Broderick Smith - Ocean Deep (Andrew Durant Memorial Concert)

- Broderick Smith gives a superlative live performance at The Andrew Durant Memorial Concert, with superbly muted support from an all-star band, on what is undoubtedly Andy Durant's masterpiece "Ocean Deep" What makes it all the more incredible is that this was one of Andy's last, as he was on his deathbed when he wrote it. It only makes one lament what might have been had this talented songwriter lived, having then just turned 25

Deeply saddened tonight listening to this after hearing Brod passed away yesterday - he sang it to perfection. Australia has lost one of it's founding rockers who nailed the Aussie music scene from folk, country and rock. His voice was so unique and his quiet demeanour only made him more likeable. The harmonica was always not far away and everyone that saw him , loved him. RIP Brod, you were a brilliant performer and just all round lovely guy.
Well said. Couldn't have said it any better!
What can I say, this has always brought a tear toy eyes when I watch Brod amd Mick hold back theirs, but now Brod has gone too, it's even more Special! Always regarded Brod as our best vocalist, and Andy the best composer, and I'm a PK Fanatic. RIP Brod, there's gonna be one he'll of Jam wherever you bump into Andy, see of you can track down Renee too huh?
Beautifully put
😢😢 Absolutely !
Jesus 😢
R.I.P. Broderick Smith. Passed away 1st May 2023 aged 75.
Loved this 40 years ago. I’m 62 and listen to it nearly everyday. Most underrated singer ever.
This is, and has always been, a very goosebumpy song. Every note, every word, pure class.
My feelings exactly 💯. One of my favourite "Chill songs" ... Beautiful
Now, more than ever. R.I.P. Brod.
RIP Broderick Smith. Thanks for your contributions to the Australian industry.
May you Rest In Peace Broderick Smith. Thank you for the music ❤️
A masterful and unforgettable performance, RIP Brod :(
Thanks for introducing me to his powerful voice Dave
wow was 14 when this came out ,, 38 years later still sounds AMAZING Broderick Smith fav song fav singer
He did a pleasant Sunday arvo gig at moonee Valley legends. i was working as a chef there that day,, broderick asks if there are any requests, i ask him to sing ocean deep,, he answers i played it in the first session ( which i missed). then he says i will play it later,
true to his word he did it was the last song he played, and he said this is especially for the chef,, i was so happy , had a great chat with him afterwards, a true gentleman and a true legend
Thanks Broderick,,,,

RIP Broderick. Such a gentle talented man. 💖
Still gives me shivers RIP Brod you sang the crap out of this and made Andy's beautiful song yours like a true legend mate
The greatest voice in Australian rock n roll
And superb diction.
Live on through your music BROD SMITH RIP 🌹
VALE Broderick Smith. His voice, his version stands as a testament to both him and Andy, whose anniversary is tomorrow 6th. May you both harmonise in the ocean that never ends.
Condolences to all family and friends at this time - Yana
A record company should rerelease this concert on album and cd,it’s absolute magic
You can get the record, just need to find one. Can spot them at record shops usually around $25.
I have the album
Absolutely love this music.....during this period in Australia we had world class rock musicians and most of us (myself included) did not realise it. We were so lucky old but beautiful music.
I was there (bit over half way back on the aisle on the left). An amazing night of amazing musicians paying tribute to a colleague fallen too early. If there is anything beyond this life, then I pray that I once again can be in the audience of a concert half this good. Broderick took Andy's last song and in a night of legendary performances, he made it iconic. Vale Broderick, and Vale Andy. To quote Lao Tzu, "To die but not be forgotten, that is immortality", how could this performance ever be forgotten?
Ambrose covered this yesterday...I'm sure brod was a very proud father...rest in power legend 🙏❤
Great Australian Singer Broderick Smith R.I.P.😢💐🙏
My favourite vocal of this beautiful song. Thank you Broderick , never fails to bring goosebumps and tears. R.I.P. ✌️and ❤
I was 17 when I watched this concert at home. It has been sending chills through me for 42 years, everytime I hear it Brod Smith sing this live version. It's just beautiful!
First song I heard after my father died. It still moves me to tears.
Vale Brod Smith, never received the mainstream recognition he deserved but was highly respected by musicians for his incredible talent..... you are now reunited with your mates Andy Durant and Phil Emmanuel, I can just imagine the 3 of you performing this. Thanks for the music Brod
Vale. Lots of people are posting this performance today and for good reason. Wonderful song, beautifully rendered.
Its 40 yrs ago ! Wow...i was a 15 yr old ....played the double LP over and over and over .....loved it then - love it now .
Brod has passed recently and his legacy will be cherished. Ocean Deep is surely his pinnacle, vividly demonstrating his purity & strength, but his extraordinary range is shown in The Iceman and his songs & lyrics with The Dingoes & as a soloist.
Has to be one of the greatest songs ever, why is Andy never shown respect for all his great songs, baffling isn't it
paul carey the last song he wrote . Says so much about dying.
Andy is shown great respect by musicians he worked with and knew him. Many of his songs are played in local bands, and he’s still acknowledged as a member of re-formed Stars.
RIP to Broderick Smith
Thanks to the universe, and Mr and Mrs Smith, for the gift that was Broderick Smith.
Thank you Broderick for sharing your great talent and passion with us.
Still brings a tear. Incredible performance by Brod Smith
A great Aussie song seemingly lost in forgetfulness of Aussie music/under revered hopefully now Brod you will have the recognition you have longly deserved! Station hotel !
Only lost to some.
I don’t think so. both Brod Smith and Mick Pealing have had it in their set lists since the early eighties. Both still playing it, as do the reformed Stars.
Vale a legend. This song has stayed with me since I first heard it in 1980 ( I was 12) . Songs that soundtrack one's life . This one a gem. Thanks Brod, rest easy. 🙏❤️
The Poor guy was only 25 when he died. This is a brilliant track & the young man was very brave right to the end...Thanks Michel for the link 🎶👍✌👼 From a fan in the Northern Hemisphere........
forever grateful for this clip. What talent this nation had - lets keep them alive by sharing with those that may not know this.
R.I.P. Broderick Smith. You will be missed. ☹️
What a powerful rendition of a great Andy Durant song, as sung by Australia's master vocalist Broderick Smith !
This performance is absolutely perfect. Just wonderful. RIP Broderick Smith. You were a legend of Australian Rock music who will be greatly missed.❤
The most amazing gathering of talent in Aus...
still watch this at least once a month and have been for years ,and still tear up
40 years on and I still get emotional when I hear this song.
the spell is broken at the last moment, Broderick snaps out of his meditation. Special performance.
An Australian classic in every sense of the word...had the DVD!
So long Broderick. What a man, what a voice what a rock star - one of a kind. Aussie rock is poorer for your passing.
RIP Ray 1932-2010
Sail the seas for ever......
Also RIP Brod and Andrew, thank you for the music
😢😢😢 such a sweet sweet man ! We're slowly losing the cream of the Greatest artists , singers in Oz history ! Brod, Andy , Renee and Gudinski R.I.P. So so sad 😢💔
amazing one of the best songs I have heard sorry was living under a rock but have now seen the light of oz music
Still hauntingly beautiful
What can I say, this has always brought a tear to my eyes when I watch Brod and Mick hold back theirs, but now Brod has gone too, it's even more Special! Always regarded Brod as our best vocalist, and Andy the best composer, and I'm a PK Fanatic. RIP Brod, there's gonna be one hell of a Jam wherever you bump into Andy, see of you can track down Renee too huh?
RIP Broderick. Great voice who never truly received the recognition of his singing ability.
R.I.P Broderick Smith. Have always enjoyed listening to him, remembering when he was the frontman for the Dingoes. This performance is my favourite of his.
RIP one of the great voices & harmonica players in the world. You'll be missed!
How beautiful!
Beautiful song, RIP Brod
I saw Brod Smith perform in Richmond, Melbourne, in 1990. The violinist looked super w----ted and st----d, but played to great perfection and timing. A truly great performance and gig. I still remember it vividly.
I was there too.Great times and great band.
Rest easy now Broderick. Thank you for the music ❤️
Only just heard ... RIP Brod 😭🎼😇
A great song, one of my absolute favourites, why is this song not played nor recognised?
A lot of talent on that stage.
Just heard that Brod Smith has passed away. Another Oz music legend gone to that great music gig in the sky. RIP Brod.
I remember listening to this album on cassette until it was stretched and dead! Brod Smith was Australia's Van Morrison. RIP Brod😢
Timeless Classic. RIP Brod.
Not sure if Brod still does this, but it remained a staple of his for many years.
A very much under-rated Aussie singer.
The greatest. :-)
I absolutely 💯 agree with most of the respectful comments here. This is Australian live magic in the making. Combination of Andy's beautiful song and Brad's brilliant voice.. can never be bettered 👏 👏 👏 ❤️
Australia 🇦🇺 Van Morrison - god bless Broderick Smith - the dingos and all the other combos.❤
Broddie sang this sad ballad and put goosebumps upon goosebumps!
RIP Broderick Smith.
His son Ambrose has followed in his footsteps and is in two of the best bands on the planet right now. Far different music than this, but the apple did not fall far from the tree!
I would love to know he's bands names.

One of Australia's finset singers
finest
He’s a Pom
@@peterjohnson4322 So is Barnsey etc.
@@peterjohnson4322 He’s a naturalised Australian citizen. Hasn’t lived in England since he was 11, and certainly never sang or recorded there in those 11 years. I think we can call him Australian in relation to his singing.
Blessings Broderick! Thank you! x
Thanks Brod
