    Classy Cat v Pig Monkey!

    The "Rhydon of gen three"
    A Pure Power powerhouse

I think the reason Suicune gets BubbleBeam at L.11 is because it's the box art Pokemon. In Gold and Silver it had Water Gun at L.11. I think they gave it a better learnset for Crystal because it's part of the story and they wanted it to be stronger when you fight it, rather than to make up for its lower offensive stats (although interestingly in future generations its level-up moves are based on the Crystal learnset, they didn't revert back to the Gold/Silver one to put it back equal with Raikou and Entei).

I think this really demonstrates the idea of overkill in these. 90 base special attack is still absolutely usable, and having higher defenses + being a water type I think is worth more.

What a great way to cap off crystal playthroughs for the year.
Scott has really taught me how to enjoy crystal playthroughs, it really has a different set of challenges compared to gen1 and is a pretty cool journey at least with scotts editing and storytelling. Im sure the progression, rocket plotline, and Kanto section are pretty boring for scott but he makes the playthrough fun for us.

Just for reference, (conversational Japanese speaker here who lived and worked in Japan, but native english speaker who enjoys studying languages) Raikou is meant to be pronounced Rah-ee-kō-ü with the first two and last two syllables frequently slurred together. Japanese frequently shortens or omits vowel sounds that aren't easily spoken quickly when the syllable combination is awkward. So it becomes Rai (like Tie) and Kou (like Whoa) where the "Oh" sound rounding into more of a shortened oo like root (as in 'rooting for').
All three Beasts use the same name across most languages although the official pronunciations in English seem to change depending who the director of the project was (Raikou has been pronounced both how you have done in this video, and how its pronounced in Japanese in English Pokémon media so you'd be correct either way, but your inferred pronunciation you had growing up would be incorrect. Other examples of inconsistent pronunciation in English Pokémon media include Rayquaza as Ray-Kwah-zah and Ray-Kway-zah and Arceus as Ahr-SEE-us and Ahr-KEE-us. In Japanese, Arceus uses the first pronunciation and Rayquaza is called Raykuuza).

If you're curious about pronunciation, the names of these three Pokemon is just the Japanese names transliterated (except for Suicune, which should have just been Suikun). Raikou is therefore pronounced like the words "rye" and "coal" together, without the "l" at the end. Other than Scott saying the "sui" of "Suicune" a little too fast, he pronounces the other two correctly.

Scott, First of all, thanks for these! You put in a lot of work.
I think Suicune's performance illustrates a point you've made before--gen 2 doesn't need massive attack output, it needs staying power and move diversity. High atk and spa are overkill, as you pointed out with the baby mons. Suicune's coverage and defensive staying power gave it an edge at several important points

This trio was a fun and surprising rivalry to see unfold! With regards to Suicune, I'm surprised that you didn't make use of Hidden Power in the final solo. Aurora Beam does fill a similar role to HP Ice and Bayleef isn't that scary, so I get why Ice isn't that good, but maybe Electric would be good? It would help against Chuck's Poliwrath and even Pryce's Water types (not that they're very threatening anyway). These were very well played and it was a fitting end to the Crystal series this year!

I think it should be banned. It basically fixes all Pokemon at the end. Second is the rival, Pokemon that have weakness to grass have a disadvantage which gives a massive advantage to Pokemon that do not have a weakness to any of their Pokemon - say a normal pokemon or a psychic.

So funny thing, around 57:00 you were talking about how electric+ice gives amazing coverage. This is actually a very common thing in older gen pokemon that stuck around for a long time, being known as quite good/important in a competitive pokemon. That thing is called BoltBeam (Thunderbolt and Ice Beam) because of the exact reasons you described. I think it was still a prominent part of competitive lingo until generation 5 where it started to die off.

    • @lenlimbo
      @lenlimbo 5 месяцев назад

IT's still a very good combination, because it can hit ANYTHING for at least neutral damage, if not super effective and ice is one of the best offensive types. It's just that there are other viable combinations that hit for either neutral or super against everything, so it's not the be all end all of move combinations.

It's just the way in Japanese to pronounce a long o. Most of the time when there's an ou at the end, it will be romanized to Raikō or Raikoh (like they did with Ho-oh) but the person who put it in the game just took the literal reading of the characters "Ra I Ko U." Which like...that definitely was never gonna confuse a bunch of North American players or anything, right?

    • @Duothimir
      @Duothimir 5 месяцев назад

Literally "thunder light", AKA lightning. It could also be a pun on the Japanese reading of Leigong, a Chinese thunder god.

    • @Tenryuu19

@@Duothimir I think it comes from Rai (thunder) and kō (lord), but then again, only the designers truly know.

It's also worth noting that that Japanese pronunciation varies very, very little -- basically if you see those characters, it will (almost -- there might be some exception I don't yet know) always pronounce the same.

But i was happy with it, Jolteon, Typhlosion, and the red Gyarados. But yea since that day i have always liked the legendary beasts especially Raikou!

Entei really should've gotten Earthquake and Rock Slide - he's essentially synonymous with eruptions, and what do eruptions often bring with them? Earthquakes and rock slides.
Such missed potential, even to this day...sure, he did get Extreme Speed and Flare Blitz via Gen 4 movie event, and Sacred Fire (!!!) from Gen 6 move reminder, but that doesn't really increase his coverage, unfortunately.

Before I watch, I will make a few predictions:
Raikou has good speed and special attack, but the lack of coverage could potentially cause issues.
Entei's high attack will definitely be a very good boon, and with decent speed it should be okay. However, if it doesn't get a KO, it's lower defense is going to be problematic if the enemy gets an attack.
Suicune's middling attacking stats may seem bad, but I think it might be okay, it's special attack is good enough that it should be able to 1-3 shot most things, and its bulk means it won't go down as easily as the others, possibly turning what would be a 2 shot on the others into a 3 shot, which could be vital. Plus it has more special coverage than Raikou. I feel it might end up being the second best.
    Having seen it now...
Yeah, went just about exactly I thought.

Your story about Raikou reminds me of my own situation with suicuine, I caught the other 2 (one of them using my masterball, so that was not an option). Fought suicuine a ton, getting it to 1hp with false swipe then relying on sleep, but it would always wake up and run. Eventually it stopped falling asleep (sleep moves just failed, could have been bad luck but it was beyond statistical probability), eventually I switched to paralysis, which would always remain but give me less turns to attempt a catch. Never did manage to catch it.

The Japanese pronunciation for it would be a mix of the two options! Rai to rhyme with "eye" and Kou to rhyme with "throw", but I think pronouncing it how the Pokédex says it in the anime is a good way to figure out what to do about it in English.
As for "Suicune", I dare anyone to try lying that they knew how to pronounce that when they were 10!!

This was a stunner! All 3 did quite well, but I was expecting Raikou~=Suicune>Entei. I know it reduces the HP DV to 8, but is HP Ground worth considering on Suicune for Red's Pikachu? A Return/HP Ground/Rest/Curse set seems like it would be quite consistent.

Entei only really needed HP for the Lance battle, so Ice is usually better than Rock for that with the added benefit of ensuring Clair's Dragonair aren't an issue. You also get the Ice boost from Pryce. Ice is 15A/13D (15 HP) and Rock is 13A/12D (11 HP), so slight advantage there too.

I learned from this that these mons can learn Dig. I never knew. I know Dig is not as ridiculous as in Gen1, but still, that's crazy.
Also, story time: Back in Crystal, in the save I completed the pokedex on for the very first time, I accidentally KOd Entei. I did not realize at the time that you needed all three dogs from YOUR game to unlock Ho-Oh, so come wanting to catch it, I had to realize it was gone forever. So yeah, ironically enough, I had to get Ho-Oh from another game even though Gen2 was the one time the box legends weren't exclusives.
