    The more you dig into speaker comparisons, the more you realize how much the speaker effects the voice of the guitar and amp.

      One of the most important and often overlooked parts of the guitar rig. Its also amazing how different the same model of speakers can sound; even ones that were made the same day/week on a production line.

    At first glance I felt it is clear: Electro Voice wins. When played together with drums I was convinced the eminence is better as it sits better in the mix ...

    Dude!!! This surprised me a lot! I been using EV12Ls since the late 90s for metal. So I'm familiar with the EV12L. I have to say that the EV12L sounds "nasaly" and not nearly as clear in a mix. The Eminence EM12 sounds so much better alone and in a mix. It just sounds like a superior speaker for $100 less!

    I was sold on the Electro-Voice EVM12L until I heard the demo at 4:50 and there was a weird buzz tone. The Eminence EM12 shined there. On the earlier clean and distorted demos the Eminence sounded nasally ... mid rangy.

    • @bardicdad
      @bardicdad 6 месяцев назад

      I don't hear that whooshy buzz you are referring to in the samples outside of the mix, nor do I hear it in other videos demonstrating the EVM12L Classic. There's something in the mixed sample that has a weird EQ setting that needs to be tamed down. It sounds like a high mid boosted too much on a very narrow band, and the frequency is oscillating I think around the 2k range.

  • @TyGerhardt
    @TyGerhardt 8 лет назад +8

    It's funny...I liked both of them clean and when they were distorted and isolated my immediate reaction was the EV was a lot better but then in a band mix the Eminence speakers sounded WAY better to me...and ultimately THAT's what I'm looking for...my guitar tones to work better in a full band mix.
    Anyway, pretty much all of my tube amps have lower wattage Celestions or other low watt speakers and I've been looking for something higher powered to use with my AxeFx II XL+/Matrix power amp rig. I prefer to use guitar cabs with the cab sims off on the AxeFx rather than using a full range setup. I've been using a pair of Mesa Lonestar 2x12 cabs with the Celestion C-90's in them and they sound good but if my bass player turns up too much I run the risk of blowing my speakers trying to keep up with him...at 8ohms the amp puts out 320 watts per channel and the Mesa cabs only handle 180 watts.
    After listening to a ton of clips I decided to mix an Eminence Legend EM12 and an Eminence Tonker in each cab (for 350 watts total per cab).
    They should be here in about a week.

    I like the EM12 better. To me it sounds nice and smooth in the mix while the EV has a weird upper frequency fizz that comes through on my headphones.
    Sometimes the 'clone' emulates the PERCEIVED sound of the original, rather then the ACTUAL sound. It's like the EM gives an already mixed and mastered sound of the EV.

      Yes the EVM12L does have a slight Hiss to it at an upper frequency when Overdrive is cranked. It sounds awesome on its own. Though in the full band mix, The EM12N cut's through much better because it's bottom end is much more prominent than the EVM12L.The EVM12L has nice detailed mid-highs. Fortunately I have a 2X12 Cab that might just weigh well over 50 pounds in the near future.

    • @zpottsy
      @zpottsy 4 года назад

      Ooop's. I meant EM12, not EM12N. But that being said there is a Neodymium speaker designed by Eminence to be exactly like the EM12. It is the legend series EM12N. The N of course stands for neodymium. Neodymium magnets are far more powerful than Alnico, or Ceramic magnets.There are 2 main reasons Neodymium is the way of the future for me, and a lot of others. 1 the EM12 weighs 16.3 lbs. The EM12N only weighs 6.6lbs. That's a lot of weight reduction. Especially for a 4x12 cab. Secondly I feel the neodymium magnets out perform the ceramic magnets as for the Tightness of the sound. I know it might sound crazy that someone took a magnet that is most generally used to keep a refrigerator door closed, and put it in a speaker, but neodymium works awesome for tightening up the speaker response. I myself have a new less than 300 bones Harley Benton 2x12 vertical cab with V30's in it. I'm going to replace them with the eminence EM12N (60hz-4.2khz), and a new model from celestion NEO Copperback (70hz-55khz). Both of those speakers Match perfectly at 100db each, and I'm certain that the strength's vs the weaknesses of each speaker, the cab would sound awesome. That being said. Have you ever heard of Neodymium Guitar Pickups?If you haven't Try looking into an *Entwistle HDN* Pickup. You can get them for less than 30 bones all day long, and i'll put them up against any SD custom shop pickup (that I own) and they will hold there own for tightness. I'm rambling. Thanks for the comparison video. Great job doing it. Excellent Riffing as to show what we really need to hear, as opposed to shredding ability's. I'm pretty much a Riffing Mad man myself. I know the video is old, but man that EVM12L sounds like a bucket of hornets. I like the clarity more of the EM12. It just seemed more rounded. But still I don't think either is what I am looking for in my cabinet. Maybe? Do you have a video of the EM12 in comparison to a Vintage 30, and used together? I'm looking to mix with my V30 in a 2X12 and maybe the EM might go well with it.

    • @rugbyguitargod
      @rugbyguitargod  Год назад +1

      I wouldn't recommend mixing either of these with a V30, since they're so drastically different sounding tonally. On top of that, with the Vintage 30 rated at 60 watts and the EM12/EVM12 rated at 200 watts, the V30 will definitely reach breakup well before an EM12/EVM12. I'd recommend the EM12/EVM12L if you have a higher-wattage amp that needs some high-mid focus and is capable of pushing them to move air. The EM12/EVM12Ls were a perfect match for my Mesa Tremoverb; especially at gigging volumes.

    • @rugbyguitargod
      @rugbyguitargod  Год назад +1

      Also, if you're going to run the EM12/EVM12L in a 2x12, you either need a LOT of cabinet volume or a Theile-ported 2x12. I'd recommend a Mojotone Twin Canyon 2x12, since they're pretty much the biggest 2x12 cabinet you can get and you can get them unloaded for around $350

If I disable the cabinet emulation of the pod go it gets better but definitely not good.

    • @florian6240
      @florian6240 6 месяцев назад

      Pod is definitely wrong here ;) you speaker is killer so that is not the culprit here : if you have an effect loop in your amp definitely try plug your pod here and disable speaker simulation. If you're still not happy from there, throw your pod or resell it and buy a better alternative, because it is long time outdated. A sansamp GT2 would be much, much, MUCH better and still sound good with your bass. Or a modern, and I insist modern multi effect might do the trick and it'd be easier to find and buy, plus you would benefit from different available effects, but remember it would be better to still plug it in your effets loop (if you have one) and disable the speaker simulation.

      Erick Emerald I took that into consideration. Inversely, active speakers can have the same effect. For the sake of speaker isolation combined with the lower volume and cab size, I don't feel like there's a real noticeable tonal coloring of the unpowered speakers.

    I'm a bass player and the EM12 sounds better for bass. The 12L sounds better for guitar unless you don't know your place in the mix. Let's begin by bringing the most bang for the buck with no roadies. That will be one 112 guitar cab stacked on top of each 115 bass cab. This means only 4 guitars cabs on stage and only that amount if you have a keyboard player also. Let's go with two 15 inch powered monitors used as mains in a small venue. Using house sound calls for moving everything rearward on the stage and to each side of the drummer. Most house sound has monitors so you may not need yours. I'f you making a lot of money, do what you wanna do. Not making a lot of money do what you gotta do.

    This is sad. If you have ever had an EVM 12L you know its strength and weaknesses.for a weekend warrior. They can't realistically be played at any bedroom volume. Why does everyone prefer Celestion? Tone.
    The weight of EVM 12L speakers? Roadie weight. You don't want to carry around a solitary one of those things around. 4 in a cab? Fuck that.
    You can substitute one of those in a 1x12 cab for a 4x12 cab as they are 100W RMS and your 100W amp won't know the difference.
    They are great bass speakers and are really full range speakers meant for a PA system.
    Sure, they breathe fire but, I compare them to a Gauss speaker in the fact they are basically overkill for most players.
    Eminence is more comparable to Celestion than EV.

      When looking at the specifications for both of these speakers, they are very close as far as power, weight and SPL. They also both have rebuildable cones and coils, which most guitar speakers are not capable of. I gigged regularly with a full quad of EVM12Ls in this OS Mesa cabinet as well as the EM12 and EVM12Ls in an X-Pattern in said cabinet and I feel these speakers were definitely NOT overkill. They had the sound and the durability that I was looking for at the time. Ideally, the best use case for them though for most guitarists would be a Mojotone 2x12 Twin Canyon cabinet. I feel like that combo would probably sound better than most Celestion equipped 4x12 cabinets.
