Not all catalytic converters are created equality. Some the scrap yards will only pay $10 or less others they will pay $400-500. In general the imports have higher priced cats.
Off the top of my head, Platinum is about $1,000 per Troy ounce (31.1 grams), Palladium about $2500 (it has soared in the past week or so), and Rhodium maybe $8500 per ounce. You really ought to keep a better eye on your cat : )

It happens in the U.S. a lot as well. I think just about any country that have cars with catalytic converters will have thieves that want to make a come up on them.
hey cody. im from germany. i work in the metal recycling industry. from our customers we buy catylystars for around 100€ each. we sell them for around 250€ each. that means if u have a big catalysator u can surely get metals out of it worth like 400€. it always depends on the cat though. some are worthless. some are very valuable. greetings from germany.

Sometimes people don't want to go through the hassle of filing a case but ultimately its a moral obligation to do so. I despise eBay sellers who do those sorts of things so I hope you get your $$ back because they don't deserve it (but I suppose that you bought it more than 90 days ago? I've seen your stuff years ago along with Streetips or however you spell it, 2 very smart fellas! So many steps, almost makes sense to do it with a LOT of converters. I know the California Catalytic Converters have a LOT more metals in them, like 10× more!!!
I've reduced ZrO2 to Zirconium metal in a Thermite reaction, so that would be a cool idea. It's a very difficult thermite, you need to add KNO3 or KClO4 to get it hot enough. Even if you add a flux (CaF2 works well) a lot of the metal will burn in the air. I would love to have as much ZrO2 as cody.
@@oscarmendez590 That would work well if the chunks were big enough - I imagine you'd have to somehow remove the other coating without breaking it up or reform the crumbled stuff though? How to improve the reward from this experiment:
1. More Catalytic Converters
2. Less Cats
So more cats and less cats?
* _fewer_ cats !
It's much more difficult to keep it attatched to the cat. As to whether it cleans up the emissions of your mouse eating machine who knows, there has been insufficient studies on it's efficacy. :P
Yey Minster Blobby
Not all catalytic converters are created equality. Some the scrap yards will only pay $10 or less others they will pay $400-500. In general the imports have higher priced cats.
Off the top of my head, Platinum is about $1,000 per Troy ounce (31.1 grams), Palladium about $2500 (it has soared in the past week or so), and Rhodium maybe $8500 per ounce. You really ought to keep a better eye on your cat : )
you listed three materials. He salvaged one. How do you get the other materials out of them? Do you have a better idea? Other then keeping a better eye on the cat?

That’s crazy. I assume the real problem is finding someone to buy it. I don’t think the local recycling center is going to give you money for the material lol
Lol they pay so much more now
It's interesting that this got recommended to me because on Monday, some people broke into our work place and stole a couple of of those converters from the work trucks. That kinda hints to me that they must have gotten this video recommend to them as well.
@Nana Kwame no, I can assure you I didn't. However, I did say the word outloud, so that means my phone listens. That sucks.
In the UK, there is day light robbery of catalytic convertors. They must have seen your video 😂
@@WAM.87 Its everywhere. Precious metal prices are rising big time due to shortages, so its creating an in for criminals to make money.

It happens in the U.S. a lot as well. I think just about any country that have cars with catalytic converters will have thieves that want to make a come up on them.
Yup here in phoenix its a huge and i mean huge problem. They target peoples cars at homes, jobs, Dr offices, etc.

hey cody. im from germany. i work in the metal recycling industry. from our customers we buy catylystars for around 100€ each. we sell them for around 250€ each. that means if u have a big catalysator u can surely get metals out of it worth like 400€. it always depends on the cat though. some are worthless. some are very valuable. greetings from germany.

Same here. odd. I am a Cody's Lab fan though.
My mum had her catalytic converter cut out and stolen from her car last week while parked in her work car park. The grief and stress from the lengths thieves go to get these precious metals is awful.

That box of loose catalytic material was probably extracted from cheap aftermarket cats. Those have almost no resale value if identifiable as such. Certainly not worth shipping while still encased in steel.

It only cost $200 in chemicals to get $5 in metal.
And a year of waiting.
I think its more about having fun with chemistry rather than a profit. Hobbies can be expensive.
The metals in catalytic converters are worth a lot (probably not that much metal tho).

@@x3ICEx I apologize, personally I can't stand abbreviations. People assume that because they know what it means that everyone else will as well and that's just not the case. I do a lot of selling and buying on eBay and you should have no problem getting your money back from the seller. eBay sides with the buyer 99.9% of the time in cases like yours and since the seller knows that they tried to cheat you they won't put up a fight. Sometimes people don't want to go through the hassle of filing a case but ultimately its a moral obligation to do so. Then eBay will have a record of it and if the seller continues to do funky stuff then eBay can take action. I despise eBay sellers who do those sorts of things so I hope you get your $$ back because they don't deserve it (but I suppose that you bought it more than 90 days ago? (if under 6 months you can still file through paypal and they are even more buyer friendly)). If you have any questions about how to do it just let me know; it can be a little tricky to find the correct menu options. Could you give me the sellers ID so I can check them out I won't confront them or anything, I'm just curious. Best regards.

I wonder if you could do anything useful with all that leftover zirconium matrix...?
I've reduced ZrO2 to Zirconium metal in a Thermite reaction, so that would be a cool idea. It's a very difficult thermite, you need to add KNO3 or KClO4 to get it hot enough. Even if you add a flux (CaF2 works well) a lot of the metal will burn in the air. I would love to have as much ZrO2 as cody.
Perhaps some nice cladding for other interesting metals
@@oscarmendez590 That would work well if the chunks were big enough - I imagine you'd have to somehow remove the other coating without breaking it up or reform the crumbled stuff though? Cool idea though, imagine using this process with a whole "squarecomb" piece and then recoating it in something that looked amazing...!

Welcome to Cody's Lab. Today we'll be retrieving precious metals from a catalytic converter. (In the process we'll be producing mustard gas.) It's totally safe.
Considering that he drank cyanide, I'd say this is one of the more tame things he's done.
@@mr.techaky7655 I watched that reupload. I'm not so sure. I mean, he knew what he was doing so it was reasonably safe. I'd probably do the same thing if I knew what I was doing. People get scared of cyanide pretty easily but tbh it's not as potent as it really is made out to be compared to other poisons.
Mustard gas is not chlorine gas. Thought I'd let you know, they are both toxic gases but not the same thing.
@@LilJbm1 They're equally terrible.
@@jerichosamurai And yet they are still not the same. Chlorine gas is often refered to as being mustard colored and hence the confusion.
I do hope that if Cody ever has that concrete floor torn up and replaced that he makes a video of him attempting to recover the previous metals from it for the content
