Almost!

Better than the EDM sets of other artist's music... This is what i expect when I see RDJ is going on tour...
it kind of is in some ways
Is that a bad thing?
Creating a panning effect by swinging the actual piano... That's actually feckin genius.
not to mention the doppler shift messing with the phases creating that watery sound
Is the audio supposed to be flipped from the audience perspective? Sounds like the audio is louder in the left channel when the piano is stage left, instead of audience left.
@@AphexSchwinn Yea you really got me thinking there... I guess it must be recorded from James' position but the crowd would hear the opposite of what he did... Which has got me thinking again xD
You actually think the piano moving back and forth would create panning and reverb effects like that?? If it did it would be very minimal - the reason is of course that the PIANO HAS BEEN AMPLIFIED. So all the effects you hear are most certainly electronically induced. 😬
@@AllSven Stand at the side of a road. Listen to a car pass you. You'll notice a panning effect. It's a remotely controlled Yamaha Clavinova, so yes, it is amplified... From the piano itself. So if you were in the audience you'd notice it, and they likely have mics set up to capture this audio considering the fact the hall has a huge impact on the sound, so you would likely not have a digital recording because it would be, well, a waste of a good acoustics. Not that far fetched or implausible.

It really does get to that point where no matter what one puts out, ones already established popularity will convince people that the project is somehow transcendent when in reality it took less concentration and effort to create. Funny how psychology works.

i love this idea, interesting spin on Steve Reich's Pendulum Music piece! the disco ball reflected lights are dope, love how it sounds a generator after a while, soothing sound design. Also the swinging piano is so beautiful, the doppler effect is amazing
This was so amazing to hear and see, incredible. Just got back from seeing Autechre there.. great venue too.
Good to tune into this today
don't hear this being talked about much in the realms of memorable live performances, likely because it doesn't have a massive audience or interaction with the audience but surely this has to be one of the most unique live performances in the history of modern music, if not just in history? it's definitely at the very least interesting and i love it.
not if you've been to an art gallery in the last 10-15 years. i've seen countless versions of the whole 'lazers triggering sound' thing since arduino's came out. Having said that, this was a decade ago, but now you see this sort of stuff in every modern art gallery.
@@ThisIsDownstate indeed
Just because it’s different doesn’t make it good. Least interesting is exactly what this is, hence a minor following.
I was there, the drone during the final 10 minutes or so was ultra hypnotic. Totally mesmerising show
@@ThisIsDownstate That's the point with AFX. He's always managed to BE the vanguard. And of course, the point is not the technique but the results of how is executed, creating one particular intended "song"
That Aisatsana track is damn wizardry, loved it since 2014 until now, and when sounds of birds and winds, Tooks me to an acid trip I had in 2018, Sunday morning walked to home still in a trip, picked a guitar and tried to reproduce this Aisatsana feeling, and damn It kept in my mind a feeling I think it will last.

Two thumbs up indeed Sir Aphex.
It’s almost like an ASMR with the creaking of the piano swinging and the reverby effect from the panning. It’s beautiful
Legend. I hope one day to see his greatness live
I think it's a lovely combination of "analog" sound manipulation through space and movement, and straight hypnotism. Repeating seemingly forever, but stays satisfying throughout. This is like meditation.
I love how he still rocks the ponytail
This is beautiful.
thank you thank you!!!💙💙💙💙💙
Beyond greatness.. Huge
I was at this gig. TBH it was a bit underwhelming at the time. But it did age well...
There was a first piece before this video started with a remote orchestra. A bunch of classical (I assume) musicians who played when the big screen in front of them told them to.
I don't remember seeing Aphex at the show at any point. Although in this video he is there at the end. Weird. My memory was that it was strange he wasn't at this significant event. Maybe there's something in that...
The hanging piano was actually really epic. The sound of it swinging sounded awesome in the acoustics of the Barbican. You can hear it in the recording a little but it was the best part of the show in person. It made the sound of the piano warp as it swung, pretty epic.
The third song (the light against the swinging balls) looked great in the theatre. It was more about the light everywhere than the music. Trippy. But fuck did it go on for a long time. I found it funny how it went on forever but I'm sure it felt like "pretentious wank" for a lot of the crowd after about 10 minutes.
Overall, the crowd were largely confused. A majority seemed like they went to the Barbican for every concert and just didn't get what was happening.
All said, it could have had a higher music to art ratio. Even at the time I loved crazy music. Even if it took 100 listens before it ceases to be painful and you "get" the vibe.
This gig wasn't really that. It was more art than music. I think I get what Richard D James was trying to do, but it felt - and still feels - like it was an experiment to play with the stereotypical audience of that place. And hell it probably did its job.
But for me it was cool as a thing. But could have done with more music. At least as much art and show, but more music.
Given everyone I spoke to at the time, I think even if there was a 30 second aphex drop beat at the end of the show, it would have been perfect. But there wasn't. If you hadn't heard Aphex before that gig, you'd have no idea what it was about.
Maybe that was the point. If it was, I'm not sure what your point is. But either way, I'm glad I was there.
one of the best comments on a video I've ever read. ever. you're a high iq, quality intellect type of guy, I can tell. I agree with you!
bro, he should have given you a beat drop at least for TEN SECNONDS!!!
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what a PRICK

I was there too, the first half I did find a bit underwhelming, but was still impressed by the scale and invention of it.
The second half (filmed here) absolutely bowled me over though. It was lengthy but it was so absorbing. Loved it!

I won’t pretend to understand anything about this guy or his art. I just really appreciate the shots of the keys with the lights in the background; a ship at sea rocking on the waves, wood creaking and sail ropes straining.

I've read all the comments. People give so many interpretations on the swinging piano. Richard is known for invoking so many interpretations, opinions and meanings to people listening to his music. For me, the swinging piano feels like something you would see in a music video or a concert. Some concerts have these types of mechanisms like the swinging piano playing "aisatsana". Some concerts have suspended and elevated platforms, like Rihanna's Super Bowl Halftime Show. That's kind of like the same thing with the swinging piano as it's in a suspended platform.
