FAQ: Why not mimic Lick against Agatha? Wouldn't that be more consistent than using Crabhammer?
I've replied to a lot of your comments already regarding this. Here is the summary of these replies: when filming the video I ran damage ranges for Lick. Even with full Swords Dance setup it maxes out at 90% chance to OHKO the Gengars because if Krabby gets a crit it doesn't do enough damage. Plus, setting up with Swords Dance increases the damage confusion deals and having to spend 1 turn mimicking, 1-3 turns setting up means the first Gengar is likely to use Mega Drain and Confuse Ray. Both of these scenarios do not feel good. Also, losing a battle after setup feels pretty bad because the setup times valuable time.
Okay, so that brings us to when I'm writing this comment. I've thought about this scenario more. Either way, Agatha is going to be fairly brutal. Here are the different options at lv68 (with my exact amount of stat experience, these numbers are pulled directly from RBY XP Router from the route file I recorded during my second playthrough):
    1) Crabhammer. 60% chance to 2hit Gengar1, 95% chance to 2hit Haunter, 3hit Gengar2.
    2) Mimic Lick, setup once. All ghosts are two hits. This will take either the same number of turns, or 1 more turn than option 1. Because Swords Dance boosts attack, confusion will be more deadly.
    3) Mimic Lick, setup twice. 90% one hit Gengar1, 99% haunter, 90% Gengar2. This only saves 1 turn when compared with the ideal outcome of the Crabhammer strategy. However, because Crabhammer lacks accuracy and guarenteed crits, this strategy might feel better. However, confusion will be even more deadly.
    4) Mimic Lick, setup three times, unchanged from 2 turns of setup due to Krabby's crit rate with Lick. As crits bypass beneficial stat changes it can't exceed a 90% chance to OHKO the Gengars (when at this level).
    5) Ice Beam - this strategy is luck based. Hope for a freeze on the first Gengar. This allows you to setup mimic and setup for free. I think this is the worst way to go, because if you don't get the freeze then you just wasted a turn that could have contributed to your setup.
Of the lick strategies. 2 turns of setup is the best.
I think on review I'd probably use the 2 turn Lick strategy if I did this playthrough again. Originally I wrote it off because I couldn't get the KO chance to 100%. I think I was also slightly biased towards finding a use for Crabhammer when filming this. After all, a move with the name Crabhammer just has way too much style to be ignored. Thanks for commenting about this! You motivated me to dig a bit deeper.

OMG IT'S KRABBY!!!!! Im very excited, I have so much sentimental attachment to this little crab. Krabby, along with Kingler, were my original favorite pokemon and are the reason crabs are my favorite animal. I remember watching an episode of the anime where professor Oak was showing ash's Krabby compared to Gary's Krabby, And I thought that Gary caught the absolute coolest giant crab boi ever. I paused the VHS of the episode for like a hour to draw the Krabby. I also remember loving looking at the art for Krabby and Kingler from the old pokemon TCG sets. The only issue I have with Krabby and Kingler is that they don't have the full 6 legs that real crabs would (they have 4), and i remember the moment I found that out last year when I was playing Pokemon go and was wondering where the set of legs went in the in game model. The missing legs bug me, but I can't hate Krabby for it, they are just such a good crab and I love them

I think to make Koga a little more consistent, potentially having Krabby be poisoned can prevent Sleep Powder and gives more Swords Dance setup. Also, how did you feel about Mimic? I think there’s certain areas like Giovanni with Double Team, and Agatha with Substitute that it would be useful. Ice Beam seemed to not be doing anything in that section.

Krabby is an interesting fella; memorable for it's battle cry (cool in both the game and the anime) and a Water type designed to hit hard... physically... before the attack/special split. Aside from Bubbling Brock's 4x weak Pokémon, I don't think we will see much of the crab's water typing at play here.
0:32 - You also get to see one of the greatest back-sprites in all of Pokémon. His pincers are up in the air because he's having so much fun and his thin horns look like long little eyes.
5:10 - Your luck here has been incredible. So many doomsday scenarios of poison and wrapping but your Crab (missed opportunity to name him Cookie) prevailed. Getting that first physical attack is going to be a glorious moment.
8:31 - I was thinking that grinding against any available Geodude would be a smart play. Anything that gets you closer to learning Vicegrip as soon as possible should help a ton for the Krabby run (a shame it can't learn that Mega Punch TM).
11:52 - Awww, Crab the Krabby is so happy. An hey; Crab also is good at tanking physical hits as well thanks to it's strong Defence and lack of weaknesses to physical types.
14:42 - The funny thing with the edited out battles is how it looks like these trainers challenge you to a battle, you mention that your Krabby has Vicegrip and they just give up without battling you.
20:28 - This Eevee barely hanging on is becoming a bit of a recurring thing at this point. Rather impressive. I'm surprised that Lavender Tower didn't cause more issues for you given you had to rely on Special moves for the entire ascent.
24:41 - The leader of Kanto's largest criminal organisation and the 8th gym leader, folks.
30:06 - I can't believe you managed to hit with that either. After two accuracy drops, I was certain this was going to be another reset. I was expecting the strategy to win would require a single Swords Dance to be performed to 1-hit Alakazam but luck was on your side.
38:54 - I've been curious about this, not so much in a Surf vs Crabhammer scenario but why you have a special move at all (or at least one which doesn't have a secondary status effect like Ice Beam). I like Crabhammer conceptually but Krabby's low Special made me think it would be useless here. I see the reasoning is Crabhammer's increased crit chance... combined with a lower accuracy, you were really gambling with this move.
45:35 - Crab succeeds even whilst poisoned; congrats to the crab champion!
48:19 - I suppose the best change to make is to try and memorise any opponents that use those 4x weak Rock/Ground Pokémon. Due to them all having low Special stats, they provide a quick EXP gain for Krabby.
50:47 - Fantastic to see the strategy for Sabrina is exactly the same as I thought it would be. Also, maybe casting two Reflects is a trend spreading around the Kanto region.

  • @cduke_Net_Architect
    @cduke_Net_Architect Год назад

Karbby's unique stats were really making that run very challenging for it, almost as if gen 4's physical special split were really needed to make it shine. 😅But hey, at least crab hammer was really useful. 😊
The mid game and especially with Agatha, made me realise karbby belongs into the bad special stat club , along with Hitmonchan, Ryhdon, and most of the rock types in this gen. But regardless rng was really on your side with that early freeze, without it I think that the optimised run would have had almost the same results(and then you would probably have done a third playthrough, to make sure it would get the best results.) 😊
Karrby is really proud of you, for giving it the best results it could have. Keep it up! 👏👏👏

Mimic to steal hypnosis and putting the ghosts to sleep, then get to 9 badge boosts which gives you 3 times your special, and "sweep" with surf. I thought this was an amazing strategy but even with that I only got like 2HKOs on the Gengar I think. Your approach with Crabhammer seems to yield similar results. Always fascinating stuff !

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Does that include Mimicking Substitute? Surely that would make setup much safer, especially if several badge boosts would let your Sub survive a Mega Drain.
After that, replace Harden with Strength and Mimic with Rest to sweep through the last two battles.
For earlier routing, Body Slam and Crab Hammer should seem sufficient for the earlier parts of the game. Ice Beam, if anything, only seems useful to freeze the Gastly in Pokémon Tower. After that, replace it with Crab Hammer.
Some concession seem like they have to be made, specifically against Koga.

Firstly, I'd have made it a Water/Bug, as I feel like anything with an exoskeleton should qualify and it would have been a unique combination at the time which would have helped Krabby/Kingler stand out more. Secondly, because Vice Grip is a shared only by Krabby/Kingler and Pinser, I would have made that move Bug-type as well, giving both Pokémon a physical STAB option.

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Maybe you could do a Kingler vs. Cloyster video? A super high attack vs a super high defense with bad special in a 2 stage water type pokemon (just ommit their evolutions methods and it is alright)

You'll somehow have to make the Tierlist be able to hold more pokemon :P. Right now it can fit about 90 pokemon (filling all S to F tiers to the top)
    Nice video as always ♥

With love, Krabby got SO lucky this playthrough (your strategy for multiple gyms was "hope they don't attack me lol") that I think that that high placement flatters it a good amount

Big fan of the series here Scott! I would love to see some data analysis on how each Pokemon's time stacks up versus its base stat total (BST). Almost so that you have another determining factor in ranking similarly-placed finishers - e.g. Krabby has a lower BST than Tentacool so deserves its higher ranking. You've got enough data points here that you may even be able to map out a model that predicts run time as a function of BST, although there are obviously other variables such as the Pokemon's type, access to coverage moves for Brock, etc that would need to be factored in to improve accuracy. I'd be happy to give this a go myself, but would need split times for each final run to be able to figure out where each Pokemon struggles, which would suggest a variable in the function. Obviously this is your channel and your series, so tell me to get lost if you want, but as a data-driven Pokemon nerd I think it would add an interesting insight into how each Pokemon performs versus your expectation/prior knowledge of the Pokemon.

I think growth rate needs to be factored in. Maybe available moves too? Email me if you want to work on it.

At 14:20 when you mention how brutal accuracy drops are in gen 1, I completely agree but somehow this still hasn't changed, even in generation 9 accuracy dropping by 1 stage still has the exact same insane decrease in accuracy

I didn't really use the krabby line during gen 1, but for a long time I would always catch a pokemon with the good rod once I got to Olivine city in gen 2. If I had caught a mareep earlier on then I would almost always catch and use a krabby. If I didn't catch a mareep I would often catch a chinchou. Later on I discovered the remoraid in the lake past Mahogany town and I would often use that instead due to its interesting moveset that I thought was really cool. I haven't used the krabby line much since then, but I always thought it was cool. I should use it again some time.
