I’ll be honest, this style of “art” (for the most part, there ARE exceptions) pretty much all looks the same to me and is among the absolute ugliest forms of “art” in all the world…..TO ME….gotta emphasize this is obviously my personal opinion lol

Wow. I loved watching your exploration of mixed media and how you let yourself go with the flow. I think that is the biggest thing I’d struggle with as I’m always trying to be so precise in my pencil colouring. I love looking at people’s mixed media journals, but I’ve always had a lingering thought of “what is the point of the finished piece? Isn’t it just smearing different mediums on a page and sticking stuff on top? Isn’t it a waste of supplies? What do you do with it after?” Like I’m always trying to figure out what end goal this achieves, rather than it being just an enjoyable process. I’ve learnt from this video it doesn’t have to be about the end result. It’s purely the childlike enjoyment of making marks on a page without the adult brain worrying about what it’s “supposed” to be. Once you’ve allowed yourself that freedom, you can then start to hone techniques to incorporate into the piece, like complementary colour schemes for overall cohesion, or taking lots of time to detail the focal point whilst everything around it is loose and expressive. I’m not saying I’m completely in that “free” mindset yet, but I’d love to work on getting there. I hope you and the family are feeling better now, thank you for your efforts in bringing this video to us ❤
I'm the same way! I'm a perfectionist, so it takes me a ridiculous amount of time to finish a coloring page, and I've even gone back almost a year after finishing a page to "fix" tiny details that no one but me would even notice was there! And the worst part about it is that when I go back to "fix" a page that's already done, I know in the back of my mind how ridiculous it is but I just can't help myself! When I'm flipping through the pages of my coloring books to look for a new page to start, that's when I will notice something on a finished page and I have to "fix" it right away! It's definitely hard to break out of that mindset!
I think you 'get there' by just doing it. What we get from this is really hard to describe and I don't know that people tend to believe that this mostly intangible result is real or valid. I think it's easier for me now, at a fairly advanced age, than it would have been in my 30s but... I'm all about risk and adventure now. I'm almost a little glad when an idea doesn't turn out like I'd hoped because now I can experiment with something where it can't get any worse. And I usually find a way to be happy with it (these pieces are often some of my most successful).
I'd also like to encourage folks to consider ways they can share or gift their creative works with others. I make small pieces that can be mailed in a first class envelope and mail them to 5-7 of my good friends. Some go to my family members. I tell them not to treat them as precious. When they're ready, they are welcome to toss an item, pass it along to others, or use it as a piece in their own art. Think of them as greeting cards rather than a gift. I hear back that these pieces - and the connection between friends that they facilitate - have been meaningful not only to the recipient but to others in their lives. Some pass them along or friends visiting them just enjoy thumbing through them. One even said her postal carrier told her she looks forward to getting one in her mailbag to see what I've done with the envelopes (always decorated as well). One friend called them 'wee joys' and I thought that was perfect. I don't think our creations need to have any purpose beyond the experience of being creative. But I like putting that idea out there that sharing can be joyful as well.
I could not have said it better myself. I guess I have a hard time letting go of the control, too. But I am a practical person so have always felt like there ought to be a useful finished product. I need to let go of that! Why can’t i just have the fun?!

I know this is about mixed media, but it seems more about art freedom, which is an important lesson to all artists. Thank you for this great video. You make wonderful art no matter what the media.
I used to do something like this back when I was in highschool, it was just how I journaled my life. I wish I still had them, but they were in my car when it was stolen. I would clip out literally just anything I liked from anywhere, photos, magazines, packaging, and stick it all in a composition notebook and just kind of.. collage pages as the days when on. I've missed it for so long, but never managed to get back to it since then. I should try again

i used to do a lot of mixed media art journal stuff and I haven’t done it in years. Been in a major art block lately so I think this appearing at the top of my homepage is the sign I need to stop overthinking it and just play again. Thank you! ❤
This is a FASCINATING video! My imagination started running wild. Disney themes. Flowers plants trees. The Beatles. Notes my children wrote to me. Old newspaper clippings my mom saved. On and on! But I love coloring and I don't have enough time for that - how can I start a new hobby??? I have to have a ponder. Thank you for posting this video. I REALLY enjoyed it!!!

I had a big multimedia scrapbooking phase and it was so hard to let go and what i thought was ugly or chaotic was actually beautiful. I have a smashbook which is full of fun things i created but my favorite page is one of all my movie tickets. The memories of them.
Ephemera is also my most favorite part of all paper crafting & scrapbooking. And stickers

Wonderful video in every aspect. Six years ago I discovered Jane Davenport, mixed media and art journaling and it has filled my life with colour and joy. I love colouring, drawing and painting, but I always turn to art journaling to fill up with good vibes. Thanks for this video!
I remember, in middle school art class, we were doing an underwater piece. I decided to draw speech bubbles above the fish, reading, “Hi.” I was into comics and manga books at the time. The art teacher said it was nice, except for the speech bubbles. That hurt my feelings, and as an art teacher, she should’ve known better.
It’s so disappointing when teachers don’t recognize creativity!
Ouch, you would think middle school art class is place for most relaxed creativity, since its not art school and high school where people prep for it.
This is so so inspirational, for a perfectionist too timid to commit to a creative outlet. So pumped to try any number of these techniques. Loved your conversations with these passionate artists - thank you!
I got into mixed media during Covid and now it’s my main hobby! I love it so much, I have about 8 art journals on the go. One thing I would recommend is a “use it up” journal … so when you have extra paint/paste just slap it in that journal as a layer. Eventually some of those pages will have enough layers to add a focal point and be finished. And yes - trust the process!! Also it’s just paper and paint, if you really hate a page just paint over it and start again. I also love brayer rub off backgrounds from gelli plate

Hi Sarah - very good video, exciting, and inspiring, I picked up a big A3 block and threw paint on it... I'm not afraid of art.... I'm a practicing artist as a profession (theatre design, writing, costume design) but painting has alluded me until the past two years and now it's all here, it's a total mess.... and I hope you do more of these videos.... making things and showing us.... Mix media must do is an appron and a vest (just cut an opening on an old long-sleeve T-S). There's something in the act of ''putting your art clothes on" to get you in the right space. It makes you unafraid of the mess because you are set up for it...
Love it!!! When my kids were in early elementary school, I taught them how to make paper using newspaper, white glue, water. Then we would use old pantihose wrapped over wire coat hangers to fish in all that goo to make sheets. Then we would make books out of these pages sowe could decorate them any which way we liked. No rules! They would spend a whole Saturday doing pages. Long story short my youngest did graphic design, fashion design , interior design in Uni. Going back at age 30 to uni to do marketing. She fell in love with art! My grandson just left home to study fashion at Drexel University, because he's another art bug! I forwarded this video for reminiscing.

i adore mixed media art, i feel like it really peaked in popular interest 5-10 years ago and has sort of dwindled since, so i'm thrilled to see you picking it up. I’ve been on my mixed media journey since 2021 and Sarah this has to be one of the best videos I’ve seen on RUclips and I’ve seen ALOT and have an abundance of JD and DW products among so many other art supplies. One thing I noticed is you kept going back to the palette knife/spatula and modeling paste or whatever it was you were using through stencils with the palette knife- I feel confident in saying your future art will be filled with texture and dimension. I lost my dad and sister a few years ago and I can tell you are trying to get back to that “fulfilled” part of yourself that use to be there when your mama was still here. Just know you aren’t alone in that aspect and I’m cheering you on! You’ve got this!

I love this sooo much! I love mixed media (Ive done a few amateur collage pieces lol) but I’m not going to lie, I am a perfectionist and while I am trying to let go with doing more abstract art, I am so intimidated by the styles of mixed media you did! I would totally do skillshare classes of all the different styles you’ve explored! Or purchase a book if you ever made one! You’ve inspired me to one day give it a go :) and you’ve inspired to follow these amazing artists today :)
This video wasn't what I expected, but that's a good thing because I might not have watched it otherwise. Seeing this art from a new perspective, I found your video truly WOW! I was captivated the entire time. This type of art is quite intimidating for me, as a non-artist and perfectionist who struggles with anxiety. I often spend an entire day staring at a blank page, unsure of what to create, or wanting to create something but afraid to mess it up before I even start. Throughout the video, I kept thinking that I wouldn't be able to do it. With ADHD, I like having a step-by-step guide. It's daunting, but I hope to find the courage to dive in one day! Thank you so much for this video.

Ive been struggling with my medium of choice lately (alcohol markers) and I love holding onto ephemera because my memory's not the best.... I think this video unlocked something in me. I might get crafty around old receipts and tickets and magazines :3c

I’m so drawn to this, but with fatigue issues I can't handle the mess. Even if it is the whole point to be messy, you still have to clean up at one point… 😅 Would love to see less messy approaches, I have a feeling you can incorporate many aspects without using a ton of supplies and techniques. 😊 Loved this video!❤
I think you can definitely be strategic and not go all-messy-crazy like I did. A lot of the people I spoke to said they have different areas with specific supplies, and so they’ll just spend a day with pencils, or another day with paints. Not many of them complete a page in one sitting, they just work on 20 pages at once.
I am autistic and can't handle a mess neither. So I do a little planning before I start and arrange everything I want to use in a small cardboard box. I stick to these materials in the box, so I don't get overwhelmed. Over time, you'll find out what combinations you like. And if you want to try something you, just sneak another color or anonther material in :) Afterwards, it's very easy to clean again. Or you can put everything in the box to come back to it later.
You can get as neat as is humanly possible while still using variety of techniques. What I like to do is find one picture/scrap that I like the look of slap it on a page of an old book or sketchbook and if I wanna do more I add things one by one (sometimes after weeks of forgetting about that specific page) there is mess on my table but it doesn't come from this. There is glue, book and max two other art supplies on my table and that's it.
Oh my !!! thank you for validating my obsession . So fun but so messy. I moved & having to cut down my stashes. A whole drawer full to the trash, oh how that hurt. Other people just don’t understand. I’m making some sketch & journal books for exploration!!

Love, love, love this video! I've been slowly venturing into mixed media as a person who's always been extremely creative but, like you, has also always been a BIG perfectionist. One thing I love about mixed media specifically is letting go of expectations. I go in without a strict image in my mind, just a feeling, or a colour, or a material that I want to do something with, and from there it really feels like it can never fail. Even if I end the day not quite happy with what I've done, there's an open feeling of "I'll circle back to it to finish if I feel like it" that I've never really felt before.
Something that I've always enjoyed about creative writing is that oftentimes the plot and characters lead me to where THEY want to go, and mixed media feels much the same.
This is probably my favourite video you've created, your good vibes and amazing talent on show. It was so nice to see you interacting with other creatives.
You made me tear up when you mentioned your mum, hit really close to home, my mum passed in 2019, and I miss her every day, but I'm also glad it didn't happen in 2020, being a Melbournian I can't imagine how awful it was for people losing their loved ones during that time. You're doing amazing, keep up the great work! 🥰
That’s a similar time to my Mum, and I was also thankful that it wasn’t during Covid. It was difficult enough, but it would have been so much harder during lockdowns. Sorry for your loss xo

I'm a graffiti style artist and I do acrylic pouring, but I got into doing mixed media after I started selling random things online. I wanted to make my own mini thank you cards (and stickers) for my customers and mm is an awesome way to include something cool and handmade, that didn't necessarily take a lot of time. I use lots of random things to make stamps and stencils like bubble wrap(looks like leopard print!) straws and bottles(circles) textured packing paper and more! I've ended up having a lot of fun doing it. Definitely makes a mess but worth it lol

I have made journals in the past, but I've been struggling with my health lately., so I am staying home more and wanted to make a Journal for playing in but was not sure how I did it in the past. This video has inspired me to make one and have fun. I have so many ideas thanks to you and the other wonderful Makers of Art.
For a good while now, I have been making home made cards using nothing more than plain white cardstock dyed with tea or maybe coffee (depends on my supply), and then paint over that when its all dry to whatever color scheme I want. My family keeps all of them.
It's so freeing. Excellent video. I love playing with the gelli plate. There are so many good gelli plate artists on RUclips I have to give a shout out to...Froyle, Robyn McClendon, Quirky Queens Journals to name just a couple. Jane Davenport is so inspiring.

I don't art journal as such, although I have given it a go a few times. I do enjoy mixed media when I am exploring an idea or composition. That there are no mistakes and it is all underpainting is comforting when playing around. I also enjoy coloured and painted paper collage. It is a difficult process compared to painting but it is fun.
Gelatin plate printing (hectography) has a long history. Goes back to Germany in the 1870s, where it was a descendant of the letterpress and developed as a way to make duplicates of printed matter, using aniline ink. It had an important role in WWI and WWII and as a duplicator process for businesses and schools into the mid-20th Century, where not only a gelatine pad was used, but a drum version was also developed. From the late 50s and through the 60s it was used to make underground newspapers and posters. It was even used to make temporary tattoos at one point. The art department when I was in elementary school in the 1970s still had a gelatin duplicator, but had to pour pads as they were no longer readily available. If you like gel printing, you will probably also like silicone printing as well. You can pour your own, using products like flex seal, or use a silicone pad that is used for protecting a table top when crafting or lining a drawer. I have heard people using silicone baking sheets, But I have never had much luck, they seem a little to thin.

Thank you so much for compiling this video, Sarah. I have an untouched journal just waiting for inspiration and I think I've found it!! What spoke to me the most was using a color palette as "grounding" for each page. I've been looking for a cohesive element and this just might be the one for me!! I also love, love, love the use of acetate to add informational elements on top of some of your pages, especially the face page. I also like the concept of using a coloring page as a base. Great idea-starters in this video 🤓

The fun (and the curse) with mixed is everything turns in to a tool or somthing you can use. I have a two room flat my livingroom is my shop with a couch in it. I have so many bits and peaces and bags and stuff. I resently used something I kept since 20 years 😁 I am not a horder, I am crafter! There is no ugly! Something you made can never be ugly. This is the video i needed. I’m a junkjournaler and tho I very much like my style I tried so many times to get to a more loose and whimsical style and every single time I end up with a neat Journal with straight edges and everything lined up and every stamp and sticker thought trough where to put. I will definitely change to mixedmedia to train to let go. This looks so much fun and I hope this works for me too! Thank you for this !!! ❤
