Well, you see Scott, we at gamefreak knew that Horn drill would be useless on such a slow pokemon so we gave it Leer, a move that actually doesn't always fail, five levels after it. See? It makes perfect sense!
I really appreciate that you've re-edited the Gym Leader introductions so that when they appear in full colour after sliding in darkness, the little musical stab coincides with it. It's just so satisfying to watch this little dramatic staccato punctuation. It used to only happen with Brock, but now they all have this little feature! It's a testament to you and your editor! Great play and great video as always. Rhydon is my favourite of all pokemon and I think you did the baby boy justice.

I’ve loved rhyhorn since 1999. I hated the back sprite, but loved the design - it actually looked like a monster. But never used it in a play through of gen 1, it was accessible too late, and yeah - that move set … thank you for doing a rhyhorn run! And I love the evolution of your channel, and the stats in the surround are epic, you nailed it. Plus, may lord helix forgive you.
wow, Rhyhorn did it despite having a hard time with outspeeding things , and the lack of accurate rock moves, that it even resorted to using special moves .Its really proud of you , because that run was really good . Having the right knowledge about the stat experience system was saving you a ton of resets throughout both runs . Well done! 👏👏👏 By the way Ryhorn's nickname is better then it's Japanese name , saifon .😂 and also, thanks for making awesome videos for us like this everyday , I always wait to watching them , because they always give me motivation to work, so thanks for that . ☺
Yeah, I'm even proud of my first playthrough with it. Two years ago I would have had like 50 resets and taken 5-6 hours. I'm so glad my work has paid off! Also, thank you so much for the kind words. I'm so happy that my videos matter to you
Rhyhorn and Rhydon, maybe by the nature of being the first ones designed look like the most...Pokemon of pokemon Like you could show it to a friend or your mom and you'd be able to explain what the basic idea of pokemon is just from them looking at the scowling rock rhino Also riding them looks like fun and also literal pain in the ass. My god I'm so impressed with ryhorn! That was a really good time for the little stone doggo :D I'm loving all this content Scott, I hope you keep it up but make sure you look after yourself and have fun with your fiancée from time to time. I'll always be waiting for the next upload regardless of how long it takes!
During the Giovanni gym fight you could use dig and dugtrio could use dig. Since you are slower you would win that battle since you are slower. Not consistent, but that would be the best scenario I believe. Great video though! Keep up the good work!
I was so nervous this whole video! Hahaha. This was actually a tough challenge. I’m surprised of the outcome. I didn’t think that would be the case at all. But soon as you didn’t buy the max carbos I knew it would be an issue in the end. Still your strategy worked to perfection. I never realized how low the speed and the special are on this thing! I honestly never realized it. No wonder growing up no matter what moves I had and level he never did as good as he could with special attacks and why even first stage pokemon would always move first lol. Good video though! Can’t wait for the next one! If I can make a request do a head to head with jynx and mr. mime. I know I’ve asked like 50 times and I’m not really a huge fan of either but I feel like it would make for good content and those two Pokémon go together so seeing which would win would be cool to me! Honestly I believe it would be jynx just because of the ice type/moves. Keep up the great work brother! I know you read all the comments so I apologize for this one being a novel!
Scott, on the first attempt when geovanni's dugtrio used dig, you could have used dig as well. Since your pokémon was slower than dugtrio, you should have avoid damage and hit the dugtrio too.
And no matter what others say, but Erika is genuinly difficult in this Game. She profits so much from Razor Leaf, non-Special Split, and Bind. But its yellow so shes pretty nerved luckily.
Commenting before premiere. I'm expecting this one to be very interesting. There will be portions of the game that Rhyhorn just steamrolls; high HP and Defense mean that Rhyhorn tanks physical hits well, and high Attack means it can dish out good damage. On the other hand, between low Speed, low Special, being in the Slow level-up group, and having two double-weaknesses that are both Special, there will also be portions where Rhyhorn struggles mightily. While it does have access to Thunderbolt and Fire Blast, those don't really help; Rhyhorn's Special is too low to take advantage of them, plus Fire Blast comes too late to be a good option against Grass-types anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if a Thunderbolt from Rhyhorn can't even OHKO any of the Gyarados it has to face, despite the double-weakness. Not helping the cause, Rhyhorn has no access to moves to let it set up the Badge Boost Glitch. I expect that Rhyhorn is mostly just going to have to depend on Body Slam and its STAB moves. Luckily, it does get Rock Slide, Dig, and Earthquake by TM, and Rock + Ground is a pretty good STAB combo, even considering Rock Slide's middling power and annoyingly-imperfect accuracy. Also, I'm expecting the Brock split to be less than ideal, since Rhyhorn literally has no options for that part of the game other than "spam Horn Attack".
As soon as he said jolteon won't be challenging, double kick and being outsped instantly came to mind. Haven't finished the video yet, but I'm gonna guess it's going to be a issue.
A very rare appearance for the route east of Vermillion City and Digletts cave. You hardly ever see it or the other eastern routes that link Lavender Town to Fuchsia City.
incredible!! you know what scott? rhyhorn wasn't really that bad. very good considering its typing! you know, rock pokemon on the whole have strong attack and defense, at least in this generation, so the trick for rhyhorn was only the level, to be at a high enough level for outspeeding some threatening Pkemon, right? great job with rhyhorn! Rhydon probably will do even better, I suppose!
As good as Yellow's Pokémon sprites usually are, Onix's face will always be funny to me. It looks like he just discovered Pokémon R34 for the first time.
What the hell?! I played this game for over two decades and I never knew Rhyhorn could learn Thunderbolt! I learned that Rhydon could learn *SURF* before I found out Rhyhorn could learn freaking *THUNDERBOLT!*
I always liked Rhyhorn as a kid, and at first didn't understand why it auto lost to so many special attacks. It had so much defense, and as long as I stayed away from Water and Grass stuff, I wouldn't have a double weakness right? This was children me not knowing that special was also special defense, and also thinking that Psychic Pokemon were even more dope than they actually are. Soon after, I figured out how those valued actually worked, but for a little bit there was definitely more than a little bewilderment, especially since Rhyhorn came from the special Safari zone and was well, supposed to be special. He still is, but there was a learning experience for sure and it was the first time where I began to use math in the real world.
I always wonder how many of your viewers know why you pick the Dome Fossil. I assume it's because of Twitch Plays Pokemon. I remember participating in it when they did that first run of Pokemon Red. It was such a unique experience, and the community that sprung up during it was great to be a part of. I'd love to hear you share your experience with it in a video sometime! Also praise Lord Helix!
The reason why Instant KO moves are innacruate or useless usually is that was kind of how RPG balanced their Instant Death moves. Thought of very accuate Instand Death attack on enemies would have been on Game Freak's mind and Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori's Dragon Quest 2(The game that inspired the trading mechanic and gambling in Pokemon) as that one has a very reliable one known as Sacrifice or Kamikaze depending on the version and one of the Random encounter enemies that drops the Mad Cap has the Spell. So there may also be a grudge there too.
My theory on gen 1 movesets is that they're intentionality shallow to amplify the value of the trainer. This was gen 1 after all, and pokemon was still figuring itself out. An electric type wild pokemon is cool but you as the trainer make it valuable with thunderbolt.
Rhyhorn is one of those pokemon that I never used for a very long time. There are always other rock/ground types that you encounter much earlier in the game and I usually caught a geodude in the early gens. Eventually I finally used one and really liked it. Its speed and special stats are terrible, but it's really good at what it does and you didn't need to trade to get to its final evolution. They changed that in gen 4, but that just made rhydon better if you're in a game with an eviolite. I still only rarely use it, but I really like it. It can also get some pretty interesting moves.
I genuinly love Rhyhorn. Of all the gen-1 rock types it has my favorate design, although the gen-1 sprites kinda suck. Unfortunatly, I've always found Rhydon a disapointing evolution. It's just too smooth and I miss those angular plates it had as a Rhyhorn. I am, however, maybe one of the few people that actually likes Rhyperior.
When someone thinks Rhyhorn/Rhydon/Golem are terrible it's worth reminding them what was the second most powerful pokemon type in generation 1. And how it was walled to hell by Ground/Rock types with perfect coverage and high power. Rhydon was INSANE in gen 1. And Rhyhorn has higher attack than some of the fully evolved physical attackers so it's quite decent.
