I fell in love with Substitute, and spammed all kind of X-items with Mr. Mime (the trusty Marcel from trading Abra) when I was a kid - then proceeded to faceroll with Double Slap. Gosh I used to loved that move even though it is absolute dog water. But as I was always going for max amount of X-accuracy as well, I never realized that the move has 85% accuracy. If only I would have realized that it isn't necessary to use every kind of X-item (including Guard Spec.) in EVERY battle - yes, on random route trainers too 😆 Thank you for the amazing content man!
Blooper with Giovanni! It sounds like you were thinking of Rhydon when you were talking about Dugtrio's level. Rhydon's the one that goes from 50 to 55 between the gen 1 games, while Dugtrio goes from 42 to 50.
The Sandslash brick wall is the main thing that makes Pikachu hard to do in Yellow (once you get past Brock) so having something for that ought to make its time way better.
It's NOT a regular pikachu. Trade it to gen 2 and it'll hold a Light Ball, unlike any other pikachu. It's special, and it has an extra bit to signify this
You really should've ended this video with footage of you playing the surfing game south of Fuchsia. We all know that's the REAL reason you'd want Surf on Pikachu.

Your animation figures all spectacular I really l really love them Scott! Pikachu surfing also was so so cute!! Thank you for bringing us so much fun! I always enjoy your challenges so much, thank you!
I was exploring some of the things you can do with the ws m glitch a few years ago, one of the things I did was put surf onto pikachu and that's when I saw the sprite for the first time, it got a big smile out of me. I started replaying DQ3 recently, and something I always appreciate about it is that when you press up on the wrong tile next to an entrance, the game actually moves you towards the entrance as if you had pressed left/right, and then you keep moving up. Every time I see it I just remember these videos and wonder how much time it would shave off runs if the game autocorrected you on walls next to ramps/doors...
This is awesome. The unique surfing animation is so cute. Too bad that having Surf only helps it out so much. The fact it can also get Fly and Petal Dance is interesting. Really supports the message from early days of Pokemon that they could theoretically do just about anything they want to with enough motivation and determination.
I played Yellow more than the copy I had--Red--and I only got Surfing Pikachu once. I didn't own an N64, so getting it meant playing Stadium at my friend's place. However, I remember my first playthrough after seeing one of the few episodes of the Anime I saw as a kid, and expected we could take out Onix with Pikachu....only to be annoyed that it was the same as Pokemon Red
First rom of pokemon yellow in like 1999 always had the bug that every first move slot of your first pokemon would get surf. it was really weird and misty was a pain pre lvl 26 (thunderbolt). although you would get to play a minigame at the surfing house so i had that
Pikachu with surf? Finally. Though that Pikachu is sort of special though, trade it to gen 2 and get the light ball! Light ball run with Pikachu and surf in gen 2 for the future?
This video and what you said at the end of the first run about having to resort to Double Team in order to boost its power gave me an idea. What if Pikachu were 'holding' the Light Ball? Now I know what you might say, that Pokemon can't hold items! Well, the Pikachu from Pokemon Yellow does actually have the Light Ball, because when you transfer it over to Gen II games, it is holding the Light Ball. It just doesn't know how to in Gen I, that's all. For the unaware, the Light Ball is an item that doubles Pikachu's raw Special Attack stat, and in Gen 4 and beyond, it also boosts the Attack stat. What this means is that that crappy base 50 special rivals Mewtwo's in terms of power, and in gen 4+, Pikachu's attack is almost as strong as Rampardos' before any sort of setup. So I was thinking, in order to replicate this effect in Gen I, would it be possible to give yourself a special Pikachu with a modified base special stat of around ~150, which is how strong base 50 special becomes after the raw special attack stat afterward is doubled by light orb? Up to you if you would want to also use the Gen II or Gen IV effect as well, where in which case, the base attack stat gets boosted to ~160 or so. You can think of it like Pikachu suddenly learned to hold the Light Ball that it normally carries into Gen II in Gen I.
@@TJF588 That's a good point. Also, something I didn't consider about this idea is that Light Ball realistically only increases offenses, but increasing special in Gen I is defensive as well. There's no real way to get around that, but oh well. At the same time, there's also stuff like increasing Marowak's attack to replicate Thick Club (I think the base attack stat equivalent is actually over the cap of 255), or increasing Chansey and Farfetch'd's speed to replicate Lucky Punch and Stick, respectively. That idea's a bit of a stretch, though, because base speed boosting crit rate is exclusively a gen I thing, and boosting speed has obvious consequences aside from crit rate.
@@UtubeWatchu May as well just leave the stat increases as they are. None of these are "legitimate" distributions, so let's just see how hard it breaks Gen1's quirks.
since this is a very "cute eletric rat is bad even when it can surf" video does the item light ball fix pikachu in gen 2? I think it can get a pretty good time because it will speedrun the game until Red and get stuck there for some time
If you trade that Pikachu to gen 2 it gets a light ball also it has special animations in stadium 1 and 2 on the n64 also light ball Pikachu is pure terror honestly if the anime or manga any Pikachu is special its just really bad in gen 1
Thanks for the vid! I love Heracross! As for back ports, it would be nice to have Ursaluna vs Great Tusk to continue your Teddiursa vs Phanpy, another idea is Gastrodon in Emerald because IIRC Gastrodon was actually supposed to be released in Gen 3
The fact that they only had one or two colors to work with in the gen one battle sprites always leads me to thinking that the cheek part on pikachu's back sprite is just a really derpy eye.
Do I spy a Pikachu redemption arc? 👀 I just know this one will be good. Hope you're feeling better and the covid is gone tho! Sending good vibes if not 👌
Glad to see you're doing better Scott. I love yellow specifically for giving u a pikachu to start and lets it walk around you and then gives u the rest of the starters later.
I can understand Yellow Version Pikachu not starting off with Surf, but it should have been teachable to it once you get the HM. That surfing mini-game and opening was a real tease about it. Really cool to see how giving a Pikachu a surfboard effects things outside of just making Brock super easy. 2:51 - It's higher attack made Quick Attack pretty decent early on and Body Slam a good choice later on; just a shame it's only Fighting move options are Submission and Seismic Toss back then. Pikachu's low defence is what makes the Pokémon truly tricky to use. 3:51 - An as mentioned, when dealing with Rock Types at least, it can have Submission. Admittedly, that type advantage is off-set by all the early gen Rock types having such good defence. Interesting to learn there was a Petal Dancing Pikachu; what an odd choice of event Pikachu to make. 7:41 - Lovely seeing the animated expressions on the chosen Pokémon again. I only just noticed when Pikachu got annoyed at losing. 13:59 - Hooray; Surge did a Surge and effectively handed you the victory despite how everything was in his favour. You do love consistency and Surge does prove to be consistently terrible. 18:25 - Your accidental pick-up of the Surf HM was hilarious. Also hilarious was 24:55's two super "lucky" critical hits! 25:27 - I had heard of it, but never seen it before. The way Surfing Pikachu teeters from side-to-side with it's front facing animation is do derpy; so adorable! 29:55 - Yeah, it's slightly high special defence is a quirky little thing that is nice to have. It's a shame that it didn't have access to any special moves to take advantage of that before the physical/special split... well aside, from the odd dark move in Gen 2 and 3. 33:12 - I knew Double Team was good, even as a kid, but kid me also didn't like my Pokémon copying each other and wouldn't usually have the same moves across the same Pokémon. Even if it would be beneficial, two Pokémon on the team wouldn't have Sleep Powder for instance... but two different sleep inducing techniques like Sing was a-ok. Kid thoughts, eh. 42:05 - For a second, I thought you were going to give him his other two event moves of Sing and Petal Dance as compensation... though admittedly, they aren't a great replacement for the amazingness of Double Team. I ran Light Screen on my Pikachu (not a solo challenge) and with your Calcium boosting, that might be a good replacement. 43:13 - Huh, didn't expect the Lass with the Jigglypuff to get an artwork. I don't think they've been pointed out in your runs often enough for such an honour. 49:01 - That was such a flukey but awesome moment! Given it's low defence, it feels like cause for celebration whenever Pikachu survives any attack.
Srufing pikachu is a big improvement then regular pikachu. By the way, Srufing pikachu could learn fly as well, but I don't think that could change its time all that much. Adding some additional trainers has helped pikachu overcome the sandslash and some onter major obstacles. 😊 But, I did really knew about that event pikachu with patal dance that's weird, to even imagine how it does that. 🤔Maybe you could try an only event moves pikachu run with fly, surf, and patal dance at some point. But still that low defence was really showing how bad pikachu could be, with its only weakness to ground moves. 🤔 The optimized run was really amazing, on how you've managed to know which trainers to include in your grind. That's some excellent understanding of how the stat experience system. Well done! 👏👏👏
I actually never used anything other than my starter until Gen IV. The only exception was the second time I played Yellow I used a Pidgey the entire time (it was Pidgeot by the end), but I did have the surfing Pikachu from Stadium. I spent so many hours playing the surfing mini game in the house on the beach in Fuchsia.
To get Pikachu to learn surf through stadium, you both have to have it amongst the 6 Pokemon you choose for for R2 Prime Cup *and* choose it for one of the three Pokemon used in each battle (at least if I remember right, it could be I read a gamefaqs wrong as a kid and made the challenge unnecessarily difficult). This made every match feel like a 2v3 considering how weak Pikachu is without surf on top of the ridiculous hax that occur during that cup, but boy was it worth it to eventually see Pikachu "RIDE THAT SURF" in beautiful N64 3-D animation.
Yeah, Pokemon Yellow (and also Gen 2 versions due to probable not removing placeholder stuff from Yellow... glad they didn't remove it) features a Surfing Pikachu sprite while surfing with Pikachu, also Surf really helps Pikachu in gen 1.
A request for the future if you're willing can you do a run with a modified Metapod and Kakuna duo with custom movesets? Bugs dwell in the earth burrowing underground regularly so Dig should definitely be part of their movesets. Also Spore+Dream Eater combo for the sake of covering the need for a sleep and recovery tactic without having these already fragile mons vulnerable as would be the case with using Rest, Tackle, Bite, Leer, String Shot, Harden, Defense Curl, Mimic, Leech Life, Mega Drain, Wrap, Bind, Constrict, Bide, Toxic, Confusion, Psybeam, Psywave, Psychic, Swift, Acid, Supersonic, Confuse Ray, Poison Sting, Twin Needle, Pin Missile. You can use hacked in rare candies as necessary once you have used the ones you usually pick up in the game.
Scott I love that you chose yellow over red and blue to make gen 1 videos. I think it really helps make you stand out from other poketubers. Keep up the great work, but remember to take care of your health!
Hi Scott. I've been checking out your channel for last month would love to see Dragonite solo run or a VS video. Thanks for all great content and keep up the good work!
Watching for the second time, even better than the first time! I was sure Pikachu even with surf would face some potential problems with grass types and with the types resistant to the electric type as well as to the strong special attackers! It was difficult but I guess body Slam could make up for it. By the way Scott, how was it the method to get a surfing Pikachu? I don't quite remember... You must beat Pokemon stadium prime cup master ball with a Pikachu in your party? Is that it? Thanks for the video once again, man! The best of luck!

Good luck Scott and Pikachu!
surfing pikachu is awesome, one of my earliest and fondest memories of pokemon. loved this video
If only I would have realized that it isn't necessary to use every kind of X-item (including Guard Spec.) in EVERY battle - yes, on random route trainers too 😆
Thank you for the amazing content man!
Blooper with Giovanni! It sounds like you were thinking of Rhydon when you were talking about Dugtrio's level. Rhydon's the one that goes from 50 to 55 between the gen 1 games, while Dugtrio goes from 42 to 50.
Plus fighting Koga, you say generation 2 when talking about crit scaling, when I believe you mean generation 1?
Wow that surfing Pikachu animation was dope!! Seriously never even considered that bring a thing!
I never thought I would hear the word "Hypno Sandwich", like, ever in my life. Lol
I like how you changed Pikachu's expressions on the picture during the playthrough ^^
Pikachu surfs. Pikachu dances. Makes sense, sure.
Shut up
Was just thinking surfing Pikachu would be a sick run yesterday. Hype!
I had a rough day but Hypno sandwich stole my smile :D :D
I can’t wait to see the sequel to this with Surfing Raichu!
I like me a good hypnosandwich! Nicely done as always, thanks for entertaining me on a weekend : )
This was a fun run to watch! Great job Scott! Love the nickname, i remember my friends and i thought marill would be named pikablu when Johto was being introduced 😂
I was also convinced Marill would be Pikablu!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon fire name, shoulda went with it
I remember there were supposed to be GameShark codes to make it appear but I never bothered trying it.
Scott, still grass types are a tough challenge for Pikachu to beat, even though it knows surf, but of course it was a nice try!
YES! YOU'RE DOING IT!!!!
I don't know if Psyduck reward from stadium will get this treatment but im excited.
you should hack future games to replace squirtle or lapris or something with pikachu so that you can always pikachu surf in yellow.
Omg that would be fun!
Man I’m so happy you did this one!! You should do one video with the pikachu that knows surf, petal dance and fly just for fun! Lol
First rom of pokemon yellow in like 1999 always had the bug that every first move slot of your first pokemon would get surf. it was really weird and misty was a pain pre lvl 26 (thunderbolt). although you would get to play a minigame at the surfing house so i had that
I don't know if this is a thing, but I've kept quick attack I'm my movement incase of sleep status. It seems to help wake up faster.
@ScottsThoughts353 not sure what that is
Pikachu with surf? Finally.
Though that Pikachu is sort of special though, trade it to gen 2 and get the light ball!
Light ball run with Pikachu and surf in gen 2 for the future?
Sure! That sounds fun! I’ll make it a 2023 project
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon and to top it all off, make sure to give it HP fire/ice.
Pokemon stadium when you beat the prime cup in round 2. Your Pikachu if it is in your team can learn it
Curious on why you wouldn't allow pikachu to have fly for this playthrough, would've helped against erika and koga.
EDIT: And champions Exeggutor
I'd think it should be the Gen 2 effect, given those Gens hadn't been able to transfer outside themselves until the Virtual Console releases.
Nicknaming your Pikachu Pikablu was such a neuron awakening to me.
I almost forgot all about "Pikablu".
since this is a very "cute eletric rat is bad even when it can surf" video does the item light ball fix pikachu in gen 2? I think it can get a pretty good time because it will speedrun the game until Red and get stuck there for some time
If you trade that Pikachu to gen 2 it gets a light ball also it has special animations in stadium 1 and 2 on the n64 also light ball Pikachu is pure terror honestly if the anime or manga any Pikachu is special its just really bad in gen 1
Pokemon gods were shining on you at the end for not using Evasion Tactics lol
I'm curious. If you use surf as Raichu, what sprite does he use?
Should the Sand-Attack Pidgey trainer get artwork too, perhaps?
A “Hypno Sandwich”
I wasn’t ready 😂😂😂
Edit: Holy s***!!! I’ve never seen the surfing Pikachu sprite! That’s amazing!
Hey Scott, I like the content. One tweak on pikachu. Surf is OP. Wait to teach until you find it in the safari zone
lol Hypno sandwich lol Your best joke ever. Glad you recorded it loll
Surfing Pikachu? Let's get it, let's go!
Thank you so much for this video! Will you do a raichu run too with surf? Pleaseeeee
Interesting that Pikachu can learn petal dance via event
Also discovered that psyduck can learn that move aswell
Srufing pikachu is a big improvement then regular pikachu. By the way, Srufing pikachu could learn fly as well, but I don't think that could change its time all that much.
Adding some additional trainers has helped pikachu overcome the sandslash and some onter major obstacles. 😊
But, I did really knew about that event pikachu with patal dance that's weird, to even imagine how it does that. 🤔Maybe you could try an only event moves pikachu run with fly, surf, and patal dance at some point. But still that low defence was really showing how bad pikachu could be, with its only weakness to ground moves. 🤔
The optimized run was really amazing, on how you've managed to know which trainers to include in your grind. That's some excellent understanding of how the stat experience system. Well done! 👏👏👏
Fly gives it an out to Grass types that otherwise resist Electric and Water coverage. The 2 turn nature of the move sucks though.
@@ShiningJudgment666 yeah, and the fact that pikachu can't handle being hit by an attack. 🤔
Oh my god nostalgia!
Loved this video :)
Can we get a bonus episode of you playing the mini game in fushia?
Yeah, Pokemon Yellow (and also Gen 2 versions due to probable not removing placeholder stuff from Yellow... glad they didn't remove it) features a Surfing Pikachu sprite while surfing with Pikachu, also Surf really helps Pikachu in gen 1.
The surfing pikachu graphic is ADORABLE OMG
It really is
Thank you so much for not making this a premiere
why does it matter though?
Great video, great drawings!
Surfing Pikachu sprite is lovely 💛
Amazing that Pikachu has a unique surfing animation! Does this mean that event Pikachu that also know Fly have a similarly unique animation?
Pikachu is a mouse I feel like it should learn Dig.

@19:20 you give him a carbo and its speed increases but also its def stat got +2. Maybe due statexp? does it treat vitamins as a lvl up?
It recalculates all stats. So yeah, stat exp had accumulated and the vitamin recalculated the defense too.
would actually be funny if that would matter as mechanic in one playthrough@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon
