APHEX TWIN - SELECTED AMBIENT WORKS 85-92 / APOLLO / 1992 / AMBIENT TECHNO, ACID TECHNO, IDM
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right? Видеоклипы
This is my favorite Aphex Twin album because it doesn't scare the shit out of me when I check my phone in the middle of the night to see what song is playing
Nate the Great agree
Are you pertaining to SAW 2 :D
Apart from "Hedphelym"
That is a pretty funny joke there, I am trying to listen to burial and aphex twins and it is kind of hard to get into, I have noticed that I am getting into it more with every listen, same with burial
Holy shit I'm not the only one
the track "Xtal" is actually pronounced "Crystal", for the same reason "Xmas" is the same as "Christmas". listened to his stuff for years and only found that out recently myself
helix Huh. Seems obvious now, but I didn't know that either. Cheers.
*Slaps self in the forehead* oh, duh! Thanks for educating me!
I though it was pronounced Crosstal
Dammit how did I never realize this. You are hero of the day
my life is a lie
Thom Yorke named Aphex Twin as his biggest influence, saying: "He burns a heavy shadow ... Aphex opened up another world that didn't involve my fucking electric guitar ... I hated all the music that was around Radiohead at the time, it was completely fucking meaningless. I hated the Britpop thing and what was happening in America, but Aphex was totally beautiful, and he's kind of my age too."
Although he has influenced Radiohead, especially on their album Kid A, he does not wish to tour with them: "I wouldn't play with them since I don't like them."
ooph, that's a big fat rejection
Fucking gottem
Both are brilliant.
Lmao I love Radiohead but that outright rejection just got me laughing.
@@AlbertGenower Nah fam Richard himself doesnt like rock music except Pink Floyd.
This album got me through 50 hrs of community service stemming from a weed charge in 2001.
With Aphex, you don't need fucking weed

Xtal is a masterpiece
As soon as I let that song play it feels like a wave washing over me. That shit is amazing.
it's ya boy skinny penis I know exactly what you mean the second that first high hat plays my head hits a space that is unreachable
I honestly can’t believe it came out in ‘92
the whole album is a masterpiece...
yeah, anthony's review here skips past it too quickly while seemingly giving it little real credit
Xtal still has me scratching my head at the fact it was made in, if not, before 1992
@Pete Testube Maybe, but the thought of a teenager or a person in their 20s making that by themselves with a fraction of the technology we have today to make music on is a bulk to wrap my mind around truly
@Pete Testube naw OP has a valid statement, Xtal and Selected Ambient Works is light years ahead of anything that was going on in the UK electro scene in the 90’s. Nothing still to this day truly sounds like it, yes there’s attempts to, but nothing will ever come close to making something of this ethereal magnitude again and to think it was all his stuff before he got signed by a record label, like he was in his teens making some of these songs. For 1992 and for the electronic dance scene in general and the genre of electronic music as a whole it’s beyond impressive and inspirational…it changed the genre forever.
tbh any trance, techno, house, electro, or any early electronic music made before 1995 kind of catches me off guard, but now im more used to it
Showed people at an acid party Xtal and my god the emotion in the room was crazy people were hugging eachother and shit.
😂
Xtal in my non humble opinion is one of the best opening tracks to any album
Agreed
I have to agree
Don’t forget about Archangel
I'm not even surprised to hear that you are also Cardi B, she is everywhere
Why don't you say CLASSIC/10 in the description anymore? Now I don't know if it's a CLASSIC/10

Absolutely one of my favourite albums of all time. I moved to Brighton (UK) for university when I was 18 (1998) and unfortunately I wasn't allocated a room on campus so I ended up sharing a big, old weird house in a village further along the coast (Rottingdean, if you're interested). I had housemates but none of us knew each other, so it was kind of a lonely time, in a house on cliffs overlooking the sea during a dismal grey, autumnal English October.
I found a small box of tapes under the bed, including a a copy of Selected Ambient Works 85-92. One day I took a long walk along the cliff and listened to the whole album during my walk. I then flipped it over and listened to it again OK my way back.
The music is so soothing, so personal. It has the feel of being made specifically for headphones, to be experienced alone rather than in a crowd (as the reviewer mentioned). It felt like the person who had left that tape there had known it would be found by someone who needed a helping hand. The comforting sensation was like eating a Mars Bar a d drinking a pint of ale by a roaring fire after completing a winter-time swim in the sea. The music is so warm, the opposite to the cold edges of much of electric music.
I went out and bought the album on CD, and when I eventually left that house, I made sure the tape was in the box under the bed. I attached a little note to it, suggesting the next person listen to it if they were feeling blue.
That was beautiful to read, thanks
Great story
The tapes are pretty rare now
This the most British shit ever frfr. Also tho I loved reading that
Xtal is the best electronic song of all time
KoRnFlakes1408 correct
This is a slap to Bjork's entire career. I propose Hyperballad.
Andre Novacaine Björk is heavily influenced by Aphex twin... Although Hyperballad is a masterpiece and a good shout, having an Aphex Twin song being ranked ahead of a Björk song is in no way a slap in the face, especially as Björk‘s music from Post to Homogenic would sound a lot different if it wasn’t for Aphex Twin.
Andre Novacaine (although I believe Homogenic is arguably the best electronic album of all time)
2lowkey100 I'm liking what of heard of Aphex so far. Just really getting into him. I can actually hear the influence
Xtal is what's playing in the speakers in heaven.

1:56 I consider IDM to be “artistic electronic music”. It doesn’t have to be fast nor slow. Its simply audible art that pushes boundaries and invokes the imagination
Introspective Electronic Music is my meaning of it
idm is such a fucking pretentious name.
I guess it could be called art electronic in the same way it’s called art rock, but at this point idm has stuck and I don’t even really consider the acronym at this point I just think of what it is
@@SwitchbIade I personally say IDM because it sounds cooler than “brain dance”
I don't like the term idm, it's kinda like "oh if this is intelligent dance music then all other dance music must be stupid!"
Good review melon, but it was very inappropriate to tell Mr. James to "go back to Ireland"
He was born in Limerick though
He's Irish born, English raised. But hey, it's all one in the same to me
ironic that fans of a person who was once a meme reviewer don’t know when a meme has died

Nlogax is the greatest BoC track of all time idgaf
Nlogax boc is the greatest! I'd rather have him review campfire headphase since it's my fav album by boc
Those albums are genius, but they genuinely leave me with a strange feeling.
Really hard to say which is more classic there... I guess it’s MHTRTC, though Geogaddi is my favorite BOC album. Whatever the album, he definitely needs to do some BOC for classics week, good call!
surface I went through a phase where “Campfire..” was my fav too. It’s definitely got the most going on, at least if I remember correctly (it’s been a while, admittedly). The use of guitar on that album helped make me a BOC fan. These days, and for several years now, I’d call “Geogaddi” my fav. Idk, after an acid trip with one of my bffs with that album as the soundtrack most of the time, I’ve just not been able to shake my attachment to it... really, everything they’ve released is fantastic. The EP, “A Beautiful Place Out In The Country” is just as quality as every album. They all are. ✌🏼

Xtal is such an incredible piece. It feels like I’m in a different dimension when listening to it.
Xtal fills me with so many conflicting emotions.
Sometimes it makes me feel happy. Sometimes it makes me feel melancholy. Sometimes nostalgic and reflective. I love that track off this album but it simultaneously fills me with both sadness and content.
That's the absolute best part about RDJ's music. In different emotional states, one track can give you totally different experiences.
Richard D James offers a truly unique musical experience due to his deep connection to computer science and experimenting with the most basic of computer generated tones as a young man. Through decades of experience and growth he has transformed into someone with a unique kind of mastery of synthesized sound, the same way someone with perfect pitch might be able to dissect and master an orchestra by ear, Richard can digest, process and produce synthesized tones like it's a natural part of his being.
Top 10 theneedledrop intros of all time.
Best classic album you reviewed out of all the other classics this year
Wrong.
Daniel Schauer Which one was it then? I mean everyone has their opinion, but the fact is that this one is the most complex record out of the five. It is the most detailed and groundbreaking.

No bitch, you’re wrong.
Definitely a classic. Xtal and Pulsewidth are my favorites on this. Great memories with them and they conjure such a vivid sense of time and place for me.
Heliosphan helped me through a dark time during my life. That alone gives this album a special place in my heart tbh.
Aphex Twin shows that you can be super experimental and still gain appeal as a musician

I love hearing the tracks in my head as they're being described. I remember years of this being stuck in my car, most notably a road trip from Pittsburgh to Toronto. Thanks for reviewing!
i love this album so bloody much, was great to see a review of it being done!
I’m a huge fan of Aphex Twin and of an old pal of his named Luke Vibert. He has multiple Alias; 1. Plug. drum ‘n’ bass. I’m a drummer so I love it very much so. 2. Wagon Christ which is this giant musical adventure that will possibly blow you away speechlessly. He’s most known for his work there. 3. Is Kerrier District. He has awesome disco tracks Under Kerrier District. Super groovy stuff and can be very intricate at times. Whatever it is that Luke Vibert puts out is 9 times out of 10 a must buy. At least for me that is. And of course Luke Vibert is an artist of his own obviously; which has produced many upon many of songs just like Aphex. Big fan of both. The music they bring will always be ahead of our time imo. One thing about Luke Vibert is that he is a wizard when it comes to mixing random voices into his music. He’s got the biggest library of voice samples. Luke has a little bit of everything. Guys a legend. Can be repetitive but it’s all on how you observe and feel the music as well. Again this guy has so many different Alias so yeah. He’s made a shit ton of music and has made music alongside with Richard. Both aliens at what they do but at the same time. I still hope they see each other from time to time haha. If you like Acid hop. Hip hop disco crazy beautiful stuff like Wagon Christ with trippy/funny/crazy voice samples in the mix then you gotta check this guy out ASAP.
Thanks for reviewing this album. It was one of my first forays into electronica and it's always stayed with me due to how hauntingly unique it is.
Truly a classic.
‘Tha’ is the track I always come back to. It does something for me that I can’t quite put my finger on, and it’s the only song that does it (besides some other tracks on the same album). It’s so ethereal, it SOUNDS huge.
'Xtal' is most likely pronounced 'Crystal'...like 'Xmas' and 'Christmas'. Richard is a clever fox.
nope its a common abbreviation used in electronic engineering :)
Great classic review but it got a little personal when you broke down about your aunt's cancer diagnosis

aphex twin is a genius at work, a mozart of moden music, an amazing music artist and talent who even won a grammy but somehow pretty unknown ( not to me )
awesome to hear you talk about one of my favorite albums.
Can't wait to see a review of Ocean Machine :P
That album changed everything for me. Interesting and well articulated thoughts on it.
Tha is one of my favorite songs on this album, and perhaps my favorite song by RDJ ever.
The true beat never gives itself away until you're a good ways into the song. It jerks you all over until the beat finally locks into place, and everyone who has listened to it knows exactly what I'm talking about. It's a weird feeling I've never experienced on any other album.
It's something only Aphex Twin can pull off easily. Give this one a listen.
Man I love aphex twin. This is for sure my favorite album by him, and probably my most favorite album ever.
Thanks for reviewing this one Anthony! I'd really love to see you do more electronic music reviews this year. Seems like they've been kinda few and far between. There's so much electronica out there nowadays just begging for your seal of disapproval (and also approval). ;)

I love you, Melon!! Really thanks for making this!! I've been waiting for this....Aphex Twin is the god of electronic music.
MEMORIES! Stumbled on Richard D through his classics Come to Daddy and Windowlicker. Picked up this CD in the mid 90's for $50 and didnt regret it for a second. Every beat and transition are forever etched in my brain. Think we played it until it disintegrated. SO GOOD
why was it so expensive?
Dude, Windowlicker wasn't released till 1999 😅
Great video. I love this album. Ageispolis is the first track I've heard on it and is my favorite. I must have listened to this album front to back a hundred times already!
I wholeheartedly agree with your very well articulated review Mr. Fantano.
By any chance might there be a Kalmankantaja review in the future, I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on Muainen or Musta Lampi or Tyhjyys, what with your being receptive to all that Black Metal has to offer????
He started making music for this album when he was 16?
Mr.Pat yes one song being ”I” that he started creating at just the age of 14. Not 100% sure though heard it from a different video a while back.
He made a bunch of music then forgot about it pretty much. This album is a compilation
Funny how the best works we get from artists are the earliest ones, when they didn't have all the skills to carry them along as easy.

Aphex Twin: weird sounds

Love the video, one correction though: Richard is still running strong as ever!! Could you do a review on the soundcloud dump?
This album singlehandedly got me into electronic music as someone who has hated and avoided it like the plague up to that point. Completely opened my mind to other genres in general.
Don’t usually only listen to reviewers “good” suggestions as everyone’s tastes are different but this melon has suggested this album and Burial’s “Untrue” and I’ve become obsessed with both, does anyone know any other albums he rates as highly as these?
One of my favourite albums of all time.
One of my favourite albums from one of my favourite composers.
I give it a solid 8.5 to 9.
Thanks Anthony!
This is the first music that ever struck me as experimental and creative but also beautiful and just good music. In 1985 there were a lot of people excited about the Amiga and Atari ST, but I can't think of much groundbreaking electronic stuff besides this and the stuff Richie Hawtin was doing.
