From Leo: I have heard trash talk about Seventy/80 speakers for years. I am generally a very clean player I think Seventy/80 are fine and actually like them better for the clean and slightly over driven tones. My favorite speakers for jazz are still the Eminence Cannabis Rex. Very warm and smooth.

The seventy eighty is very flat speaker, it really gives a very “uncolored” sound, just reproducing what the amp sends to it. Perfect for glassy cleans and slight, cutting crunch. The problem I have with it is that I usually play stuff with tons of distortion, and the seventy eighty just has too much high end and it begins to sound a bit thin and fizzy. It’s for cranked-plexi and heavier tones that I prefer a greenback/t75 combo, to emphasize the mids for some more contoured tones.

The 70/80's seemed to have more midrange and were cleaner sounding both on the clean and boosted channels. I would think they would cut the mix a lot better in a band situation. The vintage 30's were muddy to me. I'm really surprised at the comparison and my thoughts. I have a 212 with 70/80's and was thinking about switching them out for Vintage 30's, but I think I'll stay with what I have after hearing this. Thanks

The Seventy 80 sounded better to me in all of the different tones. The Vintage 30 sounded like it was muffled when on the higher gain settings. I gotta say Vintage 30s. Damn, because I have G12P-80s, which are pretty much Seventy-80s I think. But I can't play well enough to care too much and I never play gig loud. So they sound awesome for my uses. This month I bought a used Line 6 Flextone III 2x12 with the shortboard stomp box for $450 NZD. Mint condition after I anti-ox sprayed a scratchy volume pot. I've only had little 8inch practice amps till now. So like 35 years of tiny amps. OMG what a difference having a big amp with twin 12s makes!!! Will it make me Jack White? No, too late. But my son is 9 and he may just have the stuff. So glad he's got all my gats to access and the big amp. Got him a Harley Benton 3/4 Strat...but he hates it. He loves my Strat partscasters and my LP copy. So far nothing broken. He's learning to care for stuff from playing guitar. Cool.

The key to getting the best out of a a v30 is for it to be paired with the right amp. When it's not well matched to the anp it wont sound right . The v30 and the dsl 40 both c and cr models are are not the best combo . In a silver jubilee the v30 would crush the 70/80..the original dsl circuit was designed with the 70/80 in mind. The new dsl has the v type because they changed the circuit.althoigh the v30 pairs very well with, the newer dsl 5. O have a 5cr and a 40cr and through my 1 by 12 v30 cab the dsl 5cr smokes my 40cr tone wise . Much more open and has that classic marshall roundness. Much less fuzzy sounding than the 40cr .I do love the 40cr though..

For the over-drive sounds, the Vintage 30 all the way: softer (more luxurious) response characteristics to the complex overtones of the sound. However, Celestion markets the Seventy 80 speakers as ideal for modeling amps, and the higher frequency response and clarity is obvious in every example. I conclude, the different speakers require different EQ and saturation settings to achieve similar sounds. I have a Traynor YCV80 - tube pre-amp, solid state rectifier, tube power amp - with two Seventy 80s that is very much like a Fender Twin, and I love the clean and and powerful response, perfect for jazz and effects pedals (the drive channel is nasally and I don't use it). With my Traynor YCV20, 15watt tube amp with Celestion G12M Greenback, it's guitar-cable-amp.

Great comp Shane. I think seventy 80s have been unfairly maligned, most likely by people who haven't tried them. They are quite transparent and don't seem to colour the sound in comparison with some of the other speakers. I have one in a Blackstar Studio 10 KT88 combo and it sounds huge. I also run my Origin 20H through an MX 2x12 (the vertical one). With the original seventy 80s I was pretty happy with the sound. In the name of experimentation I swapped them out for V30s, but wasn't really happy with the result - it sounded kind of thick and didn't break up as early so swapped one of the 70/80s back in. I felt that was an improvement, but ended up replacing that with a G12T75. The V30/G12T75 is a great mix of speakers. One day I'll swap the Seventy 80s back in and see how they compare again. One thing, the Seventy 80s are very light in comparison with the V30's so the cab is now noticibly heavier to huck around.

Tested a Seventy 80 out a few weeks ago in a 2x12 combined with a WGS ET 65.
I didn't like it and sent it back. It sounded very HiFi to my ears.
It had very crisp highs like you can also hear in this video and it also sounded a little scooped to my ears. Especially with higher gain settings it really didn't sound pleasant to me.
Something about the tone seemed boring and lifeless and it somehow was missing any smoothness or warmth in the treble frequencies.
For cleans and slightly overdriven sounds it seemed usable though.
It's funny because in comparison videos like this here it sounded fine to me and like it could be, what I was looking for. But I have a feeling that the real character of a speaker only really shines through if you actually hear it in a room with you.

Just bought a cheap battered Marshall cab with 4x12 G12p80 (seventy80s) and I also have a really old 1970s Powercell 12-120 watt designed and used for keyboards that I put in the cheapest Pulse 120m watt Wedge cab (I use with my NI Smart midi S49 keyboard). I have another wedge with a Vintage30 in it, bought a pair of Pulse cabs cos I had the Celestions kicking about for many years boxed new. I also put some plywood around the inside of the Pulse cabs just to help control the bass better.
Without pushing them, using same amps instruments etc , the Powercell is so much brighter and cleaner the Vintage30/seventy80 are smooth DULL and needs pushing SIGNIFICANTLY harder before they decide to wake up withouth ever getting that bright top end on the Powercell. The seventy 80 are renowned for modelling which was why I bought them and are only slightly different to Vintage30s, again a difference you can only really tell once the speakers are pushed hard. The issue with the Vintage and G12T is there a one instrument only speaker, they do not like you pushing bass/mid/high all at once so hence a true Guitar speaker not PA or for keyboards. Whilst the Powercell is a wonderful speaker since it can handle what ever you through at them. especially high/lead parts at the cost of some bass response it would be a little too bright for some, especially rhythm darker metal. Again seventy80s are great for darker Heavy Metal, I think better even than the Vintage30s due to the added bass response/bottom end. a more full deeper darker bass
What I want to say is it all depends on your source, your amp, your speakers and what volume you are running them all at. For recording I usually always run the amps high gain but with lower input levels, I also find mixing more than 2 speakers can be a great benefit, in fact I will mic up the cabs (wet) and also take a line in from DI so have a dry track or two for any extra effects and modelling.
I have found no speaker is perfect for every scenario, you need to carefully pick and choose and it is very much down to personal preference and the specific need at the time (studio live room etc). Mixing different speakers in a cab is certainly one way round it, especially if you can wire them in stereo - split two channel. But for recording live you would probably find you use different speakers, and as many will say for live if you have a modelling amp get the seventy80s the Vintage30 are the once for the true guitarist who use effects without the modelling.
as for the difference in cabs, I dont think it really makes any significant difference SO LONG as the cab has plywood surround inside and not any form of MDF that will just soak up and muffle the bass or maybe not cos some might like that deeper darker tone without the tight bass.

Admittedly my ears have had many years of wear and tear but to my hearing the vintage 30 gives just a little more of what I need but it is a very subjective thing and I readily concede that younger ears may hear each speaker differently . Not saying that the Seventy 80 sounds bad but for the blues, the Vintage 30 gets my nod.

I'm not in the high gain thing, but I found the 7080 more modern tones, mean more scooped and bassy/boomy than V30. V30 more aiming at low gain/crunchy tones. It's all matter of taste and style of music we play. Also the quality of the cabinet interacts a lot with delivered tones, you won't hear the same depending on 1x12, 2x12, 4x12, birch plywood/plain pine, closed/open. Tone Graal doesn't exist apart in one's mind.

I got a 2x12" Marshall cabinet with the Seventy 80s some years ago and... while not bad, I do think they probably make the sound lack something. - I mean, yea, maybe my amplifier is a little questionable, but even when I try to set it the best I can, it seems to lack something nice, especially trying to get a guitar to "sing" or "shine". - It's like the "goodness" caps out at 75-80% of what one would like and it just can't get any further than that. - Maybe it's because I'm not driving the speakers hard enough, but... yea, I don't know, even at like 80-something dBs it should probably sound good. - That said, I might get another cab with say your regular V30s or the V-Type that also seem interesting.
I basically got that Marshall-cabinet because of its shape, being one of those vertical ones where the top half is slanted, to both have a nice size but a smaller footprint, as well as some spread for the sound, but also because it was like 300-something Euros. - Oh, and I believe it's one of the lighter ones at 23KG, while others of even similar size can be over 30KG for some reason. That's probably because the construction or wood is different, which in turn might change the sound as well, but I need to drag it up two flights of stairs.
