    If a converter glows and clogs, the problem is the engine that somehow made the converter overheat, not the converter itself.

      TeraVolt yes its known as a rotary engine. which kills cats due to oil burn and premix

      Oh, yes, i forgot this little habit of the Wankel of higher EGTs. My bad. I thought it was just the result of prolonged driving with a bad coil, stuck open injector, bad O2 sensor, bad MAF, bad MAP, bad sparkplug or the like.

      TeraVolt not entirely true. Cats eventually go bad, regardless of tune: the catalyst material literally gets shot out of your exhaust - albeit in small amounts - until its depleted and no longer functions as efficiently. Excess heat and vibration certainly don't help however

      +nan3r I have had mine working on my car for 14 years and since the engine is a GM Family 0 it's one of the kind that is mounted vertically beneath an heat shield and goes directly into the exhaust ports through hydra tentacles like pipes on its top (impossible to have it stolen, but a pain in the ass to replace and very expensive). The engine never misfired, and i would surely park the car, shut it down and have it towed (if no mechanic nearby at all) as soon as it would start misfiring (it's a family car though so i doubt the other ones who drive it would do the same, though i still instructed them about what a misfire is, how you can feel it and its consequences). It's still perfect, and OBD doesn't show the dreaded P0420 error it should show if something off was detected between the two oxygen sensors.

      TeraVolt hah yeah I got about 13 yr out of mine too - an RX8 none the less. It's probably wishful thinking, but it also threw an air pump solenoid code first, so I am hoping that if I replace the solenoid (thus fixing the air injection), the cat might operate properly again.
      There are actually guys on YT who "mined" cat material (precious metals) by sweeping up dust off the side of the highway. While converters can last a long time, it's not forever because, little by little, the catalyst mat gets ejected from the substrate

    is it better to just replace it? I seem to have the same problems kinda. Still trying to figure it out. I do have a 2004 rx8 as well and stalling and won't even get gas.

    Does the Sensor stay on Because of You gutted out the Cat????or does the Sensor stay off like normal?

    Hey do you know if it will throw CEL if you leave in the O2 sensor? I got a P0420 and want to gut the cat while I look for a suitable replacement, but I have emissions coming up and need everything to appear in place. Thanks!

      nan3r chances are it will not throw a cel if you are gutting a stock cat.

      PB ShiFu sweet thanks man. I guess I don't have much of a choice anyway

    Might want to put the oxygen sensor back in to plug that big gapping hole in your gutted cat.

      Yu Wish lol it has of course been replaced. But doesn't actually hurt anything except the ears

    Does gutting your catalytic converter waste even more gas?

    • @PBShiFu
      @PBShiFu  7 лет назад

      Miguel Martinez no. its purely emissions related. the a/f sensor comes before the cat.

      PB ShiFu I've seen many sensors after the cat.. it's called a down flow sensor..
      I've also heard it does affect gas mileage.. something about it messes up the fuel/air mix ratio making the fuel too rich. but I'm not a master so..

    • @th3ch33t
      @th3ch33t 7 лет назад +1

      Adam A There should be no effect on mileage. The after-cat O2 is normally just there to tell the computer that the cat is actually working and nothing else.

    • @PBShiFu
      @PBShiFu  7 лет назад +2

      Adam A as mentioned before the sensor in the cat is purely for emissions. if anything the increased flow should help the engine breathe better. the smell from exhaust does change but that is purely because the catalyst has been removed.

      Sounds good to me guys.. In fact im testing this exact theory now.. As soon as the procedure is done I will know for sure on my particular model of course. And I will try hard to let you guys know exactly how it goes for me! Thanks for the responses.. More responses always welcome!

    How long does the gritty sound last for?. Does it eventually start to sound smooth again as you drive?

      Randy Lahey once all the crap blows out of the exhaust. so maybe after 1 min of hard driving.
