  • Here's another heart-wrenching, epic song with coincidentally the same title. It was written in 1980 by one of Australia's greatest, most talented songwriters. It's the last song he ever wrote, and he wrote it on his deathbed, dying at the age of only 25.
    The day of his death was the day of my fifteenth birthday, when I was starting my own musical career as a lead guitarist in a local band.
    We lose more than a life when such a genius dies young.

    hat can I say, this has always brought a tear toy eyes when I watch Brod amd Mick hold back theirs, but now Brod has gone too, it's even more Special! Always regarded Brod as our best vocalist, and Andy the best composer, and I'm a PK Fanatic. RIP Brod, there's gonna be one he'll of Jam wherever you bump into Andy, see of you can track down Renee too

    Richard Clapton once told me he can't find it in him to watch back this show on video because it breaks his heart. He and Andy Durant used to live together at one time in Sydney, but Andy didn't want Richard to know how ill he was and kept going outside and vomiting during the start of his illness that eventually took his life.
    This was the last song that Andy Durant wrote before his death, but it remained unfinished until guitarist Mal Eastick wrote the music to Andy’s lyrics. It was first performed during this 1980 performance at the Palais Theatre, St. Kilda, Victoria during the Andrew Durant Memorial Concert. Broderick Smith performed the lead vocals on this song.

    Just perfect. A big song needs just the right voice and Broderick Smith - just perfect.

    I can remember hearing this on the radio when living in Sydney back in the 80's. Great lyrics. This is one of the greatest live songs. One of the great Australian songs.

    This is one of the great performances: outstanding lyrics, music and superb delivery by Brodrick. I listed to it when it was first released; a friend brought the record over, played it twice; - we didn't need to play it again - that's the way with perfection. Decided to listen to it just now but i didn't really need to as this performance left an indelible impression, its part of me, like no other song, simply one of most soulful renditions.i hope Brodrick you get to read this - you must be very proud of the achievement. Tony. .

    Ahoy SkyFrog, me old mate.
    Yes, it is beautiful. Did you know Andy died on my birthday - my fifteenth birthday; 6th May 1980. Such an amazing songwriter, such an awful birthday present. John Bonham from Led Zep died that year too and Led Zep went down. That's my "what were you doing when you heard [insert name of famous person here] died?" memory. I didn't know about Andy Durant at that time, unfortunately for me or fortunately depending on how you look at it, though I knew some of their songs

      Try to find a cd called The Southern Line by Mal Eastick, otherwise the Andy Durant Memorial Concert that this was taken from is available on DVD and possibly cd if you can find it

    • @tmnl8037
      @tmnl8037 2 года назад

      It was never released as a single and only on a live album. This is the only original version with lead vocal by Broderick Smith and this line-up of these musicians and appeared on the 1980 album titled “The Andrew Durant Memorial Concert” - released on vinyl album and cassette. It was released on VHS tape in 1980 and on DVD in 2008. It is also found on Broderick Smith’s album “Journal - The Best of Broderick Smith”, plus a different version recorded released in 1995 on Mal Eastick’s album “The Southern Line”.

      cruising yt sorry for the delay in replying lol , this is a song written by Andy Durant for the band Stars before he died in his twenties ( I think melanoma started it) anyway this is from the memorial concert dvd where a whole lot of artists played, so presume they decided amongst themselves who sang what songs and yes he did a great job on this version aye ,you can still buy the DVD as far as I know I bought it about 5 years ago...Cheers K

      Smith and Durant had crossed paths through Durant’s co-guitarist in Stars, Mal Eastick. Smith and Durant also co-wrote at least one song together.

      Written By Andrew Durant to express his feelings as the cancer was taking him. The best version in my opinion is done my Mal Eastick on one of his solo albums
