Hello Scott and Denis! I'm glad I get to catch the premiere this week! I had to watch last week's video a day late, but not this time! I've always thought Gyarados was one of the coolest looking Pokemon, but I don't ever remember being impressed by it as a kid. I'll be curious to see what it can do in your expert hands!
Pokemon Yellow was the first game I played, and Gyarados was the first Pokemon I got to level 100 (from a level 5 Magikarp no less). The nostalgia is so real...
@@Karamuto I don't think he'd remember it as something special if he used the dupe glitch to feed it rare candies though (i don't remember the first pokemon I did that on).
Have you ever thought about putting the current opponent’s move set on screen? Next to your current move set and PP maybe? Just an idea. I love your vids man, keep up the great work!
I've wanted to add opponent team, a tooltip describing the trainer (items, ai, notable facts), the Pokemon's movesets, and their stats. I wanted to do this in August 2021. I implemented it a bit in December 2021/January 2022 but I didn't like the aesthetic and felt it needed a visual over haul. I'm working on re-implementing it but other things like finishing the videos on time have taken priority.
Considering the ranges, the 200 BP being a 33% boost would probably been enough or required minimum level up at best while being far, far most consistent.
How bad could Gyarados be? 1:20 Oof, I never knew that. This is gonna suck. .-. 1:47 Imagine the look on the Lass's face, since she could've taken down a behemoth like Gyarados. 12:00 Okay, I know I saw the PokeManiac's art in the Nidoran run video - unless it appeared early, I may have forgotten - but I think this is the first instance that the Status Condition Jr. Trainer got artwork! (Unless I'm wrong, correct me if so!) I also never commented on it before now, but I love that the Selfdestructing Hiker is holding a bomb! Sarina has done a great job on all of those pictures she's drawn for your channel! 13:32 Although it would be incredibly silly, its fins could function for Wing Attack. At least the second attempt went better. 21:21 Okay, those little edits made me chuckle. XD 48:06 Pretty good run of Gyarados! If that's foreshadowing to a Red/Blue run, I'll be looking forward to that! BONUS 50:49 Okay, the Ice cream mistake was pretty funny. XD
@@shadowdragon714 I can't remember >~< Once I get to that area I do the mew glitch with everyone from cerulean cape to the park past Vermillion - you can get a lvl7 gengar and chansey in there, and pretty sure one missingno for early item duping (I remember it being a vulpix, and could be redone as long as you let the vulpix ko you)
There's a gen 1 thing where you can use the daycare to overwrite HM moves with levelup moves since it automatically replaces them. Would you consider using that in a run? The daycare might be a little against the spirit of the challenge, but it'd be cool to see the moveset flexibility sometimes.
Tbf, aside from balancing issues, Lockstin's video on the dragons has a reasonable theory on why Gyarados isn't a Dragon type (Chinese dragons that abuse their power can be demoted to mere flying serpents by the gods). But still, I love this water serpent either way. Lance, Cyrus and Lysandre made Gyarados so damn cool these days. Hands down my favorite Gen 1 Pokemon of all time, even though it's EXTREMELY common in many casual playthroughs.
Ah yes, everyone’s second favorite Pokemon that should totally be a Dragon type. I’m predicting that Gyarados will start a bit poorly, due to poor level up moves and the Slow growth rate, but will catch up once you start getting TM’s, especially since it’s great stats were even better in RBY. Though not having a decent buffing move will keep it from being top tier.
Gyarados being a flying type instead of a dragon type always baffled me. Also I remember the anime making Dragon rage seem like a super powerful move when in reality it's trash lol
One thing I would love is seeing more footage, OR graphics, showing the routing and environments and other cute information from the games outside of the battles.
I'd love to show more footage, but then the videos would be like 2 hours long, or they would be a bunch of rapidly flashing lights... I'm going to make a VODs channel and upload un-cut runs with my live commentary in case people are curious.
0:10 Okay, never relized that Gyarados and Cloyster was that short off from the ledgendary birds base totals. Or that Dragonite had HIGHER base total then the birds at the time.
For your considera tion: 4x weakness is definitely a reason to delay fighting Surge, but 2x weakness isn't always. Water types often (not always) have very good special. I was talking to someone about this when they were surprised that Raichu lost to Vaporeon in a Gen 1 battle. I wasn't surprised. Vaporeon has HP, Special, and to a lesser extent Defense. Raichu mostly has speed.
I loved gyarados when growing up. It was my first favorite Pokémon and dethroned much later only by suicune. Anyways I always belly-ached about how it didn't get dragon typing too but supposedly Japanese see dragons as creatures of honor at least within the title dragon. So because gyarados are so known to lose control of their tempers they are demoted to water/flying instead of water/dragon.
Mimic earthquake from sandslash for magneton should be 200 power vs it compared to 150 hyper beam and earthquake gives you more options vs the rest of his team.
I find it interesting that despite Yellow being harder than Red/Blue both from the learnset nerf and the Elite 4 having better move sets, you still performed so well with only 11 minutes behind Jrose110's Gyarados run, and that is without an optimal run yourself. Dragon Rage alone would have trivialized most of the early game.
Ah Gyarados. Or, should I say "Water Onix". In all of the Generations, Gen 2 Gyarados is the worst version sadly due to not having any good Physical coverage options and the Special stat split happening, dropping its 100 Special Attack down to 60. But, past that, Gyarados is a powerhouse in any other Generation, even in Generation 1 due to its solid Special stat and wide coverage. Especially Dragon Dance, move coverage options in Power Whip for Rotom-Wash (Yes. It gets that in Gen 8), Stone Edge for Zapdos, Earthquake for any grounded Electric types, Bounce for Flying STAB, and Waterfall's 20% Flinch rate in later Generations.
I don't think I've ever played gen 1 without a Gyarados 😝 I can't imagine not using this bad boy. Same with Abra/Alakazam. They're the epitome of what being a pokemon trainer is about: sticking with your fish through thick and thin until that loyalty is rewarded with a versatile beast of a pokemon!
Some people don't have the patience to grind a Magikarp. Especially the type to run through the game with a single Pokemon as if they were a digimon tamer instead 😋
A bit out of what you do but would you consider doing an eevee run where you evolved him once you have access to the stones? would make for a quite good comparison video
The art of the poke maniac at 12:04 made me do a double take cause I thought you used the pic of your fiance and I was think uh oh Scott's in trouble lol.
(also, toward the end, after the bloopers, i think "Oak-kay, how do we do?" or "Oak-kay, here we go!" or something to that effect would be a neat way to introduce the segment...like, as a regular thing, or until it gets too cheesy/repetitive)
Really should have mimicked EQ on the sandslash for the champion fight. Moveset would be mimic (EQ), surf, thunderbolt, hyper beam. The blizzard for exeggutor wasn’t needed because good AI would just use leech seed and it would take a bit to t bolt/hyper beam to take it down but you wouldn’t lose to it. Then you’d have coverage for everything else for the easy win. Otherwise great video as always
Damn that's some real man shit going out of your way to reply to a fan, you were just like BOOM gonna reply imma reply to this man. Ps, (I don't mean to pester you, and thanks for the info)
Hyper beam felt so incredible to use in the first two gens. The screen flashing, the slow mighty beam, and that sound effect really sold it as something awesome. Why not mimic earthquake to beat Magneton?
Hey Scott, as you get through the dex of gen 1 I've been having bets with myself as to who will be quickest and earn the top tier spot. Contenders are poliwhirl (amnesia will be huge), mewtwo obvs, although it learns its best moves too late, and mew. On watching this though dragonite has jumped, has a much better solution to brock and the same movepool with better stats. Lorelei may be a problem though! Looking forward to seeing them all, keep up the good work!
For Dragonie, starting with Wrap slows it down a ton, and there's nothing great to take on Agatha. It's good but nowhere near the top unfortunately. Starmie will be good but its Special might be a bit too low.
I always struggled to decide if I wanted to use Gyarados or Cloyster in my playthroughs but I didn't realize until now they even tied in base stats too lol honestly I think the only reason Gyarados is a flying type at all is because it it was a Dragon or even a pure Water type Game freak thought it would be too overpowered. Especially since you can get one early on. But on another note, I love the fact that in PLA you can find a flying Gyarados.
Oh no, please don't wish for Gyara to have been Water/Dragon. It would have had zero weaknesses in this gen! It's everywhere in all games and I'm glad it's flying type so that I can deal with it on opposing teams
Hi Scott. I love your videos! If you have time then I have a recommendation: Do two generation 1 playthroughs. In the first use each gym leader's weakest pokemon. In the second use their ace. Compare your times once you are done. What do you think?
Is it really smart to skip the trainers in Mt.Moon for Slow growth rate Pokemon? It's currently 1.36am so my thought process probably isint at it's best anymore but I'd assume training in there would save some time in the mid to late game?
It seems off since at Lv20, Misty is going to be way faster due to Bite. There's a lot of really easy trainers to pick off in Mt. Moon that are EXP sponges like the Hiker. Bide is a very RNG strategy that Misty generally avoids feeding into, sadly.
Bide is totally fine in this case. Much faster. Either harder or tackle from Starmie and Bide bypasses the defense boosts. No reason to trainer after grinding for so long to beat Brock. If brock was easy to defeat training in Mt Moon would make more sense.
Gyarados is such an amazing Pokemon! Great Immunity(except Stealth Rocks), Intimidate, just an awesome design! I'm really hoping it finally gets its Gen 1 OU Status in the still in development/ongoing RBY metagame!
Another successful job Scott! You're so cool! But let me just tell you one thing, if you mimicked earthquake against the champion wouldn't it be easier for you to beat Magneton? I was just wondering about it ...
As a frequent Gyarados user, it got screwed over big time in the special split in GSC. It's special attack should've been at least 75, but 60 is just such a brutal nerf.....

@@skateboardious Ive just never found it necessary in FRLG, even nuzlocking, almost every important battle has an encounter that walls them entirely. I just think Starmie uses the super wide move pool better, being that it has much better special attack.
I cant help but use gyarados in almost every game with physical/special split . Especially rom hacks with higher difficulties. Intimate, dragon dance , massive sp def and the fact he's a water type is just so good.
@@Kurzwife yea but I was talking about vanilla FRLG. EQ Gyarados isn't as good in those games since you can't use it on Agatha's ghost types due to levitate, and for everything else a super effective move is probably gonna be better. I solo'd the whole e4 in with a Starmie in a hardcore nuzlocke lol.
Great stuff as always Scott. It is becoming increasingly apparent that a lack of badge boost options can really hurt higher tier mons final times. The optimisation on this run was enjoyable none the less. Keep it up mate!!
Actually caught the premier on time this week. Very much love your content Scott. The strive for perfection makes my adhd brain happy.
i just wanna mention how much i appreciate all the Subtle details in the editing for these videos...specifically, i mean things like at 21:30, the way Magneton's Cry sounds, as the image pops up onscreen...or how just about every '69' or '4/20' that appears onscreen usually has a teeny-tiny ^(nice!) next to it...i just like how you made the effort to put those "easter eggs" in, almost as much as i like finding them lol
ooh, also 31:24 to 31:45-- against the Dragonite/Dragonair xD
I always want the viewing experience to be fun!
Been looking forward to this one! Top tier video as usual!
You hands down have the best production.
Thanks so much Yaahaali! Working really hard to make each video as engaging as possible!
earthquake misplay aside watching Mr. fish's wild ride was a joy to see out of most of the gen 1 playthroughs.
learned something new in a pokemon video props doesnt happen often but cloyster having such amazing statline compared to the rest like gyrados damn. keep it up
Hello Scott and Denis!
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS YESSSSSS
Love how your videos take me to other content creators. Been checking out Vanman inbetween your uploads. Always great when you drop a video
I'm glad you can find other people through my video! That's the goal.
The art is really enjoyable. The final 4 art has such intimidating poses, I wouldn't mess w/ that Agatha.
I was waiting for the vid i was one of people suggesting it to you. Gya is a monster.
I always used this dragon even I. Gen one. It was one of the few backsprites that didn't look horrible. Good work you did this Pokemon justice.
Pokemon Yellow was the first game I played, and Gyarados was the first Pokemon I got to level 100 (from a level 5 Magikarp no less).
The nostalgia is so real...
That’s awesome! Especially going from level 5-100 with a slow growth rate Pokemon!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon depends on if he leveled it actually or used the missingno item glitch 😄
@@Karamuto I don't think he'd remember it as something special if he used the dupe glitch to feed it rare candies though (i don't remember the first pokemon I did that on).
@@Karamuto in yellow that's unreal it's hard getting a pokemon to level 100 unless you keep grinding or some type of code you can to do that
@@Karamuto lol it sounds like they were a kid, probably didn’t know how to do the glitch
That battle versus the Champion, with your narration of course, had me rolling laughing!!!
31:57
Have you ever thought about putting the current opponent’s move set on screen? Next to your current move set and PP maybe? Just an idea. I love your vids man, keep up the great work!
I've wanted to add opponent team, a tooltip describing the trainer (items, ai, notable facts), the Pokemon's movesets, and their stats. I wanted to do this in August 2021. I implemented it a bit in December 2021/January 2022 but I didn't like the aesthetic and felt it needed a visual over haul. I'm working on re-implementing it but other things like finishing the videos on time have taken priority.
Not saying it's better but since you didn't mention it, did you damage test mimic on Sandslash's Earthquake for magneton?
XD
16:42 Oof, what a turn around... You almost had Erika too!
21:50 And I thought Gyarados would breeze through this fight... At least the second attempt went better.
21:21 Okay, those little edits made me chuckle. XD
48:06 Pretty good run of Gyarados! If that's foreshadowing to a Red/Blue run, I'll be looking forward to that!
BONUS
50:49 Okay, the Ice cream mistake was pretty funny. XD
Thank you for the flashing lights warnings, it's appreciated
Holy shit I made a premiere. I just hope Sacred Fire/Aeroblast Broken Smeargle is in the pipeline.
*Gamefreak, why TF doesn't Gyarados learn Thrash???
I love catching my level 7 gyarados with the Mew glitch in red/blue- so OP
which pokemon do you need to face in order to get Gyarados to appear instead of mew?
@@shadowdragon714 I can't remember >~<
Once I get to that area I do the mew glitch with everyone from cerulean cape to the park past Vermillion - you can get a lvl7 gengar and chansey in there, and pretty sure one missingno for early item duping (I remember it being a vulpix, and could be redone as long as you let the vulpix ko you)
@@AmataTai the only issue with doing that to get certain pokémon is that their level up movesets are trash lol.
@@HomeCookinMTG since Magikarp has nothing, this one of the times it's strictly superior XD
I would've never expected for gyarados to be slower then poliwag 😲😂
There's a gen 1 thing where you can use the daycare to overwrite HM moves with levelup moves since it automatically replaces them. Would you consider using that in a run? The daycare might be a little against the spirit of the challenge, but it'd be cool to see the moveset flexibility sometimes.
Feel like that would waste time
Tbf, aside from balancing issues, Lockstin's video on the dragons has a reasonable theory on why Gyarados isn't a Dragon type (Chinese dragons that abuse their power can be demoted to mere flying serpents by the gods).
But still, I love this water serpent either way. Lance, Cyrus and Lysandre made Gyarados so damn cool these days.
Hands down my favorite Gen 1 Pokemon of all time, even though it's EXTREMELY common in many casual playthroughs.
Maybe thats true,in ancient wars gyarados was said to come down and destroy everytging on its path
Or so does some pokedex entry say
I love the Rappin' Lass Image! That flow she got.
Such flow.
07:18 I don't know why but after you spiralized around the stairs I laughed a lot 😂😂😂😂😂
I was always confused as to why Gyarados doesn't learn flying moves; the only one it ever learns down the Gens is... *Bounce...* Just Bounce...
Grass electric venomoth.. the bane to all water/flying types. I’m proud of you to defeat the brick wall!
0:10
Okay, never relized that Gyarados and Cloyster was that short off from the ledgendary birds base totals.
Delaying the battle post tunnel is better, but not by that much
I loved gyarados when growing up.
If Gastly, having no fists, can learn Ice Punch, then Gyarados should be able to learn Wing Attack or Fly.
Fact
Mimic earthquake from sandslash for magneton should be 200 power vs it compared to 150 hyper beam and earthquake gives you more options vs the rest of his team.
I find it interesting that despite Yellow being harder than Red/Blue both from the learnset nerf and the Elite 4 having better move sets, you still performed so well with only 11 minutes behind Jrose110's Gyarados run, and that is without an optimal run yourself. Dragon Rage alone would have trivialized most of the early game.
8:49 i feel like after the 3rd, maybe even the 2nd, harden water gun would do more damage with it's higher base power and stab
i love the extra professor oak battles at the end
0:25 - ye know, that Gyra backsprite actually reminds me a lot of magikarp, so they did something right with it
Ah Gyarados.
There was a decorated General with a heart of gold
That likened him to all the stories he told
Of past battles won and lost
And legends of old…
First time seeing back sprite?? You didn't grind a karp as kid?? Man that was such a great experience to FINALLY get Dos.
Gyarados is my fav Pokemon - SO HYPE
Goddamn, the "peck" discussion was easily the peak of this video.
After over 20 years, I STILL learn about hidden items in gen 1. Never knew about the rare candy on cycling road!
I also have zero idea of the type effectiveness differences between ground & rock as most gen 1 rock types were also ground type.
wouldn't mimicing Earthquake for Magneton be better?
(also, toward the end, after the bloopers, i think "Oak-kay, how do we do?" or "Oak-kay, here we go!" or something to that effect would be a neat way to introduce the segment...like, as a regular thing, or until it gets too cheesy/repetitive)
49:00 Heck, it doesn't even need Hydro Pump. Just starting with Dragon Rage would be more than enough to beat Brock in 2-3 moves.
I was thinking how this would be even close to a challenge, and I was like Gyarad-oooooooooooooh when I remembered the starting moveset
I love the trainer art your friend added. Nice work! Send her my regards please
In Red/Blue, Gyarados will finish the game with an in-game time of between 3:20 and 3:30 at level 55, Jrose11 did a run with Gyarados
Hey Scott I was wondering if the solo swampert video is gonna happen I love watching you figure out a new region
Eventually. Gen 3 is coming back soon.
Damn that's some real man shit going out of your way to reply to a fan, you were just like BOOM gonna reply imma reply to this man.
Ps, (I don't mean to pester you, and thanks for the info)
What if you would have just used mimic to mimic earthquake? Would that have helped better against the magneton?
It survives (sometimes)
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon that sucks. Great video
I always struggled to decide if I wanted to use Gyarados or Cloyster in my playthroughs but I didn't realize until now they even tied in base stats too lol honestly I think the only reason
Gyarados is a flying type at all is because it it was a Dragon or even a pure Water type Game freak thought it would be too overpowered. Especially since you can get one early on.
But on another note, I love the fact that in PLA you can find a flying Gyarados.
I want to scream: "Mimic Earthquake to take out Magneton!" at the end. The tunnel vision is strong on this one.
Soon.
Neat idea!
did you test using mimic for earthquake in the champion battle?
it survives - sometimes
Gyarados was really done dirty in the first few generations, one of, if not the biggest winners of the Physical Special Split.
