- Australia's Rock & Roll 'Boogie Band' from the 70's. Rare footage from the Nightmoves series.
Featuring........
Mick Pealing - Lead Vocal
Andy Durant - Guitar & Harmonica
Glyn Dowding - Drums
Roger McLachlan - Bass
Mal Eastick - Guitar & Talk Box Развлечения
The best most underrated Oz band ever. Everything they did was classic and authentic. These are the type of musicians we should never forget. Mick Pealing up front is a freak who can sing anything.
The amazing body of song-writing work that Australia has missed out on , at the sad early passing of Andy Durant , you just couldn't wrap your head around.
I understand he didn't write this one , but everything else had been amazingly written before he was 25 .
A true sad loss of an aussie legend.
( but ALWAYS alive in my house
A Joe Walsh original ...
Stars Supported The Beach Boys on 18 March 1978 at the Sydney Sports Ground. The Beach Boys had a troubled tour riddled with controversy. The Stars were a highlight and I will never forget their performance. One of the great concerts by a support act. Mal and Andy - 2 of our greatest guitarists.
I saw these guys at Brisbane's Festival Hall in, I think, 1975. They were supporting Linda Ronstadt on her Australian tour.
The Stars stole the show. They opened with a 30 minute set that was so good that Ronstadt's band had nowhere to go. She came on stage and the gig went flat.
Nothing against Linda Ronstadt; she was a great singer with a great band. They were just outclassed.
Snap! A couple of years later I saw them support an out of control Beach Boys in Perth. If it wasn't for the Stars I would have joined the queue demanding their money back. Andy and Mal were very complementary guitar players, never getting in each other's way, the songs (originals) were great and the band was tight. Andy was a huge talent and taken too soon RIP.
My fave Joe Walsh number., and these guys Rock IT!!!
First time I saw Stars was at Melbourne Uni A friend who was at the Uni studying said there was a band playing that day and we should check em out. After the first couple of songs, that was it ..... instant fan. Saw them many times after that at Bombay and numerous other gigs around Melb and they never failed to impress. Still go and see Mal whenever he's in town, such a great player with a tone to die for. For me, Stars is one of the most underated band in Australia along with Matt Finish. Cheers for the upload!
Thanks Ricko62, A fine band indeed that should have enjoyed more success than they received
First time I saw them was in a Aussie pub late 70's. I saw them a few times after...this video shows how f'ing good they are. Also have the Andy Durant Memorial double album on vinyl. A great Aussie pub band, great memories with the mates.
Loved this band as a 15 yo - Paradise was the 1st album I ever bought. Took me decades to realise this was a Joe Walsh number and whenever I hear Joe's version now it just doesnt sound right. Amazing bunch of musicians. Gotta love Australian rock - cant mistake it.
This is what music is all about, musicians. Unlike the wankers of today who think they can play these guys really could. RIP Andrew Durant!
Thanks for posting this Roger. Been looking for the Andy Durant Memorial show footage as I can't find a CD of it, and the YT algorithm threw this up. Excellent version. I love You Can't Argue With a Sick Mind ...
This takes me straight back to 1977 and how good the live music was in Melbourne. Thanks for posting this awesome performance. It’s still as good today as it was 42 years ago.
Brilliant, I still got the Paradise LP
I saw Stars at a free concert in Victoria Park. I remember Andy Durant shake his long hair I was a little kid but I have not forgotten how much he was enjoying being on that stage and rocking his hair to the music, I was stuck to the floor I had never seen anything like it.
In my opinion, the best the best live performance by a band in Australia. Three brilliant solos intertwined with Pealing's fantastic vocals. Aussies own Joe Walsh, Mr Mal Eastick on talkbox is haunting as is Andys harmonica, but Rogers bass just blows my mind, so so good. What a superbly tight bunch of musos. One of Australias premier live bands bar none, this performance I have had on audio for years but to see it adds so much more to its brilliance, great entertainers live.
Thanks Bill, It's just so wonderful that this was videoed and recorded live all those years ago.
Finally the full version of this classic. Stars signature tune from the mid 70's
Hey Roger. Kudos to you and the boys. What a magic time. I was there on my first gig as a Juke contributing reporter. You lads made my year. Hope all well there.
FJCK YEAH MATE, I grew up listening to nightmoves, and these blokes are my Aussie heros, bar none,
The best ever version of this song. Take a look at Mal Eastick when he was so skinny and had so much hair on his head! I remember Kerryn Tolhurst telling me back in 2010 in Adelaide that Mal Eastick turned up to a live gig at The Basement in Sydney to watch the Dingoes play a gig and Tolhurst almost didn’t recognise him because Eastick was now a really big guy compared to his earlier days in Stars.
The cameras really John Entwistled you, Roger.
@@sean---the-other-one Should i take that as a complement ?
What a bloody brilliant Aussie band ! One of our finest ever !
The Stars held several lunchtime concerts in our school hall at Marion High School in Adelaide back in '75 or '76. Can you believe we only had to pay just 50 cents to see them?
Yes they were a very talented musicians and performers Thank you RIP Andy Durant 🇦🇺❤️🙏🙂
What a wonderful band that gave us so many great songs and players Thanks most of these guys are still playing Stars seriously rated
Love the sound of your bass and playing Roger
One of Australia’s best bands Mal Eastick unreal
Saw them on Sunday (1st Dec) Night @ Lizottes Newcastle. They haven't lost a thing. Still sharp as a tack. Mal Eastik was spot on. A master bluesman.
Hey Thanks for coming to the concert. We had a ball performing at Lizottes.
Brilliant stuff...Ooohhh the memories. Great to see Andy in action. You guys absolutelyROCK
Fuck me ..i'm just gonna say it .imagine these guys got the air time and the breaks that chisel and ac/dc got .this fantastic .i was lucky enough to see mal at the rose of australia back in thd 80's .great performer .shauna jenson .👍👍👍👍
Awesome version ... and a great bass solo by Roger McLachlan. Pink Panther - who'da thought?
this version ended up on the paradise album
Sweet sounds..Greetings from Canada..
Stars were the warmup for ELO at Randwick racecourse in 1977. Excellent... hooked me.
Discover this in an interview with the Little River Band when you quit the band I thought Stars was a country band
There is a country flavour no doubt, but there is a rock / blues vibe as well www.starsofficial.com
What a band !.... Stars !...... C'Mon !
Was on my very first Rock Junior Rock Reporter Review Assignment for Juke Magazine. at this concert at the Palais. 1977. Not sure I had my license. Was privileged to see this fine performance live - the late Andy Durant and brilliant bassist Roger McLachlan at their absolute finest, interview Kevin Borich (got a scoop from him) and get picked up by a couple of very fine young nurses - still trying to wipe the smile off my face.
Pierre Nunns ... lemee guest! A SPUNKIE BLOND tallish and a very RED HOT RED-HEADER smallish... the chunky huneiez.
They could always score. But if outclassed by classic regular professional groupies, and always working as a team, they'd chooze another victom...
Bass solo alone is worth more than the price of admission.
Thanks Steve. It was such a long time ago
I've been tring to find this version for twenty years. Thankyou for posting it. The ultimate version of this song!
CLASSIC AUSTRALIAN BAND AWESOME
Fantastic band! What a great show Nightmoves was!!
Ah yes... Muzak from my days...!!! dont get much better than that live ...!!!
I have loved this cover ever since I discovered the Paradise album which was in around 79 after I saw Stars play at the Opera house steps.
I’ve got all the Stars recordings including four copies of Land Of Fortune 😂. I bought Land Of Fortune on vinyl then scratched it so bought it again then years later got the CD. Then maybe ten years ago I was on eBay and came across a test pressing of it and bought that as well.
That's great. Do you have "Boundary Rider" and "One More Circle 'Round The Sun" ?
They are re-forming with Malcolm, Mick, Glynn & Roger together with Nick Charles & Tracey Kingman & playing at the Sydney Blues and Roots Festival in October 2016.
i had this very version by stars on an album i picked up secondhand when i was 14 in 1985 (yep, smack in the mtv era). I thrashed the song to death; every note of that 'awwwwwesome' guitar solo is burned in my memory. Blown away to not only hear it again just now but to discover it was filmed!
Hey Brig Wood. The album you're referring to Is Stars "Paradise" album 1977. There's a cut down version on that album .This is the full length version from the Nightmoves concerts.
@@RJRKM yes, that rings a bell (album). The voice box gat solo is definitely one and same version though (presumably they cut other parts of the song out). quite a buzz though to not only stumble across it again but to actually 'see' the solo being played live. i couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the band, let alone where they came from etc, so i thought it was well and truly lost to my past ( keeping in mind that i was only 14 in 85, so this band wasn't exactly my era/scene if you follow). who is the guitarist then?
oh - i just looked it up. turns out you were in the band then; feel a bit sheepish now (ha)
Absolutely sensational! 🎸🇦🇺❤️🙏👍😃 Real old school classic rock!✌️🤟 Love it!👍😃🎸🎸🎸
A million trillion thank yous for this! THANK YOU - so precious!
Love how music never ages. Just brilliant!!
Awesome version. I think Roger McLachlans solo is brilliant. His playing on the Stars song "Paradise" is great
When your Fretless Bass still had Frets, Great..
Awesome bass work by Roger Mclachlan
Love it. Sounds like the version used on 1157.
You are partly right. A cut down version appears on the Paradise Album
@@RJRKM Thanks Roger, much appreciated
i am a still lovin them tailem bend south australia 13 10 2017 whooooo
Whoever was on sound dig a great job!
Ian Montgomery Recorded with the AAV 24 track mobile recording truck. Probably Ross Cockle at the controls. All I did was boost a little top and bottom to give it some punch and sparkle before posting
@@RJRKM Thanks for that Roger. very good job!
Great version Roger!
Thanks Keith. I was but a lad back then.
STILL AWESOME, I AM 74, YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Phenomenal song:) Got to see them at Bombay!
Brilliant! So glad I just stumbled across this!
Roger is "Awesome" on the Bass !!
11,27 of pure genius
Super versión
Killer bass tones there Rog!
Thanks Tony. I was young and care free with a Jazz bass and an MXR phase 100.
@@RJRKM Those MXRs are legendary
fantastic
ROGER i remember when you lived in invercargill great talent comes from there
Brilliant........if the cards had fallen their way, Stars would have made the big time not only here in Oz but everywhere
The best lineup..... they lost a lot of power after Glenn Dowding left.....saw them before and after....different energy. Roger left and was replaced by another great bass player.- Ian McDonald, of course Andy Durrant going was a major blow too. Stars were sadly underrated and blighted by some bad decisions. Signing to Mushroom was a mistake, they should have held out and got their arses over to the US - if Andy had survived. They did the best they could though, and it's great to see them get the recognition and respect they deserve.
Really interesting take on the Mushroom signing. I felt the company was obsessed with singles at the time and weren't interested in promoting this band at major venues and media opportunities. Getting the Ronstadt support gig should have been a major platform for elevated success. Peeling's voice , Eastick's solos are as good and inventive as David Gilmour's and Andy and Mal's songwriting were a great alchemy.
@@markwilliams3174 nailed it.
The very 1st time I heard this was on radio in June 1979 & went out the next day & bought Paradise. Vinyl... of course & still have it.
And... going to see them tonight at The Gov in Adelaide
Rob Victory FAR-KING-OR-SUM
Those were the days.
Wasn't it great when Aussie music was distinctly Australian. Two songs blended using USA songs and riffs but sounds home grown
saw theys boys at the old Elizabeth hotel in early days.new they where gunna make it. May have even bought them a beer...
Best version ever Satrs are the best band to come from Adelaide
I'm a bit of a fan, only saw them live twice, once when they played my school (the original bass guitarist Graham Thompson attended my very straight laced private school), and then saw them support a less then sober Joe Cocker
Mal is my guitar teacher
Your a lucky man
Great version and going very close to out Joe Walshing Joe Walsh :)
F, yeh!
I think I was there. They were supporting Mike Nesmith
I always thought this was from the Nightmove concerts recorded live @ The Palais
@@RJRKM was definitely from the nightmoves concert - Was there reporting for Juke - my first gig (Thanks Christie Elezier!)
Far out!
a great adelaide band
the from adelaide they went to melbourne :)
Still the hottest thing since sliced bread, Sure is!
A cover worthy or better than the original
WHERES THE BASS PLAYER TODAY, ROGER McLAHGHLAN
He's everywhere. The reformed Stars this weekend in Melbourne. 27th May Memo. Big & Horny 13 piece soul band. Geoff Achison and the Souldiggers, Mike Oliphant and the 2nd hand spacesuits every Sunday. check my Facebook site. Check that Roger McLachlan🤪
Just watched this right through after downloading it a couple of years ago and all I can say is "Mr Walsh, see what you did!!"
He would have loved to be there, as was JT here:

the lyrical imagery in this tune is so uniquely american i find it a little odd that an australian band would choose to cover it. great tune and all but still.....
It became Stars signature tune in the 70's ( probably due to our lead guitarist using a talk box) we still close with this song today in 2023
@@RJRKM ok thanx. interesting to actually be answered by someone in the band. so did you just pick that one because y'all liked the tune? i've heard australia is pretty well saturated by americana so i suppose even if baseball is not popular there they would still get the references.
@@NoirL.A. yes that’s me playing bass in the video and I also posted it. Rocky Mountain Way is just a great tune to play and a great groove. I don’t think we really paid that much attention to the lyric content as such. I also wouldn’t say that Australia is saturated by Americana. You should come down under and check out the Australian culture. You may be surprised
@@RJRKM i got friends down there and we got millions of em' here in L.A. and they say it's saturated with americana but i'm sure if i went myself (maybe someday, it's an expensive trip) i'd have a different experience. love to go though fer sher again maybe someday. i've also heard it's real similar to the u.k. in alot of respects except the weather. i have been to the u.k.
