Broderick Smith - Ocean Deep (Andrew Durant Memorial Concert)

  • Broderick Smith gives a superlative live performance at The Andrew Durant Memorial Concert, with superbly muted support from an all-star band, on what is undoubtedly Andy Durant's masterpiece "Ocean Deep" What makes it all the more incredible is that this was one of Andy's last, as he was on his deathbed when he wrote it. It only makes one lament what might have been had this talented songwriter lived, having then just turned 25

Deeply saddened tonight listening to this after hearing Brod passed away yesterday - he sang it to perfection. Australia has lost one of it's founding rockers who nailed the Aussie music scene from folk, country and rock. His voice was so unique and his quiet demeanour only made him more likeable. The harmonica was always not far away and everyone that saw him , loved him. RIP Brod, you were a brilliant performer and just all round lovely guy.

He did a pleasant Sunday arvo gig at moonee Valley legends. i was working as a chef there that day,, broderick asks if there are any requests, i ask him to sing ocean deep,, he answers i played it in the first session ( which i missed). then he says i will play it later,
true to his word he did it was the last song he played, and he said this is especially for the chef,, i was so happy , had a great chat with him afterwards, a true gentleman and a true legend
    Thanks Broderick,,,,

I was there (bit over half way back on the aisle on the left). An amazing night of amazing musicians paying tribute to a colleague fallen too early. If there is anything beyond this life, then I pray that I once again can be in the audience of a concert half this good. Broderick took Andy's last song and in a night of legendary performances, he made it iconic. Vale Broderick, and Vale Andy. To quote Lao Tzu, "To die but not be forgotten, that is immortality", how could this performance ever be forgotten?
