The zebras to 100 thing is going to be the most helpful thing ever. I had it set to 70 and kept thinking I was WAY over exposed because of the zebras - and then my shadows were unrecoverable. Setting them to 100 makes so much more sense - and now knowing that those highlights will be recoverable still as long as they're not blown out is incredibly helpful. Thank you!
I've watched all ya videos on S-LOG 2 and hands down, the best on RUclips. I've ran from shooting S-LOG 2 because of all the misinformation. But after watching your videos, I'm going back to S-LOG 2 on my Sony A7III.
Timmy, thank you. Thank you for making it easy to understand, follow along and clarify so may questions I’ve had for the last 2yrs of owning my A7III when it comes to using and exposing SLOG. You don’t understand how many videos I’ve seen that have left me clueless or more confused. I’m glad I bumped into your channel and hope you continue to make videos in general.
That's a pretty good and short introduction to a topic that is not easy for everybody. :) I started to record in Slog 2 just recently and tried 2 things differently: 1) I set my zebras to 106. I saw a video on Harv's channel where he stated to set "lower limit" for highlight preservation to the output value of your gamma (which, for Slog2, is 106). Don't know whether it's a big difference to your approach, however it works well. 2) As I don't like DaVinci and don't want to spend TOO MUCH time with the editing process in an application that takes months to learn on its own, I did something that most people will probably call a stupidity, but I set my colour space to Rec. 709 in camera, lowered saturation to -15 and tweaked all the depth and tint settings as I already knew how they work best for me with my Cine2 profile. What I end up with is a file that I only have to tweak in terms of exposure, contrast and (slightly) saturation while gaining a lot of dynamic range for scenes involving a bright sky. On an 8-bit camera (A7R III), this gives nice results. Even though pros might find this ridiculous, I can say that the amount of DR gained this way is significant. Not just over creative mode recording, but even over Cine2 which I would consider one of the best non-log gammas in terms of DR.
I’ve been using Nikon for my videography but I have the A7iii and was intimidated to even try it for video. So many content creators provided crappy info that just confused me more. I’m going to try this setup out tomorrow. Thanks for the great info👍
Hi, thanks for the video. I have the impression that there´s a tendency to shoot thinkin in post-color-grading stuff (S-Log2) and not to try setting the camera to film the way we want.
Great Video i'm 14 years old and a filmmaker & Photographer, I have a question i'm shooting currently on my Sony ZV-E10 (8bit) slog 2 ITU709 Matrix can also use your convertion Lut or is it just for s gamut ?

Hi Timmy Thanks for sharing your knowledge helped me improve myself so much Could you please do video about how to shout at night and low light please please please
Thanks for this. I just got the a7iii. I haven’t loved any of the other creators luts either. This is the first one I’ve loved because it actually looks great on darker skin. Going to use these tips today.
I’m having a heck of a time understanding log. They say to expose to the right and bring exposure down in post to keep noise minimal but if you’re supposed to expose to the right than your skin tones shouldn’t be at 70IRE and the clipping point wouldn’t be at 100IRE. They both would be slightly higher but how much higher? I don’t love the idea of using monitor luts all the time. I’d love to know what to set my zebras so when the lut is off.
It can be complicated! You can overexpose a decent amount with SLOG-2 and still bring those values down to "correct exposure" in post. The idea is that it reduces shadow noise. The 70 IRE for skintones thing is subjective, really if you're focused on proper skin exposure for interviews or talking heads, but doesn't always mean it's gonna look good.
I keep coming back to your channel. Will you do a video with your workflow using the ninja? I am starting to use zebras at 103+ on the ninja and 58 on the camera display to try to cover highlights and skin tones. It would be interesting to see how you work with the atomos. Peace!
