If Lakon is capable of designing ships with realistic physics in mind, what the hell were their engineers smoking when they designed the Type-10

we all want to know
Alliance and Lakon executives gassing by themselves when designing type-10 as it was a more seperate project. With the closer cooporation it was found that mixing the gasses caused design sensibilities as well as permanent brain rot, and thus a good ship was born before they all went ahead and now try to use the gas as ship fuel.

@@grifini27 railguns (if you consistently hit your shots) do higher dps than both, but will likely overheat your ship quickly, if you are ok with that you can do a lot more damage than a small hardpoint would normally do.
MC & BL are good, consistent, and efficient

I Personally love my Cheiftain. Granted it was quite soft when I picked it up. But after throwing a few reinforcements on board it became a very formidable tank.

The landing gear does make sense. Google bomber planes from ww2. Some also store their wheels in big parts of the enginge.
Also, chieftain's landing gear is hollow in the middle. The engine fits in between, immersionwise.

Yeah, the "ghost zone" is really accurate. I was surprised at how ridiculous the jump in price was between the Type-7/Dropship price point and the Python, which seemed to be the next logical step up!

A good combat ship that trades off rank grind for a modicum of engineering to cover it's more glaring weaknesses? Sounds like a fair trade off to me. At least it doesn't have a cargo scoop where it poops like the FDL.
Im just pissed that the engines arent gimbaled like on the keelback. Sure wouldve looked nice with 4 engine nacelles twisting around...

The chieftain is my favorite ship. I love the hard point placement and the utility and optional slots. I also love the appearance of it. It reminds me of the transport ship in halo 3 and the utilitarian design tickles my fancy.

oh yam, BTW you know by lore thrusters emit helium by-product form the fusion reaction in the power plant, not produce it on their own, that's the reason for the same thrust on the chieftain thrusters.

It doesn't require a rank grind like a FAS. And if you know how to pilot it, you can defeat a FAS.
I have a fully modded FAS. I literally have no reason to buy it. I think they just wantef a combat ship between the Vulture and FDL price wise that didn't require a rank grind.
The biggest surprise to me and many others is how cheap it is - I keep expecting Frontier to at least double its' price (which hopefully they don't do).
Or perhaps, it shows how overpriced the Gunship, Fer de Lance, Clipper and Python, in particular are, which i wouldn't mind getting price drops instead* :) .
(*Actually, I reckon most ships after the Asp Explorer are pretty overpriced, while similar many of the modules on dearer ships, including the Explorer and above are way too dear as well... :) .)

I put 4 x fixed guardian plasma chargers on a dropship for the feck of it, and well, the explosions look fantastic. But, they're not very good for PVE in has res. Guardian power plant was heaps of grind/materials, for crappy heat-issues.
Well i will cancel then the Data farm for the Power Plant (thx you Safed my day, i hope so)
The Cheif is pretty good for Xeno hunting, once you unlock the gauss cannon. Just add some remote flak. The Cheif is fast enough and maneuverable enough to run like hell when you take out a heart. Furthermore, the jump range is also decent. Uncomfortably decent...

Thank-you for the video Yarmiks. To be honest I didn't notice the forward and aft engine pods being the same except for the rear landing gear ;-)
A plausible (if this was real) explanation is the forward pods have additional equipment/systems in them and it's cheaper to make the same panels then a different ones.
The Chief's jump range is pretty good though, not amazing though obviously. I actually built and engineered a 50 LY Chieftain Explorer (yeah I know, "few screws loose" lol) equipped with shields and an SRV bay. I love the thing. Looks great and that BOOST SOUND, god damn!

Interesting. Took my battle conda to a CZ and the only ships that gave me a challenge this time are the chieftains. They seem to be op in comparison to their traditional brethren. Any one else notice this? Btw yeah I bought one and stuck engineered modules on, found that my fdl is more fun to fly still.
I have over 200 million credits, and my Chieftain and my FAS are the only ships I actually use.
I had an elite chieftain desimate my trade conda. Was a 12mil rebuy. Had to take it to an hrez for a while to restore my confidence a bit (to which I desimated many elite ships from FDLs to anaconda). Interesting experience.
Since every trader does this eventually I was just wondering what can it haul and what kind of range can I expect out of a fully stripped max cargo chieftain?

People may dislike this ship, but I've had the most fun with it in like 500 hours of ED gameplay.
No boring grinding for me. Mostly used for combat and some trading, very little exploring.
All rated A internals, no engineering and it helped me make enough money to buy a Type 7, a Krait Mk2, an Imperial Courier and an Anaconda, and pretty much max them out straight away, so yes, I'd say it was a good buy 😁
Okay, I only recently had a Yamiks video pelted into my face (thanks for the easy 90 mill Yamiks, love you xx) but I have rapidly come to realise that if im having a bad day all I need to do is turn on a video on this channel and smile my ass off!
The disappointing thing is this ship, and its siblings, look perfectly like your typical sci-fi dropship, yet none of them fit the task. It would've looked so cool using one of these in rescue missions.
You're forgetting that Lakon also made the Diamondback which was imo their nicest ship before the Chieftain. As far as lore is concerned, it makes sense that the Chieftain isn't like other Lakon ships since the Alliance's military R&D had a hand in it.
How exactly does the landing gear retract into the engines though. I mean there is no space for the landing gear, that is what I find the most stupid.
It doesn't retract into the engines. The landing gear actually folds up and sits on the underside of the engine pod, outside.
No, it doesn't. Look at the beginning of the video. There is way too much mass to be on the outside. Only the landing gear pad is on the outside, the strut is on the inside. It makes no sense. As a pilot, I can tell you that if landing gear folded up into the engines it would cause massive problems.
I get that it doesn't need air as such, but thrusters would still need an oxidizer, and if it isn't kept within the engine housing then it would be supplied through the "wings". What I am saying is that there is no way that a thruster would be so small as to allow that entire landing gear module to retract into it. Even if the fuel/oxidizer tanks are not within that housing, there is still too much thruster mass - even from what you can see from the back - to allow for the gear to retract.
Or does the fuel and oxidizer just magically teleport into the thrusters that are only a foot long? That is the only way for it to be possible. Even if they thrusters were shorter than they appear to be, and the fuel wasn't in the housing, the piping to supply the fuel would still be in the way.
A foot long? Uh the Chieftain (and the rest of the ships in ed) are fuck huge. Go google the scales of these ships. You dont use “a foot long” as a measurement with these ships lol

I'm running an older cup, but got a 1080, with the rift.
I'm only up to FSD grade 3, and I'm getting 22 ly with a heavy combat build, imho the jump range is pretty good for a combat oriented ship. Drifts like there's no tomorrow with military grade composites and several hull/module reinforcements, but taking down an expert (weak, I know) conda was pretty easy, it feels like a fighter when flying, and I've only had to hit the SCBs a few times because it can stay out of most NPC firing arcs with some well timed boosts. I've barely touched my vette since picking this thing up. It will pancake if you're not careful during planetary landings, even my vette seems to stop the drop faster. Now, I don't know about anyone else, but it looks like a guppy to me, until it's time to land and it turns into a dog taking a shit.

Yeah, Lakon needs to work on designing cock-pits for their combat ships, all that glass is great for exploration, but absolutely terrible for hull tanks
Bought it yesterday after grinding for hours in a hazres to get the last 3 mil i needed. Now ive done more grinding in my vulture and put 8 mil in upgrades in it. Im proud to say that this thing kicks ass. Major ass. Now i just need to grind the fucking fed ranks and save up for a corvette and i will be a god tier bounty hunter
This thing rocks with Frag Cannons, just FYI. The Spinal-mounted Large Hardpoints make it very easy to lead targets for huge hits at close range. Contrast with Fer De Lance which has its big gun slung underneath, as well as a hull that blocks your view, and honestly, I'll take the Chieftain of the FDL any day.
I want to try Advanced Rapid-Fire Plasma Accelerators when I unlock them, hopefully the Distributor can handle it, I have 3Small 1MED overcharged Burst that work fine with 3 pips into weapons.
Had a NPC Elite Chieftain drag me out of super cruise, omg this thing was tough slog, got my mod'd FDL down to one shield ring, it was a tank, took its shields down quick, but omg it was a slog, so impressed, I parked up my FDL traded in my Vulture and got one of these bad boys, not even fully engineered it rocks, just from a nav bouy. grabbed half a million in less than half hour, I shit you not. Once I get the other "materials" to fully engineer my multi cans this will be a pleasure to take into a RES, or anywhere, and the rebuy is SWEET........
The Lakon C-series allways reminds me of a Starfurry which did like a billion crunches

At the risk of becoming highly unpopular, I actually own and use the Type-10 more than any other ship. I can't quite explain why I like it, but I know for sure it isn't that god damn spoiler. I have no idea what they were thinking with that, i'm just glad I don't have to look at it when flying!
I'd love to transition to a fer de lance if the cockpit view wasn't so abysmal and depressing. I think I'll stick with my Lakon lawsuit
Great round up on the Chieftain. But I remember a ship just like it in Elite. More accurately, Elite Frontier. The ship was called "The Lifter" And gess what, it was a small, and cheep freighter. No weapons, and the 4 engens on the end of the wing's rotaited to become landing geer. To me, the ship make's sence to be maid by Laycon, they just took an old designe, put on new engen's, and armed it as far as the designe alow's.
But then, The Alliance is faimus for using old ship's in their fleet?

So many people having trouble with wings or spoilers on a ship. Nobody told them that these ships, despite any logic of spacefaring, are capable (or will be capable) of entering atmospheres. Now then is everyone that stupid that they don't get it?
I myself never understood the notion of a spaceship entering the atmosphere (or landing on a moon even) being "normal". Space ships are that, space ships. I don't expect a naval vessel to crawl onto land or fly away either so wtf...
Imagine the unnecessary cost and tech going into making huge a** battleships (star wars star destroyer even, hell) all capable of landing on planets... instead of making ships NOT capable of doing that, no heat shielding for entry, no extreme amounts of thrusters to keep that few hundred million tons of metal afloat and instead making proper spaceships meant for shipping in space and making dedicated landing ships, shuttles mind ya for that purpose instead?

This ship has become my favorite.I am nearly fully engineered and I find it to be quite a formidable ship. Certainly not a hard core face tanker....hence its superior speed and nimble movement.
Chieftan is basically the FAS with a larger profile, even costs around the same to outfit. Stealth PA Builds will probably be the way people play these in Competitive PvP. My big issue with the ship is the fac tthe drives get hit so easy, so far the two players i've fought that were flying them lost their drives from stay multicannon rounds, which was never an issue in the FAS. Even so it's a tough bastard and it has enough hull to drop a heatsink and make it through a reboot repair

The fact the only the rear nacelles pivot on landing seriously bugs me. Without even going into the whole where is that landing gear being stored!!

I actually found the Chieftain comparable to the FDL. It is for Hull Tankers what the FDL is for Shield Tankers. When I used it, I was doing things that my FDL would struggle to do.
ive done full hull tank build on chieftain, but i couldnt get over those two useless small hardpoints ruining the whole combat balancing for me. In shieldless hulltank build why do i want to have some underutilized small hardpoints under different fire group while im under heavy fire? And fixed harpoints convergence is far from good. So I went back to FAS.
Yeah, I'm enjoying my Chieftain a lot. It's not quite as lethal as my FDL, but it's pretty close and a lot more fun to fly...

I've got 2 fixed large mc's and 3 enforcer cannons on my chieftain (topside). That pushes 130 DPS. ( a little under 20 per enforcer cannon and 37 or so per multicannon.
It's the best dakka machine ever.
on the lower class 2 slot i've got a hammer rail with whatevermajig cascade against scb's.
