The masterball being able to miss is a myth. It bypasses all accuracy checks and autocatches any pokemon.
I thought so too, thank you for clarifying this.
Was about to come say the same
Basically, the masterball uses swift and X-accuracy calcs, aka not using maths and just hitting every single time. The super and ultra balls though? they do use it and somehow Superballs are more accurate.
Same with Swift. If you totally remember it missing once when you played as a child, that's not the 256 glitch that's your memory being wrong.
Except trainer pokemon
Scott makes the best gen 1 challenge runs in my opinion. I Still love the classics and watch them all, but these are so special to me, a big part is how humble Scott is and how he responds to comments too. Thanks for all the great Content
Thanks for the compliment Alex.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon if you want a nice chill challenge butterfree or venomoth is your next go to
If you REALLY WANT to suffer try an electric type
I want to see if electric types are worse here than in hoenn which unless you want to age 20 years overnight STAY AWAY from electric types in hoenn
You gotta thank the ogs like mahdrybread or jrose. All the guys are pretty similar in their content just pick a creator an follow
@24:25. Fun fact for you. Seadra is the only non-poison type Pokemon that gets the ability Poison Point
Speaking of water/dragon types, in Gen I, this combination would have been broken defensively.
Dragon’s typing resists all of Water’s weaknesses, both types resist Fire and Water, and Water neutralizes Dragon’s Ice weakness. That only leaves Dragon, which did not have any moves that are affected by typing.
Meaning that Water/Dragon has NO weaknesses in Gen I.
I think this is why Gyarados is Water/Flying. If it was Water/Dragon, especially with its stats, it would have been possibly the most broken Pokémon.
This was always my head-cannon. That and just the fact that, with those stats and that movepool, Gyrados would have been a monster if it didn't have a double weakness.
On the and other hand they could have also just add one or two good Dragon type attacks or lower Gyarados' stats to make it a bit more even.
Oh well, Gen 1. It's full of questions and mysteries.
@@tarabaci It's genuinely held together by duct tape if we are completely honest x]
Psychic and normal already have effectively no weaknesses due to fighting and bug moves being terrible. So i dont think this would be all that broken. Water/normal would be far stronger.
@@tarabaci ironically gyarados got the dark type in its mega
Kingdra got held back due to lack of top tier speed really
Alot of stuff that straight deletes kingdra is faster and the ice types have decent special defense
In addition water dragon doesn't have alot of resistances so your taking a neutral hit unless it's a water or fire move
Kingdra is one of those pokemon that is held back because of small problems it has
The 1/256 glitch only applies to moves (except swift). The balls use a different formula and the master ball bypasses the formula entirely.
The balls are still susceptible to the 1/256, but the master ball is not. It's like Swift or x accuracy.
Horsea's high defense and low HP are a reference to the anatomy of real life sea horses. You remember from that episode of the anime when Misty said Magikarp are all scale and bone? Real world sea horses are like that they have thick armored scales almost like an exoskeleton as well as a skeletal structure made of ring upon ring of bone like a macabre slinky, they are all bone no meat.
4:07 that's actually a misconception ! The master ball never had that chance to miss, if you remember hearing about it or seeing it, it was either a lie or the good old Mandela effect. In Gen 1 and all Gens to come later, the Master Ball works like Swift and Aerial Ace - They COMPLETELY bypass the check, and hit.
Basically, instead of rolling a number, the code does this:
If Master Ball then caught
If Swift then hit
That's it! No missing with the Master Ball, I promise you.
While not relevant to gen 1, Swift and Aerial Ace (and other similar moves) could actually miss in gen 4 and I believe 5 also. They ignored the standard accuracy check, but Bright Powder's modifier wasn't ignored.
@@needude7218 That's very dumb but nice to know.
God I hate NPC's holding bright power in the battle tower.
It's really nice of you to give the random hiker in the elite 4 a time split
I had this idea of an action movie in the pokemon work where a lone wolf, cop who doesn't play by the rules, instead of using guns just using two horsea that make adorable squeaking noises when he squeezes them.
This early game is bizarrely difficult for how good horsea's stats are! Never would have guessed that
Just a general weakness that I've spotted in your playthroughs.
You don't tend to use weaker moves for efficient time spending of pp to delay healing.
In this game its notable that you learn bubblebeam deleting water gun keeping bubble. You then run sort of low on bubblebeam pp. You could have gotten rid of bubble and used water gun a few times to spread pp.
I do think about this. I miss clicked and deleted Water Gun instead of Bubble. Felt bad about it immediately. I'm always trying to minimize the number of center visits I have to make. In this case it didn't matter because the Elixir + Ether on the route allow for the heal to be skipped anyways. Because Horsea learns Water Gun at level 30 I just re-taught it when fighting Diglett in the tunnel and that extended my training time by a small amount and prevented center trips.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I see you have a venomoth
But it's not on your TIER LIST board
besides paras only ONE bug is on the board
Also upon review THERE ARE 0 electric type runs completed
I have used electric types in hoenn and I had to resort to extremely desperate movesets like LEER strategy because camerupt marshtomp graveler where that problematic to deal with
I hope electric types are not worse in Kanto than that awful experience
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon can I request a grass type run?
I didn’t hors-SEE that coming! Great video Scott
This is definitely the cutest thumbnail on any Challenge video I've ever seen.
Sarina deserves all of the credit. I just put her brilliance into photoshop and added a black border.
A small suggestion for the overlay: Add a badge tracker like VanMan has. Doesn't take up much screen space, but it is a neat reference during the video when you don't take the intended order of badges.
Anyway, great video as always.
I'm working on a way to visualize this. It won't show up for many months though.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon You could use the space around the picture of the pokémon, on the left side of the screen, to display how many badges you have during the playthrough.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon The blank space under the list of moves the Pokemon can learn might be a good place to implement it.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I know you do this for Emerald playthroughs.
Even when it doesn't work, makes me so happy when you use Bide. Such a cool idea for a move; only wish it were implemented in a way that lives up to the concept
I love your artist! Gives so much personality to the trainers. I love that the rapping lass got to have some impact this run! Last few runs she's been more of an honorable mention (if i recall correctly).
If you ever feel like a mix up challenge, maybe you should try out a run using rapping lass or exploding hiker's team to get through for fun! (or other notable trainers).
I was also about to comment that. Great idea. (W)rapping lass vs Yellow.
I had never noticed before that the illustration of the pokemon has different expressions for different situations. Especially around 16:00 it has the cutest look after he tells it it did a good job.
11:22 was me as a kid as well. I never used non-damaging moves because I figured they were a waste of time. Years later and I'm just now realizing how powerful Amnesia and Swords Dance are.
I have no clue why or where the number was coming from, but for some reason I always assumed the boost would be like 10-20%. Still not nothing but not really worth the time investment. And I never really even thought to test this assumption
As a kid I spent hours with my charizard using rage on wild pokemon because I didn't understand that stat boost reset for every battle
On whether a fish could be burnt underwater... suppose such a fish swam too close to a hydrothermal vent. The heat from it could cause burns. You don't need fire, per se, just heat. Which is why the move Scald exists.
You could say that venomoth fairly gave you a challenge ;).
Also thank you for the video, coming home from a baseball game with my mini and having this to listen to was a godsend!
Wow. That early game was madness.
It’s really wonderful seeing how your channel has grown and how much goodwill you’ve garnered since starting your channel. I remember discovering you the week my daughter was born eight months ago and now here we are!
Hey Tom! Good to hear from you again. Hope your daughter is doing well! She's probably growing really fast!
Good luck with Erika and the Rapping Lass!
Ah yes. The one hit wonder Rapping Lass with the single "Bindin' in Vines".
Starmie's physic typing let's it see through the sand, great vid as always.
The bloopers always kill me, you sound so determined and then, boom, mistake 😂😂
“Most 1998 moveset” is so accurate. My first Typhlosion in c.2001 had Ember, Flame Wheel, Flamethrower & Fire Blast 😂 if it ain’t fire or damage dealing I’m not having it
I love how even though you’ve hands down got the best poke tube channel on here, you’re still researching and creating more in depth content.
I know you’ve done a few videos recently explaining about the differences between levels and how they jump up in stages but that’s something I never knew until you’d pointed it out!
A more than 20 year old game and i’m still finding out things I never knew!
Plus I agree with the person before me, no matter how big you get you still stay humble.
You’re all class good sir!
Even with Kingdra being a thing, Horsea is a Pokémon I tend to forget about; there are just so many Gen 1 Water types to keep track of... Water types in general really. As a Pokémon I don't think much about, I've no clue what to expect. Interesting to see that despite it's squishy design, Horsea has quite a lot of defence.
6:31 - The Shorts Guy strikes once again! My gosh though, the first ten minutes of this playthrough proved a tough one... and not even because of Brock.
11:24 - I had my Pidgey/Pidgeotto with Razor Wind because child me assumed that a move that took a turn to charge had to be insanely powerful to make up for it. That and it had Wind in it's name so it must be a perfect fit for my Flying type. The move mistakes we make when young.
20:14 - Always happy to learn of some strange and hilarious Gen 1 mechanic trivia from your videos. Growth suddenly having the ability to lower the opponents speed is an amusing scenario. Could such a thing occur with the Burn status and it's attack lowering property?
31:30 - I think the game was pitying you at this point. I didn't expect Horesea to do super well but I'm quite surprised at just how rough the playthrough was... and yet it still managed to rank higher than Goldeen. That's a surprise.
Great work again Scott. I was really impressed with the massive improvement between the first and second playthrough.
the new mechanic added in Gen 9 allows type changes, so technically the "Venomoth being every type in existence" running gag is a real thing now.
I’ve always had a deep appreciation with the sea horse. Probably my second favorite water type in gen one behind the best boy squirtle
Stoked for this one! Horsea/Seadra was the first water Pokemon I used in Gen 1 after I got nearly wrecked by one using smokescreen strats in Seafoam Island. Always had a soft spot for it after that. Knowing it's stats in this video and also how you moved so easily through the late game lines up with my experience as well.
Thanks as always for a great video (and the angry face illustrations, love em)
My vote on the Oddish Lass is to call her Vore Lass. Because she has Absorb.
Damn, that's one smooth as hell transition at 26:46. That's beautiful.
Yes, fish can indeed be burnt. Geothermal vents are stupidly hot (and also a good part on why life can exist at the bottom of the ocean!) and underwater volcanoes also cause problems. I doubt it's a common occurrence because most animals tend to not mess with that kind of stuff, but it's certainly a thing that happens.
I love that Surge is such a non-entity that he essentially amounts to an afterthought because the Wrapping Lass is a more pressing issue.
No Mewtwo fight, eh? Well, Woody is much more threatening, so it's reasonable to skip them.
It gives me joy when you partially flub a line and fall into a fit over it. Also I’m rather impressed by Horsea. Not a Pokémon I every gave much thought to.
Good video! nice job. Love the transition that looked like the captains room on the ss anne leads to the gym :D
also, so many innuendos love it. keep it up! :)
Even Horssea's anime voice is adorable, I've always wondered why Horsea became a Dragon type when it evolves into Kingdra, now I know.
Geez... If Horsea was a Dragon from the start, this would not become this bad. But holy crap, this was a insane challenge for how much bad luck you had with it Scott. Congrats though and one day Kingdra will have his revenge.
i love the "interactive" Horsea on the left...i didnt notice it until the Misty fight, but it changes expression based on its performance...once again, just pointing out those Small Details that i love finding so much...
I cannot stop watching your videos I love them oh so much
Been watching for a couple months now! I had surgery to remove a tumor on my neck yesterday and being able to watch your video today makes my day so much better. Thank you for all your hard work!
Good luck with your recovery. :)
Hope recovery is going well Julian!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon thank you so much! I’m officially healed up and all the results came back negative. I won’t need a follow up surgery, I really appreciate you and keep looking forward to your content! 💙
Time for some Agility and badge boosting!
Indeed
This run could be absolute Hell
Hello Scott and Denis!
I've never really tried Horsea or any of its evolutions, but I think it will do okay!
Scott: * talks about Pokémon burning underwater *
Me: * remembers that clip of SpongeBob and Patrick throwing Patchy's invitation in the fire underwater *
There's an itch that this water type only tier list really scratches in my autistic little mind for having a definitive list of how good all the Pokemon can be in gen 1 for solo runs.
With the popularity of the genre post jrose (was anyone putting out quality itemless solo runs before him??), it's a real possibility that in the next five years through the community we might have a definitive list for all the pre evolved Pokemon, and I kinda fuckin love it.
This is, of course, much heightened by your consistency tests and dedication to making runs as good and fair as possible!
We're going to get it!
Can't wait to see my boy dragonite hit the screen
It's so weird that Horsea can learn Double Edge, Take Down and Skull Bash but not Body Slam.
It doesn’t have a body to slam
Its body is very small and frail. Its head is as big as its entire body.
Been watching you since the first video wonderful to see how far you’ve came as a poketuber and player as a whole! I always look forward to your videos. Hope to one day see the battle of the leaf stones victorybell vs my favorite Pokémon vileplume.
26:44 "!" "Hey a trainer!" "Na it's nothing" everything going through that rockets mind lol
Loving the extra animations!
Horsea is adorable!! I love the art you used.
Kingdra is a cool pokemon that I really wish were slightly stronger.
Sarina's art is so good
Great job Scott! Thanks for the content!
Fantastic video as always looking forward to staryu!
Well that went worse than I expected it to go. I think it's interesting that even given the fact that the starting elemental attacks (Bubble Absorb Psywave etc) don't guarantee ease through the early game Game Freak was still so stingy about giving them to Pokemon by level up.
The paralysis continuing to affect his speed when the opponent boosts kinda makes you wonder if a burn could eventually lower his attack down to 1.
Yup. It happens with Burn too...
Horsea is so cute! I remember having a temporary tattoo book and I used Horsea first! I also remember that the episode of the anime where it gets caught being really creepy!
I think I may have had that same temporary tattoo book!
holy crap y’all too?
The day this came out I kept falling asleep, due to lack of sleep. So I used rest repeatedly during the video.
I think I read somewhere in my marine biology class in high school that Yeti Crabs use volcanic vents to cook fish and other prey but I could be mistaken
Ooooo horsea!! This is gonna be such a fun one! Horsea is so great, and I hope it tears this challenge up!
Probably my new favorite thumbnail it's so cute and video is good video too
Every Pokemon, every video, I'll be there my dude ❤
Great video as always!
Bruh the sticky sailor one got me good 😂☠️
Yeah not such a family friendly moment but decent.
"I really should've let nurse Joy take care of my P.P." lmfao still making my smile
"The seaman, I mean sailor, put Horsea in a sticky situation" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 best joke of any video
Agreed. It's my fav
Not sure how long you've been including the Oak battle, but I liked it! Did it replace the Mewtwo fight?
Keep up the awesome content!
Mewtwo is still usually in there. Oak has been in post-credits since Diglett or Cubone. Quite awhile now.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I’ll see may way out. I’m not worthy of being a supporter after missing these sorts of details
But, seriously, thanks for letting me know! Love the addition
"I really should have went back and let nurse Joy take care of my PP"
I laughed way too hard at this.
Same. The delivery was perfect.
For a late game mon, Horsea’s finish is really admirable
“I did not think that the sea man - I mean the sailor would be such a sticky situation”
I'm proud of this line
Scott: Tentacool deserves better.
Me: *thinks of a Cathulu evolution for Tentacruel.
If you have a pokemon with a Water move, the hiker on the first floor (before taking the first ladder) is a source of fast experience.
Yup! I fight him a lot with water-types!
>Scott thinking the Seaman would not be a stick situation
Oh, Scott!
Horsea's facial expressions were adorable, and kind of made me feel your grind throughout this playthrough. I had low expectations for Horsea, because I used to train one in gen 2,and it was awfully weak. So I can see why the early game was such a struggle, especially with the youngster shorts(he could be pretty annoying for some pokemon, maybe he should have its own art), having to rely only on bubble, could be very hard. 🤔
For extra coverage I would have used double edge with rest for the mid game, even for the elite 4, maybe it have helped, who knows?
And yeah, getting a flying pokemon could be rough sometimes, it happened to me too, when I tried 3 times to catch a Doudo with a great ball, but it missed, and then I had to buy more from the department store. Then again rng can be cruel, sometimes. 😊
But, hey, managing to cut your real time in more than 20 minutes is really good for a Horsea(and even having a first try victory against Oak 👏👏) . Maybe it would do better in gen 2😌.
By the way, these bloopers are kind of giving me confidence whenever I'm doing my voice overs, so keep on making them, they are super hilarious. 😁
And also these bloopers
I think the main reason many people didn't use Horsea back in the day is existence of other water types. By the time you can reasonably get it you have other options so it becomes preference and thats assuming you dont have either a Squirtle or took the time to build up a Magikarp or went back depending on version for a pokemon in either area outside the gates of pokemon league or like the area by Bills house. It's difficult even as I'm typing it to justify in my mind because I'm already more attracted to a Krabby for instance.
Best of luck to the little guy in the challenge!
Just to be clear, burns are the result of something becoming so hot that it melts very slightly, it doesn't have to be due to fire. Being burnt means your skin has melted slightly and is damaged, and needs to be replaced. So yeah, fish can be burnt underwater if it gets too hot.
9:36 I liked, commented, AND subscribed. A man of culture.
If the title was... WHOS THAT POKEMON! I would have never have guessed you was using horsea! Those pixels 🥲
These bloopers had a healthy dose of Shhhean Connery 😁
I been waiting so long for this lol thank you Scotts thoughts

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon and he took the time to thank me wow what an amazing person no thank you for all the hard work you do I absolutely love your videos so much :).
I think I ligit bing watched every video you made lol
Great videos man thank you!
I rarely use horsea in playthroughs bc its so hard to get in most games, and it's a trade evolution for kingdra. I don't even know where it is in gen 1, i imagine its a good/super rod encounter.
Also im trying to comment on every one of your videos. i watch them when i go to sleep so it feels like a nice thing to give back a little.
I look forward to the rest of the comments. I think it’s a super rod encounter on the long route south of lavender town.
Amazing run as always, could really sense your frustration on route 3 to the midgame ^^
How is the 40k special coming along? Really looking forward to get some of the questions answered

I'm hopefully going to be streaming more soon so maybe we can play Pokemon together sometime! If you ever want to do a yellow challenge I'm down! (Race, soul-link, something else!)
The cute seahorse is ready to rumble!
"I really should have gone back to Pewter City and let nurse Joy take care of my pee-pee" - we see what you did there, Scott :)
Not sure if his fiancee is gonna approve of that plan.
Another cool run, love to see it!
Also, what fossil did you get? I don't believe you mentioned it ;)
Dome
The sticky situation cracked me up 🤣🤣
Yes, Horsea! Loved it in that anime episode!
Before watching the video:
The stats are pretty good for a first-stage pokemon. 70 special and water stab is always great. And right from the get go watergun will make sure Brock won’t delay you. And Ice moves will make Lance easy, aside from Gyarados. 70 defense is quite surprising and will be helpful. Speed is ok. Not great, but good enough to outspeed if your level is high enough.
Agility to boost and take advantage of the badge boost glitch will also help.
Biggest issue will be the lack of coverage. Attack 40 is not great to use normal moves to cover against water pokemon. So, Lorelai will be an issue and so will the final Rival.
This run will be easy most of the time, with a handful of really tough battles, namely Misty, Lorelai and the final Champion.
After watching:
Interesting! A lot more struggle during regular trainer battles than I thought. And frankly, I thought it would do better. More along the lines of Poliwag.
But I do think that the lack of good attack stat AND normal moves for coverage is quite the drawback.
Cool video, as always :-)
Horsea is one of my favorite water pokemon! I hope he does well
i think the phenomenon you were thinking of when talking about burning fish while fighting blane is just boiling water
Concerning Horsea's relatively high defense, I wonder if we can handwave it as the opposing pokemon being afraid of hurting themselves on Horsea's spikes, so they don't hit quite as hard.
Just like Magikarp has high-ish defense due to being almost 100% scales and bones.
You and JRose are my favourites❤️
Bug caster sounds correct, the guy casts bugs from his balls o.O
I thought a crying Pikachu would be sad.... but seeing a sad Horsea broke my heart!
Yes, Scott, I believe fish can be burnt in water due to a rare and obscure phenomenon known as "scalding" 😉. Try boiling water in a pot then putting your hand in it, you'll understand 😛
I'm just being mean, I'm sorry. I never liked Horsea, I'm afraid. I was forever a Cloyster kid, I loved its design with its little smirk. Have you done a Shellder run already? I don't recall.
There's even a Pokémon Move called Scald. While it's Water-Type, it can inflict Burn Status!
Horsea learns dragon rage as an egg move. Pokemon crystal level 10 battle tower I always carried one
I've been looking forward to this one, It is one of my favorite pokemon lines but i think the playthrough is gonna be pretty painful
"I should've gone to the Pokemon Center and let nurse joy take care of my pp"
No matter how old I get, this will make me giggle
Thank you king. Dudley the self destructive hiker blasted off again
