The more I look at that last map, the worse it gets. Tigerstar didn't even cover a fraction of all the cursed aspects. Its honestly amazing how people can still make maps that look like they were produced in the medieval era in a time where satellite imagery is everywhere.

I’m pretty sure those are lakes. Amusingly, they not only made the Aral Sea a country, but gave it its former territory.
I don't know HOW, but somehow actual medieval maps tend to be more accurate than digital renders. People got LAZY.

First thing that comes to my mind is fear from geting entangled into copyright laws pushed people to making their own map.
Be it i think that finding public domain or some permisive licensed map on internet would be easier than making one from scratch.
Edit: actually after quick search i found public domain and permisivly licensed Blank maps on wikipedia
0:36 Did you see that they added a new land mass at the North Pole? They might be going for an ice cap, but it’s not distinguishable from land at all.
Maybe if they use a different shade of blue or white to make it distinct from the other landmasses and the water on the map so it looks like ice.

In defense of ticket to ride, in the rule book the makers fully admitted the bad city placement and said that they did it on purpose in order to make the train lines fit better and to stop the board from being too huge.
So, appeal to artistic license and practicality concerns?
As someone who once played that game (I played it with my mom in 2020), that actually makes sense!

For the ticket to ride one, you forgot the Spain took over Portugal, Norway sunk into the ocean as well as Finland
I actually mentioned every mistake I saw on this map in the email. But I guess he just reacted to it at a later time and he didn't recognize that.
I guess that Norway and especially Finnland are too much north to be on the map. Given how much north Denmark is already, I wouldn't see that as a mistake. What I would call another mistake as well tho is the Ottoman Empire still holding Bosnia in 1901.

As kygigni already pointed out, they're too far north. Not really missing, they just didn't fit
Also, for 3rd map, 2:11 is anachronism, as Petrograd received such a name in 1914, while for 1901 it should be Sankt-Peterburg (St. Petersburg in English)

The second map is from World Conqueror 1945 by EasyTech. Recognized it instantly.
It was a pretty nice game back in the day (I first played it about 10 years ago, maybe a bit more) and they released newer and better-looking versions since but imho they're past their peak and the maps still aren't ideal.
Still recommend their games. They do have some great ones

Still love their games, as unbalanced as they may be and as oddly shaped their maps always are. Tigerstar could do a whole episode on their games alone

I don't think the "bad maps" series will ever really die, because people are innately sloppy and lazy when it comes to maps unless you REALLY try to get things right.
Incidentally, I'd like to see how an art-focused AI system does with a world map. It could likely produce a really good one, but I feel it's more likely to produce a "NOPE/10" monstrosity if precedent is anything to go by...
The last map honestly looks like if an AI was fed thousands of world maps and then was asked to make ifs own.
I wouldn't be surprised in this day and age if that's actually what happened. Tigerstar could easily do a "Bad AI-generated maps" spinoff, I would think...

Also literally all Southeast Asian islands and Malaysia (and all Pacific islands too, but those are all pretty small or New Zealand, so it's fine i guess)

No offense to Indonesia or Malaysia or Japan, but they are both at the edge of the map and physically smaller, so their absence is less notable.
Besides the mistakes you mentioned in that Sister Cities map, the US took Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Guatemala and Honduras united, no South Sudan, Albania and North Macedonia united, the DR of Congo took Cabinda, Djibouti and Somalia united, Eswatini is gone, Myanmar ate up southern Thailand, Serbia & Montenegro is back, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia united, the UK took over Ireland again, the Poles and Lithuanians are back together, keeping the big Kashmir border dispute makes it seem like Kashmir has multiple countries. Also, the Baltic Sea isn't its own country on this map as if you look carefully, you can see the Russian border between Estonia and Finland is missing, so really, Russia took over the Baltic Sea!
....whatever they're on in Jacksonville, I want it! Then again, this is the same city that is turning their old Skyway urban people mover system into an autonomous pod system! Here's some Jacksonville lore: When then the Spanish invaded Fort Caroline in 1565, renaming it San Mateo to honor the saint whose feast followed the day they captured the river. Later, the river was renamed Rio de San Juan after a mission near its mouth named San Juan del Puerto. The English translation of the name Rio de San Juan, St. Johns River, has lasted through English, Confederate and now today. In 1822, Jacksonville was named for Andrew Jackson. At the time, Jackson was the military governor of the Florida territory.
Interesting bit of Jacksonville Lore. I knew when I saw that map it would be a banger for this series. Also I had no idea about the autonomous pod system. Where did you learn about that?
Ah yes, I guess Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean islands, Madagascar, Tasmania, New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Philippines, the South Pacific islands, and the majority of Europe all didn't survive the Thanos snap on that private school map. Besides the countries and regions that disappeared, guess we're not gonna bring up the fact that Tajikistan was gobbled up by China, Tunisia and Algeria united, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan's Karakalpakstan, and Kyrgyzstan are one country, Ethiopia has Eritrea again, or how Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay united. It's honestly very ironic for a private school miss out on a lot of Christian countries.
Rovaniemi Airport was built in 1940 with two grass-surfaced runways. During the Continuation War between the Finns and Germans against the Soviets, it served as an airbase and supply center for German Luftwaffe. Ninety percent of Rovaniemi was destroyed during WWII as during the Lapland War, the retreating Germans planned on destroying the town, but the Finns blew up an ammunitions train to stop the Germans from destroying the town, and it ended up getting destroyed anyway. The rova part in the name Rovaniemi has often been considered to be of Saami origin, as roavve in Northern Saami denotes a forested ridge or hill or the site of an old forest fire. The niemi part of the name means "cape".

1:00 that is World conqueror 1945. it was made a decade ago and was one of their first games. It’s made by the same people who made the World conqueror 4 game/map from earlier in the series. Had to edit because I had the wrong game LOL.
I loved that game when I was a kid (The one depicted with the second map). It was on my 3DS and it was essentially a WW2 conquest game.
It is also on Mobile: European War 2, a very successfull franchise with 8 games.

I think the map sent by Brandon is deformed because the guy who made it had a map ready for him but needed to expand it eastwards, so he just drew the rest as best as he could.

That first map is also missing like 2/3rds of Denmark, but honestly, you get used to seeing that kind of thing.
Fyn, Sjælland, and Lolland-Falster apparently just don't exist (not even mentioning any island South of Fyn)

He didnt show their resistance against the communists after ww2 in his USSR video and now he doesn’t even mention that Poland just annexed Lithuania in the last map.
So the second map is from a game called World Conquer 3D, I used to play the mess out of it on my 3DS when I was a kid. I really recommend checking out the entire map, it’s very bad.
Some features include: France owning Catalonia and the entire western half of Germany, the US missing most of Texas, Japan being basically right next to America, and the deformed monstrosities that are China and the Soviet Union

If I had to guess, what happened was someone was using the fill tool on a map of the world and accidentally colored in some of the seas
As always, this is quite a funny episode! For example, I found it amusing that the last map's rating dropped as you were looking at it more and more: from 4/10 to 2/10, and from there to "NOPE" out of 10! In particular, I found it funny that at 5:35, _"El_ _Salvador_ _del_ _Salvador"_ ("the Savior of El Salvador"; ie, Jesus, the namesake of El Salvador) abandoned El Salvador!
Also, I remember the map at 1:23: I once played this game, "Ticket to Ride", with my mom back in 2020! I enjoyed playing that game, and I'm glad that that map got one of the highest scores in this video.

The mobile game in the second picture is World Conquerer 1944 I think, a game made by EasyTech in around 2010. This company would go on and make more strategic games most notably including European Wars 4: Napoleons, World Conquerer 3&4, Glory of Generals, etc.

Wasn't Croatia a separate kingdom in personal union with the crown of Austria and Hungary? Maybe that's why the board game has it separate.
There was a recent comment by bobsmith7066 which explains the game creators did certain things to make everything fit better on the board. So, we can assume artistic license in this case?

Yes
The mobile game maps are from EasyTech. Their maps are generally hit or miss. If you played European War III and IV, Glory of Generals I and III, and Great Conqueror Rome, the maps range from decent to down right great. But if you played the games with the awful coastlines especially from the World Conqueror Series, then you have some pretty horrible maps.
The boardgame maps city placement is a recurrin bad map exp with that series; Ticket To Ride. But as surmised, it is indeed to accomodate the pieces, trains, that you need to place down to complete routes
Sadly major cities arent evenly spaced with Ticket to Ride in mind; so they just fudge the numbers a bit... sometimes quite a bit, theres a north america map they have which is just USA and Canada, and still some of the USA and Canada cities are on the wrong side of the border even

Where can I share horrible maps?
I wouldn't be surprised if the map at 3:45 was originally somewhat smaller (at least on the eastern side) but someone "expanded" it out before adding the coloration. One detail that points towards this is that the coastline of Turkiye has a sheer dropoff in quality around the city of Fethiye. A similar thing can be seen in the Sea of Azov where the Ukrainian coastline is decently accurate but the Russian side just goes in the complete wrong direction past Rostov-on-Don, going southeast instead of south-southwest.
They flipped the Malay peninsula upside down on that first one too

The European war (2nd map in this episode)/world conqueror mobile game series is a treasure trove of bad maps. The translations are comically terrible too
I live in the Netherlands. It has islands in the northern coastal area, and several islands in the southwest. Then there is the former inland Zuiderzee (Southern Sea), since the 1930s diked off of the North Sea and called IJsselmeer (Lake IJssel) ever since. You won't believe how many foreign map makers here on RUclips are butchering the entire Dutch coastline. Some of them just keep using pre-1930s maps...
