Interesting video! Im in my lat 20s and have always preferred sitting in the W position. As a kid, sitting cross legged was a foreign concept to me. I didnt learn how until i was a teenager! Even then, it took a while for it to get comfortable. Some of it may have had to do with flexibility.
I still sit like this and I’m 33. My mom still sits like this and she’s 60. Wouldn’t have even given this position a second thought if my baby started doing it when he’s ready to sit haha
@@Keck_YT Not the OP, but I sat like this as did my dad. We are both hyper mobile and therefore more flexible than is normal. However we both grew up playing outside most of the time and being very active. I was an amateur gymnast as a child. I was stronger and faster than all the kids in my year until high school when the boys overtook me. My core strength was excellent HOWEVER being hypermobile means that I do have other issues with my joints. I don't believe any of them were caused by w sitting since my legs are actually the least flexible part of me! It's something to keep an eye on but not necessarily harmful as long as the child is leading an active lifestyle otherwise.
I'm a little surprised because I never would have thought twice about this sitting position. As an adult I occasionally sit in this position without much discomfort. I wonder if I should be concerned about my own musculoskeletal development?
My LO was a month premature, walked late and is incredibly clumsy. W sitting is my LOs seating position of choice. I can’t recall any other positions used. I’ll be contacting my GP on Monday for an appointment.
Hi Emma, really interesting video, thanks for this upload. To further expand on your comment to the potential problem of W sitting and lack of working the core muscles is that being in this position constantly can contribute to constipation problems. When our LO started to crawl at 6 months she was constantly in the W position. Although our home nurse told us it was nothing to worry about at the time (and she did not seem to have any of the issues you mentioned) she had started having constipation issues when she started solids and I think her constant W sitting exacerbated the issue as she may not have had the core muscles needed to push out the heavier poos. She seemed to like the W position when (briefly) staying put as it meant she could easily be on the go but of course if I had known at the time she wasn't working her core by being in that position I would have encouraged bum sitting.
Well our child (now 3.5) Always preferred that position as She is much more comfortable to play With her legs out of the way (block, water colors in the floor) but we taught her early on that crosslegged sitting is healthier for her joints and she adjusts the position whenever She can (especially while Reading) but we know She has a hard time playing memory on the floor with her legs in front of her, so sometimes we let her. Her pediatrician knows about it and keeps an eye on it.
Another great quality video Emma! Keep up the amazing work !! I am a couple of months/years ahead of this video, do you have any video on colicky 1/3months old baby?
I’m 40 and still always sit like that as for me there is nothing more uncomfortable than sitting cross-legged. My baby is 4 months old but she seems to be the other way round cause she always lies there thighs turned outwards like a frog. One thing we don’t have in common 😉
My baby is 9 months old and sits only side and w sittings. Should I be concerned? In my country they say that I should be concerned if my baby doesn’t sit independently until 10 months old.
My baby is 6 month old just started to crawl And sit. He mostly sits in w and if I make him sit with leg front he seems to do fine as well. Should I be worried
It's great that you were able to ask your doctor about this. If you are concerned at all a physical therapist AKA physiotherapist would be able to answer any of your questions.
Thanks for your information. I have question about standing. My baby is 9 month now, he can pull up standing by himself. After he can standing by himself, he don’t want to clawing and sitting anymore. But the problem is he stand of his toes, not full feet. What should I do? Is this bad for the leg development?
Hi @lin jia thanks for the message. It’s hard to give you advice when I can’t see your little one. Always best to see a doctor or paediatric physical therapist if you have concerns because they can see you in person. Just wondering what your little one is doing when he is over standing. Is he sitting back on the floor or are you helping him walk by holding his hands? If you are holding his hands to walk I would recommend you move your hands to provide support at his rib cage as this will encourage the feet to be flat on the floor. Also if you are using a baby walker I would recommend reducing/stopping using it as this encourages baby’s to stand and walk on there toes.
@@EmmaHubbard Hi Emma thanks for your so quick response. We have checked by our doctor and she thought there’s nothing wrong with his feet. But I don’t want this wrong standing position will bad for his leg development like not straight in the future. So I don’t know should I stop him to standing now?
Is there an age where sitting in a W is harmful? My daughter still sits in a W most of the time and she is 25 months old. She is able to sit in other positions but chooses to sit in a W most of the time. Thank you!
@@kittenmyu every month seems to be relevant in regards to development when kiddos are little, so I figured I’d say her age in months rather than years.
Generally as therapists we don’t become concerned at any age if the child is w sitting but also using other sitting positions as well. If they are only w sitting then generally it might mean low muscle tone or low core strength or musculoskeletal concerns. If she is up and walking and walking well on uneven surfaces (grass, slight hill etc) then I wouldn’t be concerned. But always check in with the doctor if your worried.
My family (mum , sisters and me) is sitting in this position every time when we are sitting on the floor 😅 it's comfortable. Your Son like it more when he have one leg before him and the other in V
