G12T-75 wins it for me, as I expected. But really, the Seventy80 really took me by surprise, really nice speaker. Maybe that's the real winner, I didn't expect it to sound so good.

What an exceptional demo. Interesting how the Les Paul pickups and circuitry made the Greenback sound much more hi-fi than the Strat did (on the clean tones.) That T-75 is really distinctive, maybe not everyone's cup of tea but it really has personality. Again, such a top-rate demonstration, thank you for putting it together!

This is a great video and answers a very difficult question very well. Great playing with the only guitars that matter using riffs that tell and sell the story perfectly well. I have a full stack JCM800 loaded with G12T75s and reckon it's the best rock sound going. I also have a Fender 2x12 cab with vintage 30s and it sounds harsh with any head I use, including my Fender Supersonic 22 (which happens to sound divine through the Marshall Quad). I'm building a 1x12 cab for a Hughes and Kettener Tubemeister 18 using a G12T75 (purchased this afternoon on eBay). Was considering greenbacks and Seventy 80's, but this video proves the G12T75 is not only my personal choice, but the clear winner in the comments. Awesome job settling a subtle question that matters only to those who bother to ask it.

  • @cgavin1
    @cgavin1 4 года назад +8

I think for recording you want a relatively balanced speaker with a strong but tight fundamental and a little bit of warmth. You also need it to be capable of maintaining its identity from low to high power. You can then EQ that however you see fit. For this reason "classic" speakers like the greenback and vintage 30 that have very strong "identities", particularly clean and overdriven, are great tools but there's a reason they aren't "stock" in many manufacturers cabs.

I had a used Traynor 212 designed for them. It sounded good, but it was a little too bassie for my liking. Got some EVH speakers. Sounded much better once they opened up after breakin. If people want to switch their tone up, get different speakers and cabinets. The 70/80s sounded much better in an open back 112 I made. Small dimensions took out some of the woofieness. Also don't overlook the lesser of the big guys.
Jensen and Emi put out some great speakers.
I didn't like the GWS speakers I tried. None of them had a character I liked. Too sterile. Too fizzy . Too bassie.
Jensen jet falcon gave me one of the best tones. And it was a 10 inch. Less lows than some 12s but it really cuts through in the mix. The highs are chimey but not too bright.

T75 and GB's for me... don't mind a bit of fuzz but yeah the V30 has too much... may try 1xT75, 2xGB and 1xV30 in a quad for that slight under current of fuzz... if that doesn't work 3xGB's and 1xT75.

the 70/80 and G12T-75 were my favs. Very solid and warm. The G12T-75 had some flub on the clean sound, but otherwise, it sounded great. Strangely, the G12M Greenback sounded cold here, like it was going through your dad's old stereo lol. The Vintage 30 speaker were way too shrill for me.

The 70-80 sounds great v30 has a brighter top-end than the rest. What a find interesting is with the Strat The 70-80 Sounds brighter then the 25 Greenback but the Les Paul brightens up through the Greenback more than the Strat.

The V Type and GT-75 may make a better pair because their sensitivity ratings are closer than a V30 and a GT75. I find the V30 dominates that pairing. I find the V Type pairs up nicely with other Celestion speakers. Don’t know about the high volume sound, but great at moderate levels.

Ok, MY take, 70/80 & V30 were terrible, however the 70/80 was the BEST of a bad lot! The G12T was by far the best sounding as I think it is a much FLATTER sounding speaker, followed by the Greeny, then the G12B, which is a think a BASS speaker.
I thought the G12T was the best OVERALL/All round speaker!
    It handled everything WELL!
    Good comp! \m/

In this video to my ears best to worst:
1 Seventy80 - chunky, singy, full with clarity
    2 G12T75 - similar to Seventy80
    3 G12B150 - similar to Seventy80
4 Greenback - slightly muffled and thin with dull raspiness (not broken in ? open cab ? )
5 Vintage 30 - too fizzy, thin and almost unmusically raspy (not broken in?) I am surprised to rate V30 as the least satisfying experience.
Thank you for putting up the video, good work ! thanks

I like the 70/80, sounds the most like a Fender eminence speaker, my preferred tone. The vintage 30 sounds horrible to my ears. The rest of the pack sound a bit more muffled and lack definition, typically brit sounding. I now understand why Fender uses the 70/80 in some of their amps, cheap good sounding speaker.
