This is pretty much the only piano piece I want to learn. I just want to master it and have it up my sleeve to surprise people with it whenever a piano is around. One of these days...
The main section isn't that hard to learn as a beginner. One of my students who has been learning for about a year now has been tackling this track and it's sounding great. The tricky section is really the ending. You should try the main riff!
its being lost in happiness until you realize that it wont last and will end soon and a feeling of melancholy sets it. Like that last night with the one you love but you know its not meant to be and it will probably be that last beautiful night you will ever have with them
I’ve been doing some thinking recently about this channel and a thought popped into my mind overnight. It’s been a really interesting journey sharing my love of the piano with everyone all over the world. It still trips me out that I spend an afternoon recording a track (it has to be the afternoon for those curious about the process, as the piano is lit by natural light - it’s best between 1pm - 4pm in the room that I’m recording in), sitting by myself in front of a piano in my music school, and that people from all over the world get to experience a very private moment of my creative process. What I find particularly interesting though is when I listen back to these interpretations, there’s a pretty strong disconnect between playing/recording the tracks and hearing them back. Without a drop of ego, I personally enjoy listening to these tracks either late at night to help me fall asleep, occasionally in the morning when I wake up to find some more motivation about working on my Radiohead songbook, but my favourite time would definitely be when I’m travelling, especially in airports or on planes, and also on public transport. As there are a lot of returning subscribers and listeners on this channel, my question to you is this: Where and when do you listen to these tracks? What are you doing? Working? Studying? Travelling? Eating breakfast? Passing out? What time of day is it? What do you see? How does it make you feel? I’d be very curious to hear your thoughts, so hit me up. As always, thanks for supporting the channel and for incorporating this music into your lives. Man, the internet blows my mind sometimes x
Josh Cohen First of all I just want to say that I admire your work and I thank you very much for the countless hours you've spent on all of your beautiful piano adaptations. Particularly this is my favorite piano piece by Aphex so I really like this video and I come back to it often. I like to listen to your music whenever I have a calm moment because it really relaxes my mind. Another thing I like to do while listening to your music is try to imagine or a memory or simply try to feel what the music is trying to transmit (specially on the songs with lyrics or on those very slow "sad" songs). Keep up the good work man!! Thanks for doing what you do
Hey there, thanks for your thoughts and the kind words. It's really appreciated. One of my students introduced me to this track - I'm so glad he did. Always really refreshing to hear from my fans, so thanks for listening and checking out the channel 😄
Hey Josh first of all I admire your talent and exquisite music taste... Not all of us can find the time to write our thoughts, but you calm our minds and give us time to taste the musical notes... Keep up this amazing work, I personally study and eat will listening in the nights. Greetings from México.
When I listen to your music, I'm just home from work, it's 3 AM, and I'm having a beer. I'd love to listen to Radiohead at that time (end of work time), but I prefer to hear your interpretation of it. It feels warmer. It feels more personal. I play a little piano, but you make me want to throw my yamaha out the window. You have an understanding with your piano, which I can't match. Which a LOT of people can't match. But I love plugging in my headphones, sticking on your channel, and blissing out. Thanks again man. X
I listen to things at night before I sleep. It’s always that awkward timeframe where you lay in bed and just think, because you’re tired, but not tired enough
its the time where we are taught to fall asleep... like our brain tells us that we should be sleeping now... but we cant yet... and so we wander off ... a twilight between awakeness and sleep
You're welcome. It's nice to be able to share my love for obscure, non-commercial music with everyone. Saw a great quote today, "Commercial radio harms you and those around you." Pretty much sums it up.
This song makes me sad, thinking about the years passing by, how I’m getting older and older and there’s no way for me to stop or slow down. I think about how high school and soon uni will be long over and gone. How it’s been years since I finished grade 10 piano and I haven’t practiced in so long; I’m sad I may be losing my skills and ability like I’m losing my youth and years. When I look back it’s black and white, but when I look forwards it’s also black and white. When I listen to this song I see a white room with pure fuzzy white sunlight and it’s warm. It’s like I’ve already died and I’m thinking about all the experiences I’ve never had and never will get to have. Dreams and unrequited feelings, and people I will not get to have connections with. I miss my younger self and feel like she’s a person who I left alone at a train station and can’t get back to. I can’t comfort her. I can’t hug her. I have no photos of her. What she looks like and what she was like is disappearing from my memory. But she’s there still, crying because she’s all alone. And April 14th could be any gloomy winter/spring day, where the snow is melting into the dirty roads, the mud is peaking through, the slush is 2 shades of gray, the town I live in is 3 shades of gray, the sunlight is blinding me but it’s cold outside. Things I dreamed about as a 13 year old, things I thought would happen to me never happened and they will never happen as the time pulls me forward and I get farther and farther away from that train station.
Beautiful writing connects us, and I feel the emotions you felt, at least from my perspective. Play some piano - I have been a guitarist for years but over the last week I’ve actually started playing again, and I feel a connection with the 14 year old me who first learned guitar. Keep writing and keep feeling your feelings :)
This is one of those songs where it feels like something is missing. I am kind of obsessed with what the end of the song would be like if it didn't just end abruptly. I wish better musicians than me would improvise their own endings. My mind can only manage that feeling of something that I am constantly on the verge of remembering. It seems so familiar, and yet it never actually existed. I need someone else to fill in the blanks for my brain.
I've always found the ending to be super satisfying actually. Abrupt? Maybe. Just the right combo of sounds -- and the poignance of those last three notes is all i need.
@@Dweezil1996 To me it sounds like a music box running out of energy and stopping. I think it's very aesthetic in that respect, but I am also disappointed when music boxes stop. I think it would actually be really cool to have this song in a music box. The fact it is so short makes it more feasible.
@@TsuruchiBrian wow I actually really like that comparison - think you just made me like it more! I mean come on, what a complex emotion. Simple in where it ends and how those three notes are played reminded you of a music box running out of gas leaving you in a still and silent room. How many songs can you say do that?
The ending is extremely tricky but playable as you see here. So tired of the tired notion that this song can’t be played by a human being. You did a wonderful job, thank you for this video❤️
I was nearly disappointed, as I thougt some of the notes were coming from a backing track. But then I looked closer, and they were just being played effortlessly and almost imperceptibly. Quite impressive.
I first heard this back in 2010, when I was still living at university campus, Me and housemates at the time Matteo and Hector loved fall and Halloween. I listen to this every fall ever since 🍂🍂🍂.
I've watched a ton of covers of this song and one thing I've noticed is that in nearly every one the player has a bit of trouble with the ending. That's not really the fault of the player, it has more to do with the fact that this piece was written to be played by a machine and not a human. However, you nailed the ending. It's the closest I've seen to the actual recording. Great job.
Give it a go! It just takes a little bit of time to get those jumps. Eventually your hand just lands there. Keep in mind though, I spent the whole week trying to nail them - this was one of the lucky takes.

My Dad played piano professionally for decades for a second job. He'd work all day at Western Electric, then play piano at night, in smoke filled clubs to earn extra cash. ( 6 kids). I have heard quite a few really good covers of this song on all different types of instruments. This song absolutely shines on the piano and this version sounds as good as the original recording. Great work.
Richard D James on Pitchfork: On Kanye sampling Drukqs’ “Avril 14th” on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’s “Blame Game”: “Is it a sample? I actually don't know what it ended up being in the end, I'm so slack. I know that he tried to fucking rip me off and claim that he'd written it, and they tried to get away with not paying. I was really helpful, and when they first sent it to me, I was like, ‘Oh, I can re-do that for you, if you like,’ because they'd sampled it really badly and time-stretched it and there was loads of artifacts. I was like, ‘I'll just replay it for you at that speed if you want.’ And they totally didn't even say ‘hello’ or ‘thanks,’ they just replied with, ‘It's not yours, it's ours, and we're not even asking you any more.’

That was very beautiful and played very impressively. Especially towards the end with having to jump up octaves at a time. Wonderful job, wish I could play this song like that haha! Thank you for this.
Most welcome x
Always one of my favorites. Thank you.
You're welcome, thanks for watching! 😀
Very well played!! Beautiful
I knew this song after watching salad fingers episode 4, i felt so good to know it was aphex twin who composed, i'm a big fan. With that said, incredible work in the piano, keep it up!
Goosebumps.
Best cover I've seen of it. So many others just make an interpretation of the ending instead of nailing it like this

The first time i heard this piece i have come to mind many memories, including my childhood was a period so innocent, so without sins, so pure. I'm weeping. Thank you so much, Josh, for making this piano cover.
