    I'm following Jason's camera setting recommendations for the zv-e10 but using ITU709 Matrix for the color mode instead of S-Gamut3.Cine for similar reasons why S-Log2 is used over S-Log3 for 8-bit cameras. Cullen Kelly recommends configuring a good color management space in DaVinci Resolve before grading anything as well. After some experimentation I found the best color management settings (found in file > project settings > color management) for Jason's zv-e10 setting recommendations to be Da Vinci YRGB Color Managed > Uncheck Automatic Color Managed > Color Processing Mode set to Custom > input color space set to S-Gamut/S-Log2 > timeline color space set to Da Vinci WG/Intermediate > and the output color space set to REC.709-A. Also, in Preferences > General, tick "Automatically tag REC.709 Scene clips as REC.709-A" and for Mac users tick "Use Mac display color profile for viewers." That sets you up for a good foundation across the widest display and software based on color science, and then you can fiddle around with the primaries or HDR wheels to make any necessary tweaks, but the end result of those color management settings gets very, very close to a finished grade across all your clips recorded with the zv-e10 in S-Log2 with just a few clicks. The Da Vinci Resolve website has great tutorials on how to color grade based on scopes and other best practices to go even further and you can really go down the color grading rabbit hole with Cullen Kelly's channel.

I have watched so many videos about slog over the years, but there was always key unknowns that made the process very frustrating and unpredictable I found. You should not take photos using Slog in my opinion. Shooting RAW quality with Picture Profile OFF would be my recommendation... Then make sure your white balance is set correctly which result in super accurate colors. All you really need to do in Lightroom at that point is add some contrast, sharpness, maybe a touch of vibrance...

    Hello Jason, thank you for the informative video. I have a few questions regarding the Sony ZV-E10:
    1) May I ask why you chose S-Log2 instead of S-Log3 for your videos?
    2) How did you have Face/Eye Priority in AF on, whilst recording in XAVC S 4K file format?
    Thank you so much!

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Год назад +6

      Hello there, Slog3 on 8-bit Sony cameras is not as good as Slog2 in my opinion. Most experts that color grade all say this and it has to due with the color bit depth breaking apart when you try and grade the footage. 10-bit Sony cameras like the A7IV for example, you would want to use Slog3 for sure! As far as Face Priority AF goes, I am using 4k@24p and DON'T have proxy recording on, or PC Remote enabled so it works even with an HDMI cable plugged in...

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Год назад

      For outside use I tend to use the histogram more than a gray card for checking exposure. I do still use the gray card for custom white balance outside though if the lighting conditions are anything bit daylight. The issue with Slog2 for outside more than anything for me is the Base ISO being at 500. With fast prime lenses and a strong variable ND Filter is a must to keep that shutter speed at 1/50sec. When using the histogram just like when I showed it in this video, you need to make sure you are not clipping any highlights most importantly if possible.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Год назад +1

      I usually use the sharpen amount at about 2.5 which is default, to 3.5 depending on the lens I used.... If you go up top in the middle by the View option; to the left of View should be the word Fit. If you click on Fit you can change it 100% and then use the little box that comes up to move your video around so you can see what you want in detail. That is how you can dial in the sharpening with confidence! Does that make sense? All the best, Jay

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 месяцев назад

      I do it for every new scene that has different lighting conditions/ color temp... Within reason though of course, I'm not doing this constantly in regular life, but if I'm filming something for one of my videos I usually use Custom WB, hard set to "daylight" if I am outside, and/or in a pinch I will use Auto... In the studio I always use the custom WB and never really have to change it unless I switch the lights around or add a light for example. In my case the reason for using custom specifically is so I have the most accurate skin tones and when testing cameras and lenses I want the most accurate colors... However in the real world if humans are not in the scene I am way less likely to use custom...

      Well 120p is not near the same quality as 60 or 24p when you think about it. 120p has a similar file size to 24p, so it's not as good quality.. Therefore you really need to nail the exposure, because there is very little wiggle room in the footage for editing etc... Banding will be more likely and all of that...

    • @Jason_Hermann

      Well that is a lot more tricky. Auto ISO will work, but really what you want to do is use a variable ND and adjust the brightness as needed to maintain a proper shutter speed. Way easier said than done though... The badass Cine cameras like the FX6 for example have a built in electronic variable ND filter, which is how they work for variable lighting conditions making it a lot easier to use.

    I use also ZV-E10 with 16mm sigma lens, but on slog2/slog3 there is so much grain on this camera (especially in darken scene), that i have to use noise reduction in post process. I set a little overexpose image (between 1-2 M.M), but it doesn’t help. I wonder if its something wrong with my camera. Do you have the same problem with noise on this camera with slog? I always use base iso500. On diffrent profiles i don’t have any noise.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  11 месяцев назад

      I find if I under expose at all then it will have noise, so getting the exposure correct for whatever your subject is key. Just average raising 1.5 stops is not always enough depending on the subject you are exposing for. The gray card and zebra usually does a good job most of the time. I find it harder in the studio when there are a lot of dark areas and I am bright, but again if the exposure is correct the noise is not bad at all. There is not to much latitude on Slog2 in post either, so raising the exposure in post to bring up the shadows for example will add a ton of noise also....

      Yes, not sure where you got that. I prefer to use f/1.8 in the studio is all, but of course you can use any aperture on your camera. This video was on Slog2 and exposing for slog2...

      You can use zebras for whatever exposure amount you want... I have it set in this video for the proper grey card. when using Slog2.

      because its 8bit color and limited to grade you can only use slog3 if your camera is 10bit more colors to grade.

      That's where I need dig into deeper. Why and what is the difference on both options, well 3 options. As I noticed there is lots of opinions , and this is probably a very personal to each one. And looks like will have to find my best option in time. Just need to understand more of those codings it selfs and possiblities with each and combinations in between hardware and software. There are options to choose for a reason. Just was curious on the author's opinion of this post. But thanks anyway. All opinions mater for me, spent already hundreds of hours of different material in this sphere.

    Hey Jason thanks for such a detailed review. Have you come across a certain behavior where iso from 50 till 640 when shooting slog2/slog3 results in a massive red color shift for the zve-10 ? I have this behavior on my model. I also observed this on a model in the sony showroom.

    • @Jason_Hermann

      Prolly because you are not used to seeing log footage and I am not the best at working with it... Plus using the RGB lights makes it harder... The newer 10-bit cameras are also less noisy, like my A74 which I use Slog3 with for example.
