      Jergal is an old, old, old god, and it's worth noting that, despite being the Seneschal of Myrkul during the Time of Troubles, he was nowhere to be seen when he was cast down during the time of troubles, and kept his role as Seneschal for each of the two death gods that followed (Cyric and the following Kelemvor). In fact, his location is unknown during that period where gods were thrown to the mortal plane, and whilst his traditional avatar isn't easily identifiable (he often looks like a mummified insect, not Withers), it's also possible that AO considered him one of the few gods that were trustworthy enough to not be punished. (Given that his stated reason was them treating the world as if it was for their own amusement, this does track as Jergal takes his current role seriously). In turn, he's probably allowed to be a bit lax with the rules because he's trustworthy to have a good reason.

      @Setherio  Год назад +685

      That's an interesting idea. As a DM, I could definitely see that happening in a game given proper circumstances (such as the ones here and the setup would have to be made).
      However, I'd like to submit an idea that he is Jergal... He's a record keeper, he's a scribe, his utter distain towards the Dead Three. The most convincing of all clues though are these two:
      1) Loading Screen Tip: "The Dead Three - Bhaal, Bane, and Myrkul - were all once mortal men, but ascended to godhood in a strange bargain with Jergal, the original god of death, murder, and strife."
      2) Crumbled Journal found in the Gorion Mausoluem (in Graveyard in Lower City in Act 3) contains the following { I was still a supplicant when I came face to face with him: Masked in gold, his skin fine and worn as parchment. Jergal, the death-keeper, the End of Everything. I asked what he needed of me. He asked a simple question: "What is the worth of a single mortal's life?" I knew not how to respond, and said as such. He seemed nonplussed; neither disappointed nor pleased. I fell to my knees in respect for his awesome power. This garnered no reaction. There I stayed, trembling with an emotion I could not name. And when I stood again, the Finale Scribe was gone. }
      I only found this note a while after I posted this video. I swear, every playthrough I find things I never knew existed - it's amazing!

When you play as Karlach and die at the end, he visits you in the afterlife. The afterscene where he talks to The Dead Three kinda makes it obvious that he is a god. So while technically less powerful for giving up undesired parts of his portfolio's to the Dead Three, he is still not powerless and is still by all rights a god. • @phantasticgoose
      @phantasticgoose Месяц назад +2

      Durge themself is also a bit of an enigma on the “mortality” front, since they were created directly from a piece of Bhaal - in other words it’s not necessarily wrong to say that Durge is a fragment of a god, even if it is a weakened one like Bhaal.
      So they may just be immortal on two fronts. Being Withers/Jergal’s chosen, they will persist for as long as he does. And being a demigod sculpted from the flesh of the god of murder, they will live as long as they wish without worrying (much) about age and time.
      Whether the latter is the case or not, either way, Durge as Withers’ chosen is going to live for a very long time.

  • @SadeStVille
    @SadeStVille Год назад +45

    While I do wish the companions had gotten a chance for reaction I think a lot of ppl's contempt for this scene comes from a misunderstanding of how DND deities and even quasi-deities work. During the time of troubles (about 130 yrs before game start) literally spread his spawn across faerun bc he knew he was gonna get slaughtered, skip to 1482 (10 yrs before game start) the prophecy of his resurrection is completed. BG3 takes a slight side step in which Durge is implicated to not be a bhaalspawn born from a mortal woman but simply a mortal portion of Bhaal. (2 paragraphs of rambling about the theme of Durge as an Eve allegory). BUT this also means that durge for all intents and purposes is effectively just a divine conduit which during the play through of the game gained it's own consciousness which you prove by resisting the dark urge. But since before that final moment of defiance other gods literally cannot intervene. Post the second sundering every god literally shut up as to not piss Ao off for a second time but also started to not interact with each other. To attempt to directly influence a God's chosen would've been asking for another era of upheaval which is what you're attempting to prevent (or cause) through the cult of the absolute. But once you're rejected by Bhaal, Withers (who is Jergel for all intents and purposes within the game) is actually able to step in and tie off at least one thread from his mistake with ascending the dead three.

    A defiant Urge and Withers have honestly such a cool relationship.
    In my headcanon my merry band of OCs and their companions band together after the events of BG 3 and end up founding their own adventurers guild.
    The one that coins the name is Serkan, my reformed Dark Urge, who through his deep gratitude towards Withers suggests they call themselves the Scribes.
    The others are surprised at his suggestion and he's about to retract, thinking the name is terrible, when Kara, the leader of the group, agrees and says it's a good name.
    And thus the Scribes were born to witness all greatness in Faerun and carry word of it back home to their most honored patron.

    A scribe and advocate of the dead, huh? Guess that answers what happenned to Jergal after all this time. If you didn't know, Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul were inheritors of his powers long ago as mortals. Bane took the right to rule as the foremost of tyrants, Bhaal the power of murder and Myrkul over death and the undead. In giving up his power, Jergal himself was reduced to a deific scribe of sorts of the dead and quietly watched things play out over time. iirc, he's served at least 2 gods of the underworld/death since that giving with Kelemvor currently holding the title and the trio being killed. Of course, Bane and Bhaal returned after their so-called 'deaths', but neither holding any grudge against the lowly senechal.

    Withers wields the sort of Arch Lich/Arch Mage power that all wizards dream of.
    To create such power within an abandoned vessel would require at least some knowledge of spells beyond even 9th level.
    Withers is verified demigod status at minimum.
    I wonder if withers is a servant of Myrkul.
    I wouldnt be surprised if Bane and Myrkul were out doing things seeing as Bhaal himself makes an actual appearance in Avatar form.(Avatar form is like a max level copy of a God using as much of their power as they are allowed to stuff into a mortal vessel.
    Just manifesting an Avatar takes alot of power.
    I imagine Bhaal is more than furious for this failure.

      @whitewall2253 Jergal never gave it away. If anything he just made sure they knew about the process to ascension and that a particular weapon out there could do the job allowing them to take a gods place.
      The dead three ascended because they were able to remove the gods they tried to replace when before mortals just struggled to temporarily slay gods.
      In the end they only partially succeed.
      Bhaal and Bane maintained the most power while now Myrkul is just a lap dog for the new god of the dead.
