There's no feeling in the game similar to overcoming the Urge, dying, and discovering Withers is way more than you'd ever expected him to be.
I had my eyes filled with tears the whole scene (after killing Orin, and as a Baal assassin, having met our.. other acquaintance)

FYI, the reason the Dragonborn used by default for the Dark Urge is white is because, the White Dragons in DND are some of the most evil of all Dragons, yet is the archetypical wolf in sheep clothing kinda thing. Not that you're necessarily calling Wyll a bad character...but I am. I feel like the premise of Wyll is good, and the voice performance was awfully good as well. But the writers never focus on Wyll's flaws (self-righteousness and borderline-slavish selflessness) which would have deepened his character. Case in point: even the great sin that damned him to be a warlock was...selflessly saving the life of another person. What if Wyll did something unambiguously selfish instead? Would have lent his character some humanity.

I would highly recommend playing paladin Dark urge if you enjoy roleplaying as a person who chose to live with their regret and chose to remain an oathbreaker out of principle. SPOILERS below
I made a Paladin and became an oathbreaker after murdering Alfira and for my characters roleplay he chose to keep that guilt of murdering an innocent and being an oathbreaker and chose to abandon the gods out of principle made for an amazing playthrough, at the very end of the game when the narrator mentions that one kill you could not prevent just felt perfect for my character. He went and was a pragmatic anti-hero/hero, a bit inbetween, would yell, intimidate, get answers and results but would also be a selfless hero to the innocent, trying to atone, get answers and chose to never get closure for the murder of Alfira and it was straight up just epic.

That Minsc and Jaheira potentially appear in BG3 (and Viconia DeVir) feels more like fan service than a "sequel." Especially given that Minsc and Viconia appear so late in the game and Jaheira doesn't become recruitable until later in Act 2. For that matter, Drizzt Do'Urden appeared in the original games, but I would not say that that made the Baldur's Gate games in any way sequels to Drizzt stories. If you plan on embracing the darkness within then I recommend rogue/rogue multiclass, necromancer or druid of spores.
I want to also point out that if you play REAL smart, and keep your urge quiet and sly you can absolutly pull a Machiaveli/Palpatine and sway 'good' people to the dark. You just have to work out what motivates them deep down and present them with choices to access their deepest desires while doing great evil.
Ive managed to achieve this and I converted Gale, Karlack and even wyll to the dark, Asterion is easy of course, as is shadowheart. I think Laezell wanted me dead at the end to be fair - but im willing to bet you can turn here genuinely evil too.

I recommend Ancients paladin if you want to go paladin. Tenets are more lenient (so far) as long as you don't break your word.
Yes, Timber hurt. Karlach had choice words for me.

"don't play a paladin"... too late. I played my first playthrough as a Vengeance oath paladin. (Maybe spoilers ahead?) I thought I would eventually turn to an oath breaker... but no. Somehow I was able to stay true to my oath up until the end, resisting the urge every time (except the ones you don't have a choice) and just being honest. Lover surviving, great "good" endings all over the place, so it's definitely doable, and even a great choice/challenge for a paladin. After finishing the game some more runs, I think in fact that the dark urge is the DEFAULT character's origin. Because (spoiler) it's way more tied to BG1 and 2 than any other origin. Great video, by the way!

I've been having a great time playing an exiled Lolth-sworn drow resisting the Urge. The tension between what I want to do and what the Urge demands is really fun. I absolutely agree that it's best as a second playthrough, though. Knowing just how intrusive the Urge is compared to a normal playthrough enhances the experience for me.

Oath of vengeance paladin is a great way to play dark urge. It's really really fitting i think. And if you lean into the urge, oathbreaker can be exactly appropriate for the role play. If you plan to fight the urge and you fail sometimes, paladin rarely having to buy redemption adds extra weight to that role play too

Still to this day, I think dark urge is more annoying than anything. It only ever seems to occur in the moments that would benefit me, only to ruin my day. That one bit in the camp where we have to kill is the one reason I hate the thing because it doesn't let us fight it, it just makes us do it, I would have gladly taken a choice where we could have fought the urge to avoid doing nonconcent murder for one day of exhaustion or fatigue.
I would glady take that challenge. This is why I think BG3 might have needed more time, especially with all the updates that came after.

You can 100% go through the Durge playthrough without actually unalive anyone important to any storyline. But this does require a lot of metagaming, where you knock out the npc before you longrest for the cutscene to happen. This will spawn in an npc that will never appear in the game otherwise, that will take the unaliving instead of the important character.

I was totally surprised too which was amazing. Being a oathbreaker locks you out of respec'ing which was a minor inconvenience since i was still learning how to play. You can multiclass still, i took 3 levels of warlock but the build was meh. I ended following a redemption path, and now i restored my oath, taking an oath of vengeance and with 3 levels of rogue. Combined with great weapon Im putting up crazy damage and loving it.

Id just started DU playthrough last night and watching this before booting up again.
I had just done the gameplay from your final sample segment and yeah... HO. LY. SHIT. This playthrough is gonna be intense... until at least Act 3. Then it will be in the tavern, not in tents.
Having done one very in depth playthrough myself now, I need to start binging content on how The Emperor is actually evil. Like a mind flayer with the highest possible deception/persuasion stats in Faerun because he remembers but doesn't feel his humanity. How he snacked on Stelmane. How he mind controlled half the city and betrayed his own core principles as founder all while believing himself to be the good guy the entire time. Even when he turns against you to destroy Faerun. How he sees himself gaining power as the real and only "salvation" of the land/goal, because he's so self absorbed and sees every other lifeform as less than bacteria.
How he is the one that tadpoled us in the beginning, after killing the other mindflayers in that room. How he was on/piloting that crashed Nautiloid as a mission from Gortash to steal the Prism after dominating the Elder Brain, and how he was pretending to be enthralled to be able to seek the Prism for himself. How we are intended to be his "beautiful weapons". How he doesn't need to be anywhere near the Prism to retain autonomy because it was Ansur that gave him that gift not Orpheus.
It's annoying that the game claims it's The Emperor protecting us when it's Orpheus the entire time and The Emperor is just a stow away keeping his super soldiers (Tav and co) under close observation and constant mind control. We should either be able to kill him early without negative consequence and then have Orpheus take on the same role thereafter until we can get the hammer - only this time we would be independent thinkers without The Emperor's constant deception.
YES DO THAT. I know I know it all. But I would still binge the shit out of that shit like Alt Shift X did on YT for Game of Thrones. Like how Im watching this after committing to D.U. playthrough already.
