    • @ktvx.94
      @ktvx.94 Год назад +26

      I second this and have been thinking about it for a long time. Level depends on growth rate, Exp is a more accurate metric for effort grinding

    • @alexisdipoalo9443
      @alexisdipoalo9443 Год назад +8

      That's not really as good as you think as experience isn't universal. You'll get more of it in different areas and you'll need more of it early than later

    • @xxalsinusxx2038
      @xxalsinusxx2038 Год назад +13

      @@alexisdipoalo9443 it makes a much bigger difference though. 2 Pokemon at the same level but with different growth rates means one needed more EXP than the other but the current system weighs them the same. So a slower growth rate Pokemon finishing the game at the same time as a faster growth rate Pokemon should get rated higher as they did have a harder time getting levels and overcoming it.

    When it comes to competitive, Jynx is at the top for its amazing typing and access to sleep. Electabuzz follows with solid coverage to match its Electric-type moves. Then, after many tiers of better Fire-types, there’s Magmar. I’m expecting the in-game learnsets of these Pokemon and Yellow’s particular difficulty curve to be what shakes up these Pokémon’s performance compared to competitive, but Psychic is super hard for many Pokemon to deal with.

    Love how this is about the Punch Trio and yet two of them don't even wind up using the punches because of when they get them from level up. So silly. Electibuzz and Jynx both get access to Thunderbolt and Icebeam so it doesn't even matter. Also can we just talk about Lovely Kiss just being the second best sleep move in the game and just abusing the hell out of it.

    What's interesting is the first games were never created with the intention of using some pokemon that early because in a regular playthrough you would never be able to get them. With Brock being such a huge road block for a lot of late game pokemon, Ive always wondered what these playthroughs might look like with level up learn move pools from other games were game freak took into consideration that peoole might import low level pokemon so they gave them a back log of level up moves because it was now possible to breed, etc.

    • @davidestabrooks211
      @davidestabrooks211 Год назад +1

      @@davidestabrooks211 the level curves are fine, I just see them species quirks, the move pools are where I feel the biggest problem. Since I also don't have access to Growlithe, I didn't have much option in Fire types and Magmar became my standard and favorite Fire pk.
    Vulpix? Look to cute and fragile. Flareon? C'mon, I playing Blue, if I allowed to chose types of curse I chose Vaporeon. Moltres? Legendarys are overpowered and came in high level, seems cheating.

    Glad you noted how beastly Ninetales is at the end. Fire type really isn't that terrible in and of itself, even in early gens, but most fire types are held back by being split attackers with rather shallow movepools in RBY. Being a middling type with a harsh start, a harsh finish and No Flamethrower TM makes for a disheatening situation, despite the strengths. Ninetales and Flareon though, this is the point at which they have the best stats they ever will have.
    Despite my fire type apologism, I thought Magmar would likely be B rank too. Also I expected more Confuse Ray strats to wreck problem pokemon. It's almost as good as Sing in a way for hazing out a pokemon, and you love your Sleep strats. But it's less reliable for the long beatdowns and you very clearly didn't need it. Impressive, really.

I personally really like the evasion clause and although you spoke to why it’s allowed i think it taints the run in a way that jynx does not experience. like if you had to strategize a way out of the fights doubleteam is required in it would obviously add a huge dent in time for magmar and electabuzz. jynx to me seems to be the most consistent based on sheer power and typing alone and the least dependent on cheese strats

    So fun fact: in the Pokemon index for gen 1, there is a cut yeti pokemon that appears to be intended to be the third member of the Electabuzz Magmar trio, as it is directly in between them in the index.
    One interesting thing about gen 1, particularly when looking at the cut pokemon, is how many fire, electric, and ice/water trios there are . Eeveelutions, the birds, Rapidash and Seaking were originally three stage families with an electric tiger pokemon, similarly Pikachu and Vulpix appear to be trio with a fish pokemon. Fire lightning ice is a classic JRPG trio that doesn't work in Pokemon, which is why I think it kind of disappeared after gen 2's babies and legendary dogs.

Even if it skews an entire type of mons. Brock does the same thing by gate keeping mons without access to special moves in their early learnset

So what I did was after Celodon and buying vitamins for the special stats, then when I had to go to pokemon tower, I fought every ghastly trainer and added at least 20 wild ghastly. That increased my special a decent amount. Giving charizard the health to be a three hit to Gyarados's hydro pump. I used three rare candies right after Giovanni and then the rest before Lance. Man your videos are great. The way you optimize your additional playthroughs to give the given Pokémon it’s best shot at a good time. With optimizations in mind, would you ever consider trying a series where you have a single level 100 Pokémon, best stats in DVs and IVs, a gauntlet where they have one shot to steamroll the elite 4 with no heals and no PP restores. Straight up brute force the whole league with no healing of any kind. That would be optimization to the extreme. Looking forward to the December series.

    When you mention running evolutionary lines, have you put any thought into delaying evolution to learn moves faster? Because I have; most notably, Squirtle learns Bite at level 22, but Wartortle doesnt learn it till... 24 I think? But if Squirtle learns it and then evolves, then it can beat Misty at level 22; where as a Level 23 Wartortle without Bite will have trouble beating Misty. Unless you just use Mega Punch or something I guess, I don't know, I don't use TMs or do solo runs... Might be relevant in FR/LG where Bite is Dark type though.

    I think that's good that double-team tm is banned, but I feel like banning it and minimize completely is unfair for pokemon that learn it "naturally". Additionally, allowing it for some pokemon during Giovanni fight damages the consistency of your rules so I think it would be better for the series if it wasn't an "exception", but just allowed with mimic.
    Setting it up and praying costs you time anyway so there might be better strategies. It's also not bad that there exist moves that are overpowered. In my opinion it just makes pokemon who learn them special in those games.

    @ScottsThoughtsPokemon Sorry i know this comment isnt relavent here.
    But have you put any thought into what future moves back ported Pokémon get?
    In a nutshell I feel like back ported Pokémon should only recieve future moves if they are the only Pokémon of the generation they are introduced in to get that move in their level up moveset, regardless if a few older polemon get it, or if later it become more prevalent. IE Heracross should get Megahorn because no other gen 2 polemon get it despite Nidoking also learning it. This is a key part to the Pokemon as its inteoduced.
    Meanwhile Spiritomb shouldn't get Astonish because it was widly distributed in gen 3, a whole gen before its intoduction.
    Id love to hear Scott's thoughts.

    Fire types and Electric types are interesting because both are using confined to their STAB and Normal type moves. The difference is Fire has Flamethrower as a late learnable move which is nice in a mono type team run, but hurts compared to most other types that have a TM to learn their most consistent attack. Electric types do get Thunderbolt as a Gym TM but then they have almost no answer to the many Rock/Ground Pokemon. Those characteristics make Electric still suffer for Monotype team runs and solo challenges. Ice would make a better monotype team because there are more mid-level moves but the Pokemon are so far between and late game that it's not a viable playthrough, but the mid game Ice Beam helps all of the Ice type Pokemon.

    Hey Scott, I noticed some weirdness with the voice over at around 39:45. "Do remember, it finished the safari zone whereas Jynx hasn't" feels like a line that was intended for Magmar, but the line was delivered right after Jynx's defeat of Erica instead of Magmar's victory over Erica.

    So my prediction is going to have to be Jynx. Having a 75% accurate sleeping move just sounds so very broken in Gen 1, and Ice and Psychic are two of the strongest special typings in the game.
    That said, I think Magmar starting with Ember will give it an early lead, as it won't have to train as much for Brock since it'll do pretty good damage against his Rock types.

    “Let’s go over what makes it a pokemon”
    Well, for one, it can shoot fire from its mouth and punch you with a flaming fist.
    And this one can blow up your brain with literal psychic powers.
    But go on

    Jynx is my initial favourite. She has a good sleep move, stab psychic & blizzard (or Ice Beam earlier in the playthrough where the extra pp can save time), and if I'm not mistaken starts off pretty good in the move pool department too with double slap being decent early. Electabuz and Magmar can get through most things with their moves and stats too, but won't have access to a second super high damaging move or a sleep option. They are better defensively and will do more with Body Slam, but 75 or 100 % accurate sleep moves are just so overpowered on Pokemon that aren't otherwise terrible.

    Somewhat surprising outcome honestly, though its a shame the punches didn't get much use. Honestly it would be cool to see a for fun run of the game implementing both egg moves, as well as the punches at the beginning. Then we could actually see which puncher sits at peak performance, and have an actual punch out. If egg moves were involved it could give the loser a bit of an edge.

    i also wonder how going in against brock at a lower level with jynx would shave off some time in that first split. if the lovely kiss bide strategy is next to fool proof is it possible to make it out faster with slightly less HP and damage but less grinding

    I think Swift may actually be able to Gen I miss. I saw Swift miss before in the Japanese Pokemon Stadium (which I think has identical mechanics to the original Red/Green, including Blizzard's 30% freeze chance). I don't know if it's one of the things they changed for Red/Blue/Yellow, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't.

    Is there a way you could put damage calcs on this overlay? Maybe the ability toggle the effective power portion to damage calcs whenever you need to see what actually does more damage? Would be sweet.

    Perhaps I am missing something, but should the Jynx not have had more resets on its second run because of the intentional black-out training before Brock? Even if it’s intentional, should those not count for resets?

    Hey Scott, love your work. If there's one piece of feedback I would give, I think you should reevaluate your opinion on Double Edge, objectively. Instead of thinking about it like "Recoil is unnecessarily bad" think of it like "I saved myself a turn of getting attacked for X avg dmg, by spending Y hp." Your HP is a resource, you shouldn't be scared to spend it on doing more damage, especially if by doing so, it means you overall take _less_ damage.
