    The zebras to 100 thing is going to be the most helpful thing ever. I had it set to 70 and kept thinking I was WAY over exposed because of the zebras - and then my shadows were unrecoverable. Setting them to 100 makes so much more sense - and now knowing that those highlights will be recoverable still as long as they're not blown out is incredibly helpful.
    Thank you!

    That's a pretty good and short introduction to a topic that is not easy for everybody. :)
    I started to record in Slog 2 just recently and tried 2 things differently:
    1) I set my zebras to 106. I saw a video on Harv's channel where he stated to set "lower limit" for highlight preservation to the output value of your gamma (which, for Slog2, is 106). Don't know whether it's a big difference to your approach, however it works well.
    2) As I don't like DaVinci and don't want to spend TOO MUCH time with the editing process in an application that takes months to learn on its own, I did something that most people will probably call a stupidity, but I set my colour space to Rec. 709 in camera, lowered saturation to -15 and tweaked all the depth and tint settings as I already knew how they work best for me with my Cine2 profile. What I end up with is a file that I only have to tweak in terms of exposure, contrast and (slightly) saturation while gaining a lot of dynamic range for scenes involving a bright sky. On an 8-bit camera (A7R III), this gives nice results.
    Even though pros might find this ridiculous, I can say that the amount of DR gained this way is significant. Not just over creative mode recording, but even over Cine2 which I would consider one of the best non-log gammas in terms of DR.

    I’m having a heck of a time understanding log.
    They say to expose to the right and bring exposure down in post to keep noise minimal but if you’re supposed to expose to the right than your skin tones shouldn’t be at 70IRE and the clipping point wouldn’t be at 100IRE. They both would be slightly higher but how much higher? I don’t love the idea of using monitor luts all the time. I’d love to know what to set my zebras so when the lut is off.

    • @TimmyLodhi
      @TimmyLodhi  Год назад

      It can be complicated! You can overexpose a decent amount with SLOG-2 and still bring those values down to "correct exposure" in post. The idea is that it reduces shadow noise. The 70 IRE for skintones thing is subjective, really if you're focused on proper skin exposure for interviews or talking heads, but doesn't always mean it's gonna look good.

    I've recently got back into photography and videography, after quite a while of not having the time. I've got an A6300 with the kit lens and a Sigma 30mm 2.8, and have always struggled exposing slog2 correctly. Are there any differences you'd recommend doing for the apsc cameras, or should your method work as well?
    Also, white balance doesn't seem to work on my camera, it just sets the white balance to green, have you ever faced that issue? Can't find much info on that bit thought you may have come across that issue before.

    • @TimmyLodhi
      @TimmyLodhi  3 года назад +3

      I have used SLOG-2 for low-light conditions in the past but to be honest, it's not the best. Because of the noise performance in the shadows, you tend to get a lot of ugly noise. I've had to cover this up by using denoiser plug-ins or adding grain to hide it. I think HLG or Cine3/4 might be better options for low-light.

    some say to expose zebra at 109, others at 94. While i understand ettr and meter level should be +1 to +2 depending on the scene, what’s the certain number that the highlight info is gone?

    Do you use an ND filter for slog 2? I'm trying to decide between a 2-5 stop filter or a 6-9 stop

    great video! been waiting for this one! So you don't overexpose using the exposure compensation just the ISO?

      Yeah. I just use zebras as my main exposure tool when I don’t have an external monitor. From there, I’ll know how high I can overexposed.

    in low light condition do you use zebra setting in 100+ too?

      That's a good question. When shooting in low-light, I'll rarely have something clipping that high. I would prefer to use a waveform monitor or false color in those conditions.
