Oh geez, haven't watched this one yet, but I already KNOW this will be painful... You're a more patient Scott than I am, my friend 😅
This reminds me of when I would play Silver on my little green Game Boy Color back in the day. I would always save Togepi for Chuck's gym, I'd have her literally not levelled up at all. Then, I'd send her out against the Hitmonlee trainer. For some reason, 9 year old me was convinced that Hi Jump Kick would never land on Togepi, and so it would die, and Togepi would level up like crazy! And, as it turns out, 9 year old me was exceedingly lucky, because no matter how many times I'd reset and do the fight, that always happened! I guess I was just better at Pokemon back then...
EDIT: OH JEEZ. Just watched to the end of the video. Scott, you're a masochist! Tyrogue is going to be AWFUL! You only have Thief and Mud Slap for dealing with the Gastly line, that's going to be sheer pain... All I can say is best of luck man, I'll watch tomorrow for your 3 hour plus run!

“What niche is this supposed to fill?” Well, both its stat spread and level-up movelist are defensive. So my guess is that it’s supposed to ruin the opponent’s ability to deal damage and inflict status conditions, so that you can then swap in a setup sweeper. Later gens mostly give it more support moves: Yawn, Wish, Follow Me, Baton Pass, Life Dew.

With regards to Sandstorm being at its best in Gen 2, I would say that is true in a vacuum.
However, in competitive Gen 2, Sandstorm is mainly relegated to stall teams dedicated to abusing its passive damage, while in Gens 3, 4, and 5 it's a metagame-defining force.
That is because in Gen 2, Sandstorm can only be summoned by its namesake move and only lasts for 5 turns at a time before needing to be reestablished.
But in the next 3 gens, the Ability Sand Stream exists, which not only eliminates the need to spend a turn setting up Sandstorm, but also makes the weather condition last _forever_, unless it is removed by another weather condition. The fact that the mons that have Sand Stream, Tyranitar and later Hippowdon, have many excellent traits besides setting a game-warping field condition. Gen 5 was especially good for Sandstorm because of the introduction of Sand Rush and Sand Force.
And even from Gen 6 on, when Sand Stream and similar abilities were nerfed to no longer have the weather they summon last indefinitely, the ability to briefly chip down many opposing mons and empower your own just by switching is still quite powerful. Back when I played Gen 8 OU, I loved running Sand Rush Dracozolt alongside Smooth Rock Hippowdon as a powerful win condition.

Togepi; the Pokémon it felt like you were obligated to have join you as a kid because it seemed like the story would revolve around it... and then you got into hilarious Metronome shenanigans as a result. Interesting you had an opposite reaction of boxing it almost immediately.
1:29 - The term "Baby Pokémon" was confusing from the get-go with the likes of Magby being basically a standard pre-evolution given it's stats and level up method. I had thought the original intent was for them to be friendship evolution Pokémon with lower stats but access to moves the evolved stages could never get but nope.
4:06 - Yeah, you would think it would have gotten Defence Curl in the place of Growl. Given it is an egg at this point, Softboiled or Egg Bomb would have made sense as well.
7:40 - Getting Thrash here, and 3 hit variant, was certainly fortunate.
10:34 - The poisoning Sludge Bomb and Charm combo was terrific to see. It may be frustrating but a reliance of Metronome does lead to some wonderfully entertaining results for us viewers.
14:24 - I thought you had a good combination going there with Mud Slap-Sweet Kiss-Charm. I suppose it's a slow combo and you are timing yourself in these solo challenges.
16:19 - Togepi doesn't come across as a particularly masculine Pokémon, though not specifically feminine either, so it's odd how much it's gender ratio is skewed towards male.
21:32 - A Johto Pokémon whom it doesn't feel like they thought out it's stats/type/movepool/placement? What a shock... or rather not.
22:34 - Two NPC trainers with back-to-back art in a row? Cool. An nice that you mention the Nob trivia.
26:06 - What a good message; working on you and your Pokémon instead of falling into the trap of gambling. Morals aside, having a Vs Seeker and being able to rematch trainers to earn coins as you grind would be so useful here. I assume you weren't lucky enough to get some phone calls for trainer fights here.
28:01 - Icy Wind feels like the sort of move that Togepi shouldn't be able to learn but Togetic should... turns out neither of them do. I honestly Togetic had more Special move options as a perk to evolving but nope; pretty much only gains access to the physical Flying move pool (and Steel Wing).
30:00 - All that earlier training did pay off. An true to your expectation, you're still at a point where you are using a physical focused Togepi (I also had just realised that you didn't nickname the little guy).
34:00 - Just rolling through all of Lance's Pokémon here. I was expecting you would need to Rest at some point or use some delaying tactic but nope, first go, first win.
35:50 - Those decent defences Togepi sure came in handy in the end.
41:54 - At long last, Togepi is finally able to put it's mystical prowess to use.
48:43 - Given it is a baby Pokémon, with no attacking moves from the get-go and a reliance on luck for the first gym, it's tier placement is actually far better than expected. Good going Togepi!

On your comment on Sandstorm: Sandstorm ingame might be its best at Gen 2, but in compotitive it was it most centralizing it was in Gen 3. Tyranitar was the most dominant Pokémon almost only because of the impact its omnipesent Sandstorm has. Everything in battle is affected by Sandstorm, and damage calculations always factor in Sandstorm

I think you should have kept Metronome. Yes, it's random, but Vanman had a Ponyta redo that showed that sometimes moves that seem more random are actually more consistent. In his case, getting knock-outs with Horn Drill was actually more consistent than hoping for good luck with ponyta's other moves. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a similar situation this run.

    • @SourceOfBeing
      @SourceOfBeing Год назад +4

In that situation, Vanman was effectively comparing Fire Spin to Horn Drill. The amount of times he needed Fire Spin to hit, meant that hitting 1 Horn Drill was more likely.
With Metronome, it's not so straight forward. There's only about 10 moves in Gen 2 that it can't pick so having Metronome be a more likely/reliable option would only really work if he to rely on a low accuracy move like Zap Cannon for most of the playthrough, or if most hits in the playthrough needed to be criticals.

I don't think togepi would get ice moves in gen 1. At least not anymore than pidgey or fearow would. It's still a flying type when it evolves after all.

One thing to remember is that Nintendo and Gamefreak have never really catered to the competitive scene, the Pokémon games have always been marketed more towards choosing your favorites than choosing the best.

Have you ever heard of the *Old Man trick" in the game corners? It can take a while longer than just grinding up the money, but it's way more consistent than gambling your way if you need to resort to it.

Whenever gambling comes up in G1 or G2, you really should consider allowing an uncapped speed boost with a turbo-controller/auto-clicker.
Forcing the correct time of day on entering the game corner could also give you access to a machine with improved odds.

I do wonder if it would have been better to keep charm. That way you could lower the attack stats of certain enemies, used mud slap to blind them, rest to recover HP and take advantage of mud slap induced misses, and then based enemies down with return. After all, you could have picked up rest by visiting the ice path before taking on Jasmine.

Togapi is definitely the slow defensive pokemon, that can't benefit from it's stab for this gen. Togapi is great stall pokemon but not the best in trems of solo runs. 😊
I remember hating to grind that pokemon as a kid ,and wanting to evolve fast,so I could use it. But in a gen 4 nuzlocke I did a while ago ,it was a great team player, due to encore. I'm not sure how encore could help in solo run ,but it can sure make some battles trivial, like Whitney,Chuck, and even Lance by locking them to use useless moves or moves that are less damaging to you. And if you'll combine it with charm the early game should be smooth, for the most part.😊 By the way if I recall correctly there is a defense curl tm in Mount Mortar. So maybe that could help the rollout strategy by a little bit.
I'm excited what road Tyrogue will take. One thing is for sure , it's going to rely on tms a lot.😊 Thanks for uploading more frequently, you're the best!

Sandstorm is at it's best in gen 3. Because by simply swapping Tyranitar in you permanently deal damage to your non-ground/rock/steel opponents (and allies I guess). Where before it was just meh a move no one really ever used because it's not good, rain and sun are better cause damage boost/lowering alongside a few extra things for a few moves.

Togepi did... actually very good. It's not as disadvantaged as you'd expect. Good movepool, decent bulky stats, and the Normal typing really help in Gen 2. I hate to ask you to do another playthrough, but have you considered doing one with your new knowledge for routing to get Fire Blast to deal with Jasmine, Will's Exeggutor, and some other Fire-weak threats? Would that help Togepi get under 2 hours?

  • @justingoodell4409
    @justingoodell4409 Год назад

Scott, I seen that scyther broke his own combo. Is that the first time you used a attack lower stat on him that changed his AI to use only quick attack? You might look into that for weak pokemon that you can possible use growl or something to reduce the damage by a ton so you dont have to over lvl as much. Food For (Scott's) Thought.

Doesn't Elekid get ice punch? That should help. I guess early game rocks will hurt a bit. Mud slap may help. Oh and maybe fire punch for Steels/Ice. And Psychic for Venusaur if it needs it? Whats the best hidden power then? Great stat distribution too.

Okay, so you wondered about why Bugsy would stop using Fury Cutter: the most likely scenario I can think of is that it rolled a miss in the pre-roll.
If an enemy has an inaccurate move they won't use it if they miss on their pre-roll or they can miss if they succeed.

Snowy said that the AI preroll doesn’t have accuracy. So there must be another culprit.

My bet is that Magby will be the best baby. It won't struggle against Jasmine but Smoochum really will, and once you hit Goldenrod you can enter the elemental punch out circuit. Elekid could also be a contender, but between the two I don't think it can consistently match up to Magby.
