I bought two Swamp Thangs based on this video and I love 'em. The EVM 12L, Eminence Swamp Thang and Jensen P12N all sound great to my half deaf ears.... Thanks Laney, Marshall and especially Zildjian.
Thanks so much for posting this. Speakers are such an important part of finding a personal tone, and they rarely get the exposure they deserve! Great job!
My favourites gotta be K100, Swamp Thang and V30 for this sound. Though I play a strat so not sure how would that change with single coils. Really nice demo!
Nice to be able to hear so many speakers so quickly back-to-back. I decided many years ago that the V-30's sounded much better than anything else to me. This video just confirmed it. None came close to the amount of clarity & punch that they have. Also, everything else seems to have a certain amount of 'harshness' in the lower or upper mids compared to the V-30's.
Really enjoyed this geeky speaker demo and others like it. While it does a nice job of showcasing tones, it also makes you realize the importance of trying different speakers with different rigs and hands. A case in point is the Tone Tubby 40/40. I'm currently experimenting with a rash of speakers for use in a newly designed combo and this has been - so far - one of the models I've tried. It sounds weak and anemic in this demo but terrific in person through our prototype amp at the volumes I was testing. All of the variables were again..different. Also, speakers need break-in times as well (hemp cones benefit from 40 hrs so I'm told!). Love these online demos though: it's way fun to go back and forth with all these models to listen to all the varying characteristics. What a great time we live in!
For me the best is the Electro-Voice EVM12L. And I do not mean just for this excellent video. I have some speakers that appear in this video, and others such as WGS, and Jensen Blackbird (very good, by the way). The Celestion V30 has never seemed like a good speaker, and less fame he has. The V30 sounds very hollow, sharp look synthetic. Plastic. The EV balanced sounds. The low frequency sound compact and no mess. The midrange... sound full. And the highs are not harsh or synthetic. It is more expensive than the V30 or Greenback, but also has more than twice the power of the V30 for example. A single Electro-Voice in a good box and not need any more. greetings
i know your comment is a long time ago, but can you tell me which speakers are "the loudest"? i have a small amp which starts distorting early and i would like to compensate that with a loud speaker to keep the amp volume low.
@@MrKnisterable celestion v30 sounds like one of the loudest and cutting through speakers. but if you don't have enough clean Headroom in your amp, the best thing to do would be to just change the amp.
Thanks for posting this demo. Its amazing to me how much some of the speakers I liked the sound of for rhythm playing fell apart a bit for lead, and some of the ones that sounded so great on lead, were the ones I liked I least during rhythm playing. I would love to hear the same type demo with some sparkly, and close to break up cleans (which is where I do most of my playing).
Timbertea I hear you nine years later, ha. I suppose a two channel, foot switched amp with separate EQs or tone controls on each channel goes a long way, and perhaps a speaker mix. My Traynor YCV40 has a great clean with the Celestion Seventy 80, but I plan to add a more searing extension cab for lead solos, using an extra Celestion G12T-75 I have.
Listened to many speaker comparisons and there is a broader range of lower hz tones coming through on the gh12h30 I totally love the overall tone best from all I've heard hard to believe no one else is hearing the tasty tones I'm hearing. Have been very happy with the G12 Vintage it may have more cut and presence but from an overall perspective I could listen to the gh12h30 all day
Thank You. I couldn't agree more. The ones you listed have a sparkle or sizzle to them. To my ears the top two are the Swamp Thang and Jensen followed by the others you mentioned. Cheers.
Thanks a lot for this fantastic test, that's all I ever wanted - to actually hear the difference between the speakers itself, under the same conditions, even the riff played! Thumb up!
I hear a consistency with the Alnico magnets, they they seem to be much richer in the midrange & bass but retain that smooth break up. The Alnico Gold & EVM 12L are my favs here. Thanks for the upload.
@rarebikes88 Thanks for the idea to turn away form the monitor and listen blind to the model numbers. I scrolled down so I could replay specific samples without seeing the names. My favorites don't matter - but I was very surprised that the EV 12L wasn't among them; I've been listening to them in my own rig for 325 years!
@ Perseoermagno90. 👍THANK YOU VERY MUCH for taking the time to list the times and model of Speakers I’m here because I have a c.1990 teal striped Peavey Bandit, and I’m trying to figure out which Celestion is closely related to the Scorpion in there. I don’t see any comparisons yet on RUclips. Am I way off by thinking that a Scorpion is like a Celestion Greenback?

Oh, thank you very much your testing videos are the best!
This is great!! Very happy to see the Greenback and Vintage 30 rise to the top. I thought the Celestion Gold would have sounded better, perhaps on clean tones it would.
This may been a pain in the ass to get all of those speakers record and play the same licks over and over again . But, now I know I love the greenback so thank you so much for doing it.This how all a/b test need to be done.
For me, it was the EV 12L and the Alnico Gold's! I think using both in a combination setup would be killer! Maybe the EV's on the bottom and the Gold's in the top of a Mesa cab!
I'd like to ask this: Maybe perhaps the speaker enclosure did not do wonders for many of the speakers? I mean the EVM12L is described as anything but this muddy...And the V30 seems to be in a class above all the others. Maybe this cab complements the V30 and greenback a bit more?
Actually, it is a 12-L. However, I forgot that the person who installed it said it initially wouldn't fit, but he got it in there somehow. I think he moved the fretboard forward a bit, but I am not sure. It's been over 20 years ago. By the way, I checked out your videos, and you play great. I still use that amp all the time. Thank you.
Great vid - I guess the mystical part is how some speakers stay dead clean at volume (EV), while others respond in a nice, squishy, interactive and counter-intuitive way to your EQ settings and overall output level (Greenback, Blue/Gold Alnico). So what sounds nice through a dead clean speaker at high volume sounds like mush through a squishy one, and what sounds warm through a mushy one sounds sterile & too clean/fizzy through a clean one.
@Riveraprod bro this is sweet, this demonstration helped me alot.. Bro can you put up the tabs on those riffs you where playing there,it sounds killer..
I'm kinda with the majority, the Vintage 30 seems like it has the most cut and presence and overall best sound. I wonder how the ToneTubby San Rafael would sound though with the gain and volume of a 50 or 100 watt really pushing it. Might actually have a cool compressed sound since it is low wattage,
This video is very nice from Rivera amplification! Generally speaking, the speakers are kinda forgotten when it comes to excellence in guitar amplification. God knows why, since there is a huge difference between different brands of speakers, and also, even, speakers of the same brand! There isn’t a lot of videos in RUclips showcasing the difference between speakers, so thanks again!
thanks for the great comparisons!!! I have a couple of questions though if you dont mind. Were all the speakers broken in or were they fresh out of the box? Also I have a Laney TT50 Combo which came with the Celestion classic lead 80 which I love. I just got a Laney 112 extension cab with a Celestion 70/80 in it, but I dont like it (its too dark). Do you think the Eminence Red Fang 12" 50w would work well with the classic lead 80? or are they just too different?
Alot of thought goes into speakers , but the thing that is often overlooked is that it is the tube( PREAMP AND POWER AMP ) which accounts for 95% of distortion in amplified guitar tone . The speaker only really distorts at HIGH LEVELs. Good guitar tone is about getting IT ALL the way you like it . But really ITS THE TUBES . Great vid thanks
Great job on the sound test comparison! Here's some list pricing (referenced from Parts Express) on 7 of the woofers being tested in the video... CELESTION - Vintage 30 : $215 - G12H 70th Anniversary : $220 - G12 EVH 12 : $265 - Seventy 80 : $120 - G12 Gold : $440 EMINENCE - Patriot Swamp Thang : $94.99 - Red Coat The Tonker : $99.99
Blue, I'm using this speaker in a 4x12 with a Celestion T75 and some quieter S50's. So, I'm afraid I can't tell you what it sounds like on its own in the room. And when I record, I usually put the Swamp on the left and the 75 on the right. Honestly, I have no idea what it sounds like clean on its own. What I can tell you is that this speaker has a ton of bass, and a lot of lower to medium mids. And it does not break up.
I've got 4 Celestion T75's in my 1960 cab. I've got to say that I really dig both the Swamp Thing and EVM12L. Just googled the price of the EVM's... looks like that purchase would be a long long way away. :O
Interesting, and well done. Thanks! For those watching this, keep in mind that your own experience with these same speakers might be vastly different. Your pickups, amp, tubes, cab, mic, strings, etc. all affect the sound. I've got Golds in one of my Fenders and I love them, but would have a completely different opinion of them if I based it on this video (I thought it sounded more "grating" than "great" here). Other speakers that sounded sweet in this video might sound awful in other set-ups. Great way to get an overall idea, though.
This is great! I'm in the market to change the stock speakers in my amp, what would be even cooler if you have the original recordings of each speaker so you can mix them together to get a vague idea what they might sound like in a 2 x combo. Is the original audio recorded through the Mics available? I'm thinking of adding Celestion V30 and a T75 in a 2 x 12 combo, although I did like the Eminence Swamp Thang as something close to the tone of the V30.
I really like the Celestion Alnico Gold and the Tone Tubby Ceramic 40/40 I do like a good fuzzy voice. Its a shame they left the volume the same for all the different speakers the San Raphael has to be pushed a bit more before it opens up.
+konnektlive Funny you said that because this demo made me buy two v30's and a greenback. My brother bought a v30 because of this demo too. No regrets here!
Great demo. Although I didn't like it, I can see why pros like the V30 - I imagine it really cuts through the mix. I prefered the G12h30 though.,, and the jensen!
Low frequency will affect the mid "high" frequency very much! Guitar speakers will have a typical qtc of 0.50 and above. A resonance frequency of 70 hz. And they are NOT recomended for ported cabinets at all (unless what i stated a correct constructed cabinet. Probably really large ones in excess of 100 liters) . You are absolutely right that open back or infinitive cabinet (A correct constructed closed cabinet ) are the ones to choose. for a shootout miking in room response would be better.
Cool video! cant really tell unless I"m there myself playing.its more than just sound though"..its also the FEEL and response". the celestions did seem to have more variety of character in the tones, and somewhat brighter by my ears? good vid! great to see there are companies out there like RIVERA that take the time to experiment to find the FACTS!..GREAT JOB!
Some sound great for rhythm but no so great for soloing...and visa-versa. That's why I like to play through two 212 cabs that are each loaded with different speakers. One cab has 2 Celestion Classic Lead 80's which are very clear & articulate, the other cab has 2 Celestion Silver Series which are very warm. But there are so many other variables too: different cab sizes/designs, guitars, amps, & room acoustics will all affect the sound.
Great Vid. Thanks for all the work. Greenback out in front followed by the V30 and G12H30. The P12N had an intriguing tone that can grow on you... ;-) The tubby's are definitely not my cup of tea.
This is an awesome test. I wish more tests were like this. I think the Vintage 30 and the T75 please me the most. Even though I own those two speakers and still trying to be unbiased; the Vintage 30 and the T75 work for me.
Do you know if the Celestion G12H 30W are 55 Hz or 75 Hz bass response? Thank You for a super comparison. It has really given me a lot of "knowledge" about how big of a difference the speaker makes in the sound of an amp/cabinet.
I have a Crate Red Voodoo cabinet ,the Sammy Hagar unit with Vintage 30's and I can plug a 15 watt crappy solid state in that thing and it sounds like a million bucks ,that cabinet has the best tone ever.Sounds amazing with any tube head.
I didnt mind the EV. I usually dont think of them for guitar speakers. I had the idea they were too bassy and just didnt sound right, but this one sounded good.
From the celestions, Vintage 30 was pretty good. Really loved the Seventy 80 though. I think the best overall was the swamp thang, and I hated the tone tubbys.
I think the clips should have been volume matched and with the gain listed so that people are aware that some speakers are less efficient than others but a quiet speaker on here is always going to sound worse even though on record once compensated for it might actually sound amazing.
my favorite speakers are " the quiet ones" you r spot on. none of these.... but the ones i use are very inefficient but there in lies the beauty of them.
good test...this vid help me to decide which use in replacement my mashall cab with g12t-75 with tls60 i just bought 2 vintage 30 and keep g12t-75 in made x configuration...wow surprise....nice tone !!! i recommande
@Riveraprod I think it was a very helpful video. However, When I'm trying out amps that have different power levels say a 30 and a 75 watt I turn them up until I have a good stage volume which is the same for both regardless of what they are capable of. Then It's easy to evaluate the tonal characteristics of each amp. This video isn't about the fact that one speaker is better than another. It's purpose is to show your customers what kind of tones they can get wit different speakers right?
What about the Eminence Wizard, Governor versus V30. I have the Governor and it sounds a little smoother, thicker with less high mids than the V30 to me.
I just looked up the Mesa Boogie Mk IV 1 x 12 inch Combo on Google and looked up what folks have to say about the old EVM 12-L. Now Electro Voice just has to be good but I guess what's it's all about is specialization. A 1 x 12 inch Combo is just about local pub use. Some Celestion drivers are multiple rock concert stage bass bins, if you're listening quite close and not real far, it affects what you hear cos of the power and distortion, as if you're real high power 100 yards away it matters!
i turned away from my computer and looked back when i heard the best sound, each time it was the green back? I did it a bunch of times and started the video in different places too. very awsome video comparison! how long it take you to do ?
Great video! This has been extremely helpful. I bet Louis is very tired of playing those same riffs over and over again...but that first rythm one was kinda catchy!
Celestion 70/80 , Alnico Gold, Greenback's, Jensen P12n Alnico, EVM 12L all sound best to my ears. Hard to pick a favorite so guess i'll have to buy a set of each :) .

Swamp Thang and Greenback sound very similar, almost interchangeable.
Not to my ears ...

I wish the vintage jbl d130 was used in this test !
Great video!! Were the celestions UK or Chinese made?
I really like the Celestion Alnico Gold and the Tone Tubby Ceramic 40/40 I do like a good fuzzy voice. Its a shame they left the volume the same for all the different speakers the San Raphael has to be pushed a bit more before it opens up.
Celestion G12H 30, Greenback and Vintage 30 are the best to my ears.
I liked the Swamp Thang
+Michael McWilliams I have a set in my '67 Bassman and they sound great clean, fuzzed out to the max or overdriven. The JBL sounded nice too ..
I ended up buying one for my combo amp and I love it.
Same here. :)
Great job. Eminence Tonker and Jensen P12 Alnico sounded nice.
@RNRDOLL Those brands are excellent, but you should also check out Engl, Hughes & Kettner, Koch, and Hiwatt.
I would so love to hear a clean test too. And 15" inch speakers also.
@jst601 Yeah, it sound very cool. I have Celestion s seventy/80 in my vox AD50VT and now i think that eminence can help me with tone...
Cool video! cant really tell unless I"m there myself playing.its more than just sound though"..its also the FEEL and response". the celestions did seem to have more variety of character in the tones, and somewhat brighter by my ears? good vid! great to see there are companies out there like RIVERA that take the time to experiment to find the FACTS!..GREAT JOB!
It has really given me a lot of "knowledge" about how big of a difference the speaker makes in the sound of an amp/cabinet.
i wish they put the mesa celestion black shadow in the mix. very underrated speaker
I have a Crate Red Voodoo cabinet ,the Sammy Hagar unit with Vintage 30's and I can plug a 15 watt crappy solid state in that thing and it sounds like a million bucks ,that cabinet has the best tone ever.Sounds amazing with any tube head.
@skylorz I mixed a Seventy/80 and a Sheffield 1230 (sounds like a well broke in greenback) in a 2x12) and it sounds amazing!
+louderthangod Very good point. It's very easy to confuse volume with good tone. I listen for compression and evenly EQ'd characteristics.
my favorite speakers are " the quiet ones" you r spot on. none of these.... but the ones i use are very inefficient but there in lies the beauty of them.
An awesome reference video, well planned and executed. Thanks a million !!
The lead tone in this video convinced me to buy the Swamp Thang, and I don't regret it. It had the thick chunky sound I wanted for leads.
Thanks. You just saved me 10 years.
V30
Disappointing was the gold and tone tubby's. Surprising was the jenson. EVM12L rules as expected.
good test...this vid help me to decide which use in replacement my mashall cab with g12t-75 with tls60
i just bought 2 vintage 30 and keep g12t-75 in made x configuration...wow surprise....nice tone !!!
i recommande
The Celestions - the T75 and Greenback in particular - and the Jensen wipe the floor with everything else.
I've never heard about that K-100 but it sounds very good, thanks for the comparison
You guys ever try any of the PMR custom hand built guitar speakers by PMR???? There's some on E bay....... REALLY powerful/fat voicing!!!!!!
They didn't show it on this video, but the Swamp Thing and the Man-o-War would sound really good together.
Thank you Rivera for this enlightening shootout!
thank you....for playing the same riff each time with no pedals so we could really hear the difference \m/
Please do it again with single coils and clean to bluesy tones
V30, EVM12L, K100... it would be interesting to hear some fanes ;)
@Riveraprod
Is there a clean version of this?
Maybe some funky rhythms - same speakers without the distortion.
Great video! This has been extremely helpful. I bet Louis is very tired of playing those same riffs over and over again...but that first rythm one was kinda catchy!
Celestion 70/80 , Alnico Gold, Greenback's, Jensen P12n Alnico, EVM 12L
all sound best to my ears. Hard to pick a favorite so guess i'll have to buy a set of
each :)
