is barely visible. I was so disappointed because theres a few pieces of ephemera in the background that I don't have another copy of. I tried sanding it down, but it didn't bring it back. The opacity probably depends on the brand since you used about the same thick layer as I did. (We don't have Golden in my EU country.)
Oh Nela, I am so sorry to hear that this happened with the medium you used. It's a good reminder for all of us to test products the way we intend to use them before we use them. I've have very similar things happen in the past and it is so disappointing. Having said that, THANK YOU for the clear gesso tip - I had never thought of using clear gesso this way! 🥰
@PaintedPaperStudio Agreed, test projects are super important to avoid unpleasant surprises. I tried gesso instead of matte medium because my first jar arrived broken, so I wanted to use it up quickly before it dried. It turned out great!
Hi Nic - it actually isn't a "sketchbook" at all it a cookbook that I turned into a sketchbook and I L.O.V.E it! Here is a link to the first video I did using this cookbook sketchbook. 🥰 ruclips.net/video/ff2kRv4teAI/видео.html
Love the finish. Thanks sooo much! I have a question. Do you have to put anything over this to make it archival? Also,I have finished a painting and varnished it but would prefer this encaustic look. Could I put the gel medium over the varnis or should I sand it down first? Thanks.
Hi Susie, great questions. I will not be putting a top coat on this as it is just a study in my sketchbook. However, it is likely that I will do a final varnish coat on the "real" piece when it's finish. As for the varnish on your painting - if it was a water-based varnish your could lightly sand it down and then go over it with multiple thin layers of a matte varnish until you get the look you want. If it's a solvent-based varnish you might try the same thing, with a matte solvent varnish, but test it on something else first. I don't use solvent-based varnishes, so I can not speak from experience. Maybe someone else here can? 🥰
Hey Jackie - question from a newbie...I am beginning to sell some gel plate monotypes. However some of my pieces are multi-layers of paint imagery on the paper and I'm wondering if that too is technically called a monotype. I appreciate your experience and so much knowledge!! Thank you so much.
Hi Marney! Great question, and to be honest, I had to do a little research. I believe it would technically be a monoprint. Kim Herringe has a terrific article on the difference here. kimherringe.com.au/journal/monoprint-monotype/ I hope it helps 🥰
Hi Katja - it has more body (viscosity). I'm sure you could use any matte medium and get a similar effect, but it might take many more layers. I encourage you to experiment with what you have 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio Gotcha! I thought maybe it had more of that ... encaustic haze or something. You know what I'm talking about. They all have that soft look that makes them look edible. 🤣
