How easy will Pokemon Red be for Gyarados?

Playthrough Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle*
3. No glitches or exploits*
4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
Other rules:
-- *Pokeballs & Pokedolls are allowed in battle
-- *The badge-boost glitch is not restricted at all
-- *Skipping the Rocket Hideout & Marowak is allowed

-- Skipping the bike is not allowed
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
*Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- The TM can be purchased in Celadon
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
-- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining
-- Only two Pokemon learn Double-Team through level up: Pikachu & Scyther
-- Minimize is the other evasion raising move, these Pokemon learn it through level up:
-- Clefairy, Clefable, Grimer, Muk, Chansey, Staryu

-- Lose in the lab: Vaporeon
-- Win in the lab and skip route 22: Flareon*
-- Win in both locations: Jolteon
-- *You cannot lose on route 22 because you blackout
Terms:
-- STAB
-- Same-Type-Attack-Bonus - a 1.5x damage multiplier
-- Stat Experience
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of effort values. You can invest in all stats until they max
out at 65535

-- All Trainer Pokemon have EVs of 0
-- Gen 1 Crit Rates: www.smogon.com/rb/articles/cr...
-- Crit rate is determined by dividing base speed by 512
-- High crit rate moves determine their rate by dividing base speed by 64
-- All crits have a 1/256 to fail, even if the rate is 100%
-- Crits don't multiple damage by 2, it's a formula based on level

Scott and JRose, "I'm going to skip Surge and come back when I'm stronger."
Also Scott and JRose, "Wow, Surge is so easy! We should demote him!"
Finally! Now this felt like the Gyarados I remember from my childhood. A minimum battle eldritch horror that destroys anything it encounters. I have such fond memories of my second Blue playthrough ever, where I bought the magikarp at Mt Moon, switchtrained it to a Gyarados on the SS Anne and just swept the entire game, which was a true accomplishment as a 10 year old with very limited knowledge of the english language.
This video felt like proper redemption for this incredible Leviathan.
Gyarados has always been my favorite
When you hinted at this run on your other video, I had no idea you’d have it out so quick! It is so crazy the differences between Yellow and R/B. Do you feel like your optimizations you did in Yellow helped you in this run?
As a producer myself you film everything ahead of time and at the same time. The key is how you market it. Scott probably filmed them at the same time when he thought about using Gyrados the first time
Filmed the first Gyarados video and then started producing this right after. Then I looped back around and made yellow part 2 the day after the first one went live. Then it took like a month until I was satisfied with my routing to be able to a follow up playthrough and release the video.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon there we go then.
It is interesting to me how Pokemon were nerfed in regards to these challenge runs between Red/Blue and Yellow because they removed some of the duplicate moves in their level-up learnsets.
3:34 “after I smash the final lass”. Interesting word choice, Scott.
On a serious note, seeing gyarados unleash its atrocious rage on Pokémon warms my heart. The water flying dark dragon was finally vindicated!
;D
That cut from the outside of Erica’s gym into Koga’s gym was very smooth.
I love the Gyarados art inspired by its original Red/Green sprite in this video
I'm going to mention this because I'm sure this is something you put a lot of effort into and not everyone will notice right away: I really like your editing. Like in general it's good but in this video I really noticed some really clever editing moves. Like in the second run especially. First wild Pokémon encounter? Straight up shows the Brock battle. It's the little things but I really did notice it and really liked it.
I’ve switched up my workflow starting with this video so that the cuts are much better. I’m happy that someone noticed! Expect this to continue. I need to say thanks to VanMan because his editing inspired me to really level mine up.
Ayo Scott's thoughts double feature! So awesome 👏
Agree!!
@@allenstage4597 agree with agreer
I love that you were able to complete this with your yellow knowledge. The subtle differences make a big difference in how both can be played. And it was humorous to see the references made in this video. With the homage to jrose11. Or the misplaced hiker in the league. Was definitely a fun video to watch.
Sweet we get the double feature in red
Didn't expect this run so soon! Love all the work you put into these runs Scott!
Hello Scott and Denis!
Good luck Gary!
You're a good lad, Scott
Your channel, your content and your delivery have really matured and become more complete as time has gone on
Some of the slick transitions between scenes are fantastic, and I find it really relaxing to listen to someone going so in depth into the facts, figures and stats of the games and runs
I wonder how a Gyardos with the Red Move Pool do in Yellow, I feel like the starting moves in Yellow are what held it back
Those routing tools look real awesome, so much better than my ad-hoc spreadsheet ^^
Until I started watching your series, I never realized how huge of a difference there could be between Red/Blue and Yellow, it's quite fascinating
Hold on a minute this isn't a VanMan video 🧐 haha! I'm glad you did this comparison as I watched VanMans alakazam v Gyarados video and then your Pokémon yellow one was mind blowing how much a difference a starting move set can be just because of Brock. Glad you managed to optimise this and show the beast he truly is! 40mins competition time is insane.
Good stuff Scott keep it up as always 😁
Really cool to see you going back to Red and Blue playthroughs with your style now. The Butterfree one’s going to be really fun!
like I said, scary sprites. Great run. I really like how you’re constantly trying to improve routing and optimize everything. It makes repeat challenges like this very enjoyable.
With that starting learnset it's no wonder Blue's Gyarados had Hydro Pump ridiculously early. I always thought it was a specified illegal set GF gave it, like Dragonite with Barrier in Gen 1 or Aerodactyl/Machoke/Machamp with Rock Slide with no TM to teach it/can't learn it in Gen 2, but no apparently not.
Hey Scott, Great Vid as always although I think a more appropriate challenge/test is using pokemon Red's Gyarados moveset in pokemon Yellow. Kinda like how you used the Abra moveset from GSC Versions. Comparing RB to Y doesn't really make much sense they are completely different games. Maybe one for the future for pokemon with improved movesets in RB
Tangela!
You're a gem, Scott 😭 thank you for the consistency in the quality of your content I love this stuff ❤️
Thanks so much adon, I love making these videos. Hopefully October will be a really fun month for the channel!
To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the end of one of Scott’s videos until this one. I always watch while I’m in bed ready to sleep LOL
that was a nice bonus getting 2 scott’s thoughts videos in a couple of days
Hay Scott! Once again, great video, thanks for the content ♥️
Hey, I just wanted to say I really love these videos! I’ve been playing Pokémon for years, and while I have always preferred playing generations 2 and 4, your videos always seem to teach me something new about either a Pokémon or the game itself. Your quality of script and editing really shines and I always find these videos highly entertaining. Keep it up!
I’ve never really done a solo run before, since challenge runs aren’t really my thing (as a full odds shiny hunter), but I really wanted to try one of these! I just started a solo run of gastly on Crystal (it is October) and been having a lot of fun! I’m not really speedrunning it, since I’m not familiar enough with the game for there to even be a point, but it has been a cool challenge run. I can totally see why you enjoy doing these runs so much.
I’m glad you’re having fun doing it in crystal! Taking it easy for the first few runs to learn the game is key. I find the race/times aspect of it what really makes these so addictive for me! I’m just constantly trying to predict what time a Pokémon will get and then do everything I can do get the time as low as is possible.
I don't know if anyone has commented on this, but the in game time for the first run is 47 minutes faster than Jrose11s gyarados attempt. Now, I know this is far more optimized, and has the benefit of 3 more yellow attempts, but that's impressive. Even your optimized yellow time was comparable. Crazy.
awesome video keep up your great content love your videos glad you got two out this week makes my days better
Wow, your dedication to these runs and challenges and your passion for Pokémon in general is unrivaled! Thanks for putting all this work into your videos! 🙂
You’re welcome!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon where would this playthrough rank??
Is this the fastest one ever or no
What an easy (yet epic) sweep! 😊Having a better level up moveset, and less smart ai was the key for gayrados. ☺️
This run was so well played, and it had a kind of chill, because gayrados in red and blue is op op. 😄
I really liked how you've compered between the 2 runs, it was kind insightful, and it's an important aspect of a solo run in general, that I think that needs to be more explored more often. So thanks for doing this, and I wonder if you would continue with this format with onter pokemon as well🤔.
By the way, the thumbnail and classic art of gayrados in the overlay looks super cool. 😁
And thanks for uploading twice this week! 😄
Heh. Gay-rados
*homosexual-rados
@@therustybucket221 yeah, no pun intended, it was probably due to fast typing on phone. Yeah, auto fill/correct has it's odd ways of doing that. 😅🤭😂
But I'll keep it, if it makes people lough. I know that I did. Lol😂😂😂
He is here to seal the deal 👌
I'm here to Dewgong the deal 👌
Scott with back to back bangers!
Whoa really wasn't expecting this! Two videos back to back, awesome.
But wow, what a time difference. Starting moveset and a generally easier game really do make the difference huh.
This is at 4x speed to right? So 13 minutes is almost an hour of real time.
Yeah, 4x speed for both.
Believe it or not this guy is underrated he puts in sooooo much efffort amd also whats wid all gfs loving horror films
Wow those programs are so cool! Also it was cool seeing u on paraspectre's channel, big fan of both of your content.
honestly I rarely ever comment on RUclips and it's rarely ever anything but trolling but these videos are just really really amazing everything from the narrating to the display and all the little explanations and inside jokes really makes you feel like you are going along for the journey. I really hate emerald for some reason now but I watch all the videos just to give you more views etc I'll try to comment on the videos more but i usually watch them when I'm on the road or something but you really do an incredible job I'd say keep up the good work but that would be undercutting the quality of the work you do really it's keep up the best work
o and dome fossil ftw
Thanks so much. Btw I really disliked Emerald before I started making the videos but it’s really growing on me now!
Jrose11 🤝 Scott's Thoughts
Forgetting Erika
Seeing you run Red instead of Yellow was a really nice change of pace!
You. Are. A. Legend. I love all of your posts. Scott..... keep it up. I watch all your videos
Thanks again Ryan!
I love the classic illustration of Gyarados for Red version!
those trainer artworks are incredible!
Ah man, watching Water Onyx blast through Brock and Misty so quickly reminded me of VanMan's Alakazam vs Gyrados run.
Also, love how the JRose running gag has seeped into other runs as well. :p
This was super fun! I've been considering doing speed runs and stuff.. Seems fun!
It’s very fun!
Thanks for another video, Scott!
Welcome!
Thanks for another vid so fast!!!
Bonus video!!!! How exciting! My guess is a complete destruction of anything in front of Gyarados. I am thinking like a 50 minute time
That was quick! Wow, didn't expect that. You playing Red with Gyrados, I mean. Also it's time. Crazy.
I'm sick in bed with covid atm, thanks for the enterainment!
Get well soon Anni! Felt like time to start playing Red again. I’m always theorizing about how the two games compare, I want to get some real data!
I saw that transition of entering Erika's gym door then appearing in Koga's gym. That was slick.
;)
I appreciate you not ruining Gyaradoses reputation by uploading this playthrough so quickly after the Pokemon Yellow run btw!
I love your channel. My fav Pokémon are skunktank, xatu, and dewgong. If you make a video for any
Of these lmk
Wow that did impressed me bro! Gyarados is such a beast in blue and red. His stats are better in these versions too, all of them. I guess I could say it's as good as Mewtwo, at least in bule and red. It was so fun watching this challenge man! You gotta try out the challenges in yellow in blue and red more times! Thank you!
More Red version content in the near future!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon yes! Doduo and dodrio are better in red Version if I good recall!
First turn recover is the biggest brain move.
Alakazam brain
I’ve revisited this vid so many times even though it’s new
I love the thought of finding Scott in a play through. "Bug catcher Scott wants to fight! He sends out Gyarados!"
Hahahaha
Here for the premier. Great run.
Ah yes, the game where Sabrina has the psychic type Venomoth, not Koga. It all makes sense now!
The world is set right.
Going into erikas gym and ending up in kogas was a slick transition.
;)
Wow! Even MORE Gyarados!
I like how you use more old-school Sugimori style art when you do anything in red/blue
Glad someone noticed it!
3:28 "smash the final lass"
Well that really wasn't that surprising to see Gyarados dominate this game so much
But again a great video showing off why this dragon not dragon is as feared as it should be
It’s crazy how one change makes such a difference between the games.
11:52 To Kangaskhan's credit, there was a leaked backsprite of a Marowak evolution who carried a lil' baby Kangaskhan
"Bubblebeam in replace of water gun" had me tripping for a hot sec.
But Scott just goofed
I would be excited to see some older Runs redone, but have you concidered doing Vulpix vs. Growlithe?
Arcanine VS Ninetales is in the works
7:14 I can't believe you survived a 4x thunderbolt
Yessssssss 🙌🏻 and finally a run where you can enjoy it a little bit more 🤣
Then yellow version fun handicaps 🤣🤣
I'd love to see you do more runs in Red/Blue with Pokemon that will have significant differences
now that was a lot better than Yellow, I have not long watched both JRose and VanMans videos with Gyarados and I knew you'd have an easier time in Red or Blue, but I didn't expect it to be this much better. have you any plans yo use Gyarados in any of the Gen 2 games or Emerald or is the Special split that ruined its special attack too scary?
Maybe FireRed……
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon that would be interesting to see, I know from experience that its physical move pool isn't the great in Fire red and its Special attack is particularly bad, be prepared for a rough run
Bruno does gives away the "No thoughts, heads empty" vibe.
Glad to see you finally figured out what to do with Gyarados. It really did get nerfed hard in Yellow.
What to do with Gyarados: Play Red
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Pretty much.
you're trippin on that Golbat sprite, that thing looks sick imo. imagine running into that thing irl, youd poop yourself. another fun vid
I love how you team up so that you can bring EVEN MORE STATS!!!
We will have all the stats!!!! Accuracy is important too so trying to automate as much as possible to calculate etc
I would love to see you do a true speed run, legit out of the box style, no speed ups, all speed running rules. You’ve gotten good enough I think you could post a really good time.
I'm sure it will happen!
Commenting for the algorithm.
Great video! :)
Scott would you ever do cross gen playthroughs? E.g., Espeon and Umbreon in Yellow
Scott is playing Pokemon Red?! IS THAT ALLOWED?? IS THAT ALLOWED?!?!?
What a fun run, always interesting to see you deviate from the norm.
“Smash the final Lass”- ok Scott.
A red video? This takes me back
I can't find any link to Vanman's run (Alakazam vs. Gyrados) that you recommended.
@@KevChaos86 Thank you mate
I love the RBY XP Router. It's great and you can show much better why something is the best play.
And yeah Gyarados in Red is just op. Maybe the best non-psychic-type and perhaps No 3 over all (1st Mewtwo and 2nd Alakazam?), even better than Mew.
No, not really.
Its just ok, its incredibly weak to common Pokémon
@@sopadumacacoumadelicia5 I mean in a playthrough. So for example Mew is worse because it has a bad starting moveset against Brock. Obv it is the second best in competetive. Also others like Tauros etc. are better.
How is the 40k special coming along? Almost at 50k already :D
It’s like 16k words. Getting editing now. Needs major revisions because so much time has passed.
Also, I love that Haunter sprite so much, I made a perler of it lol
I love these videos 😊
I'm looking forward for more Red/Blue content in the future, to better illustrate how it compares with Yellow. I think only Hypno and Mewtwo might be able to beat Gyarados' time.
10:48 "Oh boy, it's my time to shine, I'll use the best move in the game, LEER!" *misses*
This Growlithe truly is one of the most pathetic boss pokemon EVER
If Gyarados didnt have the flying typing I bet bulbasaur would had whiped u out. hehe. I also love how you can follow it's pokedex as its known to destroy cities with it's rage and just fun how you can just whip out the early trainers none stop. This is why Gyarados is my top favorite pokemon as how cool it is. :D
Pretty poetic in a way that your Gyarados reached the level for Hyper Beam (and learning it) upon beating Lance.
in what way?
@@Ludzig Cause Lance is known for having/spamming Hyper Beam himself on his Gyarados and some to all of his other mons.
Dang, Gyarados absolutely CRUSHED Pokemon Red! One thing I will say is that I iind of wish you used the old art for the gym leader intros as well, it looks a bit weird with the old art clashing with the new. Great job otherwise, your videos are always on point!
The intros will get reworked. We didn’t have much time to remake them for this video. Hoping to spend some good time with them before the next RB video
got a pro tip to help in future challenges to save time
name yourself and the rival just a single character ( example A or . ) and the starter the same
This method has saved me tons of times on my runs also over time could save hours
if naming the starter a single character it will cost a bit of time but long term saves time
I do this when doing my followup playthrough. However I always name myself Scott and my rival Butt. After all, this is content and I gotta have some flavour haha
Picturing Bruno's Machamp when Bruno refuses to delete Focus Energy and makes him Submission Flying types like "Bruh come on"
Lol I know.
I love the fact you forgot Erica just like Jrose11
I know. Such a coincidence that works perfectly in a video where I referenced his work twice.
For some reason when you got to Blaine's gym I was expecting you to say "TOMBSTONER BROTHER"...
Nice gift for the holiday
Red/Blue runs is one way to extend your time with gen 1 on the channel. Hopefully this isn't just a one off to get Gyarados a better spot on the tier-list. Though if that is the goal the only fair approach would be to run Gyarados with it's opening moveset from Red/Blue in Yellow and seeing if/how much that helps it out.
There will be more Red on the channel soon!
Damnnnn, so speedy!
Behind the scenes stuff is getting really tight! Expect faster releases
Scott: "I hope JRose demotes Surge again because he deserves it."
JRose: "We beat Civilian Surge and now he's being demoted to Drifter Surge."
Hei Scott, great video as always. I really liked the fact that you used pokemon red/blue for once. This games are very different from yellow, and this means that also the runs will be different. For me, you should continue to do more runs with these games, but of course they would not cancel the yellow run. It's just an addiction for make more diverse contents
The Golbat sprite in Red and Blue looks like Clippit from MS Word with wings, legs and a massive tongue
Sorry I couldn't make it to the premiere. Still looking forward to this.
