    A Pure Power powerhouse
    Wattson's ace in Hoenn
    'Phan v Ursaring!
    A tiny turtle's bubble
    The fire starter digging
    A garden lizard's leech seed
    And those three weirdo mons punching

    scott this was an unreal run. for that poochyena with 5 resets don’t even bother training to 18, you had the rock tomb tm from roxanne and that can deal damage. you can teach it over bide and just delete it for HP. hope to see some reattempts on stream!

      In general I felt he massively underestimated the physical potential of Medicham. Him using confusion against the makuhita on Brawley was also painful to watch :p. Medicham has the highest possible attack stat bar none (well, Marowak with Thick Club I guess) and enough speed. Fighting+Ghost coverage is absolutely perfect and with Bulk Up and Recover/Rest/Substitute the end game becomes trivial.

    The run was really good but I think you can get through even faster with a few adjustments. You can learn rock tomb for Poochyena and replace it later. You should stop using special moves as soon as you have hidden power, resisted hidden power does more than neutral confusion. For Wattson as soon as you out speed Manectric you can bulk up twice on Voltorb and sweep with hidden power, the only loss there is if it paralyses you with spark twice in a row and this cuts a lot of optional trainers. I think you over set up for Glacia but that only saves a second or two. And rest plus chesto berry should make Steven easy as you mentioned at the end. If you route to out speed Stevens whole team at the end you can use rare candies earlier to cut resets because the only way he beats you is a crit from Skarmory while you set up your sweep.

    You haven't been performing badly, Scott, even across generations. I've been around since the first 3k subscribers and even then you weren't bad. I have seen you go from a good player, to an amazing one.
    I think the people who are complaining about your plays in different generations aren't considering everything that goes into each playthrough and that's before you consider the additions and different opponents for each gen, item location differences you need to remember, scripting, editing, uploading and probably more. I don't stream but I do solo gen 4 and 5 runs, inspired by you and Jrose. Keep recording that data, learning as you go and you'll keep getting better. Edit: added something I remembered about playing solo challenge runs/nuzlockes over different generations.

    One optimization is Substitute.
    It would greatly simplify the Drake speed bump as you would not have to worry about Intimidate or Rock Tomb Speed drops. It would also allow easier setup on Skarmory without Rest.
    Speaking of which, I would’ve also taught Bulk Up right away since it would make Drake even easier and likely save setup turns.

    I really think they should have made Pure Power effect Special Attack, because as it is, it's just like Huge Power. It certainly would fit Medicham better given its access to all those special attack moves

    • @thecriticalghost4626
      @thecriticalghost4626 5 месяцев назад +9

      psychical attackers have a lot of nerfs like intimidate, the burn status reducing psychical attack (with both moves like will o wisp and abilities like flame body) or confusion self inflicted damage being calculated by the user psychical attack
      Making an ability like that for special attackers would be way better

    • @greyscaleadaven
      @greyscaleadaven 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@thecriticalghost4626Tbf they could have also made it a lower multiplier to balance that out (1.4x is probably okay, we don’t want it to hit 2.25x range like with gorilla tactics/choice band but for a pokémon with this low of base stats it still gives a significant enough boost). It is true though about attack being more countered throughout pokemon history, it’s why choice band was the only of the three choice items to be in gen 3. Now, we have abilities that double defenses like Ice Scales or Fur Coat, and those are also in response to HP being higher priority for tanks then individual defenses generally.

      @@thecriticalghost4626I feel like gen 3 is significantly better for physical attackers than special
      1. Physical attackers have MUCH BETTER setup moves
      2. Double edge return earthquake brick break iron tail headbutt n shadow ball COVER everything n actually have better base POWER than special moves
      The special moves that ARE BETTER are horribly inaccurate like iron tail has better accuracy than thunder or blizzard
      3. Physical moves often have better secondary effects or proc 30 percent of the time like headbutt, or iron tail
      4. When a special Pokémon gets walled ITS ALMOST ALWAYS grind time, physical attackers CAN BE but usually a moveset change will be BETTER like zangoose or blaziken for example, I CHANGED the moveset around while special types your moveset either works n you are LIKELY to stick it out with 4 moves 2 to 3 have stab n another had coverage n maybe rest or sitrus berry

    Just a question Scott, at what point do you feel like you’ll be in a position to start including or doing second playthroughs with Emerald? Your familiarity and knowledge of the game is improved drastically over the past year and at some point you have to think that doing 2nd playthroughs while the Pokémon is still fresh in your mind after a first playthrough will be more beneficial than improving your play and trying later down the road? Just curious your thoughts on this balance.

    A full month of projects this size every day. You're truly a mad lad Scott. Absolutely peak performance RUclipsr. I wish my personality was more like yours in terms of just being a man of action. My best friend is pretty similar in regards to that. I just have never been able to get myself to do that. The only way I'm able to intrinsically motivate myself is when I'm doing hard work to avoid something unpleasant, or because I really want something and the hard work is in my way. Which I guess is more extrinsic too. I just don't have that intrinsic drive and I respect it so much, and sadly the result I want to achieve with my personal projects is just never enough to get me to see any of them through to the end. I need some external force applying to me, and I really need to find a way to get one on me so I can step up like you have.

    The huge power ability doesn't outright double the atk stat.
    It only interacts with moves used by the pokemon as if it had double the attack.
    So for example if an opponent used foul play, it would take the base atk into play, and not the doubled atk.
    But if you used foul play with a pokemon with huge power, your pokemon will read the opponents atk, then apply the huge power boost to it.

    It's funny, because Medicham was a Pokemon that I slept on in its debuted, the concept is cool, but I just didn't care much for the design, and somehow it just didn't occur to me how monstrous of an ability Pure Power is. Fortunately, I eventually rectified this mistake in Gen-4 where the physical special split was very kind to it.
    Speaking of gen-4, I'll be interested to see how Scott handles it. The games keep getting longer and harder from here. I've only ever done one solo playthrough of Platinum, and when I did, I also cheated in a lucky egg to cut down on grinding. Even with the boosted EXP, there were still a few key fights where I found myself struggling.

      I hope he does a few test playthroughs in Platinum and maybe goes over some peculiarities of the game in advance, including the effect of the physical/special change, TM availability, determining if the 'partner' sections are useful for grinding, and what gym leaders to specially watch out for.
      tbh, Sinnoh has a few of the most dangerous trainers in all of Pokemon, not just Cynthia. even Roark isn't free because Cranidos hits like a speeding 18-wheeler running into a baby carriage. well, Candice usually isn't that good, but Pokemon with unfavorable type matchups could still struggle. Gardenia's Roserade, Maylene's Lucario, Wake's whole team, Fantina's Mismagius. okay Byron is usually free for anything that can hit Steel types. and then Volkner can be deceptively dangerous. I had a few fights against him spin out of control.
      the real issue, where I've seen people hit a wall, is the last Cyrus fight. in the Elite Four, the first three aren't that bad, but Lucian's quite dangerous, and then...we all know about Cynthia. I guess the Spiritomb does give set-up opportunities, tho.

    Really cool one! Medic ham is a favorite of mine because when I was first getting into Pokémon as an adult, it was one of the first Pokémon I was totally wrong about when I looked at it's base stats because I didn't understand it's ability, so it's been special to me since. I'm curious to see if it'll be better to use its monstrous special coverage or equally monstrous physical attack though I suspect that with access to bulk up and recover for hard trainers, it's likely to be better to take fast one hits on easy trainers with physical moves.

    I totally agree with you about the legendary Pokemon. That's half of why I don't like the newer generations, especially gen 8. They pretty much force you to catch 2 back to back in that one, and it takes away from the exploration. I like how gen 3 did it the best. Yes, they are important to the story, but you still have to find them after the cutscene. They don't force you to fight one or more of them in that moment. And I love it. You get a hint of what they're capable of then have to go find them. To me, it makes finding and catching them more rewarding than just coming across them in the main story. Especially the first time you find one.

  • @michaelmills8205
    @michaelmills8205 5 месяцев назад

    Watson is definitely one of the strongest gym leaders in any gen 3 run, but the Twins in Emerald can be a nightmare too.
    I have found that Fighting types generally do quite well in RSE. There are a lot of trainers with dark types, especially the evil teams, and while steel types are generally rare they show up in a few major battles: Watson, Winona and Steven. There is also a rock gym leader, normal gym leader, a dark elite four and ice elite four, so there are a good number of major battles where the Fighting type damage can be quite useful. The new fighting types also get access to more & better coverage moves so I expect the fighting type to jump up a lot in the gen 3 type tier list.
    It actually might be interesting to see how they preform as backports into the old games.

    Just for the sake of clarification to anyone that's interested: Medicham has *a lot* more than 120 Base Attack following it's Pure Power Ability!
    60 Base Attack with a positive nature and maxed out EVs/IVs ends up on 240 Attack at Level 100. Since the doubling doesn't happen to the base stat but the actual face stat, we end up at 480 Attack - as a comparison, Metagross, who has 135 Base Attack, ends up at 405 Attack if all hidden values are maxed out.
    Medichams Attack Stat is actually most comparable to that of Mega Gallade - A Pokémon that has an insane 165 Attack Base - and still ends up on top, as Mega-Gallade "only" ends up at 471 Attack with maxed hidden values. The Base Stat Total that Medichams Attack actually equals is 169 - that would reach exactly 480 Attack with maxed hidden values.
    Funfact: The later existing Mega Medicham raises it's base Attack to 100 while maintaining this Ability, raising it's effective Attack with max hidden values to 656. That is stronger than a Machamp that already is boosted by 1 stage, for example, and would not only equal out at 249 Base Attack, but would also be the second highest unboosted Attackstat ever brought into the games, just short of the 339×2 = 678 that Huge Power Mega Mawile (105 Base Attack) can reach!

    Other reasons that Medicham has doubled attack as an ability instead of just higher stats are:
    -It takes up the ability slot, meaning it doesn't have an ability _and_ stupidly high attack.
    -It can be effected by things which mess with abilities like Mummify and Skill Swap.

    just noticing how the last seven pokemon played and the next one all have mega evolutions, any chance you'll be doing a mega series playing through the games with backported mega evolutions? I think it'd be super interesting, especially in cases where the mega evolution changes the typing (thinking charizard x and sceptile)

    it was hilarious when you were worrying about Intimidate attack drops, also I think using the White Herb with Sidney was maybe a misplay because Drake's Salamence could potentially be slightly more of an issue. with how ludicrously powerful Medicham is, there's no reason to fear Intimidate Pokemon. you also don't need to set up as much as you assume. and also with that ridiculous attack, there's not much point either teaching Calm mind or sticking with any special moves for a long time.

    Medicham is already in my head canon team, and it has just topped your list. That makes me feel good about myself and choices.
    If you somehow optimised this further, you could get close to 1:25, however that is just a guess. Perhaps a comparative video using special moves versus physical moves should be on your video list.

    On the Steven fight, High Jump kick may give the extra damage at +3 you need. You can also try going into the fight pre poisoned, that way youll only have to recover through normal poison and can probably set up to max on skarmory without endangering the sweep.

    That's an impressive finish time for Medicham! Definitely a beast of a mon in Gen 3.
    But I'm sure that Swampert could do better, if it started fully evolved as a Swampert like Medicham did in this video. Steven's Cradily would be the only threat to it, and it's in the post-game. Starting fully evolved, I don’t think the rival's Grovyle would be a threat, like Swampert could just over-level a bit and one-shot that gecko with a rock tomb (the tm Roxanne gives you). Which by the way, Medicham could've used rock tomb to beat that Aqua grunt, and prevent those unnecessary 5 resets.
    And I still remember the Luvdisc playthrough (one of very few Pokemon currently ranked lower than Swampert). In that playthrough, even Luvdisc managed to get a 2-shot on Steven's Cradily with Ice beam. So if Luvdisc could pull that feat off, I'm certain Swampert could too.
    I know there’s gonna be 2nd playthroughs with most of them, where Swampert will finally be redeemed, but I can't help it. I can't help the feeling of heartbreak whenever he pulls the tier list, and Swampert is at the very bottom, cause it doesn’t belong there! Swampert is a beast, it's the best Hoenn starter for a reason!
    Anyways, this was an awesome video as always, and I'll be patiently waiting for Swampert's second run, where it'll hopefully blow Medicham's and Hariyama's times out of the water. 😊

      I think Pure Power puts it too much over the edge, that’s basically two free meditates before you even set up. Medicham also has a near perfect movepool and a speed stat good enough to outspeed nearly every major threat. But if there’s one Mon who could challenge it, swampert could be in contention

    • @evawhite1144
      @evawhite1144 5 месяцев назад +1

      @beebobber546 All right, perhaps it's not better than Medicham cause it has no way of buffing up its attack stat, but it still doesn't belong at the bottom of the tier list, that's something we can all agree on.
      Scott had no idea what he was doing with Swampert. He didn't even go get Ice beam for the Winona fight, or Brick-break for Sidney and Glacia. And the psychic twin fuckers can be made trivial with a mix of: setting up Rain dance+ mystic water attached+stab+torrent range whenever Swampert is at low health, and Surf should be enough to destroy Tate and Liza.
      If it can't be as good as Medicham, I at least expect it to be as good as Hariyama.

    • @evawhite1144
      @evawhite1144 5 месяцев назад

      @@thecriticalghost4626 Oh, don't worry sweetheart, I'm sure once he does 2nd runs with the starters, Swampert is gonna get a much better time than Blaziken, because if anything, I'm sure Blaziken won't have as easy a time against the psychic twin mfs, and unlike Medicham it don't get access to Shadow ball to cheese that fight. 😅😂
      Like, I'm fully expecting your beloved KFC to get +10 resets on them or something. Not to mention the, you know, WATER type champion in this game.
      And we know, Wallace's dumbass AI, is gonna make him spam Water spout with his Wailord 100% of the time against a fire type, and I can't see Blaziken tanking a Water spout from a Wailord at full health, because it does a ton of damage.
      And I know Blaziken will defo move 1st vs Wallace's Wailord, but can it one-shot it? When it doesn't get any super effective moves for water types? He'll probably move 1st, try to set up Bulk up, and immediately get swept by a Water spout, lol. Unless it's super over-leveled to try and survive one hit. Oh, and his Gyarados has the best ability in the game in intimidate, that will cut its attack in half, so he'll definitely need to set up more than one sole Bulk up, if he wants to have any chances of taking down that intimidating Gyarados in one hit. And none of Wallace's Pokemon are safe for Blaziken to set up against.
      So I'm fully expecting him to get another +10 resets on Wallace, before he can even have a chance to move on to Steven, who is definitely easier. Keep that in mind.

    I was always under the assumption that you had this overlay infront of you while you're playing but this one makes me wonder. Specifically at Winona you can see the attack stat easily more than double the s attack. Unless there is a discrepancy in opposing stats (like geodude) you'll almost always be better off with the more than doubled stat probably semi obvious in hindsight but I'd bet just off the quick math that HP fighting would have 1 shot the swab. Same with altaria since you were +2

    Medicham definitely has room for improvement. Teach Rock Tomb early, don’t train for Wattson, and skip Calm Mind. Late-game, HJK+Shadow Ball kills EVERYTHING. The setup time is just a waste in most fights with your raw power.

    To think even with the player errors Medicham smashed the game this hard. Also instead of grinding until HP Fighting for the Poochyena, you could've just used Rock Tomb since you just got it from Roxanne. That combined with teaching Bulk Up earlier to help tank some extra hits, with optimization and a lucky, resetless run I wouldn't be surprised if Medicham got a sub 1:30 real time.
