Its weird to think about, but guitar speakers are more of an instrument themselves than hifi speakers, they're meant to colour the sound.

Ive been replacing a lot of speakers with seventy 80's. General consensus is, is that they are supposed to be cheap thus shit. But I love the sound and have recorded with them many times. Screw public opinion and use your ears. The seventy 80 is underrated and I use them a LOT. Kind of like a well kept secret from celestion

All Celestions sound different than each other, but one is not better or worse than the next. It's all about what kind of music you play, and the type/size/wood of the cabs makes a big difference. Also if it's front loaded, or rear loaded, it completely changes the tone, and response. Front mounted cabs will project sound across the room, while rear mounted is usually more muffled. You could buy speakers that are $300 each, and if paired with the wrong cab, could leave you disappointed.

@@1peanutthat's because the 16 ohm rating is the impedance rating of that speaker. Not the resistance, which is what you're reading with an ohmmeter/DMM. Impedance is measured differently than resistance. Impedance is voltage divided by current at a specific frequency. Compare that to DC resistance, which is just a single ohm measurement taken with zero frequency. It's equation is Resistance = length / (conductivity x cross sectional area).
Notice they don't care about voltage, current, or frequency. The 16 ohm rating is an antirely different specification than what you measured. You only checked DC Resistance.

I used to have a G12H 70th anniversary which was ok until I bought a G12H Heritage Greenback with a 55Hz cone and for my tastes it's the best speaker I've ever used and I'm not going to mess around with swapping them around anymore, I'm happy with what I've got. 👍

Nice vid. These speaker demos are cool and all but people watching need to remember that microphones and microphone placement make huge differences in what you're hearing. The only way to truly judge a speaker is to hear it in person. Also, the room you're in matters too. I had a Blackstar HT 60 with 70/80s and I HATED it in a main rehearsal space it stayed in. Then I moved it down the hall to another room, where it sounded amazing. Its crazy. Oh and one more thing - amp voicing is another factor. Some speakers seem to sound best with a particular amp voice (i.e. Marshall Plexis and Greenbacks, etc) There's just too many parameters, I think at the end of the day all good quality speakers can get the job done if you can dial in your sound right.

I feel the seventy 80’s are underrated. Blackstar puts them in their cabs and I believe its because they are very versatile speakers. Compared to the vintage 30s. I think they sound way better I think if you dial back a little of the mids you’ll have a way more clear sound and still bot have that harshness of the vintage 30’s. I think the bigger problem is people just buy speakers because everybody says they’re good. They don’t use their ears to hear the difference. Every speaker is going to be different depending on what type of music you wanna play. Thanks for this!

Quite a few years ago I was lucky to get to hear 3 4x12" cabinets that were set up with a switch arrangement so we could quickly swap between cabinets and the amp. The speakers were all UK made versions (no Chinese back then!) and 1 had Vintage 30s, 1 had G12M Greenbacks and the third had G12H30 Anniversary Series. It was pretty close between the Greenback and the G12H30 and I put the G12H30 slightly ahead because it had a little more in the to give in the top end. I figured that I preferred the option to have all of the high end available from the amp but then I could EQ the amp to suit. The surprise with the Vintage 30 was that the top end cut off quite dramatically as if it had a filter on it or something. It dawned on me that this was a deliberate thing from Celestion as the high gain metal/hard rock player did not want the high end that could end up sounding fizzy with too much gain or treble EQ. Just my 2 cents worth and it was a long time ago so things may have changed.Cheers

The Seventy 80 gives less treble. It sounds muffled, as if it were further away. A little more sound pressure level is also perceived at V 30 .
If you don't like the treble of the V 30, you can always lower it with the treble control. It’s easy and if you ever want treble, you already have it.
I think the speakers should respond well to all the required frequencies. The personal sound of each is achieved with the equalizer and the gain controls.

The V30 speaker is also ceramic. Whether it is ceramic or not has nothing to do with it. Speakers with ceramic magnets can give a higher magnetic field and therefore greater performance (sensitivity). With the same magnetic characteristics, they have a slightly lower weight and price than alnico. There is no point in using alnico magnets just to put the "vintage" label on them.
In the 70s, I worked as an engineer in a small speaker factory, in Barcelona. I experienced the change of some speaker models with alnico magnet to ceramic magnet. There was no advantage in continuing to make speakers with alnico magnets.
In fact, the Seventy 80 is a low-priced speaker. The V30 has a much larger magnet, giving it 2dB more performance and better response in the 1.5kHz area. In Spain, a Seventy 80 costs €66 and a V30, €129. They cannot be compared because they belong to different price levels.

NEITHER of these two speakers would be my choice for an open back 1 x 12" cabinet or combo. Although you will find many of them in this application, if you do a little research on what these two were ORIGINALLY designed for you will find they were both voiced primarily for closed back 4 x 12 cabs.
IMHO the G12-65, the Green Back, the Cream back or Eminance Wizzard, Swamp Thang etc. - are all better in an open back combo or single 1x12 cab... I really on like my DSLs and silver jubilee 2525...I didn't think it would be even worth my time to put some v30s or classic lead 80s in the blackstar. But after reading it reply, I just might.

In this comparison, the V30 is really good while the 7080 has no highs nor bass. I had a 7080 in a Ibanez TSA15 cab, thinking of selling the amp because of tone. I replace the 7080 with a G12h30, and now my TSA15 is a keeper! Jazz, country, blues, rock , hard rock, pop , anything sounds good, clean or dirty. I recently replaced G12T75 with V30 and G12M greenback in a Marshal 1960A cab 4x12, same improvement in tone quality, far wider spectrum of frequencies

      , i have owned a 2*12 with Rocket 50...
awful midrange, runny bass and just powerless...
      Then i switch to V30, did a "break-in time", and that's it !

The 70/80 is exactly the same as the G12P80 that is found in many budget 4x12s. This is confirmed by Celestion. And it's a good speaker for clean tones but it falls on its face when you kick in the overdrive. The proper answer is to buy a well made cheap 4x12 full of these, for not more than 200 dollars, ditch those speakers, and install your choice of Greenbacks, Creambacks, G12T75s, G12-65s, or whatever your favorite flavor of Celestion happens to be.
I highly recommend seeking out the Hartke GH412 and GH412A cabinets. They're dirt cheap and yet they're made well with Baltic birch plywood construction just like Marshall 1960 cabinets, and are the same dimension as 1960 cabinets as well. And if you're really feeling frisky, you can recover them, replace the hardware and grille cloth, and make them into clones of Marshall cabinets.

Is it really worth the change from Celestion 70/80 to V30? Can't get the speaker tone to the other by equalizing it? Some say that the 70/80 is better for clean and others say that the V30 is better for the saturated channel, right? I am undecided whether to keep the 70/80 or change to V30🤔. I have a blackstar ht 40 club with the 34 celestion 70/80 and I like to have a fairly wide perimeter that is to say that I can play from decent clean to devastating saturations with good definition. Do you advise me to change the speaker to V30? I need the opinion of a professional, not a beginner, since the hearing of a person who is starting to play guitar is different from the one who has been doing it for some time.

I dont understand why so many show the difference between a 80€ and 125€ Speaker and a one "classic" and the other "vintage". For me it would be interesting to show the difference between same types of speakers like celestion v30, Warehouse Veteran, Jensen Vintage etc.
For me the 70/80 sound is verry good for rock and punk, the v30 i would choose for high gain, metal etc. But the Warehouse Veteran i think are better as the celestion v30. Because they haven't the high midds, that i dont like. (sorry for bad english)

    Both speakers are great.
Its all in your settings. Also with an EQ pedal and the pick ups you use will make your sound more to your taste. Do not blame the speaker for not sounding how you heard it from someone else playing it.
Bottom line, if you are picky, do not buy a cab that has speakers you will swap out. Just build a cab if thats the case. Same goes with cab material.

What are we shooting for in these comparisons, best home tone or best band tone? Since you recorded these tracks in isolation, this only proves that the 70/80 is a better home tone speaker

(Reposted from another comparison) Why would the Seventy 80 (was originally called G12P-80) have been around for 25+ yrs, still going strong, and why would so many amp and cab manufacturers use a Seventy 80 if it was not a very solid speaker? Traynor, Blackstar, Marshall, Line 6, Hartke, Laney, Peavey, Ibanez, Ampeg, Acoustic, Fender, Randall, Orange, Rivera, and the list goes on and on. Why would they risk their reputation on a crappy speaker? A blend of value and quality as in any business, but the evidence of the value and quality of the Seventy 80 is clear, at least to me and many others. Haters (and Karens) gotta hate.... YMMV. ✌🖖🤘👊👍🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥🧯🧯🧯😋🤪🙂🙃😁😎😎😎
