Can’t learn any punching moves, but learns Sunny Day? This checks out.
He’s got a smile that brightens up everyone’s day
He is in training before he can become a true fighter!!!!
Imagine the meeting at Game Freak where they came up with shit this.
I think all the baby pokemon should learn Sunny Day because it's the first words in the Sesame Street theme song.

When even Tyrogue can learn Mud-Slap, but Gligar can't...
How could a flying scorpion slap something? Tyrogue has hands to do that!
@@marcoasturias8520totally agree
@@marcoasturias8520Mud-Slap is just throwing Mud at the target
Hell I could learn mud-slap at this point 😂
What a mud slap in the face.
That split frame Buneary reference when talking about friendship values is exactly what I was hoping to see.
At least the Hitmon line were all useful somewhere competitively.
Hitmonlee was a dangerous mid-low tier sweeper, Hitmonchan was a low tier spinner, and Hitmontop was an OG VGC Intimidator.
Then there's Tyrogue.
He has not yet earned the title of Hitmon
Tyrogue and Rock Smash is giving me Wing Attack energy in Gen 1

Fun fact if one of the day siblings is standing on an item for example Wesley or Frieda on those days the item is moved one tile in front of them, so on Wednesday you can pick up the Rare Candy it is just one tile in front of Wesley.
Also if you do have to grind up against wild Pokemon in Johto you can teach your Oddish the TM for Sweet Scent which will allow you to encounter Pokemon much faster than just walking back and forth, this is especially true if you are surfing and want to knock out Tentacools/Tentacruels in the water to the north of the healing house on Route 26, their levels range from 25-34.
My man Tyrogue has an Arceus-like stat distribution. This will be fun.

Lmao Tyrogue getting absolutely roasted in the beginning of the video 😂 I hope he got a Burn Heal
The reason why Tyrogue exists is to give the different Hitmons High Jump Kick or Rapid Spin
I legitimately thought that tyrouge could only tackle 😂
It has a decent egg move pool iirc.
As a og gsc player I agree I thought that to I HATED trying to evo him but I loved all his evolutions😂
Gotta be one of the most improved times out! Really feels like the baby pokemon, in forcing you to play the game differently, are really heightening your skills!
I really thought that with a lvl 100 finish, we were about to see an actual use of TM Double team.
If even Tyrogue could beat the game, I don't know if we'll see the rule getting invoked in Gen 2.
@@shiro1744 Is Tyrogue the worst baby? It probably is looking at the move pools.
@shiro1744 maybe with sunkurn?
@@trevorparker6400 sunkern at least has good moves
@@trevorparker6400Sunkern isn’t classified as a baby Pokemon, that’s the only issue
The irony is that Tyroge has outstanding egg moves to fulfill that potential, but you gotta breed it to make it happen lol
If Scott ever does an egg series then this would be a candidate for most time reduced. Mach punch and HJK would make it hit so much harder.
@@davidgardner6677 It really wouldn't matter because of the optimizations needed for Red. It gets you a more consistent early game, but HJK isn't helping you versus most of the Elite Four over Return and definitely not for Red.
Interestingly enough, Tyrouge has Mach punch and Hi Jump kick as egg moves. So when I was a kid I would try to get a Hitmonchan with hi jump kick and a Hitmonlee with mach punch. I don't think either of those moves would help Tyrouge too much but I think they would definitely help some, could be an interesting challenge. So far my earlier prediction is checking out though.
Would a Hitmonlee spontaneously develop an arm to punch with, but only while using the move....or ball up it's foot into a foot-fist and "punch" with it?
@@nihilvoxhitmonlee has arms lol
@@yep_itsmeagain ...So he does. Don't I look foolish.
Uh, I mean.... You passed my test? Well done, traveler. You truly are a pokemon master. Here's... Uh..... Here's an old Easter egg shell? It increases the odds of your pokemon laying eggs that look dyed. Or something.
I always did Sprout Tower first. The gym always felt like a final test in a town to me so... yeah.
Honest to god, I subscribed because of those comparison charts. Really well done, so damn thorough!
I remember getting the egg for this thing and being so excited to see what it evolved into and it was a Hitmonchan. Obviously this was amazing because it gets so many coverage moves! Don't need good stats when you're about 20 levels too high.
currently going through a pretty intensive covid infection and my tinnitus + fever makes it impossible to sleep.
your videos made it a LOT easier to get through the nights. i am binge watching at least 20-30 hours of content.
thank you! ♥
Once all the Crystal babies are done, you should do run-throughs of each of their evolved forms to see how much of an improvement they all are.
Nice finish! Also WOW this guy is not good (not saying more to avoid spoilers)! Congrats on mussling your way through this insane challange. I predict right now that pichu is going to be a pain. But predicting less so then Tyrogue simply due to it's superiod move set (it's stats are worse then Tyrogue, but better moves, I think, will make a big difference)
Rhydon always gets so shafted lol, but I suspect Blue’s was going for fury attack to fish for critical hits, because Tyrogue had buffed with curse
Love you, Scott. Longtime fan here- just wanted to let you know your progression with me: you started out as an alt for JRose, then you won me over with your scientific approach and I subbed. Then you were background noise at the house. Then you became my traveling companion on work trips, keeping me company for hours at a time. Now I bring you to work with me and you actively help my troubleshooting skills. You're a very great entertainer and I look forward to many more videos. Be safe, my friend
He started as an alt for me too compared to some other poketubers, but now he is my main and all other poketubers are the alts 😂
You forgot to mention how Tyrogue evolves depending on its Attack/Defense stat. Would’ve been interesting to see which evolution was most common as you leveled up.
Hitmonlee: more attack
Hitmonchan: more defense
Hitmontop: equal defense and attack
For the solo playthrough format, assuming HP Ice is chosen you’ll likely get Hitmonlee every time due to the boost in attack from Falkner’s badge
Badge boosts don't count towards ot.
Forgive me if I missed it, but you haven't done the Hitmontrio for Gen 2 yet, right? Sounds like an interesting video to learn the usefulness of Hitmonchan and top in gen 2
I can save you on the time for hitmontop. It's trash.
Hitmonlee is the only good hitmon until Gen 3 when top gets intimidate. Hitmonchan is still the worst after the physical special split because of his stat distribution
Dude, that strategy for Red was actually cool and clever as hell! 👏
I was a bit surprised he didn't use curse though lol. The only issue I had while using was lowering my speed but eh, it's not like Tyrogue will outspeed Espeon any day LOL.
At least Magby, Elekid, and Smoochum have good moves. Tyrogue really got the rough deal of the baby 'mons. They learn elemental punches and have decent level up learn sets as well. Which makes me realize just how weird it is that Tyrogue can't learn any of the elemental punches. That's so absolutely bizarre given that it can evolve into Hitmonchan.
Game freak probably didn't want ice punch hitmonlees taking over the playground
@@twistedtachyon5877 a fair point, but the elemental punches were pretty awful for their intended users before the phys-special split. Also Hitmonlee can learn mega punch, so why not?
Like you can't tell me that Hitmonchan has that special stat and was seriously intended to use those skills. There's literally no way, and yet it persisted for 3 generations.
Would love to see how tyrogue goes with some or all of its egg moves! I think high jump kick would be a game changer. Super excited for this series!!
I never came across Tyrogue either as a kid, but some playground talk pointed me in it's direction eventually haha. It's crazy how info like this passed mouth to mouth as kids to the point that stuff made it across country boarders (like pikablu, the mew/truck glitch, etc). But wow Tyrogues time is absurd 🤣
Would have been fun for each of these babies to be the Odd Egg version, aka start with Dizzy Punch.
Thanks Scott your videos help me get through the day, I download a playlist of videos I missed and listen to it while I'm at work
I really like the concept of a Pokemon that can basically only learn TMs, but everything else (stats, typing, available TMs) about Tyrouge is not good. Even DynamicMiss would really help it in a few situations!
I legit kept crying inside during my Solo tyrogue, if it only had Dynamic punch, it would've made SO much sections SO much more fun LOL! But to rely on rock smash and mud slap.. I don't get why it couldn't learn mach punch or just.. anything XD it's baffling that even Cleffa is a better solo mon!.. cleffa
The tragedy of Tyrogue as a solo mon is that it can't learn many Fighting-type moves because many of them only make sense for one or two of the evos.
I love how you had the professor music playing while you were doing that explanation. It is like other tracks that you use for specific moments like with Bruno and I find that it is a great touch. Great video again and I am looking forward to the next one. When I was a kid, I loved the look of Elekid; so I am cheering for it, but I am excited to see how Magby will go.
Tyrogue is a Pokémon that I think maybe deserves a special playthrough someday. In particular its egg move list contains one move from each of its potential evolutions. This notably includes Mach Punch and High Jump Kuck, which seem like they could make some interesting differences.
...or maybe not, since since neither of those moves are going to help against the Espeon.
This could be one of the most difficult runs ever. I hate training tyrogue, but man. Hitmonlee is worth it. Good luck scott!
Rare Monday Scott
Happy birthday Scott
I thought his birthday was in April?
Gotta take a second to comment just how sweet Tyrogue's back sprite is.
This was probably extremely painful for you, but I won't lie, it gave me great satisfaction to see Togepi own Tyrogue this hard.
I love the exactly 2 frames that Bunneary is on screen when you're talking about friendship. I caught it the first time but I had to stop and look just to make sure, and then I nearly fell out of my seat laughing
This might be the most substantial optimization in the history of your channel. Well done!
New videos from Scott around the holidays? Now that is something to be thankful for :)
27:23 Ooh, that's a very neat way to explain Lance's evolution inconsistency!
Next series should be “what if brick break was in gen 1/2 so fighting types wouldn’t be dead weight?”
This is going to be brutal
Wow, I was amazed at the game time improvement! Very nicely done
Really love the thumbnail 😂 Tyrogue looks so determined!
Scott on a monday? no complaining.
EDIT: THIS ONE WAS BRUTAL :o
So weird that Buneary has a base friendship of 0! Took me a while to pause on that frame. Great video as always!
I’m glad you found it!
It would have been fun to see you do the runs with the baby pokémon with all their egg moves at your disposal since egg moves are the whole (only) advantage of breeding and using baby pokemon
My favorite mon! I don't expect it to do amazing at all, but I'm still happy he got a video so early in Gen 2
It is incredible that every pokemon really is someone's favourite. Even tyrogue.
I've always loved Tyrogue! He's such a little dude lol. Looking forward to this struggle of a battle lol.
Tyrogue seems like a pokemon a main character would have, and it would have a scarf (just how things go).
I saw that Buneary jump scare! LMAO You can't fool me Scott!
Scott just pumping out videos. Love this so much
I still think a separate series where return, curse, and rest are disallowed would be good! Planning for 2026 up in here.
Alright I'm gonna eat my words, this was brutal and I can't imagine how much slower Pichu will be.
The transition at 12:00 was nice!
I really do hope you went with HP Ground: the difference of 3 IVs is only 3 stat points at lv 50 and 6 at lv 100. You can make up the difference from like, 1 level, which is _so_ worth having a 70BP ground type move for Steels and Ghosts, which Tyrogue particularly struggles with, not to mention the various poison types like Koffing and Weezing. I'm only at your Steelix battle on the first run so I don't know what you've gone for yet.
Ghosts werent as important as lance tbh. Theres actually no reason to prefer a physical move to a special one here!
Love the new statistics and bars, thank you for that!
I'm mean all that Hidden Power Info was useful, but the fact that Tyrogue has equal SpA and Att was cause enough. Its also the Best Type coverage with Mudslap.
Oh god this learn-set. Good luck Scott
I knew Tyrogue was going to be particularly painful 😅
I'm honestly excited for this one, idk why but tyrogue was one of my favorites when I was little
I always found Tyrogue to be an interesting Pokémon just because of how difficult it is for a player to obtain one without trading from Gen 1. Always made it feel special, just a bit
You cant even trade one from gen 1, you would have to trade hitmonchan or hitmonlee and breed one with a ditto, for a mon with 35 in every stat
@@yeetus2547 Thats what the guy said. He didnt say trade tyrogue from gen 1. He said trading from gen 1 which implies either hitmon. Lets read in more detail bro.
Or just get him as a gift in Mt. Mortar from the karate master.
The issue with that is, you need Waterfall to reach him, and that part of Mt. Mortar is dark, and given how oppressive the darkness is in Gen 2, you basically need either Flash, or to open a map of the area and hope you don't lose track of where you are.
Loved the Buneary cameo
Gotta love Rock Smash's 8 effective power against Will's Xatu. Poor Tyrogue.
I'd be tempted to use Hidden Power Fighting just so he has STAB. His weakness to ghost is an issue though.
Oh. You addressed that right after I hit enter.
I usually like the videos anyway, but this one I liked as soon as you mentioned StarCraft
Tyrogue truly is the Pokémon of all time
I am so excited for this series.
Blue fight, 1st playthrough. So the AI is probably making the Rhydon use Fury Attack for the wrong reasons, but I can actually see the logic of the move in that scenario. Significantly higher odds of scoring at least 1 critical hit versus a regular move, which is likely the only way it can do meaningful damage against a +6 Tyrogue.
The 1st playthrough only ended because of a crit on the Espeon, poor Scott.
We feel you.
*checks length*
I cannot believe you stayed sane doing this
The amount of time I spent pausing my tv to try and catch that frame of Bradd Pitt
Expecting Tyrogue to have a good run is like expecting the best little league team to win the World Series. They gotta grow up a bit.
On a whim, I decided to look up how many of the baby pokemon could learn Mud-Slap. All of them. Poor Gligar :(
15:03
Buneary with 'base friendship: 0' popped for 0.1 second
Good catch. I think it was 2 frames long.
A level 100 finish! I wonder if Tyrogue will be the worst or if there's a possibility of the level 100 exception to the TM32 ban will come into play at some point.
Hey Scott, it would be amazing to have an indicator or stat experience in the overlay!
I'm thinking a small "exp" bar below each stat number OR each stat slot itself acting as a progress bar and slowly filling itself with a slightly darker color👍
PS: You don't have to show the numeric amount of stat exp, just a visual indicator would be enough
It makes sense for blackout training to not count as a reset, even when you don’t know when you will reset, since when you usually reset, you are going back to a save point, which ends up removing all earned exp from the fight. Since you are keeping it across blackouts, it isn’t really a reset. If you had added 20+ of those resets, it would look like Tyrogue could get through the game much faster if it had ‘perfect luck’ since those resets would never happen.
You know when it goes over an hour we're in for a good time. Well the viewers, not Scott.
Because Bruno is actually a competent trainer in the Johto League I recommend that you rename the Bruno tier into the Pryce tier for the Gen 2 tier list
I remembe as a kid leveling up Tyrogue ,it felt like an eternity to get to level 20 while eagerly hoping that it would get a different move then tackle. I grinded it because I knew that would evolve. The first one that I got evolved into a Hitmonlee.😊
That's why I kind figured that would struggle, but I never thought that it get to level 100 . But in the end hidden power and standard gen 2 moves were it's saving grace.😊
By the way the hidden power explanation was really looking cool ,and it was well thought.
Love to see this run. I tried this in Heartgold at one point...one of the big differences between gen 2 and gen 4 is that Falkner gives Roost instead of Mudslap. This seems to have been accounted for by Tyrogue having foresight on it's moveset as the only way to hit ghosts. This is the case all the way to Morty, as the closest options (Hidden Power and Thief) require Surf to access. I foolishly didn't bother reseting for IVs and had a terrible Tyrogue and eventually gave up at Will...
The subliminal buneary scared the absolute shit out of me
I'll be completely honest here but with Tyrogue I just flatly wondered if it was a run that was winnable at the outset. Tyrogue's stats and movepool are just so bad that I really didn't know if it was possible. Glad to see I was wrong, and it didn't even clock in with over 3 hours. I can't imagine this time gets beat any time soon: the Pokemon who would struggle harder I imagine are just so bad that there is a very likely chance they might not even be able to complete the game. Like I don't imagine Caterpie or Weedle can beat Red at all and for a Pokemon like Magikarp maybe it can through use of Flail? Sunkern is probably the best case to do worse incidentally.
This was a fun video! It's cool to see new routing choices incorporated into the run as a whole. Do you think it would be worth doing Elite Four training in some of the older runs that needed to grind on wild Pokemon for Red?
Brutal run scott
Great run! May not have made a big difference but mud slap may have helped to set up against the Pikachu and then you could get past Espeon even with reflect up perhaps?
You could go with Fails and Blackout Training Blackouts. Fails will increment if you reset or if you black out without being in a blackout training session, while BTB catches all the blackout training blackouts, whether or not you know when you're going to win. And when you decide to do BT, you could tell the overlay with some kind of switch that makes it count blackouts towards BTB, stopping that when you beat the trainer you're blacking out to.
Scott said Lance in Gen 2 is a flying type trainer and I cannot unsee that when I battle him/see you battle him. Lol nice one scott
This series is v entertaining. Bad pokemon = good content
I have not seen anything yet and all I can think about is this guy is saying help me in every language
Welp, that was about as hellish as I was expecting. I think next weekend's babies will do decently well, since their stats and movepools are actually not atrocious. (Though Smoochum crumpling to being lightly poked physically is not ideal.)
I think Elekid especially has good potential, since it gets Thunder Punch at level 9 (seems strangely early for how strong of a move it is, especially by Gen 2 standards) then the other two punches by TM.
At 15:03 it's a Buneary with a caption "Base friendship: 0" You're welcome. It is on screen for exactly one frame.
Ah yes, the "needs to grind on wild pokemon in Johto" tier.
I wasn't expecting Tyrogue to be that much worse than Togepi, but it makes sense.
The first minute or so is so relatable 😂🤣 I didn't know about Tyrogue until it was release in Pokémon Go (which is depressing) and I've played + completed every Pokémon game up till Legends Arceus.
I swear no trainer at any point ever uses it
In Pokémon Rangers: Shadows of Almia, Tyrogue roam a section of Pueltown.
Yyyyyup, this is starting off as painful as I thought it would! I like how at level 15, you needed a Crit to beat the Pidgeotto... It's only going to get worse from here! I'll comment after the credits roll, but I'm predicting this little loser gets one of the worst times you'll ever get in GSC
Man imagine all the league members just seeing this Trainer with 1 Tyrogue run smashing against them till he wins, then coming back 20 mins later to just run thru them again and again.
Quick note: Not too sure about Singles, in in VGC/Doubles, Hitmotop was one of the best utility/support Pokémon until Incineroar came in Gen 7.
