***** fucken champion, thanks
All I can say is thanks to all of you who put this video together. This has been the most useful thing in helping me pick out speakers. Props!!
Swamp Thang all the way!! Smoothest, most even and balanced out of all of them!
The absolutely best shootout comparison I have seen...well done
I bought two Swamp Thangs based on this video and I love 'em. The EVM 12L, Eminence Swamp Thang and Jensen P12N all sound great to my half deaf ears....
Thanks Laney, Marshall and especially Zildjian.

this is a repost
Swamp Thang and Greenback sound very similar, almost interchangeable.
Not to my ears ...
Not a repost to your ears?
Thanks so much for posting this. Speakers are such an important part of finding a personal tone, and they rarely get the exposure they deserve! Great job!
For me the best is the Electro-Voice EVM12L.
And I do not mean just for this excellent video.
I have some speakers that appear in this video, and others such as WGS, and Jensen Blackbird (very good, by the way).
The Celestion V30 has never seemed like a good speaker, and less fame he has.
The V30 sounds very hollow, sharp look synthetic. Plastic.
The EV balanced sounds. The low frequency sound compact and no mess. The midrange... sound full. And the highs are not harsh or synthetic.
It is more expensive than the V30 or Greenback, but also has more than twice the power of the V30 for example. A single Electro-Voice in a good box and not need any more.
greetings
i know your comment is a long time ago, but can you tell me which speakers are "the loudest"?
i have a small amp which starts distorting early and i would like to compensate that with a loud speaker to keep the amp volume low.
@@MrKnisterable celestion v30 sounds like one of the loudest and cutting through speakers. but if you don't have enough clean Headroom in your amp, the best thing to do would be to just change the amp.
@@MrKnisterable An EV has a sensitivity of 103 db, blowing anything other speaker away in terms of sensitivity
Really enjoyed this geeky speaker demo and others like it. While it does a nice job of showcasing tones, it also makes you realize the importance of trying different speakers with different rigs and hands. A case in point is the Tone Tubby 40/40. I'm currently experimenting with a rash of speakers for use in a newly designed combo and this has been - so far - one of the models I've tried. It sounds weak and anemic in this demo but terrific in person through our prototype amp at the volumes I was testing. All of the variables were again..different. Also, speakers need break-in times as well (hemp cones benefit from 40 hrs so I'm told!). Love these online demos though: it's way fun to go back and forth with all these models to listen to all the varying characteristics. What a great time we live in!
Nice to be able to hear so many speakers so quickly back-to-back. I decided many years ago that the V-30's sounded much better than anything else to me. This video just confirmed it. None came close to the amount of clarity & punch that they have. Also, everything else seems to have a certain amount of 'harshness' in the lower or upper mids compared to the V-30's.
Celestion G12H 30, Greenback and Vintage 30 are the best to my ears.
+konnektlive Funny you said that because this demo made me buy two v30's and a greenback. My brother bought a v30 because of this demo too. No regrets here!
Interesting, and well done. Thanks!
For those watching this, keep in mind that your own experience with these same speakers might be vastly different. Your pickups, amp, tubes, cab, mic, strings, etc. all affect the sound. I've got Golds in one of my Fenders and I love them, but would have a completely different opinion of them if I based it on this video (I thought it sounded more "grating" than "great" here). Other speakers that sounded sweet in this video might sound awful in other set-ups. Great way to get an overall idea, though.
For me, it was the EV 12L and the Alnico Gold's! I think using both in a combination setup would be killer! Maybe the EV's on the bottom and the Gold's in the top of a Mesa cab!

This video is very nice from Rivera amplification! Generally speaking, the speakers are kinda forgotten when it comes to excellence in guitar amplification.
God knows why, since there is a huge difference between different brands of speakers, and also, even, speakers of the same brand!
There isn’t a lot of videos in RUclips showcasing the difference between speakers, so thanks again!
I like that Eminence swamp honestly. Always have. Just has that soul.
Love the Greenback, the G12H30, the Eminence Tonker, the JBL, and the EV all the most. Vintage 30 too.
The Celestions - the T75 and Greenback in particular - and the Jensen wipe the floor with everything else.
one of the best Celestion speaker comparisons ever. Great work.
Great video. It's amazing how dramatic the differences are - it's not made up!
Thanks a lot for this fantastic test, that's all I ever wanted - to actually hear the difference between the speakers itself, under the same conditions, even the riff played!
Thumb up!
I like the Celestion Greenback best. The EV12-L was also very good. The Jensen P12N was consistent as usual.

thank all of you for you comments and ratings!!!
Thanks for posting this demo. Its amazing to me how much some of the speakers I liked the sound of for rhythm playing fell apart a bit for lead, and some of the ones that sounded so great on lead, were the ones I liked I least during rhythm playing. I would love to hear the same type demo with some sparkly, and close to break up cleans (which is where I do most of my playing).
Timbertea I hear you nine years later, ha. I suppose a two channel, foot switched amp with separate EQs or tone controls on each channel goes a long way, and perhaps a speaker mix. My Traynor YCV40 has a great clean with the Celestion Seventy 80, but I plan to add a more searing extension cab for lead solos, using an extra Celestion G12T-75 I have.
The internet needs more videos like this one. With more QUALITY of sound and musician.
this is probably the best tone comparison I've yet seen on RUclips
What an excellent job you did of this! I'm a Greenback guy myself. And funny, in a blind hearing test it was my favourite.
Thanks. You just saved me 10 years.
V30
thank you....for playing the same riff each time with no pedals so we could really hear the difference \m/
I want to thank Rivera Amps for doing this test and making it public.
Great job on the sound test comparison!
Here's some list pricing (referenced from Parts Express) on 7 of the woofers being tested in the video...
CELESTION
- Vintage 30 : $215
- G12H 70th Anniversary : $220
- G12 EVH 12 : $265
- Seventy 80 : $120
- G12 Gold : $440
EMINENCE
- Patriot Swamp Thang : $94.99
- Red Coat The Tonker : $99.99
Fantastic video! #1 Electro voice. #2 Greenbacks...
This is great!!
Very happy to see the Greenback and Vintage 30 rise to the top. I thought the Celestion Gold would have sounded better, perhaps on clean tones it would.
Listened to many speaker comparisons and there is a broader range of lower hz tones coming through on the gh12h30 I totally love the overall tone best from all I've heard hard to believe no one else is hearing the tasty tones I'm hearing. Have been very happy with the G12 Vintage it may have more cut and presence but from an overall perspective I could listen to the gh12h30 all day. Oh, thank you very much your testing videos are the best!

Great vid - I guess the mystical part is how some speakers stay dead clean at volume (EV), while others respond in a nice, squishy, interactive and counter-intuitive way to your EQ settings and overall output level (Greenback, Blue/Gold Alnico). So what sounds nice through a dead clean speaker at high volume sounds like mush through a squishy one, and what sounds warm through a mushy one sounds sterile & too clean/fizzy through a clean one.
Jensen P12N then the EV thick plate. Opinions?
I liked the Swamp Thang
+Michael McWilliams I have a set in my '67 Bassman and they sound great clean, fuzzed out to the max or overdriven. The JBL sounded nice too ..
I ended up buying one for my combo amp and I love it.
Same here. :)
K100 always impresses me in these shootouts. Maybe I gotta try one. G12M70 is very underrated as well.
+Josh Feierman I liked that one too
Fantastic overview. Thanks for taking the time and effort.
Riveraprod rocks!
Man I've watched this video a few times and replayed speakers back and forth. To me the V30 was better than any of the other speakers. Greenback was nice too but not quite as full sounding. I could do without the tone tubby speakers.
I hear a consistency with the Alnico magnets, they they seem to be much richer in the midrange & bass but retain that smooth break up. The Alnico Gold & EVM 12L are my favs here. Thanks for the upload.
This may been a pain in the ass to get all of those speakers record and play the same licks over and over again . But, now I know I love the greenback so thank you so much for doing it.This how all a/b test need to be done.
Great job. Eminence Tonker and Jensen P12 Alnico sounded nice.
The lead tone in this video convinced me to buy the Swamp Thang, and I don't regret it. It had the thick chunky sound I wanted for leads.
Amazing how much different speakers affect the tone.
I think that the original EVM 12L sounds the best out of all of them. I'm even more glad that I have one now...
Well done on the shoot out. Would love to see you guys do more like this! Thanks!
What a helpful and productive video! This is what the net should be all about.
Thanks so much Rivera.Great job.
The guitar, the guitar pickups, the string gauge, the stomp boxes, the amp, the tubes, the cabinet, and the speakers... there are a lot of things we guitar players have to have in mind in the search of the perfect tone. It is damn expensive and it takes years!!
Thank You. I couldn't agree more. The ones you listed have a sparkle or sizzle to them. To my ears the top two are the Swamp Thang and Jensen followed by the others you mentioned.
Cheers.
eminence swamp thing!! so good to hear what the celestions cannot!
While that riff will ring out in my head for days....Thanks for the great Demo, very educational
Swap Thang kicks ass!
Vintage 30 will get you through the mix, definitely the best for lead.
FINALLY!!!! A REAL ACCURATE TONE COMPARISON. Thank you! For what it's worth, I have tried many of these speakers and I can tell you this shootout is accurate. I agree that the volume on the amp was left alone because it shows what you are going to get from the wattage of the amp.
ie: If you mix 2 or more speakers you NEED to know how they will mix volume-wise. It would be disappointing to mix an EV or V30 with a TT if you didn't want that kind of mismatch mix-wise. Singly they are both nice.
Fantastic demo!!!!! Thanks for taking the time to do this.
My favourites gotta be K100, Swamp Thang and V30 for this sound. Though I play a strat so not sure how would that change with single coils. Really nice demo!
liked the vintage 30 ,Greenback and Jensen P12N Alnico.
Tone tubby [Aaaarrrhhh] not worth the money.
I would agree Cpt Darling
This is why mixing and matching speakers in cabinets is so fun.
This is an awesome test. I wish more tests were like this. I think the Vintage 30 and the T75 please me the most. Even though I own those two speakers and still trying to be unbiased; the Vintage 30 and the T75 work for me.
im partial to the jensen lead tones, and the swamp thing rhythm....i would prob pair those two together for that particular amp!!!
I have a Crate Red Voodoo cabinet ,the Sammy Hagar unit with Vintage 30's and I can plug a 15 watt crappy solid state in that thing and it sounds like a million bucks ,that cabinet has the best tone ever.Sounds amazing with any tube head.
I've changed my mind to be honest. 75's are super tight blistering metal machines. Great for modern death metal. I've rekindled my love for my g12t75's :)
Do you hear how the Greenback in particular sings beautifully ? Pay attention.
Actually, it is a 12-L. However, I forgot that the person who installed it said it initially wouldn't fit, but he got it in there somehow. I think he moved the fretboard forward a bit, but I am not sure. It's been over 20 years ago. By the way, I checked out your videos, and you play great. I still use that amp all the time. Thank you.
This is a great Demo! They all have unique character. But just based on this demo, the speakers that seem to require the least "fixing in the mixing" would be the Vintage 30 (Bright, forward), the EVM12L (Warm but articulate), and the PN12 (Scooped, but in a usable way). The others seem like they would need some EQ-ing to get them to speak in a mix. Then again, put those other speakers together with a different guitar/amp combo, and the results may be different.
Freaky... That is exactly my opninion as well. Two of the three speakers are expensive... The Vintage 30 is a better bang for the buck...
I have an oversized 4x12 loaded with 70/80's that I always thought sounded pretty good although a lot of people dismiss them as crap. My Mesa Rectoverb sounds pretty good plugged into them and most people think it sounds good until it comes up in conversation.
I like the Vintage 30's so much I now own 2 of them and my brother owns 1. We're building speaker cabs this weekend.
I've never heard about that K-100 but it sounds very good, thanks for the comparison
Disappointing was the gold and tone tubby's. Surprising was the jenson. EVM12L rules as expected.
This is the best video on youtube. Thank you! You've helped with the eternal question ... "Which speakers do I want???"
I'll recommend you to everyone I know.
Finally a Speaker Shoot out Where they ACTUALLY SOUND DIFFERENT...Every time someone tries to do a VS Comparison They are using Tons of Compression Tons of Reverb Tons of Gain and Every Speaker Sounds Just Slightly Different That Way.....How ever This Clip Proves That the Celestion Vintage 30 is My Sound....
I think what really stands out here is just how good the Rivera is! Honestly, the amp just sounds gorgeous.
Yep... awesome amp... yep...
Oh, and so are some of the speakers!
Always comes back to Celestion Greenbacks for me.
do you remember what year that EVM12L was?
Here in Brazil the JBL PW7 is a great and affordable choice, since the american speakers are insanely expensive. Nice response on highs and very powerful base lines
Alot of thought goes into speakers , but the thing that is often overlooked is that it is the tube( PREAMP AND POWER AMP ) which accounts for 95% of distortion in amplified guitar tone . The speaker only really distorts at HIGH LEVELs.
Good guitar tone is about getting IT ALL the way you like it . But really ITS THE TUBES .
Great vid thanks
Thank you Rivera for this enlightening shootout!
Some sound great for rhythm but no so great for soloing...and visa-versa. That's why I like to play through two 212 cabs that are each loaded with different speakers. One cab has 2 Celestion Classic Lead 80's which are very clear & articulate, the other cab has 2 Celestion Silver Series which are very warm. But there are so many other variables too: different cab sizes/designs, guitars, amps, & room acoustics will all affect the sound.
JBL was most balanced EV and Jensen alnico were good too, they didn't over emphasize the unpleasant jagged nature of the amps settings. Here is a tip that most players miss' DISTORTION SOUNDS LIKE CRAP UNLESS ITS SMOOTH and trying to fix it after recording doesn't work
I think the clips should have been volume matched and with the gain listed so that people are aware that some speakers are less efficient than others but a quiet speaker on here is always going to sound worse even though on record once compensated for it might actually sound amazing.
+louderthangod Very good point. It's very easy to confuse volume with good tone. I listen for compression and evenly EQ'd characteristics.
my favorite speakers are " the quiet ones" you r spot on. none of these.... but the ones i use are very inefficient but there in lies the beauty of them.
Low frequency will affect the mid "high" frequency very much! Guitar speakers will have a typical qtc of 0.50 and above. A resonance frequency of 70 hz. And they are NOT recomended for ported cabinets at all (unless what i stated a correct constructed cabinet. Probably really large ones in excess of 100 liters) . You are absolutely right that open back or infinitive cabinet (A correct constructed closed cabinet ) are the ones to choose. for a shootout miking in room response would be better.
Crunch
Ceramic: Celestion G12T75
Alnico: Jensen P12N
Lead
Ceramic: Celestion G12T75 / K100
Alnico: Celestion Alnico Gold
They didn't show it on this video, but the Swamp Thing and the Man-o-War would sound really good together.
The Seventy 80 and the Electro Voice are similar - both a bit hifi - some would like some would not. The one making the biggest _statement_ for me was the Jensen, could be inspirational.
This test made me realize that the speaker really isn't that important. Though the sound and volume changed, in the end all sounded like electric guitars into a amp. I would use any one of these speakers, I could make any one of them sing. For my ears, buds, and this test, if I didn't already have speakers and they all these had the same price I would buy the EV, but they all would do.
Oddly, the Celestion G12T-75 and the Seventy 80 sounded kinda balanced in the video, and the Tone Tubby, which is kinda boutique, sounded awful (to me anyway)
I really like this comparison. I bet if this was a completely blind test, most people wouldn't pick another one different than they think they liked. So much versity here. For anyone looking for a cabinet, its always best to talk to a mfg of the speakers and find out which one they recommend based on what you want. Then, most importantly, go blow up your local music store trying all the cabinets.
I still think the g12h30 is the best all around speaker I've played and I've played a lot of them
Thanks a lot for posting this.
I always feeled ashamed because everyone said my Celestion Seventy 80 were cheap, but now that I've done a blind test (not reading the names) I cann really say I like it's tone better than any other.
..even though the Alnico Gold was quite fine too - but is a little (!) more pricey :D
I dig the Greenback and surpisingly the Jensen...what a killer demo!
@rarebikes88 Thanks for the idea to turn away form the monitor and listen blind to the model numbers. I scrolled down so I could replay specific samples without seeing the names. My favorites don't matter - but I was very surprised that the EV 12L wasn't among them; I've been listening to them in my own rig for 325 years!
Thought the Vintage 30's had the best "Modern Tone" The Golds and The Greenbacks sounded great for a more vintage sound. This test is Great but it could be done better... with about what like 10 different power amps that were all the same with different wattage output. Still, best comparison video I've seen yet.
Cool video! cant really tell unless I"m there myself playing.its more than just sound though"..its also the FEEL and response". the celestions did seem to have more variety of character in the tones, and somewhat brighter by my ears? good vid! great to see there are companies out there like RIVERA that take the time to experiment to find the FACTS!..GREAT JOB!
Celestion 70/80 , Alnico Gold, Greenback's, Jensen P12n Alnico, EVM 12L
all sound best to my ears. Hard to pick a favorite so guess i'll have to buy a set of
each :)
.
If you listen to a cab straight in it's to ice pick but if you listen to the same cab off to the side it sounds way better! .. take the mic that's in the center and put at a angle off from the dust cover all those will sound great!
For my reference :) V30 0:06 and 2:59, Greenback 0:39 and 3:27, Swamp Thang 1:30 and 4:47
