The song is ACTUALLY written in 1989 after the reunification of Germany. It’s just that animating a whole season took them years, and they also had to write other songs too.
Actually, the lyrics were recorded in 1990 - 1991 and it took quite a while to animate, but when the Soviet Union collapsed they decided to keep it because... Who wants to re animate the whole thing because a few countries collapsed?

I think that this might actually be deliberate as back in 1990-1991ish(when the song was likely written) South Africa was still under Apartheid and was thus isolated from most of the international community, so not mentioning it might be reflecting that in some way

I still dont 100% understand the situation with individual sections but i believe the Uk is made up of Wales, Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland as individual sections of the United Kingdom. As someone old enough to have watched the bit in its proper context back in 1990-whatever, I figured then and am fairly confident now that this was all just an elaborate prank on the FCC's standards for children's programming. A small remark: You ignored the animation, the song by itself does have inaccuracies, but some of those are corrected by the animation. for example, when he says Asia, he makes a circular gesture around the continent, when he says the Caribbean, the whole Caribbean sea lights up, and the same for Indonesia.

I think Yakko was just trying to add as many existing landmasses, including islands and colonies, to make a cool rhyme. It works because any kid curious about all these places can go and do research even if the places aren't all countries.
The song was written between the reunification of Germany and Kampuchea changing into Cambodia. Also they started the entire first season that same time. And back then a lot of those countries weren’t there yet. Meaning other than Caribbean Algiers Tibet, and some others, they were accurate or just using things to fill a rhyme like Korea, Transylvania, and the main islands of Indonesia. It’s harder to write a song about all the countries while still having good rhyme, than it is to just list all the countries.
Another mistake I found in the Dutch version which is pretty ironic: he refers to the Netherlands as "the Benelux". The Dutch verision gets the Netherlands wrong.
i love how he only talked about the sins in the lyrics, not how the countries are drawn. keep in mind, we only had cel animation back in the day and it's REALLY hard to draw a map perfectly by hand.

If I'm not mistaken the names Burma and Myanmar are related to the political regimes the Burmese went/are at, as in Myanmar being a more Buddhist Oriented Democracy and Burma relating to British rule or the mid cold war Stratocracy. They changed the name around not because of cosmetics, but because of politics. Which means the 2017 song calling Myanmar Burma would be like calling modern Germany the German Empire, or something like that.

No. Great Britain is an island. It is made up of 3 'nations' - England, Scotland, and Wales. England is often used to mean all of the UK, because it has the largest population.

The difference being that a country can technically be considered a semi-legal entity meanwhile a nation is a country recognized by the U.N. So Britain as a whole is a recognized _nation_ whilst England, Scotland and Wales are the _countries_ that make up the _nation_ .

The 90s where a strange time for maps i remember being really confused when i was a little kid and i still had a bunch of maps from the late 80s and newer ones from 1995 but back then i was so young i could not figure out which one was newer so i was not sure if the USSR was still a thing or not.
I remember having a similar problem with the flag of Afghanistan as a kid, as I would often see the older flag with green, white and black horizontal stripes, as well as the current one with red, black and green verticals. It was only when I saw the current flag on Wikipedia (as opposed to a book) that I realised it was the newer one.

@QuaintGemstone Transylvania is made up of 3 regions: Crisana, Maramures and Transylvania proper. Here in Crisana we still consider ourselves transylvanians(ardeleni). Banat is a separate region, but culturally close to Transylvania and has a similar dialect to the Transylvanian ones

I think the idea was to cover the map, not just to name only the parts that are countries. *Edit:* The intro to the song doesn't even say "countries" it says "nations" And a nation is defined as: a large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory. Country OR Territory, so the territories mentioned here are valid. I don't know why they included some cities, other than they are very important cities and it's worth it for children to know roughly where they are.
"Important" cities like San Huan, Dubai and Macau that American children would have less knowledge off and therefore not know are not countries, while leaving out arguably more important cities.
Also Burma should be accurate as they are still CALLED BURMA. Not just Myanmar. It’s interchangeable. Like Persia and Iran was, or Czech Republic and Czechia are today.

That's just a quirk of the English word "country", which has multiple meanings. In this context, "country" clearly means "sovereign state", so England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales don't count.

A small remark: You ignored the animation, the song by itself does have inaccuracies, but some of those are corrected by the animation. for example, when he says Asia, he makes a circular gesture around the continent, when he says the Caribbean, the whole Caribbean sea lights up, and the same for Indonesia.

I think Yakko was just trying to add as many existing landmasses, including islands and colonies, to make a cool rhyme. It works because any kid curious about all these places can go and do research even if the places aren't all countries.

The song was written between the reunification of Germany and Kampuchea changing into Cambodia. Also they started the entire first season that same time. And back then a lot of those countries weren’t there yet. Meaning other than Caribbean Algiers Tibet, and some others, they were accurate or just using things to fill a rhyme like Korea, Transylvania, and the main islands of Indonesia. It’s harder to write a song about all the countries while still having good rhyme, than it is to just list all the countries.

If I'm not mistaken the names Burma and Myanmar are related to the political regimes the Burmese went/are at, as in Myanmar being a more Buddhist Oriented Democracy and Burma relating to British rule or the mid cold war Stratocracy. They changed the name around not because of cosmetics, but because of politics.
Which means the 2017 song calling Myanmar Burma would be like calling modern Germany the German Empire, or something like that.

The difference being that a country can technically be considered a semi-legal entity meanwhile a nation is a country recognized by the U.N. So Britain as a whole is a recognized _nation_ whilst England, Scotland and Wales are the _countries_ that make up the _nation_ .

The show was in writing in 1980's and was released in 1990's because animations takes years and they used cell animations. Cell animations is like a flip book but instead of using paper, they use cells and they added lot's of details to make it smooth. That's why they're outdated

The 90s where a strange time for maps i remember being really confused when i was a little kid and i still had a bunch of maps from the late 80s and newer ones from 1995 but back then i was so young i could not figure out which one was newer so i was not sure if the USSR was still a thing or not.
That's actually really interesting. I was born in 98 and I don't think maps changed much at all during my schooling.
I remember having a similar problem with the flag of Afghanistan as a kid, as I would often see the older flag with green, white and black horizontal stripes, as well as the current one with red, black and green verticals. It was only when I saw the current flag on Wikipedia (as opposed to a book) that I realised it was the newer one.
i remember studying geography terms in my dutch classes, and teacher played this song for us to try and hear our countries, it was before 2017, and i was so upset not hearing Ukraine that time ;c

But the difference is, no country recognizes Tibet as an independent country, while many countries recognize Palestine.

That's just a quirk of the English word "country", which has multiple meanings. In this context, "country" clearly means "sovereign state", so England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales don't count.
