The EVM12L, G12-65, and ‘88 Vintage 30 are all standouts to my ear. With my surprise favorite being the G12-65. Some that I didn’t like at all with just the close mic sounded much better to me when mixed with the room mic, something I would not have expected. (The G12H100 was one of those to the maximum.) Fantastic playing! Great riff (I mean since you’re playing it like 10,000 times you might as well have fun!) 😁 Thanks for this!
This might be my favorite of all your videos Johan... I just had to revisit it. Almost sounds like you've nailed the Accept, "Balls to the wall" sound here.
Excellent video! I don’t get the hate the G12M-70 gets from Celestion snobs on forums, one of the best sounding here in my opinion. With someone who actually knows how to dial in a tone that speaker sounds excellent! Great job Johan!

great demos JS!! those EV's really stand out, wonderful TONE!! liked the 12m-70s as well with a very differnet tone, but everyone has different ears. just different tools for different jobs. Cheers!!
I have the same cab he's using here and a jcm800 2205 head from the eighties. This video convinced me to swap out the old g12-t 75's for g-12 65's. All I can say is now when I mic up my amp it sounds just like it does in the room, which is what I was chasing. So, thanks Johan!

That 1989 G12-75 had such a great balance of tone. Nice chunky bottom with no flab, strongest mids for my ears. Right up through the range, I heard more colors coming out of that speaker than any other. I have that cabinet, in purple, I think 30th anniversary special with an EV that I could do without. Thanks to you I know what to try first.
Hi Johan! I am a proud owner of an old Park cabinet, probably from the late 70's. It has those G12-65 Celestions inside and with my 2204 JMP head they sound Killer. Just as in your demo they have a very pronounced, broad mid and not too sharp highs. It's very good combo for the Marshall amp which can be bright in highgain territory. I found actually the G1280 to be very pleasant also! It is a bit on the sharp side but in a good way and probably could do thrash and other heavier styles as well :) Keep on rocking! Cheers from Poland!
Okay so I listen to it one more time just to make sure those 1989 G12m -70 are way cool! The harmonics are fantastic! Your reviews are the best bro! keep going!
Yeah-for the most maligned speaker in the history of rock, (even more so than the 75) -I thought they were ok. I had a pair in an 81 Garnet combo and they were nice clean too. The '14 Classic Lead 80 kinda surprised me too how nice it sounded.
I personally did own an early 80's Marshall 1960B loaded with Celestion G12H100's from the late great metal/rock producer Chris Tsangarides. The cab sounded so huge that you could feel the sound in another room!
I'm not surprised that you like it that much. One of my best speakers that I carry. The classic lead is better than it sells. Word will eventually get out. Johan Rocks again!
The 1978 g1280 by a mile for me . It had a definition and clarity the others did not . It was also crisper and much more frim in the low end . The mids were more refined and articulate. It had that tight and defined low mid growl .
Superb!!! Ive been looking into getting an old EVM12 or 15L for guitar 1x cab. This is one deciding video: its sound is so clear but warm and rich. Im looking at a 1992 unit right now: THNX!!!!
G12m 70 wow, id like to go more in depth with this vs the g12 65 this one really impressed me and i think i like it the best out of the bunch! also Love Marshall Vintage g12 (v30) G12 65 G12t 75 old version (missing from this? ;P ) Love to see all 12" 80s celestions in a shoot out :D Thank you for always the best! - Bahrum
Thanks for demoing the G12H100's. I have some from the early 90's in my 2X12 cabs currently. 8 Ohms. They actually stack up pretty nicely in this video. I like the high end. Seems all the Chinese ones sound muddy, or is that just me?
Yeah the H100 is my favourite in this bunch. And the newer speakers sounds a bit more sterile. Not all are fully broken in but even after having done so they sound less spatially rich
The 2014 V30 will do it's thing plus sound like all the others with a little treble rolled off, making it far more versatile The G12 50 was a surprise..sounds good too. I would open the video with a quick demo of each speaker, say 4 seconds each, for a quick side by side, then do some longer demos. i would still keep them to 10 seconds or so.No need to go longer really. Overall great job..thanks very much ..you are thee historical Celestion demo resource.
Great A/B (C,D,E...) comparison Johan, thank you! I am piecing together my "dream" 4x12 Cab and I found (2) G12H-100s that I want to X with some v30s; my only concern is finding a decent pair of v30s that are affordable and not the new(er) imports. I've never heard that setup (2 V30s + 2 H-100s) in person, but judging by how each speaker sounds separately, and their respective freq. response/tone, I think it will be a killer combo!!! Deep and powerful bottom stage from the H100s and thickened mid and vibrant highs from the v 30s. The band I play in is pretty eclectic (i.e. eccentric), so I don't really stick to one "genre" - surf, punk, blues, melodic prog, stoner metal, whatever. I want a rig that will cover all the bases, being pushed by a Bugera TriRec 100w tube head, all Tung Sol tubes. What are your thoughts on this potential beast of a cab -- or do you have any alternative ideas (other than v30s) to compliment the (2) H-100s I'm putting there? Thanks again for the great vids, and Cheers!
Always come back to play this video time to time (now 2020). Close my eyes and listed for the speaker that speaks to me. It changes from time to time but have a few more favorites.
Hi Johan, really glad to see this vid (i'm a metal fan) and to see you have pick up a new V30 vs the Marshall one in your comparative ;). The only thing missing is a ...simple greenback G12M, as they were used a lot ! Retro voicing : G80, CL70, G65, G50 (i didn't know this last) Modern voicing : G12T75, V30 (All), G12K100 Unique : EVM 12L A bit of history : The G65 was the first celestion large cap speaker, made in order to increase and respond to volume demand in the beginning of the 80's. G70 : the next power evolution of the G-65 G12T-75 is a reworked version of the G-65, sonically different. It's with the V30, the standard for Marshall since a while. G80 : H magnet version of the G12-65 CL80 evolution of the G80 with a fiberglass cone, used in Mesa combos, labelled and revoiced black shadow. G12K100 : next power evolution of the G80 V30 are the only one in this comp to have small caps. EVM is a large cap, high fidelity speaker and was used in the first Mark I in replacement of the original Altec-Lansing 417-8H Series II. Just my 2 cents. Cheers !
this is an awesome speaker comparison. Great Job dude! I'm looking actually for some "new" speakers and your Videos help me a lot. Big Thanks. And keep on rocking. Greetings Marco :)
I think the most underrated speaker here is the 1982 G12-50, it sounds like it would cut through a mix really well and not sound too grating at the same time, has a good mid-push, especially with the close and room mic together.
Thanks for continuously exceeding our expectations. For me you can't beat an old k85.. or a first generation t75. The speakers I liked in this demo on the close mic I ended like others better with just the broom sound cheers from Canada.
This video made me buy today a circa 2004 4x12 loaded with G12H-100s ... I am likely to scavenge, since room for a 4 x 12 is nigh impossible to find in the house right now. Thanks Johan!
wow that g12m70 was my favorite by a mile. even though ive heard bad things about them that just goes to show you cant always go by others opinions. just curious what was your favorite speaker for this demo? great video man sorry if you've already answered that question
Wondering if the '14 V30 is really broken in? My winner for the whole thing was the '88 V30, so I'm wondering if the production/materials are that different, or if breaking it in makes THAT much of a difference.
have 1979 g12 65 in a jcm2000 dsl401...man what an improvement in sound for that judas priest maiden sound i was wanting but also,my own flavor mixed in as well.
problem is they all work different depending on the amp and even pickups !!! Vintage 30 is as always, seriously hard to beat (loves my Ibanez) although I do like and use the G12H and specifically the G12M with Les Pauls which also came as standard in one of my Marshall cabs. Given choice I would match a V30 with a G12M , plenty of head room for a 100 top head,
1st 1978 G12-80 2nd 1980 G12-65 3rd 1983 G12H100 Goes without saying that the 2014 models may not have smoothed themselves out yet. That '78 though, man...
+sickb2200 Thanks! Yeah it's beyond me why speakers aren't pre-broken in when sold. 80 hours is probably a year worth of rehearsals for many. Manufacturers like Scumback offers it for a small fee, but Celestion doesn't to my knowledge.
G12-65' or VERY early, vented magnet 75's are outstanding. I have an original quad of G12-80 with 4444 cones, at lower volumes, they're fat, open, and warm...once you give them the gas, they can be BRIGHT, an icepick I can't dial out with a strat. The G12-65's and early 75's are VERY similar...75's have a tighter bottom and are almost identical to 65's in the mids...both are fav's of Yngwie and Gary Moore
I am under a great impression of your overall work! Keep going! Could you please please please do a comparition video of MESA CELESTION C90 Clack Shadow speaker and similar Celestions to solve it`s mistery once for all? Greetings!
Your a clever guy searching for the right tone, couldn´t be blessed by all knowers of the problematic to get a good sound ! Go further with that delighting stuff !
Please help me , I bought a celestion classic lead 80 about 90 watt (2015) and I built a 2x12" Box so I have the oppurtunity for 2 speakers ! I made a switch which allows to A,B or AB , and i will give another speaker the chance to get into it, but I recently git no idea which speaker I should mix to it ? - I´m searching for classic Fendersounds , even some metal distortion sounds and some pure an warm clean sounds , I play some Strats, Tele ans Sg styles , P92 Pickups and I´m doing some progessiv blues projets, what speaker would you choose in my case ?
G1280, but with 444 cones is one of the most efficient speakers I’ve ever heard. They offer less coloration than the EVM IMO. The 1777 cones make it a completely different speaker that almost sounds like an EVM with more mids. My bassman 2x12 with 79’ 444 cone g1280s is louder than my 90s’ Ampeg 4x12 with two WGS ET65 and V30s in an x pattern. I love mixing speakers, but nothing seems to mix with a G1280 with 444 cones because of how loud it is. Maybe I should just get two more for a 4x12
I daresay you liked the G12M70, you seemed to let it ring out a bit more...but maybe your hands were tired after 11 swaps & 11 riff sessions! The Master Lead 30 comes with those in 4 ohm, going to put a patch in there so I can use it as a cab or head. I'm sure punchier low end can be found, but I always thought these had great classic rock and early metal tone. Thinking modded Jet City, a Valvestate Supreme, the ML30 for MIDS & an Ampeg SS70 quad tracked for metal mayhem.
Almost all of these speakers are useable at full volume , especially the maligned gt12-75 , the vintage 30 sounds decent at lower volumes , half volume and below and I think that’s why there so popular now , big difference in the older and newer vintage 30 though , I still like the g12-65 the best
Oh boy ...I chose the 2010 G12t- 75 , baby, what a surprise ....the cheaper ones ----yet .... 2010 super best this time...oooh.! yeah. Close shootout this time Johan! - we enjoy them!

Love to see all 12" 80s celestions in a shoot out :D
Thank you for always the best! - Bahrum
Thanks, Bahrum!
Kind of knew the brilliant v30 sound and the crappy ohne of the 75, but Boy do the 65 and 70 sound great (and the 50 bad)!
Great video, the G12H 100 is a amazing speaker.
The 2014 V30 will do it's thing plus sound like all the others with a little treble rolled off, making it far more versatile
The G12 50 was a surprise..sounds good too.
I would open the video with a quick demo of each speaker, say 4 seconds each, for a quick side by side, then do some longer demos. i would still keep them to 10 seconds or so.No need to go longer really.
Overall great job..thanks very much ..you are thee historical Celestion demo resource.
+svhorton Thanks for the tip man, I agree. The shorter each section is the clearer the big picture gets. Cheers Johan
The 2014 Celestion Vintage 30 had the biggest sound IMO! Chords sounded sweet, the E5(no 3rd) power chord sounded LaRgE!!
Thanks! I think that combination will work very well and be versatile enough to fit your different styles. Let me know how it works out! Cheers
Always come back to play this video time to time (now 2020). Close my eyes and listed for the speaker that speaks to me. It changes from time to time but have a few more favorites.
Glad yo hear it Jay!
Hi Johan,
really glad to see this vid (i'm a metal fan) and to see you have pick up a new V30 vs the Marshall one in your comparative ;). The only thing missing is a ...simple greenback G12M, as they were used a lot !
Retro voicing : G80, CL70, G65, G50 (i didn't know this last)
Modern voicing : G12T75, V30 (All), G12K100
Unique : EVM 12L
A bit of history :
The G65 was the first celestion large cap speaker, made in order to increase and respond to volume demand in the beginning of the 80's.
G70 : the next power evolution of the G-65
G12T-75 is a reworked version of the G-65, sonically different. It's with the V30, the standard for Marshall since a while.
G80 : H magnet version of the G12-65
CL80 evolution of the G80 with a fiberglass cone, used in Mesa combos, labelled and revoiced black shadow.
G12K100 : next power evolution of the G80
V30 are the only one in this comp to have small caps.
EVM is a large cap, high fidelity speaker and was used in the first Mark I in replacement of the original Altec-Lansing 417-8H Series II.
Just my 2 cents. Cheers !
dafxtone Thanks, really appreciate your feedback. Good point about the V30 voice coil size, is kinda interesting. Cheers! Johan
Well done, Johan. Thank you
+Josh Brown Thanks Josh!
this is an awesome speaker comparison. Great Job dude! I'm looking actually for some "new" speakers and your Videos help me a lot. Big Thanks. And keep on rocking. Greetings Marco :)
Glad to hear it! Cheers Johan
Johan, you should be on the Marshall research and development team. Every one of your videos are amazing.
Many thank You's!
Great riff Johan, this inspires me to go play.
Thanks, great to hear that!
Awesome!!!! Celestion G12 Classic Lead 80 for me is the best sounding.
Thanks Mario!
this was awesome and very helpful, thank you very much!
That EV was my personal dream Metal rhythm tone.
I think the most underrated speaker here is the 1982 G12-50, it sounds like it would cut through a mix really well and not sound too grating at the same time, has a good mid-push, especially with the close and room mic together.
G12K100 my favourite I think I'm gonna get one now cheers.
classic metal, you nailed it. good job
Thanks for continuously exceeding our expectations. For me you can't beat an old k85.. or a first generation t75.
The speakers I liked in this demo on the close mic I ended like others better with just the broom sound cheers from Canada.
Oh my goodness, that OD pedal is amazing!
Thanks, it's so transparent and yet aggressive
I'd pick the '83 G12H100 as my winner for tests 1 and 2
The celestion 75 sounded excellent - ! My favorite nice bottom on it big mid no sacrifice on the top - !
Really, really great test scenario. My favourites are:
1. Electro Voice
2. 1980 G12-65
3. 1989 G12M-70
4. 1988 Vintage 30
The M160 is such a great mic. Makes them all sound good. M160s and 121s always seem to work out.
Yeah, very useful tools.
G12-65 is my favorite.
Thanks!
The 88 V30 sounds killer and the 14 V30 sounds like an ice pick.
Old uk gold vs modern chinese
This video made me buy today a circa 2004 4x12 loaded with G12H-100s ... I am likely to scavenge, since room for a 4 x 12 is nigh impossible to find in the house right now.
Thanks Johan!
Very informative. Nice job.
Us Americans appreciate the hat, Johan!! The tunes too of course!!
wow that g12m70 was my favorite by a mile. even though ive heard bad things about them that just goes to show you cant always go by others opinions. just curious what was your favorite speaker for this demo? great video man sorry if you've already answered that question
+Justin Lawson Thanks Justin, I liked the G12H100 best here, but the G12M70 was very nice too. Quite an underrated speaker indeed. Cheers Johan
Johan Segeborn it is 1989 (video) or 1982 (description)? Liked the g12m-70 most.
+Dav Cat Yeah, it's the ultimate NWOBHM speaker!
Johan Segeborn what is NWOBHM ? :)
@@nostalgiaz123 New wave of British Heavy Metal ! ;)
problem is they all work different depending on the amp and even pickups !!! Vintage 30 is as always, seriously hard to beat (loves my Ibanez) although I do like and use the G12H and specifically the G12M with Les Pauls which also came as standard in one of my Marshall cabs. Given choice I would match a V30 with a G12M , plenty of head room for a 100 top head,
1st 1978 G12-80
2nd 1980 G12-65
3rd 1983 G12H100
Goes without saying that the 2014 models may not have smoothed themselves out yet.
+Max Grau Thanks Max! Glad to hear it!
The late 80's Vintage 30 and g12-65 sound great! Love your demos and that riff! Yours or from a song? Cheers brother.
G12K 1:21
G12T 3:23
Cl80 1:54
The 88 vintage 30 is so much richer than the 14 version. The 14 is super bright in comparison... Would love a shootout of just vintage 30’s...
That G12-65just awesome!!
Thanks Jonathan!
sounds so nice and crunchy, miss my marshall jcm800 badly
Thats riff kicks ass!! Where is it from?
The most epic speaker shoot out EVER!!!!!!
That 88 vintage 30 is sick af
i own original celestion sidewinders but most reviews hate them why? yes bought them new, low hours on them. thanks for any help.
Oh boy ...I chose the 2010 G12t- 75 , baby, what a surprise ....the cheaper ones ----yet ....
2010 super best this time...oooh.! yeah. Close shootout this time Johan! - we enjoy them!
